East Points Centennial Quilt - A History Lesson in Needlework

    Schedule:

    Thursdays 1 - 4pm

    Saturdays 11am - 3pm

In 1987, members of the East Point Womans Club stitched together

a quilt to commemorate East Points Centennial. Each of the 49squares helps tell the story of East Points history. The quilt is ondisplay at the East Point Historical Society. This is the sixth in a se-ries of East Point history lessons, as reflected in a sampling of thequilts squares.

NELLIES CHAPELEast Points first church was built in 1873 as a memorial to NellieThompson, the seven year old daughter of Dr. J.D. Thompson, one ofEast Points early founders. It served as the meeting place for manyother congregations until their church buildings could beerected. The building originally faced Main Street but was later

moved to face East Point Street. Additions were made and repairsmade after a major fire and it is now known as East Point AvenueUnited Methodist Church.

THE FAIRFAXThe Fairfax was one of three theaters in downtown East Point builtbeginning in the 1920s and reflecting the popularity of film enter-tainment. Gone With the Wind was released in 1939 in the hey-day of the movie industry. The Fairfax (Main Street) and the EastPoint Theater (Church Street) were demolished in the 1950s. TheRussell Theater (Jefferson Avenue and later renamed the East Point

Theater) operated in to the 1960s.

VICTORY PARKBuilt in 1970, this park is dedicated to East Points service men andwomen killed in war. The name comes from the USS East Point Vic-tory, a cargo ship launched in 1945, honoring East Points successin World War II loan drives and Red Cross activity. The ship was de-commissioned in 1969. Plaques removed from the ship wereplaced in the park along with a 1919 Howitzer machine gun and trib-utes to the war dead.
