The reed, thebreast, the ‘creepyuncle’IT is almost that time of the year again when youngwomen congregate at the royal palace in Nongomain an ageold custom of presenting reeds and themselves to King Goodwill Zwelithini.
We are told that it was once a beautiful traditionthat entailed participation by female virgins whowere proud of their wholesome ways. They deemedit an honour to acknowledge their chastity.
Today it may be safer to simply call the participants… participants.
Male virgins are not treated with quite the samecelebratory attitude, but that is a subject for anothercolumn.
The tradition was revived 24 years ago by the KZNmonarch, toinstillprideinyoungvirgins, toencouragethem to retain their purity in a world where traditional morals have been watered down.
ForZulusandSwazis, theoccasionisalsoachancefor the king to select a new wife, or participant.
When the custom was reintroduced in the earlynineties, I remember that on average, the maidenslooked a lot older than those of today. In today’s ceremonies, it is not frowned upon to see 10yearold girlsparticipating in the festival in the name of culture.
This is where the culture divide gets a little fuzzy.BecauseofthekindofworkIdo,Ioftenfindmyself
at corporate and government events where semiclothed schoolgirls form part of the festivities, ostensibly to provide an African authenticity.
As the father of a 12yearold girl, I almost alwaysfind myself shuddering at these functions when I seethe reactions to the parading of maidens camerasare whipped out, Tablets are placed on record andphotos of semiclothed young girls are able to be sentaround the world at the click of a button.
Somewhere in the audience, there is also boundto be one of those “creepy uncle” types tryingdesperately not to lick his lips.
In slightly altered circumstances (that is, withoutcultural “practice” providing rationale), men andwomen photographing semiclothed children wouldbe imprisoned.
This brings me to the parents who sign the obligatory disclaimers allowing their daughters to undress, jump onto a stage and dance.
What are they thinking? Are they thinking? If a pole and strobe light were added to the props,
would parents still be happy for their 15yearolds toparticipate?
The reed dance is usually preceded by virginitytesting, meaning that if you want to dance for theking, it has to be proven that you are fit to do so which in this case means you need to be a virgin togyrate in front of him.
There have been well documented calls in thepast and indeed some groups make calls every year to ban virginity testing.
Stalwarts within the Zulu nation tell us that thisis a direct attack on Zulu culture.
I disagree.Being born in Richards Bay, I am a Zulu posterboy,
but the practice does not sit well with me.To have a virginity tester don a glove and digitally
penetrate your ladybits so she can confirm yourhymen is intact is ludicrous, particularly because doctors tell us that the hymen does not need sexual penetration to rupture.
A virginity test will, in essence, condition youngwomen into believing that there will always be andshould be someone who has more say over theirbodies than they do.
There is no doubt that the reed dance is good fortourism, what with the spike in all of those unaccompanied male tourists making their way from Europeat this time of year.
Thankfully, a ban on any kind of photography, unless it is from accredited and verified journalists, will reduce the number of photos of bare breastedchildren on the internet, but there are still the creepyuncletypes who go to the festival.
Cultural preservation should be celebrated butit must also take into account social change and thefact that it can be easily exploited by theunscrupulous.
Would it be culturally devastating for our youngwomen to cover their breasts to avoid falling victimto some opportunistic pervert, whether he comes inthe form of a businessman or royalty?
I don’t think so.

A ‘restless’ artist
NEW to the Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg is Thami Jali: Restless Spirit, a soloexhibition of remarkable etchings and silk
screens on paper.“It is an important exhibition, not simply because
it shows off a major artist who just happens to be fromDurban,” says curator Jenny Stretton.
“Thami Jali’s story is so much about South Africa’srecent past: the fractured nation, its diverse cultures, seemingly endless journeys and the hunger for an authentic artistic home.
“This is why the exhibition is a must see Jali’s life
and work speaks of the pain and triumph of South Africainawaythatis outsideofthepoliticalporridgeoftendished up as art and struggle.
“His work is intensely human and direct, whilemaintaining a complex intellectual underpinning. There’s nothing you can tell this artist about the coldreality of the street, but he renders work about thesegrimrealitiesinawaythatisoptimistic and emotionally balanced
“The work is beautiful — it buzzes in a way that
marks it as current, contemporary, demanding theviewer’s attention. “Much has been written of Jali’sobsession with structures: the artist returns time andtime again to buildings, ruins, old shipping containersthrough which the artist peers, against which hecrouches and to which he points in rage or sorrow.
“The constructions are never obvious metaphorsbut lead us inevitably to consider the structures we’vebeen part of for most of our lives as South Africans.”
Stretton said the exhibition chronicles the interest
ing life of a local boy who made good, while detailingthe people in the art community who both helped toform Jali as an artist and who fell under his influence.
“His search for an aesthetic he could truly call hisown took him from Durban’s Clermont township toZululand, Nelspruit, Rorke’s Drift, Johannesburg,London, New Delhi and finally back to Durban to thehouse he grew up in,” Stretton said.
“Called a renaissance man by those who havewatched his career, Jali is multitalented, equally athome behind the wheel or at a canvas.
“But it’s the way this artist has interrogated SouthAfrican society that informs his vision. He’s been avoice of the man in the street, eschewed popular politics for artistic integrity, and given back to his studentsfar more than he ever took.”
Thami Jali: Restless Spirit can be viewed until September 27. Jali will be running four Saturday morningworkshops during the exhibition run. For more information, email [email protected] [email protected].

BAFANA Bafana head coachEphraim “Shakes” Mashabasays he would rather take
a riskbyusing youngsters in order tobuild for the future instead of usingold, tired and tested players.
Tomorrow, Bafana Bafana willplay against the lowly ranked Sudanand then travel back to South Africatoplayagainst theAfricangiantsandnumber one ranked Nigeria nextWednesday in Cape Town.
The question that has been askedby local soccer pundits and experts
is whether Mashaba’s “Ben 10s XI”will be able to hold up against theexperienced African campaigners.
Mashaba says he is not worriedabout the age of his players becausehe is looking at the bigger picture.
“If we don’t allow theseyoungsters to come on board earlyand feel what it’s like to play for thesenior team, our future ordevelopment is doomed.
“Yes, we want to win too, but wealso want to take care of thedevelopment of our young players.
By recruiting them now or byintroducing them to the senior set-up, it is investing for the future,” saidMashaba.
Mashabaalso believes that his in-clusion of the young players willbring back the pride of Mzansi foot-ball.
Mashaba pleaded with his seniorteam to “build on the efforts of theyoungsters.”
“I am asking the senior players totake this positive vibe forward.”
