Spring Cleaning!! April 13 Join up as Trinity members pitch in with our community to
be a part of the Victorville City Wide Clean Up Day on Saturday,
April 13th from 9:00 to 11:00. We will meet in the parking lot,
get our ‘grabbers,’ gloves, and water before dividing into teams
to clean up our neighborhood. Fill in the waiver at the link below
by April 1st to get a free T-Shirt for your participation. (or easier
to ‘Google’ Victorville Community Clean Up and use the link to
sign up page)
http://www.123formbuilder.com/form-4357883/april-2019-community-cleanupl
But you are welcome to join us on April 13th even if you haven’t signed up ahead of time. This
is a great opportunity to share our Trinity spirit with the surrounding community!
TRINITY CHURCH PICNIC Please mark your calendars... On Sunday, April 28th, Trinity members will gather at Do-ris Davies Park, on Pebble Beach Drive in Victorville, for a church picnic. Hosted by the Ser-vice and Fellowship Teams, the picnic is planned to address all three parts of our Trinity Mis-sion Statement. “Marked with cross of Christ we are called to love, serve, and celebrate Christ, our community, and one another”. Current plans call for conducting the 8:15 worship service at Trinity, after which folks will gather at the park. The second service will take place there at 10:30. After the service, we will eat lunch, enjoy fellowship with each other, and participate in games or other activi-ties. We won’t be doing trash pick-up this year; another service project is in the planning stages. Last year’s picnic was a great success. The weather was perfect for a Sunday service on the grass. Please stay tuned for more information as plans are finalized, for food items you might be invited to provide, as well as directions to the park.

“Who Is My Neighbor?” VBS VBS planning is off and running, but don’t worry if
you missed the first meeting, we have another one
around the corner on Monday, April 8th at 6:00pm. Our
theme this year is “Who Is My Neighbor?” and is sched-
uled for June 17-21.
Jesus makes clear that “neighbor” is a radically
new relationship made possible by God’s reconciling
grace. To be a neighbor is to be in relationship with the
people God places in our midst, to both serve and be
served by them. Participants will explore what this
means by learning about neighbors in six parts of the
globe over the five days.
If you would like to volunteer, please complete the
volunteer form on the shelf in the entryway and place it
Rebecca Wehrle’s box in the conference room; or talk
with Rebecca Wehrle, Solveig McArthur, or Larry Dunn
for more information. Take a look at the general areas of VBS below and let us know 2-3 in
which you would be interested in serving!
In faith, we are invited to walk with, work with and learn from one another in love, ap-
preciating all the gifts our neighbors share with us and all the gifts we can share with them.
We hope you’ll share your gifts at VBS this year!
Registration: Receive registration forms from attendees, form groups, and coordinate check-
in each day of VBS.
Decorations: Oversee the effort to create a festive atmosphere to go with this year’s theme.
Opening/Music: Assist Becky Anderson in choreographing and leading music each day, or
work with Pastor Matt to put together skits.
Crafts: Plan, prepare, and lead crafts each day, securing or providing list of needed supplies.
Snack: Plan, prepare, and distribute snack each day, ensuring special dietary needs are met.
Games: Choose and prepare games for each day, securing or providing list of needed items.
Mission Project: Tell the kids about neighbors in a different part of the world each day, teach-
ing them how their offerings will help others.
Nursery: Assist Miss Debbie in leading a group of preschoolers in experiencing the different
activities “around the neighborhood” of VBS!
Group/Family Leaders: Help lead a group of awesome kids from station to station at VBS,
and lead them during “family time.”

Last year’s Craffle raised significant funds to send kids to camp, so now is the time
for Trinity families to look at the camp schedule to see when they might want to go! The op-
portunities and schedule are available at LRCC’s brand new website at LRCChome.com.
Click on the “Summer” tab to see all the ways to go to camp, from the mountains of El
Camino Pines to the farm at Luther Glen to the beach in San Diego! Choose what best suits
your child and family, and then talk to Pastor Matt before or after you sign up in order to ob-
tain the scholarship funds.
LRCC provides sanctuaries in time and space where Christ can be encountered, faith
renewed and the joy of community discovered. The Lutheran outdoor ministry supplements
congregational recreational outdoor ministry and camping for all ages and offers refreshing,
faith-enriching retreat experiences by creating dynamic Christian community, rewarding edu-
cational opportunities and outdoor relaxation from the routine and hectic pace of life.
This summer, the theme will be 'Heroes of Faith,' an exploration into the women and
men in the Bible who were models of courage, faith and love! The theme verse is Joshua
1:9 , "This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For
the Lord, your God is with you wherever you go.” We're calling all current and future Heroes
of Faith... come to camp this summer!
Camp Scholarships Available!

Women’s Bible Studies The Women’s bible study groups meeting in Silver Lakes on the second Wednesday at
1:00 in the home of Judy Gusdal and at Trinity at 1:30 pm on the third Thursday will be con-
cluding our study of The Gospel of John.
In April: Through our study, we encounter the risen Christ through His appearances to
Mary Magdalene, Peter, the Beloved Disciple, and Thomas. We reflect on how the risen Christ
remains present among us, blessing us and inviting us to come and see Him and to live in His
name.
All women are welcome to attend - bring a friend - for fellowship and Bible study.
Men’s Breakfast Meets on 3rd Saturday Men’s Breakfast continues to meet in Trinity’s Fellowship Hall at 7:30 a.m. on the third
Saturday of the month. For April, that means you should mark your calendar for April 20!
We’ve recently begun reading through the book of Acts together, following a delicious break-
fast cooked by Pastor Matt and friends. Hope you can join us!
Tuesday Bible Study: Isaiah with Pastor Matt This year’s study of the earliest Hebrew prophets has taken us into the first half of the
book of Isaiah. There are so many connection in this dynamic book both to our culture today
and to our Christian faith. Come discover God’s Word with us! Meets at 10:00 a.m. each Tues-
day.

Share an initiation to worship
Hey! Members of the Evangelism ministry team! Yes, that’s all of us, sharing the love of Jesus, the joy of worship, and the warm embrace of our Trinity Church family. Last month’s article in this series shared research findings: Nearly 70 percent of Americans said an invitation to worship from a friend or family member would be effective in getting them to visit a church (Source: Christianity Today) The weeks ahead are such a meaningful time of the church year and offer many op-portunities for invitations. Bring someone to enjoy Lenten Soup Supper and the moving Holden Evening Prayer service on Wednesday evenings. Do clip the invitations below, carry them in your wallet, and make it a goal to hand them out. Share with someone you know or happen to meet. Don’t be shy or hesitant, invite someone to worship, all you evangelists!

A Note from the Stewardship Team
This past Sunday, March 17, our offering prayer was the following:
Generous God, You feed us with the harvest of the land, and You provide for our every
need. Receive our gifts of money, imagination, and labour and transform them into a
feast that welcomes all, in Jesus Christ, our host and our guest.
We can take these commitments our Lord makes to us and the requests we make
of our Lord and translate them to our daily lives as Christians and members of the Trinity
Family. We can use our gifts to make Trinity a welcoming and generous place for all.
And, in fact, that’s what we’ve been doing with the Needs Assessment we’ve been
going through. We’ve come together as a Faith Family to determine how to best move
forward in providing a facility that will better meet the needs of our Trinity Family and of
the larger community. The next steps are to 1) propose solutions to the problems we’ve
identified, (imagination) 2) determine which solutions are practical and affordable, and
3) put our combined money and labour into making them reality. So, let’s work together
and put our time, talents, and money into making Trinity the best it can be.

April 2019 MARKED WITH THE CROSS OF CHRIST, WE LOVE, CELEBRATE AND SERVE TRINITY TIDINGS 12
What is to be done? Our congregations are growing older and smaller. At least 40 percent of our congregations have an average weekly worship attendance of 50 or less. ELCA membership decreases by 70,000 people a year, or roughly the loss of a synod per year. Clergy retirements outnumber new candi-dates for ministry. Financial pressures and building maintenance create stress. There is a dearth of people in their 20s and 30s in our pews. How do we change this? How do we reverse the trends?
These are anxious questions that come from anxious people across this church. We aren’t the only ones ask-ing them—just about every mainline denomination, including the non-Latino population of the Roman Catho-lic Church, is in the same boat. Even some megachurches are showing signs of plateau or decline. And this is not exclusive to the Christian community. I once attended a national conference of Muslims where one workshop was titled “Un-Mosqued to Mosqued: How to Get the Young Muslim Back to the Masjid.”
Some now see the decline of the church in general, and the ELCA in particular, as inevitable. The response can be to turn our churches into bunkers with our congregations sheltering within the walls or to try every new program that breathlessly promises to attract people to our congregations. Neither is an effective or faithful long-term strategy.
I think we are asking the wrong questions.
The questions we are asking have to do about us: “What can we do?” They express loss and grief and fear—loss and grief for what we were and fear about what we will become. Not only do these questions not lead to productive answers, they also don’t point to hope. It’s as if the church’s one foundation rests on us and our efforts.
I think we need to ask: “What is God up to?”
It’s clear to me that we are living in a time of transition, especially for the Western church. I don’t know how long this transition will last nor do I have a clear vision of what the church is becoming.
The good news is that you and I don’t have to have a clear vision because God does. “Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” (Isaiah 43:18-19). These words of hope were spoken to the Jews who were stuck in exile. They had lost their land, their temple and their king—the pillars of their identity. Likewise, the church has lost social status and relevance in 21st-century American culture.
For Israel and the church this would be a hopeless situation, except that God is faithful. When the Lord ad-monished, “Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old,” this wasn’t a command to for-get God’s past saving work, but to believe that God was still acting. This is true for us today. When we stop asking what we can do to fix the church and start asking what God is up to, we open ourselves up to the life-giving promise of God’s future.
Then we are also open to more questions: How is the Spirit reshaping the church? How will Christ use us as Christ’s living body in the world?
If we want to attract people to our congregations to rebuild a memory, God will not bless our efforts. But if we—grabbed by the Spirit in baptism, changed by the word, intimately and lovingly connected to Jesus and each other in communion, and set free by grace to serve the neighbor—invite all people into true life, then we shall become part of the answer.
This takes attention and devotion. Worship, prayer, Scripture study, generosity and service—not in order to save the church, but in response to the new life God has given us in Christ.
Bishop Eaton

Quilts and Care Kits
Reach Families in Georgia
In 2018 alone, more than 47,500 LWR Mission Quilts, Personal Care Kits, School Kits and Baby Care Kits reached families in the country of Georgia. Families here struggle with high levels of unemployment and have endured periods of violent conflict since the country established independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Your gifts are welcomed comfort to families living in poverty, including those who have had to flee from their homes and reestablish their lives elsewhere in the country due to past conflict between Georgia and Russia. Our partner, the Union of Investments in Humanitarian Projects — knowns as UHIP — distributes the quilts and kits in Georgia. They deliver these valuable gifts through soup kitchens, elderly care centers and schools that serve children with special needs. Irakli Saralidze, program manager at UHIP, shared that “Commodities like quilts can be hard to find locally, and all of these people are very poor, so this support really helps them save money to cover their immediate needs.” And knowing every quilt is handmade by caring people thousands of miles away in the U.S. makes the gift even more meaningful. “We are so grateful [for your] collaboration that allows us to reach vulnerable people in Geor-gia,” says Irakli. Thank you for your gifts and love that make this ministry possible!
