Convoluted Hose Metallic Excellence in liquid and gas transfer applications
Temperature
Contingent upon the extremes of temperature hot or cold, metal is a positive choice as it can withstand temperatureextremes.
Chemicals
Metal hose is an excellent option as it effectively controls exposure to a wide range of chemicals both internal andexternal.
Permeation
Metal hose is not subject to permeation whereas non metal hose can allow permeation through the hose wallmaterial. We have Australian Gas Approved (AGA) certified hose to assure customers of compliance.
Failure
Generally speaking, metal hoses do not disintegrate rapidly causing any major failure. Warning signs are evident thatleaks are evident and the medium escapes gradually. Non metallic hoses can be prone to sudden failure.
External Abrasion and Overbending
A range of options exist to prevent these occurrences; including external braid, spring guards, rubber and PVC coversand protective sleeves.
Heat and fire
Our metal hoses maintain form and structure up to 700 Deg C
Vacuum
Where other hose products will collapse, our metal hose will maintain shape underfull vacuum.
Fittings
We can adapt virtually any fittings to a metal hose - other hose products requirespecial and significant variances. We specialize in providing flexible options.

Corrugation DesignThe corrugated hose is manufactured from a cylindrical, thin walledtube formed from rolled strip and welded at the seam. Impressed intothis tube is a corrugated annular profile. Annular corrugation meanseach convolution is perpendicular to the centre line of the hose giving adistinct advantage of movement with each corrugation being relativelyindependent of movement from each other. When the corrugations areclosely spaced, the hose is referred to as closed pitch hose. Conversely, when the corrugations are more widely spaced, the hose is referred to asopen pitch.
When needing greater flexibility Omega style hose is ideal. It has a higherflexing cycle life because of the increase in the number of convolutionsper metre without thinning the wall of the hose. The corrugationshave the tendency to spring back to their original position when thedisplacement forces are removed.
Corrugated Stainless Steel Metallic Hose
ApplicationThe Stainless steel corrugated hose is especially designed to achieveseveral objectives in pipe work design. These include, absorptionor vibration, operate under vacuum, handle temperature extremes, suppress rigid pipe noise transmitted, accommodate reciprocating andflexing movement, operate effectively under high pressures and adjustor correct for misalignment.
CompositionStainless steel corrugated hose is a general purpose industrial hose andis available in different grades of stainless steel including 304, 316, 321& Monel.

Stainless Steel Hose DesignSTAINLESS STEEL HOSESTAINLESS STEEL HOSE
FlexibilityThe flexibility of the corrugated hose is the result of thebending of the metal corrugations. Service life variesdepending upon the severity of the flexing, temperature, corrosive conditions, pressure and vibration to which thehose is subjected.
Unless restrained, corrugated hose will elongate whensubjected to increased internal pressure. Restraint isprovided by a braided covering, consisting of a tubularsheath of woven metal wires fitted tightly over thecorrugated hose and secured at each end. Bendingand flexibility of the corrugated hose is not appreciablyaffected by the wire braid covering.
BraidStainless steel wire braid (SS1) on the hose assemblyprovides the hose with a higher internal pressurecapability by acting as a restraint against hoseelongation, and acts to dampen vibration withoutsignificant loss of flexibility.
A second layer of braid (SS2) may be used to increasepressure rating. The test pressure is not to be exceededor it may incur permanent corrugation deformation.
Unbraided hose is satisfactory for vacuum and lowpressure applications and for protection against verminand abrasion.
Jacketed HoseJacketed hose assemblies are made up of two flexible hose units, one inside another. Bothinner and outer hoses act independently as separate pressure carriers. The outer hosesurrounds the product chamber to keep the products warm or cold.
The media typically is steam, hot oil or hot water to raise the temperature of the fluid movedin the internal hose. Also cold products such as liquid helium or nitrogen can be used to lowerthe temperature of the fluid with in the internal hose.
Pressure lossWhen planning piping systems, the pressure loss ofthe medium is important, in addition to the hosepressure resistance and flexibility. At equal flow ratesthe pressure loss is higher in metal hose rather thanrigid piping. This is caused by the corrugations. It canbe assumed that the pressure loss in corrugated hosesis 100% higher than in new welded steel pipes and instripwound or metal interlock hoses it is 20% higher.
Therefore in the case of corrugated hoses an increasein diameter of 15% and a stripwound or metalinterlock hoses 4% is sufficient to reduce the pressureloss to the same value as new steel pipe.
Vibration information and graphThe inherent flexibility of corrugated hose plus thedampening effect of the wire braid combine to createthe excellent vibration isolation qualities of corrugatedmetal hose. The graph below defines the combinationof amplitudes and frequencies considered to benormal industrial vibration.

CoverTo protect the Stainless steel hose from unusual external abuse you can use different armours and covers suchas: stainless steel interlock, heat shrink, lay-flat, scuff guarding, fire sleeve, fibre glass tape, PVC, rubber and wirespring-guard.

LinersThe most common liner used in a corrugated hose is a metal interlock hose. The liner will allow a smooth flowrate whilst maintaining limited flexibility. The interlock will partially reduce the bend radius and inside diameterof the corrugated hose. The smooth liners reduce associated noise.
Interlock LinerBraid Liner
Flow Velocity ConsiderationThe flow velocity in corrugated metal hose should neverexceed 150/ftsec for gas, or 75 ft/sec for liquids. When the hoseis installed in a bent condition, these flow values should bereduced proportionally to the degree of the bend. Where the flowvelocity exceeds these rates, an interlocked metal hose liner isrecommended.
Service LifeThe Stainless steel corrugated hose is engineered to providemaximum service life when properly installed. Incorrectinstallation, incorrect flexing or careless handling in an applicationwill reduce the effective service life of the hose and causepremature failure of an assembly. The service life can be affected
by many external factors, the environment surrounding theassembly as well as the media being transferred will togetherdetermine a general guide to the service life.
Pressure/TestingThe nominal pressure rating of a corrugated stainless hose variesaccording to type, material and size. The pressure can be affectedby factors such as temperature, pulsation or shock conditions andbending stresses. To avoid distortion of the convolutions of thehose, the maximum test pressure quoted in the literature must notbe exceeded. If requested all hoses can be tested to 112times thecustomers stated working pressure, provided that this does notexceed the stated maximum test pressure.
CleaningPacific Hoseflex can clean their manufactured assemblies forgas, air and oxygen use. The different hose assemblies rangefrom stainless steel corrugated hose to Teflon hoses. The VapourCleaning Tank cleans the assemblies when they are lowered intothe vapour zone, the vapour condenses on the cold work andwashes the grease and oil away. This process is enhanced by theeffect of the higher temperature. When the temperature of thework attains that of the vapour, there is no further condensation, and the cleaning action ceases.
ApprovalsIf required your hoses can be manufactured for use with gas.We are accredited to Gas Approval Standard AG 216 and ourStainless steel corrugated hose will be manufactured on request tostandard ISO 9001:2008 and to International Standard ISO10380

Do not compress or extend axially.Corrugated metal hose installed in-line with the longitudinalaxis of the piping should not be subjected to axialmovement.
Do not torque during installation.Metal hose assemblies should not be used to compensatefor bolt hole misalignment. Floating flanges will help tominimize twisting of the metal hose. Pipe unions will help toreduce twisting during connection to the piping. The use of
two wrenches will help to keep the hose from twisting whentightening the pipe union.
Do not allow hose movement in multiple planes.
Flexing a metal hose in two separate planes of movementwill torque the hose assembly. Always install the metal hoseassembly so that flexing occurs in one plane only and this isthe same plane in which bending occurs.
Avoid sharp bends.
Use elbows to avoid severe bends near the end of the metalhose assembly.
Maintain minimum centreline bend radius. The minimum centreline bend radius for dynamic flexingshould never be less than the values in the productspecification tables.

Seismic Joints and Expansion LoopsFlexible loop applications that include thermal expansion and contraction, and/or building expansion and contraction(singularly or in combination with seismic considerations), are engineered by the system designer to account for thecumulative movement(s) of each individual system.
Piping used in applications and locations subject to seismic conditions have their own set of unexpected randommovements. The random motion common to earthquakes requires that seismic expansion joints be capable ofmovement in any direction. Of the 6 possible directions, PHF sees axial movement of the hose in only two of themcompared to four in an L shaped assembly. Seismic expansion joints orientation can be changed relative to thepiping, further minimizing the likelihood of compressive movement.
Significant cost and safety benefits found in Pacific Hoseflex seismic expansion joints.
It is an inexpensive alternative to dual-tied bellows expansion joints and especially ball joints.
During an earthquake, it protects equipment by allowing boilers, chillers, fan-coil units and other systems to move
independently of the building.
Installed at the connection also prevents nozzles from cracking or shearing off.
A break in the gas pipework could start a fire, which can of course be devastating. This Australian Gas Approval
(AGA) - certified seismic expansion joint will compensate for the movement that occurs during any seismic activitysuch as an earthquake.

Stripwound hose is manufactured from a helically wound profiledstrip, with the strip edges being completely interlocked. The diameterof the hose remains constant when hose is cut. The hose is availablewith or without a packing groove.
Individual strips are connected together by overlapping and flexibilityis obtained by the adjacent turns sliding on each other. When compared to other types of flexible hose, the Stripwoundproduct is known for its strength, durability and ability to acceptboth axial and lateral movements. The packed hose has a continuousfilament of thread, rubber or metal constructing the locking section.
Galvanised stripwound offers significantly lower initial cost for applications where performance ofstainless steel is not required however the stainless steel offers longer service life and freedom fromcorrosion. The superior visual appearance and higher operating temperature capability of stainlesssteel may also be important in certain applications. Particularly suitable for absorbing vibration andthermal expansion in engine exhaust systems for both commercial and industrial applications. Also toaccommodate bends and offsets in solid fuel burning installations or in other ducting applications.
Hose assemblies are available in various standard lengths, or prepared to the customers specificrequirements. Hoses are supplied in mid position unless otherwise specified. Hoses without end fittingsmay be attached directly to manifolds by clamping. End fittings may be attached by welding or brazingusing a suitable filler rod.

The interlock is specially wound into a double interlock hose from two separatemetal strips. The double interlock hose is manufactured for the purpose ofproducing a liner to create a moderately smooth inner bore.
The inner will provide a higher flow rate giving the hose a variety of advantagessuch as nil air loss from its tighter construction, elimination of materialsdegradation and contamination experienced with other hoses, as well as a longerservice life due to greater abrasion resistance.
Applications may include large volume transfer of dry bulk materials, difficult tofluidize materials in industrial plants, ships, barges, silos, elevators, trucks andrail units. Uses include pneumatic transfer of bulk materials in powder, pellet, granules, flake or pebble form such as chemicals, feed, flour, grain, plastics, sugar, cement, pebble, lime and sintered iron ore.
