Granby AKA: Lee 423 Granby St 1915-1987 1,188 seats Owners: 1920 Wells Amusements 1930 Wilmer & Vincent & Loew’s partnership Early records are sketchy, but indicate that the original Granby Theatre opened in 1915 where the Federal Building is today. It moved down the street in 1923, to the 400 block. In 1967, the Granby was purchased by Fabian Theatres, who renamed it the Lee Theatre after a renovation. Adult films were playing by the time Phil and Louis Bress bought the theatre in 1976. The Bresses renamed it the Granby Mall Cinema and the theatre was a short-lived success playing family fare until the owners retired and locked the doors in 1987. Around 1990, Richard Levin purchased the theatre. He had no intention of restoring it, just preventing its destruction. In 2000, the building was repainted, which made the exterior look much more attractive. And, finally, in 2002, developer Bobby Wright paid $600,000 for the building and had it converted into a popular nightspot.

State AKA: Loew’s State 340 Granby 1926-1978 2,114 seats From Calab Cramer: Loew’s owned this theatre. It is now an concert hall called the Roper Performing Arts Center Was the Loew’s flagship theater in the Norfolk area, opened in 1926 as a silent film theater with vaudeville acts. Had a live orchestra, organ, etc. Architect was the renowned Thomas Lamb and, although somewhat less ornate than his most elaborate theaters, was still a magnificent theater with excellent acoustics and breath-taking decor. After many illustrious years as a first run downtown theater, the theater was reduced to running exploitation films in its final years and closed in the late 1970s in a somewhat deteriorated condition. It reopened briefly as a live concert venue in the early 1980s but closed and fell into further disrepair for some 15 years. The building was acquired by Tidewater Community College and restored/renovated. The grand 2,200 seat auditorium (actual figures on seating varies slightly) was reduced to approximately 900 seats, with the rear portion of the theater walled off and converted into classrooms. The stage was completely overhauled and modernized with state of the art lighting and sound, seats completely restored, ornate chandeliers restored and rewired, the box seating areas restored, all plaster décor restored from the ceiling down to the floor in an attempt to preserve the unique movie palace atmosphere. Massive paintings of Spanish figures on either side of the theater walls were still awaiting restoration in a race against time.

Plays first run films, serves meals, and is something of an area institution. People are known to line up for hours in advance of the box office opening to buy tickets for must-see films (tickets are not available online, nor sold before the day of show). Was the area’s destination theater for the reissue of the special edition Star Wars Trilogy in the late 1990s, played Titanic for 6 months straight

HENRICO COUNTY Broadway Open Air Hungary Spring Road & W. Broad 1947-1973 550 cars

The Broadway open air theater was not a Negro theater. It was a drive-in located on US 250 W (Broad Street Road) at Hungary Spring Road. Technically it was in Henrico County and not the city of Richmond proper.

It opened in 1947 and closed in 1973. I am unaware of any other theater with the name Broadway in the Richmond area.

It was torn down to build an indoor ice skating rink. Less than ten years later, the rink was torn down to build a completely unremarkable strip retail center. – Thanks to Randy Sweeney
