BD FACSseq™ Cell Sorter and BD™ Precise AssaysGene expression assays for single cells
The new BD FACSseq™ Cell Sorter selects thousands of individual cells, quickly discarding any dead/dying cells and then isolating them into PCR plates that contain preloaded BD™ Precise Reagents for your customized targeted gene expression assays. A much simplified workflow prepares the samples for absolute and direct molecular counting of transcripts by next generation sequencing (NGS), while minimizing amplification bias that can potentially occur in these crucial steps.
The affordable BD FACSseq Cell Sorter combined with BD Precise Assays lets you easily amp up your lab’s productivity to help ensure that your high quality single cell samples are ready for gene expression assays. And, you can significantly increase data accuracy and throughput while controlling costs.

months about the ESMO 2017 Congress in Partnership with EACR: this is an opportunity not to be missed.
CAREFOR project2015 also saw the EACR join with the EORTC and ESMO on the CAREFOR project – the Clinical Academic Cancer Research Forum. CAREFOR’s mission is to improve the delivery of academic clinical cancer trials in European oncology. I attended a meeting in Brussels in October 2015 where discussions were held with five Members of the European Parliament about the importance of academic clinical trials. Further developments will be announced as the project progresses.
New logo and websiteLast year also saw the introduction of a new logo for the EACR (see page 15) - and by the time you read this, a new EACR website will have been launched. We believe that this updated appearance and new user-focused website will help the EACR to continue to build our strong presence within the European and global cancer community. If there are new features you would like to see on our website, then we would be happy to hear from you.
EACR24 CongressAt the time of writing the EACR Congress, to be held 09-12 July in my home town of Manchester, is less than five months away. As Congress and Scientific Chair I strongly encourage you not to miss out: the ‘regular rate’ deadline is 30 May. You can find more reasons to attend over the next three pages - including details of the rich and varied scientific programme and the outstanding line-up of speakers.
I wish you every success in 2016 and I hope to see you in Manchester in July.

We aim to bring together different perspectives from both sides of the lab bench
It is my pleasure to introduce the 2016 EACR Yearbook, which describes our activities and achievements of the
past year and tells you of the new opportunities the next year will bring.
New Partnership with ESMO2015 brought exciting developments for the EACR. We formed a major new partnership with the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO). There is a natural link between our associations that the leaderships of both are keen to develop. We aim to bring together different perspectives from both sides of the lab bench in order to enable even greater cooperation and exchange of ideas between basic and translational researchers and their clinical colleagues.
An important result of this new relationship is that in 2017 and 2019 the EACR will be an active partner in the ESMO Congress. This will give EACR members the opportunity to attend a major congress - in addition to the EACR Biennial Congress - with a reduced registration rate, programme tracks of real interest and relevance, and opportunities to exchange knowledge with the medical oncology community. We have also recently partnered on the ‘ESMO Symposium on Signalling Pathways in Cancer’ (Sitges, Barcelona, 04-05 March 2016), co-chaired by the EACR Secretary General Clare Isacke, and I was pleased to see so many EACR members in attendance.
Make sure you look out for further details over the coming

EACR Members’ Survey
I would like to thank you if you are one of the many EACR members who completed the 2016
Members’ Survey. We received a huge number of well-considered responses: you told us about the challenges you face as cancer researchers, about your EACR membership, what it means to belong to a community like the EACR, and how we can strengthen and develop the Association still more in the years to come.
On the facing page you can see a graphical summary of some of the data obtained from the survey. Of course the most valuable feedback we received was all of your thoughtfully written comments, ideas and suggestions. These cannot be summarised here, but we are using them to inform our future activities.
EACR Conference Series
EACR members will be very familiar with the EACR Conference Series. 2015 was a great year for the Conference Series, with six successful meetings including our first special conference organised in partnership with the AACR and SIC (Società Italiana di Cancerologia) on ‘Anticancer Drug Action and Drug Resistance’ in Florence, Italy. You can read more about the Conference Series on pages 16-18.
EACR General Assembly at the EACR24 CongressI’d like to invite you to attend the EACR Members’ General Assembly at the EACR24 Congress in Manchester, which will be held on Sunday 10 July
at 19.00, just after the close of the day’s scientific sessions. This will be great opportunity for you to meet other EACR members and network, as well as vote on important EACR business and congratulate this year’s award winners. The event will be followed by a buffet reception – please remember to sign up on the EACR24 website.
‘Solo Travellers’ Meet and Greet hosted by EACR AmbassadorsOn the first day of EACR24 we are organising an informal social event for those attending the Congress on their own. This gives ‘solo travellers’ the opportunity to meet other participants and make new contacts before the scientific sessions begin. If you are interested, please sign up to attend on the EACR24 website. The event will be hosted by some of our EACR Ambassadors: to read more about the EACR Ambassador Programme see pages 20-22.
Retirement of Robert Kenney, EACR Executive Director2015 saw the retirement of the EACR’s Executive Director of nine years, Robert Kenney. I had the pleasure of working with Rob for several years in my role as a Board member and Secretary General, and I wish him all the best for the future. You can read more about Rob’s time at the EACR on page 29.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new EACR Chief Operating Officer, Jane Smith, whom you can meet at the General Assembly in Manchester.

EACR24 Award Lectures
The Mike Price Gold Medal Award
The Mike Price Gold Medal is presented biennially to a senior
researcher who has made an exceptional contribution to cancer research in Europe.
The 2016 award will be presented to Professor Sir Michael Stratton.
Professor Stratton will receive the Mike Price Gold Medal and deliver the
closing lecture at EACR24.
Mike Stratton is Director of the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. His primary research interests have
been in the genetics of cancer. His early research focused on inherited susceptibility. He mapped and identified the

major high risk breast cancer susceptibility gene BRCA2 and subsequently a series of moderate risk breast cancer and other cancer susceptibility genes.
In 2000 he initiated the Cancer Genome Project at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute which conducts systematic genome-wide searches for somatic mutations in human cancer. Through these studies he discovered somatic mutations of the BRAF gene in malignant melanoma and several other mutated cancer genes in lung, renal, breast and other cancers. He has described the basic patterns of somatic mutation in cancer genomes revealing underlying DNA mutational and repair processes.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) and was knighted by the Queen in 2013.
The Pezcoller Foundation – EACR Cancer Researcher Award is presented biennially to a researcher of excellence
with no more than 15 years post-doctoral experience. The winner will receive an honorarium of €10,000 and give the prestigious Pezcoller Foundation – EACR Award Lecture at the EACR24 Congress.
The winner of the 2016 Pezcoller Foundation – EACR Cancer Researcher Award is Professor Yardena Samuels.
Yardena Samuels is a tenured Associate Professor at the Weizmann Institute, where she is the Incumbent of the Knell Family Professorial Chair. She is also the director of the
Ekard Institute for Cancer Diagnosis Research of the Moross Integrated Cancer Centre.
The Samuels laboratory uses various sequencing approaches to
identify the genetic changes that underlie melanoma. Once these mutations are identified, her group focuses on characterising the biochemical, functional, and clinical aspects of the most highly mutated genes.
