- Coastal communities are facing faster and more unpredictable changes

- Paraty (Caiçara communities) is currently impacted by different drivers, such as tourism growth, protected areas, industrial development, depletion of fish stocks, among others

- These changes impact the sustainability of both ecosystem services and human well-being

Purpose

To understand how drivers interact at

different spatial and temporal scales, and cause

changes in ecosystem services and human well-

being in Caiçara communities in the region of Paraty.

Conclusions

- Social and ecological aspects (human well-being and ecosystem services) may change due to different drivers;

- Protected areas and offshore oil are two (among many) currently important exogenous drivers in Paraty;

- Policies and management plans have to consider these different drivers to reach sustainability;

- Future options for coastal communities (ecosystem services and human well-being) are related to current drivers and uncertainties.
