Why have we started?● We feel concern for the educated society● We go for competitive Lithuania in EU and the

whole world● Encourage Internet usage – encourage the

development of the economy● We want to decrease the growing digital divide in

the society● We seek for mutual cooperation between

business, governmental and other institutions encouraging society to use IT

Window to the Future is a Society modernization initiative launched by private companies and focused on the promotion of the Internet usage in Lithuania

Mission

To promote the use of internet in Lithuania and in

this way stimulate the growth of the standard of

living, as well as Lithuania’s competetive ability

among European and World countries.

Business alliance Window to the Future to support Knowledge Society development (2002 May)

Lithuanian Government Joined the Alliance

Cooperation agreement with the Ministry of Interior to increase the number of W2F public internet access points

Agreement with the Ministry of Education on cooperation in organizing large-scale internet trainings.

It is only co-ordinated efforts of business and the government

that can create a synergy effect,

which will help to change the

situation substantially.

In 3 years 175 Public Internet Access Points are opened

What is a “Langas į ateitį” PIAP?● 2-3-4 PCs with Internet access located in local government offices,

libraries,community centers,museums, hospitals, post offices, sale points SIMAS

● The PIAP provides free Internet access to the visitors● The PIAP is likely to be a key institution for the local rural

community● The PIAP (and/or local government) is responsible for the

expenses to run the PIAP (premises, part of an Internet monthly fee, staff)

● Main activities: Information search,e mail for communication,PIAP is used for local community purposes (OSF, EU projects); computer literacy courses; LIBIS – library info search; games

3 stages of PIAP development

Integrating private, state and EU Funds it is foreseen to establish a net of nearly 1000 PIAPs in the nearest 2 years

Public e.services were exposed by the Min of Internal affairs and Information Society development Committee together with the PIAP projects -
