DURASLOT Surface Drains are HDPE smooth wall pipe with aluminum inlets mounted

along the crown. These products offer a long lasting, efficient, economical method in linear surface drain design.

AVAILABLE - with 2 1/2" or 6" slot heights with or without ½-#13 galvanized steel grates. The aluminum slot is mounted on 4" - 36" diameter smooth interior wall HDPE pipe.

DURASLOT® Product Data

Purpose: DURASLOT Surface Drains are designed to pick up storm water as it flows

across paved or cleared areas, or as it collects in low spots. It can be substituted for corrugated steel slotted drain, precast trench drains (ACO, Polydrain, etc.), or cast-in-place trench drains with steel or cast iron grates. Savings for both materials and installation can be realized through the use of DURASLOT surface drains.

Description: DURASLOT Surface Drains are made from double wall (corrugated outside, smooth inside) polyethylene drainage pipe with an aluminum slot mounted on top. Strong and light, they are easy to handle and install and are extremely corrosion-resistant.

Pipe Diameter - 4" up to 36" Slot Height - 2½" for residential and pedestrian applications - 6" for H-20 loading (heavy traffic) - variable height slot to provide slope in the pipe invert at level grade (available as a special order) Slot Opening - 1¼" wide in 4" diameter - 1¾" wide in 6" diameter and up Grate Options - ½ - #13 galvanized steel (stock standard) - open top without grate (available standard)

DURASLOT saves money over other systems which can support vehicular traffic. Not only is the product inexpensive, but it costs less to install - lightweight ten foot lengths can be handled without machinery and set in place quickly and easily. DURASLOT® Surface Drain Specification

DURASLOT Surface Drains shall be manufactured from corrugated polyethylene pipe with a smooth interior wall, pipe and fittings conforming to AASHTO M252 and/or M294. A grate frame, that forms a slot, shall be mounted in the pipe so as to provide a linear inlet into the top of the pipe to collect surface runoff. The slot shall be manufactured from .063 tempered commercial aluminum and shall have two parallel plates separated by vertical spacers spanning the slot on 6" centers. The grating within the slot opening shall be ½ - #13 galvanized steel. The slot shall be coated with a primer to protect the aluminum when installed in concrete. The flange at the bottom of the slot shall be riveted to the pipe with a minimum of two rivets per linear foot. The pipe shall have a section removed to accept the slot so as to maintain the original diameter, providing ease in transition to conventional systems (see DURASLOT Fittings). Sizes and dimensions shall conform to the information on the DURASLOT Physical Dimensions worksheets for the pipe diameter and slot height specified.

DURASLOT® Installation Practices

DURASLOT Surface Drains are made from a flexible conduit, which is designed to attain its structural strength utilizing ring compression derived from soil pressure. For this to occur, a minimum height of cover is required. Since this is not possible, the drain must be backfilled with concrete to allow it to accept vehicular traffic. This is true of any pipe with an inlet mounted on top to form this type of surface drain. The pipe cannot function in the manner for which it was designed when it is installed this close to the surface. The concrete-filled trench provides the actual structure for this type of design. Following are some of the most often utilized installation details for DURASLOT surface drains. (A) Heavy Traffic - completely surrounded by concrete for critical loading applications. This

would include frequent high-speed H-20 traffic, such as a highway. The dimensions 'S' and 'B' are generally 3" to 6" depending on the specific conditions for the project (design layout, traffic patterns, soil properties, etc.) (B) Moderate Traffic - surrounded by concrete to below the center of the pipe. This type of installation has been used when traffic loads are not as heavy (i.e., retail parking lots, against curbs, etc.). The soil below the pipe and concrete must be high quality and well compacted.

(C) Residential / Pedestrian Applications – concrete, asphalt, or soil concrete slab at grade. For

non-vehicular installations (patios, sidewalks, against foundations, and landscaping projects) there still must be a surface adjoining the slot which will not erode where stormwater flows into the slotted inlet.

(D) Perforated Pipe for Stormwater Recharge – concrete down to below the springline. Pipe

perforated in the bottom quadrant set in a filter fabric lined and stone-filled trench to allow surface drainage to recharge into the ground water. For moderate or light traffic only.

DURASLOT® Variable Height Slot

DURASLOT® with a Variable Height Slot is available to provide slope in the pipe invert

when grade is level. Standard 1/2 % slope is readily available; other slopes can be made by special order. Information and Design Guidelines • Lengths remain at 10' with change in slot height is 5/8" per length. This is a nominal 1/2%

slope (actual slope is .52%). • Maximum slot height should not exceed 1.5 times the pipe diameter before consulting the

• On the following drawing and table, N1 and N2 are nominal slot heights. For the difference

between “nominal” slot height and the “actual” slot height click here. • Light traffic applications can start with V1. • Moderate traffic applications can start with V4. • Heavy traffic applications can start with V7. • A second spacer (on 6" centers) is utilized within the slot when H1 (actual slot height)

reaches 9 1/4". More spacers are added as slot height increases. • Bands are made so that their band angles meet grade at each joint so that a continuous slot is

DURASLOT® Band Assembly (Small Diameter)

If grating is utilized in the slot opening, this assembly is performed as Step (5) in conjunction with Grate Connector Assembly. If no grating is used, this is the complete procedure for joining lengths of DURASLOT to each other. 1) Set DURASLOT (S1) in place. 2) Wrap Band around end of (S1) leaving holes in Band Angles past the end of the slot. 3) Slide DURASLOT (S2) into open end of Band. 4) Insert Thumbscrew (A) through holes in Band Angles with spacer sleeve (B) in the gap.

Tighten Wingnut (C) to provide a continuous slot. Note: This procedure is used to assemble the following DURASLOT sizes: 12” w/ 2 ½” slot, and all sizes 10” and below with 6” or 2 ½” slot. This procedure is also used for all DURASLOT without grating in the slot opening. If grating is utilized in the slot opening, this assembly is performed as Step (5) in conjunction with Grate Connector Assembly. This procedure is for all 12” diameter and greater with 6” slot height or taller. 1) Set DURASLOT (S1) in place. 2) Wrap Band around end of (S1) leaving holes in Band Angles past the end of the slot. 3) Slide DURASLOT (S2) into open end of Band. 4) Insert Thumbscrew (A) through holes in Band Angles with spacer sleeve (B) in the gap.

Tighten Wingnut (C) to provide a continuous slot. 5) Repeat this procedure for the Hex Head Assembly (D, E, F) near the top of the Band after

DURASLOT® Grate Connector Assembly STEP SEQUENCE: 1) Put first section (S1) of DURASLOT in place. 2) Put grate connector (D) under grate on DURASLOT section (S1). 3) Screw slotted pan head (A) with washer (B) through grate at point (E) into recessed nut (C) to fasten grate to connector (D). 4) Position next piece (S2) of DURASLOT so that (D) slides under grate. 5) Bolt band assembly (F) around pipe ends (see BAND ASSEMBLY detail). 6) Repeat Step 3 into second section (S2) of DURASLOT. 7) When connector is in place, bolt 3” hex head (with washer) through the upper hole and

secure with hex head nut and washer. This is for 12 inch diameter and larger with 6 inch slot or taller (see BAND ASSEMBLY detail).

DURASLOT® Grate Anchor At the end of each run of DURASLOT drains, the grate should be anchored into the concrete that is poured around the structure. This will keep the grate in tension for maximum strength and prevent the end of the grate from being pushed down into the slot. The anchor is attached to a plate that closes off the end of the slot. In general, these are used in conjunction with an end cap or an adapter fitting that connects DURASLOT to an outflow pipe.

Assembly: Put the recessed nut (C) under the end of the DURASLOT grate so that the grate anchor (D) extends into the area where concrete will be poured. Fasten ¼" x ¾" screw (A) and ¼" washer (B) through the grate into (C). Note: A Grate Anchor is included with every End Cap or Adapter that is ordered.

DURASLOT® Slot Cap At the end of each run of DURASLOT the end of the slot is open. When grating is utilized and a grate anchor is installed, this slot end is then covered. When grating is not used, a slot cap should be installed so that concrete does not get into the end of the slot.

DURASLOT® Nominal Slot Height vs. Actual Slot Height

On the DURASLOT Slot Dimensions Tables we see H (2 ½” slot) or H (6” slot), where “H” is the Actual Slot Height from the inside pipe wall to the top of the slot. The nominal slot height is 2 ½ inches (or 6 inches) for standard DURASLOT (as it is for most other manufacturers’ slotted drain pipe). The Nominal Slot Height would be the distance marked “N” below, the Actual Slot Height is “H”. “N” measures from the top of slot down into the area “X”. “X” includes the area from the top of pipe wall down to ½ the wall thickness (X = ½ W on Slot Dimensions Table).

DURASLOT® Installation Notes

The top of the DURASLOT at the slot opening should always be set below finished

grade. This allows surface run-off to enter the inlet efficiently and protects the grate and flanges from snowplows and the like. A mason’s tool can be used to knurl the edge after the tape or 2” x 4” has been removed.

It is important that all fittings and hardware are used when DURASLOT is installed. The product is designed as a system; all grate connectors and anchors must be used to keep the grate in tension, and to tie the ends of the grate into the concrete or asphalt. At the end of each run an end cap or adapter should always be utilized (these include the anchor). Only DURASLOT Couplers should be used to join sections of DURASLOT. DURASLOT® Inlet Hydraulics DURASLOT surface drains have the same inlet hydraulics as that of CSP slotted type drains. A 1 ¾” wide opening runs the length of the pipe and special coupler bands provide for a continuous slot. For curb and gutter applications or flow in a triangular channel, the inlet acts as an orifice and the AISI Handbook1 method can be used.

In most applications the slot is utilized to intercept sheet flow moving approximately perpendicular to the length of the slot. In this case the slot acts as a weir. Some studies have been done by FHWA and CalTrans for this type of application. While exact inlet capacity (or an equation to describe it) is not available for all situations, a ‘rule of thumb’ has evolved. For conditions where sheet flow velocity is not extremely high (an exception would be a steep slope down to the slot), a slotted inlet of this type will handle a minimum of 0.04 cfs/foot of slot length. This rule of thumb has been verified by independent testing commissioned by HCPS. Three tables on the next page show inlet capacity in cfs/foot of inlet for three conditions:

1) 1 ¾” wide slot with standard ½ - #13 galvanized steel grate; 2) 1 ¾” wide slot with open top; 3) 1 ¼” wide slot with standard ½ - #13 galvanized steel grate (on 4” diameter pipe).

DURASLOT® Installation Notes for Tall Slots

When special slots are specified or variable height slots are utilized in long runs then

very tall slots (greater than 18”) can result. Some special attention should be taken when installing DURASLOT drains with very tall slots.

The biggest concern is keeping the slot vertical. It may want to fall to one side if not

properly secured.

DURASLOT® TRACKSLOT Surface Drain

A special slot configuration for use with synthetic track surfaces is now available as an option on DURASLOT Drains. A detail of this TRACKSLOT is shown below; the specification is on the following page. A plan layout for a 400m track is also included. This layout can be used for TRACKSLOT, regular DURASLOT, or a combination of both. Outflow tees or plastic catch basins (i.e. NYLOPLAST) can be utilized on regular intervals around the track. These are often spaced at 40m (10), 50m (8) or 220 feet (6). At these points water can be emptied into trunk lines or onsite retention/recharge systems.

DURASLOT® TRACKSLOT Surface Drain Specification

DURASLOT TRACKSLOT Surface Drains shall be manufactured from corrugated

polyethylene pipe with a smooth interior wall, pipe and fittings conforming to AASHTO M252. A grate frame, that forms a slot, shall be mounted in the pipe so as to provide a linear inlet into the top of the pipe to collect surface runoff. The slot shall be manufactured from .063 tempered commercial aluminum and shall have two parallel plates separated by vertical spacers spanning the slot on 6" centers. On top of the slot, two angles shall be bent upward forming the TRACKSLOT. Weep holes (1/4” dia.) shall be provided 12” o.c. alternately on each side of the slot. The sides of the slot shall be coated with a primer to protect the aluminum when installed in concrete. The flange at the bottom of the slot shall be riveted to the pipe with a minimum of two rivets per linear foot. The pipe shall have a section removed to accept the slot so as to maintain the original diameter, providing ease in transition to conventional systems (see DURASLOT Fittings). Sizes and dimensions shall conform to the information on the DURASLOT TRACKSLOT Details.
