Edinburgh College Character... through Nurture, Learning and Service

T3—Week 1 July 17 2019

For the last five years Prep teacher, Miss Brown, has used the winter holidays to lead a team of young people on a service trip to Camperdown. STORMCo, Service to Others Really Matters Company, chooses a regional town to run a holiday Kids Club and to engage in various community service activities. This year’s Kids Club attracted between up to 55 primary aged kids each day. This year Miss Brown led a team of 20 which included staff member, Miss Trish Shorney. Miss Shorney led out in the Storm Youth, a Secondary student leader-ship program, mentoring and nurturing them as they helped with the Kids Club program.

The community projects included a Woolworths supported “Pay it Forward” project where the team handed out free hot chocolates and chocolate treats to the community. Giving the local Anglican church hall a thorough clean, singing, giving gifts and sharing time with the residents of a low and high care facility was also very much appreciated.

Edinburgh Staff Serve Others Three staff members spent their well earned holiday break to serve others. Miss Edna Sao, Secondary teacher, joined a group of 20 young people from around Australia who travelled to the Philippine island of Iloilo. The group project, Share Him, is all about encouraging and equipping young people to share their faith and God’s love with others. Miss Sao was assigned one of 20 church communities and each night for nine days she shared the message of God’s love with those who attended. Miss Sao said each member of the team was welcomed with kindness and friendliness. They enjoyed a variety of wonderful food and the lovely warmth of the tropics. Between the 20 church communities, 124 people committed their lives to God through baptism and many more requested to have Bible studies with their local church.

Staff Student Game

Report from Mr Brooks

The teachers beat the students - just! This was a close and exciting game, with some excellent basketball from both students and staff. Some students would like to play the staff again when our star practice teacher Mr Shaw is no longer at the College - staff are certainly glad for the timing of his visit. Teachers were in front by a couple of points, with some cunning outside shooting and by dominating the rebounding. But Martin Jones then hit a big three to make it a super close game in the last few seconds. The crowd was very much in the game at this point. Teachers fumbled, but Mr Shaw scored, and phew, it was over, teachers out of jail. This definitely deserves a rematch at some time.

Lunchtime Competition Grand Final Term 2 Grand Final—Team Cooper upset the top ranked team to earn a place against the favourite, Team Balaz. The bad news was the captain’s Achilles heel; Cooper was off basketball for a couple of weeks. The teamwork took some time to adjust, the 3 pointers weren’t dropping and tall Team Balaz just kept rolling along. They ended up winning by half a dozen points with Keenan French taking home the Finals MVP for his tidy and tough work around the basket. League Commissioner, Tom Gladwin, presided at the awards ceremony. He has run an excellent competition and shown tremendous organisational skills.

Staff Professional Development Do you ever wish you could repeat a day or a year again so that you could do things differently? On Monday the staff met for a combined PD focused on Brain Science. Mrs Karen Ferry, a child psychologist specialising in trauma, presented how a child’s brain develops and the effects on their brain under certain parenting or teaching styles. After 4 hours, I was willing to go back in time to do ‘life’ again. Unfortunately this is not possible but what I can do is to always remember that every word spoken has some sort of effect on each person’s listening. Our words need to reflect God’s love in all circumstances. - Mrs Pascoe

Year 12 Tour Yakult Mr Kane and the Year 12 Business Studies students visited the Yakult Factory Corporate campus in Dandenong South last term. Yakult manufactures probiotic drinks and distributes throughout Australia and New Zealand from a single site in Dandenong. Students visited the plant to consolidate learning about operations management within a thriving global business. Students heard from tour guide, Ms Tan, who spoke about concepts discussed in class and gave a tour of the plant to show how Yakult successfully applies operations management processes.

Student Baptism Congratulations to Year 12 student, Jessica Phillips, who committed her life to Jesus in front of friends and family at Warburton Seventh-day Adventist Church last Saturday.

Spending Time with the Elderly Year 5 joined their buddies from the ELC Purple Room to visit an aged care centre in Lilydale. Together they sang songs and presented their elderly friends with gifts. The Year 5 and ELC buddies went on to spend an afternoon sharing hot chips and playing together at Lillydale Lake Park.

Colonial Australia Experiencing what life as a ship hand in Australia’s past was like is something Year 4 students will remember for a long time.

Student highlights included turning the big ships wheel, being in the grand captain’s cabin, learning about the life of a convict sailing out to Australia and looking at photos and reading diaries in the museum.

Service Projects Year 11 are organising two service projects to help oth-ers in need. The first project is for women who have had to leave their homes due to violence and abuse and have been housed in a women’s refuge. Toiletries and winter clothing are always needed to pass on to women who often arrive at the refuge without anything. The second project is for summer clothing for 140 orphans in Nepal. If you have clothing suitable for children between 5 and 15 years of age, they would really appreciate it. Please pass all your donations on to Mrs Sawicki, the Primary office or any Year 11 student.
