Important Information!
WORKSHOP SELECTION: There is not a workshop sign‐up/selection process on the day of the PD conference, as in past years. Instead, staff will attend pre‐determined workshops.
LINC/ESL/FSL instructor staff will be divided into four groups:
Groups 1, 2: Morning: Attend the Curriculum Guidelines workshop Afternoon: Attend the CLB workshop
Groups 3, 4: Morning: Attend the CLB workshop Afternoon: Attend the Curriculum Guidelines workshop
REGISTRATION and CERTIFICATES OF ATTENDANCE: On arrival to the PD conference, register by picking up your registration package at the main floor registration desk (registration begins at 8:15 am).
Note that certificates of attendance are not be included in the registration package, and are only issued to those who attend the full day conference. The certificates are distributed at the end of the afternoon workshop. These documented hours can be used toward the 10 hours of professional development per year, as required for recertification by TESL Ontario.
Please note that certificates not picked up at the PD day conference will not be re‐issued.
NOTIFYING LEARNERS AND CO‐SPONSORING AGENCIES: For instructors who teach on Fridays, please notify your learners and if applicable, your co‐sponsoring agency program coordinator, classroom volunteers and TESOL practicum students about the February 13th class cancellation.
PARKING: Parking is available in the public underground parking at Crossways Plaza on the north‐east corner of Bloor and Dundas. There is no parking available on the school grounds. Bishop Marrocco‐Thomas Merton High School, located at the same intersection as the Dundas West subway station, is easily accessible by TTC. Do not park in the outside lot south of Coffee Time. You will have a good chance of being towed!
COAT ROOM: A coat room is available for your use on the 3rd floor.
LUNCH: Please join us for a complimentary lunch (vegetarian) in the cafeteria on the lower floor; a publishers’ display will be open during the lunch break in the cafeteria.
EVALUATION: There is a Professional Development Conference Evaluation Form in your registration package. Please complete and give your evaluation form to the room monitor at the end of the afternoon workshop. Your constructive feedback is highly appreciated.

Curriculum Guidelines for the Ontario Adult Non‐Credit Language Training Program
Target audience: LINC/ESL/FSL instructors

This hands‐on workshop provides an overview of the forthcoming Curriculum Guidelines for the Ontario Adult Non‐Credit ESL/FSL Program. The presenters will walk you through the interactive planning tools and resources for building course and unit outlines as well as lesson plans. You will have an opportunity to browse the built‐in resources and create sample courses, units and lessons. There are computers available, but feel free to bring your own laptop or tablet (a TCDSB username and password is needed to access the Internet).
Presenters: Sharon Rajabi and Anne‐Marie Kaskens
Sharon Rajabi is the Budget & Operations Program Consultant for the TCDSB and manages the Ontario Curriculum Guidelines Project.
Anne‐Marie Kaskens is a program consultant for the TCDSB, and is team leader for the Ontario Curriculum Guidelines project.

Orientation to the Canadian Language Benchmarks and the CLB Exemplars
Target audience: LINC/ESL/FSL instructors

This workshop provides an orientation to the revised Canadian Language Benchmarks and focuses on how specific sections of the document can be used for planning and assessment. The workshop also includes a look at the CLB Exemplars found in the CLB Support Kit.
Presenters: Anne Hajer and Anne Senior
Anne Hajer has been working in the field of adult ESL for thirty years, initially as an ESL and LINC instructor and currently as a freelance consultant doing curriculum writing, online course development and facilitation and teacher training.
Anne Senior is a specialist consultant with the Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks with over 20 years of experience working in the fields of second language assessment and training.

Morning Workshops
9:45‐11:00 Sharing Sensitive Information with Parents
Target audience: Nursery Staff Educators say that one of the hardest aspects of their job is when they need to share sensitive information with parents regarding their child’s development. This workshop will help educators by providing specific strategies on how to share sensitive information with parents, focusing on active listening and positive collaboration. Presenters: Susie Neves and Cris Stathopoulos Susie Neves is the resource instructor for the TCDSB Adult Education Nursery program. Cris Stathopoulos is a TCDSB Nursery Program Consultant.
11:00‐11:45 Conflict Resolution
Target audience: Nursery Staff This hands‐on workshop will explore conflict resolution experiences and strategies. Presenters: Naomi Paramanantham and Cris Stathopoulos Naomi Paramanantham is a TCDSB Nursery Program Consultant. Cris Stathopoulos is a TCDSB Nursery Program Consultant.
Afternoon Workshop
12:30‐2:30 Sharing our Experiences: A Round Table Discussion
Target audience: Nursery Staff Based on the current trend in the field of ECE, where child‐centered planning and Emergent Curriculum is practiced, the nursery instructors from each site will present an area of interest that they observed based on children’s cues, that was fun and successful. All participants will receive copies of program plans and supporting documentation to keep at their centres for reference. Presenters: Nursery Staff All nursery staff working for the TCDSB Adult Education Program are qualified Early Childhood Educators who have been in the field for more than 20 years.

Administrative Assistant & LBS Staff Morning Workshops
9:45-11:45 Conflict Resolution Through Effective Communication
Target audience: Administrative Assistants This workshop defines conflict, looks at different stages of conflict and introduces participants to the five most common conflict resolution styles. Participants examine a variety of work‐related situations and identify the best‐fitting style(s) for their management and/or resolution. Participants also practise several conversation management techniques in order to enhance their verbal communication skills. Presenter: Ekaterina Demeneva Ekaterina Demeneva is an accomplished professional in ESL and project management. Her expertise lies in teaching workplace communication to newcomers to Canada, EAP, curriculum development and delivering cross‐cultural training. She holds graduate degrees in Linguistics and Second Language Education. She is passionate about helping newcomers successfully integrate into Canadian society and the Canadian workplace.
9:45-11:45 Sharing Best Practices in Managing Students’ Files
Target audience: LBS instructors This workshop will invite LBS instructors to share their best practices in managing students' files. We will discuss the most common concerns regarding bookkeeping and accuracy in CaMS. Real cases will be viewed and analyzed. Presenter: Adriana Ungureanu Adriana Ungureanu has been with the TCDSB Adult Education program since 2009, when she began an instructor position in the LBS program. She is currently the LBS resource teacher and administrator. In the past she was an ESL instructor with the Learning Enrichment Foundation and with the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board. She has a TESOL certificate from the University of Toronto, a bachelor degree in English and Geography and a Masters in Public Relations.
Afternoon Workshop
12:30-2:30 Conflict Resolution in Culturally Diverse Teams
Target audience: Administrative Assistants and LBS Instructors Participants will look at benefits and costs of the five conflict resolution styles, as well as factors affecting our response to conflict. Cultural differences in dealing with conflict and dynamics of power in the relationship will be examined and discussed, among other factors. Focus will be put on developing flexibility and the ability to use each of the five styles skillfully in the appropriate circumstance.
