MANUFACTURING SALES DOWN 0.2%

In January, the number of people receiving regular Employment Insurance (EI) benefits fell for the third consec-utive month, down 8,500 (-1.6%) to 531,100. Compared with January 2012, the number of beneficiaries was down 8.8%.

Most provinces had fewer beneficiaries in January, with the largest percentage decreases occurring in Newfoundland

and Labrador, New Brunswick, Alberta and Manitoba.

The number of regular beneficiaries declined slightly in Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Ontario, while there was no change in British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan.

Retail sales rose 1.0% to $38.9 billion in January, partially offsetting the decline in December. Gains were reported in 7 of 11 subsectors, representing 52% of total retail trade. The increase was led by higher sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers.

After removing the effects of price changes, particularly higher prices at new car dealers, retail sales in volume terms were flat.

Canadian businesses had 221,000 job vacancies in December, unchanged from December 2011. There were 5.7 unemployed people for every job vacancy, little changed from 5.8 in December 2011.

Manufacturing sales edged down 0.2% in January to $48.0 billion, the fourth decline in five months. Sales in January were down in the transportation equipment industry as well as the petroleum and coal product industry. Overall, 7 of 21 industries posted lower sales in January, representing approxi-mately 52% of the manufacturing sector.

Durable goods sales declined 0.7% to $24.1 billion, while non-durable goods sales rose 0.3% to $23.9 billion.

Constant dollar sales fell 0.4% in January, indicating that the decline in manufac-tured goods sold was a result of lower volumes.

Unfilled orders increased 5.8% to $69.0 billion in January, the highest level since November 2008 ($69.3 billion). The gain stemmed almost entirely from higher unfilled orders in the aerospace product and parts industry. Unfilled orders are a stock of orders that will contribute to future sales assuming that they are not cancelled.

They called it a secret. In fact, it was literally called "the greatest secret in the world". And that secret was this: the key to success was that you only needed to be a small, measurable amount better than mediocrity to succeed.

Is that really true? In its simplest form it is. The book went on to tell of why this was true. And in short, they described how most people give up on the meaningful things they hope to accomplish.

Timber Hawkeye has a very simple guide to happiness - 2 words: be grateful. Gratitude turns what we have into enough. In this TEDx talk, Hawkeye observes that all of our suffering is self-inflicted, and that we have a misguided notion that happiness is something we have to "pursue." He shares some simple prescriptions for inner peace and tranquillity: slow down, sit. There is nothing you need to buy; nowhere you need to go. Just spend a few minutes each day taking inventory of everything in your life that is worth appreciating. If interested to know more, watch this you tube http://www.karmatube.org/videos.php?id=3631

Jim Flaherty's latest intervention in the mortgage market has drawn the ire of some of his fellow parliamentarians.

Fellow Conservative MP Brent Rathgeber remarked, "My own personal preference would be to let the market determine the rates and to have good healthy competition between players in the market. But if the minister's concerned there are other tactics I think that can be taken."

Liberal Leader Bob Rae also ques-tioned Flaherty's tactics. "You don't want ministers of finance instructing the banks to go out and lend to people who are not in a position to pay it back", Rae said.

Opposition leaders accused Jim Flaherty of interfering with decisions of private businesses acting under the rules he set, and of making it more expensive for Canadians to purchase a home.

Speaking after meeting with private sector economists as part of preparations for the spring budget, Flaherty noted the housing market has moderated, which he said was a good thing.

"As you know we've tightened up the mortgage insurance rules four times over the recent years. So I thank those Canadian financial institutions that have not chosen to reduce their rates further," the minister said.

Global Indian Market and Weekly Review - Week Ended 22 March 2013

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index (.GSPTSE) closed at 12, 757.35 (previous week: 12, 830.03) . Thus for the week, the TSX slipped 0.57 percent Canada's main stock index fell mainly because of investor anxiety over the threat of a debt default and banking meltdown in Cyprus. Stronger manufacturing data from China and the U.S. Federal Reserve's recommitment on Wednesday to its ongoing stimulus program prevented the fall from becoming steeper.

Energy stocks shed their initial gains and were down 0.1 percent as the price of oil fell back.

The materials group, which includes mining stocks, gave back 0.3 percent, with gold producers falling 0.5 percent. Gold prices fell 0.4 percent.

Gold stocks are down nearly 15 percent since the start of the year.

The Canadian dollar was at 97.72 (previous week 98.11) cents US.

The Dow Jones industrials closed at 14,512.03 ( last week 14,514.11), the Nasdaq at 3,245 (last week 3,244.37) and the S&P 500 index was at 1,556.89 (last week 1560.70).
