UNDERPINNED WITH A LONG HISTORY IN

THE MINING INDUSTRY When miners go underground, they should feel confident that everything possible has been done for their safety. We have been working on this goal for more than 100 years.

The legendary closed-circuit breathing apparatus Dräger PSS BG 4, which is synonymous with safety in mines rescue, is the prime example of the unwavering reliability of Dräger products. This safety philosophy has proven its value in the toughest operating conditions worldwide. Using the same safety approach, Dräger’s RCM range of refuge chambers for the Australian mining industry is built on technology that you can rely on.

DESIGNED FOR AUSTRALIAN MINING

CONDITIONS

Dräger refuge chambers are designed for harsh Australian mining conditions. The heavy duty steel structure is full seam welded to improve strength, resist flexing and improve hull pressure integrity. Hardened skids, forklift slots and lifting lugs make the transport of chambers around the mine safe and simple. Dräger refuge chambers are designed to have low leakage rates and thus reduce the ingress of contaminants.

FAIL-SAFE BREATHING AIR SUPPLY

The provision of a respirable atmosphere at all times is critical in an underground emergency. Dräger refuge chambers have redundant air supply systems to ensure that the provision of safe and clean breathing air is uncompromised at all times during operation.

The mine air supply is filtered to AS1716 and released into the chamber. If mine air supply fails, and personnel have to remain inside the refuge for a longer period of time, the air inside the chamber is regenerated. The oxygen system releases a controlled amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide is removed using Drägersorb soda lime in the CO

2 scrubbing system.

CARBON MONOXIDE -

MONITORING & CONTROL

The Carbon Monoxide (CO) concentration within the refuge chamber is constantly monitored and controlled. Should a build-up of CO be detected during operation, the Dräger Positive Pressure Unit automatically dilutes and flushes the refuge chamber to a safe level.

Dräger Refuge Chamber

The Dräger RCM range of Refuge Chambers provides safety and breathing protection for personnel in an underground emergency. Their robust and highly portable construction, as well as their low cost of maintenance, makes them ideally suited to tough mining conditions in Australia. Dräger refuge chambers fully comply with the West Australian Guidelines.

POSITIVE PRESSURE - AN INDUSTRY

REQUIREMENT

The patented Dräger Positive Pressure Unit (PPU) provides positive pressure inside a refuge when the primary air supply fails or becomes compromised. The PPU stops the ingress of unwanted contaminants and reduces the build-up of hazardous gases. It also monitors and controls carbon monoxide.

Positive pressure in refuge chambers is a requirement of the West Australian Department of Mines and Petroleum Guideline (2013) – Refuge Chambers in Underground Mines.

The PPU can be retrofitted to your existing fleet of refuge chambers.

INDEPENDENCE FROM ON-SITE

INFRASTRUCTURE

In an emergency, it cannot be guaranteed that external power or air services remain available. Dräger Refuge Chambers are self-sufficient and do not depend on external air or power supplies to keep occupants safe – especially in Stand-Alone mode. The breathing air regeneration system provides clean breathing air; a large battery bank provides power for the emergency systems; and the climate control system keeps the chamber’s interior temperature and humidity at a safe level.

GAS DETECTION TECHNOLOGY FOR

MONITORING AND ALARM ACTIVATION

Inside the refuge chamber, the internal atmosphere is continuously monitored at all times for toxic gases and oxygen deficiency by Dräger’s industrial range of portable or fixed gas detection equipment. Dräger gas sensors react quickly and are built for longevity.

If predefined alert thresholds are exceeded, the gas monitors emit both visual and acoustic warning signals to warn the occupants within a matter of seconds of potential gas hazards. This gives them time to react to possible threats as quickly as possible.

MOVING WITH YOU -

THE MOBILE REFUGE SOLUTION

The risk of entrapment in development headings can be minimised by using small and portable refuge chambers. The Dräger four and six person refuge chambers are highly portable and can be fitted with transport attachments such as an IT hitch. In addition, these portable chambers have extra batteries to extend life and reduce the frequency of charging.

When they do need charging, this can be achieved easily through either mine power or a Macey outlet, which can connect the chamber to your mobile plant.

SUPPORT WITHOUT IFS AND BUTS

To ensure your chamber is always ready for use, we recommend having the unit checked by DrägerService at six monthly intervals. Our comprehensive and Australia-wide service network ensures

we can be on site quickly for all your maintenance and repair needs. To ensure you can rely on us at any time, we maintain stock of all required consumables, such as Dräger Soda lime, filters and gas detection components such as sensors. If you require support with chamber leakage tests or the calibration of gas measurement equipment, please give us a call.
