There are many reasons why a student would want to join Eagle Pride, which is by definition a service club at GWHS. In GWHS, there are many opportunities for students to discover the gift of volunteering for a better, noble cause. Created in May 2009 and sponsored by Mr. Jackson, Eagle Pride is one of these opportunities where innovation and efficiency work simultaneously for students to experience doing something without getting anything in return. As one of the newest service clubs created, EP has developed a whole new way of volunteering. They offer students the chance to volunteer without any limitations or boundaries. Students in this club are free to volunteer whenever they like because GPA and minimum hour’s requirements are crossed out of the picture. Members are allowed to concentrate on their education and other extracurricular activities while having the option to volunteer that fits their schedule.

Eagle Pride strives to be a positive impact on the school and the community they serve. We realized that with fewer limitations comes more drive and dedication from our members. In the Freshmen Leadership Institute (FLI), for example, members efficiently assisted staff members on paperwork and food; and helped incoming freshmen on directions and feeling comfortable in this school. Eagle Pride has also made connections with the Beacon Food Pantry where students are able to volunteer monthly in the Richmond District Neighborhood Center by unpacking and handing out food to the disadvantaged.

May 2 - 6 is Teacher Appreciation

Week. Eagle Pride will once again honor teachers and staff by sending them thank you note and a little treat. We sincerely appreciate everyone’s effort in making our four year stay at Washington a rewarding and enriching experience.

The impact of Eagle Pride and my life: When I first joined Eagle Pride in the summer of 2010, I was hesitant on whether I would fit in or be accepted. But of course, with such a great environment like theirs, Eagle Pride’s members and officers were all welcoming when I first volunteered at my first volunteering event. They were all so friendly, caring, and thoughtful on how I felt and how comfortable I was. It felt like I belonged, like a family unit. And so, as my sophomore year unraveled, I found myself taking a lead in this group of 357 students in the middle of the year. As an officer, I learned to strengthen my skills as a leader from all of the responsibilities I hold and the stature it takes to fulfill my duties. With the help of Eagle Pride, I am now a more confident leader, able to take what all I have learned from this club to school and in life.

EAGLE PRIDE

By Reina Ota, Eagle Pride VP of Outreach and Class of 2013 Executive Council

There are over 50 clubs at GWHS, however Eagle Pride is rising to one of the top and

making way for service that is truly from the heart. For example, we eliminated the GPA and

hour requirement to no requirement; anyone who is willing to help out should have the

opportunity to do so. EP finds new and different approaches in providing students with

volunteer opportunities to help make a difference.

How EP impacted my life:

The reason why I think EP is so amazing is because everyone knows each other like a

family. Just in eight months, I met so many new people from

different schools and grade levels, and now we are like best

friends. We really watch out for each other and we’re all very

close. We work together to help promote our own club that we

love because we want others to know how great EP is. We

volunteered at the club fair for freshmen orientation (FLI) and

we got around 70 new freshmen members. We are excited to have them being part of our

family. And I hope they will learn many things from us like I did.

I really love how EP is very flexible and how volunteers can just sign up for the events

they want to participate in. Everyone can volunteer during their spare time without their other

commitments being interrupted. That is why EP has a very simple sign up system. Members

are able to find all the information and all the volunteer opportunities on an organized website,

which is very convenient!

Eagle Pride taught me how to be a leader, and how to

make our club more efficient and convenient for all of our

members. When I got more involved with EP, I got to help

out with the officers and see how they keep everything so

organized. For example, all the officers call all the volunteers

(yes, even if it’s more than 100 people) and confirm if they

are still volunteering, make sure they know all the important

information, and remind them to bring their waiver if they need one. Without the dedicated

officers, EP would not have been successful. Eagle Pride helped me to gain the courage to run

for student government because they taught me about organizational and communication skills

I need in order for me to be successful.

Encourage your child to join Eagle Pride today. Membership is opened year round.

Eagle Pride – it’s so much more than just a club. When I think ofEagle Pride, I think extraordinary, revolutionary, and epic.

Extraordinary- because it’s a source of hope for the future.Students want to make a difference in their community, so they didsomething about it, they established Eagle Pride.

Revolutionary- because Eagle Pride has truly changed the meaning of volunteering. In the past, volunteering was a form ofpunishment or something students did to make their college applications look good. Now students can’t get enough of it. Why youask? Because with EP, it’s a productive, positive, and a fun way for students to spend their time. Instead of staying home playingvideo games, stuck on the computer or getting into trouble, they’re out there having fun and making a difference.

Epic- because Eagle Pride is unlike any other service club. Eagle Pride is very much like a family. The EP officers know theirmembers (as far as schedule and availability to volunteer) and of course that’s after a couple of events. For example, the officerswould know if someone had Chinese school meaning that day isn’t available or sports, or any other activity they may have, etc. It’s vital that everyone connects and understands one another in order for any and all events to run smoothly. Why choose Eagle Pride? EP has the best events! We are sought after by event organizers because we do a great job and they cansee that we really enjoy helping out. Our events are fun because we get the best shifts and are well organized, so sign up, spacesfill up real quick.

EP makes it very convenient and fun to volunteer, it fits easily into our hectic schedules. We meet onlywhen necessary, especially if there is a huge event coming up. Everything is conducted online, whichis a huge time saver and a necessity because we have members from other schools.

Students like to do things that are fun, things they can enjoy such as hanging out with their friends. That is why EP encourages all their members to invite their friends to any and all of the events. Byvolunteering with friends, it no longer feels like something you have to do, but rather something youwant to do. It’s also great that EP is not limited to Washington students, so friends from other schoolscan become members and participate in our events.

That’s really the best part, being able to do something great with your friends from Washington and outside of Washington.Eagle Pride gives everyone a chance to make a change. EP does not have a GPA requirement which opens so many doors forstudents who may not excel academically and may in other areas. And with an open membership all year long, new members arealways welcomed. I’ve met so many great people that I wouldn’t have if it wasn’t for Eagle Pride. Currently, EP has about 340members and still growing.

Not only does it allow students from different schools the opportunity to give back to their community, EP strives to make it justas fun for the volunteers as it is rewarding for those who receive our service.

In May 2009, Eagle Pride was approved as

a service club at GWHS. We pride

ourselves as a service club and dedicate

our time to serve the different segments

of GWHS community such as student

government, PTSA, school clubs and

various community organizations. Our

mission is “...to provide a safe place for

students to gather and an atmosphere

that encourages them to take pride as an

Eagle with an opportunity to contribute

to work that will promote school spirit

and unity.”

We are new, young and innovative. We

have no GPA or minimum hours of service

requirement. We believe everyone who

has the heart to serve should be given

the opportunity to. Our volunteer

opportunities are open to all, including

students from other schools.

SCHOOL SERVICE

We work closely with Student

Government and provide fund raising

events for the senior, junior and

sophomore class. Our next goal is to

provide fund raising events for ASB and

the freshman class.

Eagle Pride is committed to assist

teachers and staff whenever there is a

need, such as stuffing envelopes or

helping in the bookroom. We are

requested to assist at various school

functions such as the Welcome Back

Teachers Breakfast, Freshmen

Orientation, College Expo, Back to School

Night Teachers Dinner, 8th Grade Open

House and the Bell Games.

Eagle Pride formed the Neighborhood

Cleanup Crew to help keep the

neighborhood around GWHS clean.

Members pick up trash daily at lunch

time on 32nd Ave. Our goal is to assist

Mrs. Lovrin from this task and to save our

school from losing its off-campus lunch

privilege.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Eagle Pride thrives on giving back to our

community. We’ve racked up 4,266

community hours volunteering at various

community events such as the AIDS Walk

San Francisco, Nihonmachi Street Fair,

San Francisco Aloha Festival, and the

Richmond Village Beacon Food Bank. We

were happy to help out the Special

Olympics with their last minute

volunteer needs. We felt honored to be

invited to volunteer at the prestigious

Presidents Cup Tournament. We also

look forward to volunteering at the Green

Festival in November and North Face

Endurance Challenge in December.

FUND RAISING EVENTS

Eagle Pride actively seeks fund raising

opportunities. We have worked at the

Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon, San

Francisco Triathlon at Treasure Island,

Bay to Breakers and the Nike Women’s

Marathon in various roles. We aim to be

the best service provider and thus have

been invited back by every organization

we have worked with.

MORE THAN A CLUB

Eagle Pride is committed to being an

information hub for GWHS. We

maintain our own website filled with the

latest news on GWHS, events, clubs,

sports, PTSA and much more. We have

the largest GWHS Facebook group and a

Facebook fan page.

We invite everyone who has a heart to

serve the school and our community to

join us. We offer three distinct
