I think the heading on the front page pretty much sums up my life at the moment – it is definitely beginning to

feel like Christmas with so much festive activity going on – in my world it is very hard to ignore it.

As I walk into our office in the morning I am surrounded by what could be described as a tsunami of decorations – every flat surface features some kind of decoration, tinsel, ornament, flashing light even our lolly jar is shaped as a pair of Santa’s pants! Then when I leave at night (when it is dark) I enter some type of crazy fairy light frenzy on our verandah and no matter how late I leave, they are still on. Being a little bit green – we of course only have solar fairy lights.

Luckily I am one of those Christmas tragics that loves baubles, sequins, diamantes, and pretty much anything that sparkles – and I don’t think you can ever have too much novelty Christmas headwear. And I know I am not alone – as I have been absolutely amazed at some of this year’s entries in ‘Lighting Up Glasshouse Country’.There is a list of properties that have entered on page 7, the judges will be making secret visits to these properties during the week and we will have the winner announced in the next edition.Have to finish now – have got to go and change the Christmas CD before I have Christmas Carol withdrawal systems.

Welcome to (most of) the Sunshine CoastLast week, Local Government Minister David Crisafulli granted former Noosa Shire residents their chance at undoing the much debated 2008 forced amalgamation with Maroochy Shire and Caloundra City.He announced that the residents in the former council area will vote at a compulsory referendum in March 2013 to decide their fate.Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson said the decision to grant a de-amalgamation vote to the people of Noosa is an important one.“The result will not only affect the people of Noosa – but all residents of the Sunshine Coast,” Mayor Jamieson said.“I think it’s important for the people who get to vote – and those who don’t – to understand exactly what the costs are, and how they will be affected.“I am worried about some of the concerns identified by the Boundary Commissioner, in particular:•Thequestionsaboutthefinancialsustainability of both councils – the report says one strong council would be turned into two weaker councils•Thequestionsraisedabouttheabilityto deliver key regional projects such as the airport expansion, and development of Maroochydore CBD•Thedetrimentaleffectoflevelsofserviceon tourism

•Thereducedcapacityofcounciltocontributeto the economic development of this area“I was elected as the Mayor of the whole Sunshine Coast, including Noosa and I will continue to represent the whole region to the best of my ability.“Council’s position has been clear on de-amalgamation – it would prefer it to stay as one united council for one united region.”Councillor Jenny McKay prefers that the united Sunshine Coast remains as it is.“I am strongly of the opinion that a decision to de-amalgamate is not in the best interests of the region as a whole,” Cr McKay said.“I hope that every person who is to vote in the referendum reads carefully the report published by Queensland Boundaries Commissioner, as the consequencesofde-amalgamation,asoutlinedinthe report, will have serious repercussions for the viability of the region as a whole.”Councillor Rick Baberowski also believes the region is a stronger entity as a whole.“The region is much stronger by maintaining a unified presence, as opposed to the pain and cost associated with the de-amalgamation,” Cr Baberowski said.“Why not take advantage of the economies and strengths associated with being one regional voice.“I hope that before people vote, they think seriously about both sides of the argument, and not just get caught up in the de-amalgamation side.”

Gowinta farms goes into liquidationLocal businesses who deal with Gowinta Farms were notified recently that the troubled company has been placed into liquidation. In May this year, the business went into external administration, with a Deed of Company Arrangement being agreed upon between the creditors and the administrators – Rodgers Reidy Chartered Accountants.

However, according to correspondence from Rogers Reidy, due to a number of factors, the company will not be able to meet its current or future obligations.

These factors include adverse weather and poor strawberry prices, lower forecast trading results, lower forecast cashflow, a non-payment from a major customer, and not being able to source further external finance.

‘In light of the above matters and pursuant to clause 16.1(a) of the DOCA, a declaration is hereby made to terminate the DOCA and place the Company into liquidation, with immediate effect, as at 25 October 2012’, states a memo from Rodgers Reidy to local suppliers.

Questions about the future operations and plans for liquidating the company and selling assets were put to Rodgers Reidy, however no responses were received by the time the paper went to print.

A creditors meeting was held at the farm where the liquidator laid out the path for the business.

It is understood that the liquidator is to run the business for another season, with strawberry runner supplier Driscoll’s supporting the venture. However, marketing agents Colliers International have listed, individually or collectively, the properties which make up Gowinta farms, through an expression of interest closing December 18.At the time that the company entered the external administration arrangement, Rodgers and Reidy estimated that the DOCA course of action would see 22 cents in the dollar being returned to unsecured creditors.Depressingly, their estimation of the return from a liquidation scenario was far worse – with nil cents in the dollar being predicted. However, one certainty is that Rodgers and Reidy will be paid their fees from any monies raised through the liquidation.By their own estimates from a report to the creditors (dated July 9, 2012), their total remuneration may end up being close to the $1 million mark.

Great news for the Mooloolah and surrounding communities with the state school pool open for public access through the coming summer break.Due to some confusion within the community, the Mooloolah Valley Community Association called a meeting last week to ascertain what is currently happening with the Mooloolah swimming pool.Historically an agreement existed with Education Queensland and Sunshine Coast Council. This agreement has recently expired and the ball is now in the court of Education Queensland as to whether they will continue to allow community access into the future.Council and Education Queensland met back in July, with Mr Greg Peach, Regional Director for the North Coast Region of Education Queensland asking Council to put their request in writing.Councillor Jenny McKay says that, to date, no response has been received by Council and so it is unsure what Education Queensland’s position is on the matter.“Council has been trying to get a response from Education Queensland for months so that this issue can be resolved and the community can continue to enjoy the pool facility outside of school hours,” Cr McKay said.“I’ve written to Mr Peach myself to ask for some indication as to what their intentions are, but have yet to receive a response. I’ve also written to Mark McArdle asking for his assistance.”

Mooloolah Principal Michelle Brown with Cr Jenny McKay

Mooloolah Pool Open By Greg Brown

Mr Mark McArdle MP says his office has made contact with the Education Minister and says that the matter is in progress.“My office has spoken to the office of the Minister for Education Mr Paul Langbroek and has been told that we will have further information on the status of the agreement between Education QLD and the Sunshine Coast Regional Council early next week,” Said Mr McArdle.Meanwhile, Council has arranged to continue to provide access to the pool for public use outside of school hours until March 2013 whilst awaiting a decision on the future arrangement.“Council will support community access for the pool and will assist in seeking a suitable lessee to operate the pool in the future. Access to the pool could then be negotiated between the lessee and Education Queensland with both parties taking into consideration the needs of the community, said Cr McKay.

The four Patrol Rangers (photo by Ben Beaden/Australia Zoo)

Conservation cultural exchange benefits wild tigersTiger protectors come face to face with live tigers for the first time when a group of men who spend their lives protecting one of the last remaining wild populations of Sumatran tigers have embarked on a trip of a lifetime. Thanks to a long-running partnership between Australia Zoo and conservation organisation Fauna &Flora International, a conservation cultural exchange has seen four Indonesian tiger protectors travel out of Sumatra for the first time ever - only to find themselves land on the Sunshine Coast!Australia Zoo is one of Fauna & Flora International (FFI’s) biggest Australian supporters. The relationship now spans close to a decade and has had a hugely positive effect on what FFI has been able to achieve on the ground. The exchange program was a concept of the Australia Zoo tiger department as a way of increasing awareness and understanding for the staff who work tirelessly to fundraise for FFI’s tiger program, and for the patrol teams who live for months on end in the forests of Indonesia.

“The work FFI and their team leader Debbie Martyr do in Sumatra is nothing short of remarkable. The teams literally put their lives on the line, every single day, to save this species from extinction,” said Giles Clark, Australia Zoo International Conservation Manager and tiger supervisor.

Three teams of tiger handlers from Australia Zoo travelled to Sumatra earlier this year to spend some time patrolling and getting a feel for what their Indonesian colleagues face on a daily basis. Every one of them returned with a renewed respect for their dedication.Australia Zoo tiger handler Mark Turner said, “I have a new-found admiration for the work these guys do - this was an invaluable experience and has given me a better understanding of the program we support.”FFI’s patrol teams work closely with the national park staff, the forestry department, police and local communities. Tiger poaching is now a very risky business. Not only are poachers being arrested, but the teams are also having a big impact on stopping poaching activities, getting there before the poachers can strike.

What about Peachester, Glenview and Palmview? In previous editions, we’ve covered the specific sections the draft planning strategy has for Beerburrum, Glass House Mountains, Beerwah, Landsborough and Mooloolah. Unfortunately, the localities of Peachester, Glenview and Palmview (except for the massive new development attached to Sippy Downs) don’t have any specific planning chapters covering them.

They are covered by locality maps showing the land zonings. Comparing them with the 2004 Caloundra City Plan, not much has really changed – it seems that nothing extra has been planned, nothing new added, no real progress is envisaged.

To view these maps from the current draft planning scheme head to the ‘Hot Off The Press’ section of our website www.gcnews.com.au.

It’s not too late to have your say.

Submissions on the draft strategic plan close at 4.30pm on Friday December 14. It’s important that you make a properly made submission – either written, emailed or via the Council website. To find out how to make a properly made submission, check out the Council website or call them on 5475 7272.

Rod Butler and John Innes accompanied them. After presents were handed out, they were happy to pose for a photo. Members were treated to speeches of thanks and also songs and music from three residents.John Innes took pleasure in presenting Terry with a cheque amounting to $434.00 raised by a raffle held in conjunction with the recent street stall and Mooloolah Markets. In thanking all those concerned, Terry explained that the previous donation had been spent towards vinyl for the dining room floor, and that this one will go towards televisions for resident’s rooms.

Lutheran Women of Calvary Glass House Mountains kept busy during the winter with their knit-a-thon. The ladies embraced the task of making quilts for residential aged care homes in the Glasshouse hinterland.

They were encouraged to undertake the project by the Lutheran Women of Australia – a vision of quilts being made from scraps of wool etc by Lutheran women throughout the length and breadth of Australia, as a tangible expression of service to those in need.

Our research into the coaching days often turns up humorous anecdotes. Like the trip from Gympie in 1872 by nine-year-old Robert Pollock,

who was travelling to Brisbane to complete his schooling at the Brisbane Grammar School.According to young Robert the road to Brisbane was so bad there were frequent breakdowns, although he thought it remarkable how quickly things were repaired. At times he travelled at the back of the coach on top of the luggage and thought it great fun. The mishaps on the road were a big adventure, especially crossing flooded creeks and fixing the broken leather coach braces (suspension before springs). Public liability and third party insurance were not a problem in those days.Passengers who caught a Cobb and Co coach between Brisbane and Gympie in the late 1800s and stopped at Bankfoot House for lunch were expected to obey the rules. These included:*gentlemen guilty of unruly behaviour will be dislodged from the coach and left stranded in the middle of the Never Never.*the driver will allow any passengers who complain of cramped conditions to ‘stretch their legs’, providing they can keep up with the speed of the coach.*should the coach become bogged, gentlemen are required to push. Those who do not may find they contribute to the speed of the journey by lightening the load.

Irene and Tony from the Beerwah Hideaway absolutely have to sell their beautiful, much loved bed and breakfast, due to Irene’s serious health crisis.Time is not on their side and they have been forced to take the property to a second auction to be held on Saturday, December 16 at 12.000noon.Being desperate to sell the property they know it is a real opportunity for someone to grab an absolute bargain. They would love to see it sold to a local who would appreciate just how gorgeous the property

is, with its three acres of tropical gardens, pool, function room, commercial grade kitchen and stylishly put together bed and breakfast suites to run as a business.Or for someone with a large or extended family it would also make an excellent family home, a perfect place to live in, to be enjoyed and filled with plenty of family fun. Also plenty of room for a granny flat.If you are interested in running it as a business you could do as much or as little as you like, just run the three suite Bed and Breakfast for a great second income or embrace some of the other

potential in this such as wedding functions, wine tasting café or cooking school. To find more check out this link on ‘You Tube’ [1233steveirwinwaythehideaway]If you are looking for a major change in your life for 2013 – purchasing this property would be a huge step in a new direction. To make an appointment to inspect the property contact Peter Thompson from Elders real estate, Nambour on 0429 061 444.Don’t miss the opportunity to own your own business. Community NewsMo Bro thanks supportersMember for Caloundra Mark McArdle has raised more than $700.00 for Movember dedicating the month of November to fundraising, while sporting an interesting Mo.The Caloundra MP has thanked everyone for their support after saying goodbye to the Mo on Friday night.Mr McArdle said while it was a challenge to renounce his normally clean-shaven look, he was only too happy to get involved in such a worthy

fundraiser joining thousands of other Mo Bro’s putting the spotlight on men’s health issues.Mr McArdle’s attempt to grow a finely groomed moustache did make some progress over the month.“As you can see from the attached photos it was possibly the worst Movember moustache

ever grown,” Mr McArdle said.“I wasn’t sorry to see the moustache go that’s for sure; I’d been coping quite a bit of flack.“It was all for a great cause though and that’s what made the month worthwhile.’’Mr McArdle said it is extremely important for men to get their prostate checked and to develop social relationships.“Identifying a month is a fantastic way to highlight men’s health issues and I’m so glad I was a part of it,’’ Mr McArdle said. The funds raised from registered Movember participants go towards Beyond Blue, the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, education programs and Movember’s global action plan.

SaaS - Where is it now?Software as a Service (SaaS) is a term that orginated over a decade ago, but was coined for common usage in just the last few years. The idea behind SaaS is to provide software that is used on a subscription basis, rather than a one-off purchase.

Traditionally, one-off software purchases of business software might cost anywhere from $500.00 each (such as Microsoft Windows and Office) to $5,000.00 (such as Adobe Creative Suite of design tools).

Then, a year or so after this initial bulk purchase, you would need to spend almost as much again to upgrade to the latest version and keep up with the times.

SaaS combats this cycle by providing a month-by-month subscription process where you can use the product for as long as you like, and only pay a minimal monthly fee, usually between $5.00 and $50.00 per month depending upon the software.

This methodology not only keeps the fees down to help with cashflow, but also provides the user with the latest software updates on a continual basis, with subscribers having access to new features the instant that they are developed.

The latest research has lead to predictions that SaaS will grow from a $21.21 billion global industry (as of 2011) to over $130 billion in 2020.

What does this mean for you? Not only can you now begin to utilise SaaS to help with your own cashflow but if you have a great idea for a pay-as-you-go service, be it software, a website or a mobile app then you can benefit from this booming industry by getting involved and developing your own SaaS (before your competitors do!)

Download DangerWhether you are downloading an update for a program or a nifty new piece of software, you must proceed with caution. Now that we (most of us) have fast download capabilities there are companies out there that are trying to take advantage of us. For example, if you download Adobe Reader (the PDF file reader) you are ‘encouraged’ to download McAfee internet security along with it. This can cause problems if you already have an internet security program running; it is highly recommended to only have one security program at any time. You can opt out by un-ticking the box – however, this is not obvious. We think it should be the other way around – if you want the extra download you should have to tick the box. With the Java download comes the ‘Ask’ toolbar, which seems to be geared more to helping you spend your money than helping you find what you are looking for!If you are downloading a program to ‘Help Speed up Your Computer’, just be careful what you are actually downloading. Quite often I find that the really obvious ‘Download’ button is actually for something else! Hover your mouse over the ‘Download’ button and your Browser (Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari, or Firefox etc.) should display the true download link at the bottom of the screen. If in doubt, don’t download it. On a final note, when installing these ‘free’ programs, read and follow the install prompts carefully. This will help you avoid accidentally installing other unwanted extra programs or browser toolbars, all of which may eventually grind your PC to a halt.Remember, Mooloolah Computers is not a shop in town, but a mobile service – we come to you or if necessary, we can bring your computer back to our home-based workshop. The chamber’s Draft Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme 2012 review team is still scratching our collective heads trying to tie together the variety of thoughts being verbalised by a range of council officers. In 2011 the Glasshouse Country Community was invited to participate in the Place + Beerwah project, as Beerwah is the planned growth centre for the region, the outcome being significant to all of Glasshouse Country. When reflecting on the two Action Plans presented (one for council and one for community) it is not difficult to find more fantasy than achievable outcomes when compared with the draft planning scheme. As I commented in ‘You Said It’ in the GCNews recently it appears that Glasshouse Country has been put on hold for Caloundra South. When the community came together for the Place + discussions, the project identified seven focus themes. The theme of Robust Economy is the one that was considered by those from the business community to bring jobs, generate new business opportunities and attract new residents. The action plan documents were presented to the collective group in March. The draft planning scheme was presented in October, for public consultation. The problem for the community is to be able to produce the outcomes within the framework of the planning scheme, without amendment, this will be difficult. The Place + consultation recommended that the rural community fabric be retained with growth areas developed to encourage new residents. The medium density and high density as proposed will not encourage new residents to come to Glasshouse Country because the communities will no longer have a difference. We have significant options which will support growth and lifestyle; these will be submitted to council for consideration by the chamber and hopefully approval in the planning scheme.By the time this issue of the GCNews is in your hands, the community will have three days to have your submission lodged with council. On another note, you may or may not know the minister for National Parks, Recreation, Sport & Racing, Steven Dickson, is seeking community input into how to grow eco-tourism in national parks. The chamber, in partnership with Hinterland Tourism Sunshine Coast and Sunshine Coast Destinations, is calling for local input. These views collected from the Glasshouse Country Community, assist in formulating the policy for how you would like to see the National Park asset made available to the public while generating new job opportunities. If these facilities were managed and supervised in a better way the local emergency services would not be called out in the rain and dark to put their own safety at risk to rescue unsupervised visitors to our local attractions. The chamber would appreciate your thoughts. Please contribute by email or post.Email: [email protected] or GHCCC PO Box 95, Glass House Mountains, Qld. 4518.

Australia Zoo was recently named Major Tourist Attraction at the 2012 Queensland Tourism Awards for the sixth time. The awards recognise the state’s most popular tourist attractions, events and services, and the Home of the Crocodile Hunter claimed the premier title!Australia Zoo international conservation manager Giles Clark said he was honoured to accept the prestigious award on behalf of Terri, Bindi and Robert Irwin and the crew at Australia Zoo.“Australia Zoo continues to go from strength to strength as we welcome

visitors from all over the world each year,” Giles said. The win comes off the back of an exciting year at the Zoo with the launch of two new television shows, Bindi’s Bootcamp (ABC3) and Steve Irwin’s Wildlife Warriors (Network Ten). Both shows were filmed in and around Australia Zoo and the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital.

You might be surprised to know that Caloundra Wind and Surf is located right here in Landsborough. Owner Peter Nitschke used to operate from premises on the coast but decided it was more practical to operate his business on line and to work from home. And for locals it definitely makes it much easier to pick up any gear they purchase from him. Peter is known to be the first windsurfer sailor in Australia. He started in January 1974 importing the first windsurfers into Australia while living in Tasmania. He later moved to Queensland in 1980 operating windsurfing schools and later opening the shop

in Caloundra. He is an ex-Queensland Wind Surf Champion and was selected for the Olympic trials in 1983. He has won numerous competitions over the years. With this in mind, he is well qualified to advise you on windsurfing, kite surfing and has a background in surfing. He will also select the perfect board for you. Check out the website to see the range which includes a great range of second hand boards www.caloundrawindandsurf.com.au

The team from Café au Lait at Beerwah recently bid a fond farewell to all their loyal customers who had supported them over the last 12 months. While the business had grown since the owners opened the doors of this quirky café they were just not able to make it profitable enough to stay open. It is sad in these tough economic times to see local business people who put plenty of energy and effort into their businesses to not be able to make a success of them. Thanks to Jodie, Deb, Maureen and Alice for bringing plenty of fun and colour to those who entered the cafe's doors.

Hinterland Body and Soul’s, Mother and daughter Shannon and Jen Greenwood are heading off early to celebrate a white Christmas in Canada with family, so their last day will be Friday, December 14.They know that many locals like to indulge their loved ones at Christmas with a spot of pampering and what better way to do that than with a gift voucher. They also know that a lot of locals don’t always get around to buying them until the last minute so they have come up with a solution - Annette from My Travel Treasures (shop next door) will be selling their Gift Vouchers from Saturday, December 15 up to Christmas.

Students took guests on a tour around the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden

Contributed by Katrina DeClaraWow! What a fantastic day we had last Wednesday with the official opening of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden. The day was a culmination of a vision that began over 18 months ago.The aim of the Kitchen Garden Program at Beerburrum is to engage and educate our students in growing, harvesting, preparing and sharing delicious and healthy food in the belief that the skills and understandings our students learn will be essential to the development of life-long healthy eating habits. Each week students from Years 5, 6, and 7 spend one hour getting their hands dirty in an extensive vegetable garden that they have helped design, build and maintain. They learn about plants, about seed saving, about water management, about compost and soil health and

they also learn about the connection between care in the garden and flavour on the plate. This bountiful harvest is prepared in a purpose-built kitchen where students work collaboratively in teams preparing and sharing a variety of meals created from their produce. The day was a celebration of the school’s community journey and acknowledged the fantastic support of staff, students, parents and community members.

Beerwah student’s farewell Miss ReevesAfter 38 years of teaching service Miss Reeves has retired. Her teaching career began in 1974. She has had several appoinments during her career and taught at Beerwah for the last 24 years. The extra-curricula roles that most of the community would remember her for were undertaking Maths and Science programs and activities. Her other areas of expertise benefiting the school community were sport and athletics. When asked for an insight of what her teaching career has meant to her she responded with: “the changes to teaching are enormous. But the one constant has been the enrichment in my daily life from watching children develop their skills through education,” she said.Best wishes Miss Reeves for your retirement from Beerwah State School staff and students.

Where is the baby JesusThe first Christmas card I received this year was from our local member Andrew Powell with artwork from children in the district schools - a lovely idea. After all, children and Christmas sort of go together. All the same, I find it quite sad that not one piece of the contributed Christmas scenes had any reference to the child the festival is named after. The baby Jesus and his family are nowhere to be seen. I do hope that the American trend in removing any trace of the Christ child from the public celebrations can be resisted. So much of our daily life is about the accumulation of stuff and Christmas seems to be about bigger and better stuff these days. All the more reason to be reminded of the humble origin of this season and that God loves us so much that he became one of us. Maybe next year one of the school children will supply Andrew Powell with a real Christmas scene i.e. the Nativity.

Just devastatedOn Tuesday, December 4, my son’s brand new BMX bike was stolen outside Aldi. His father just bought it for him for Christmas. After being retrenched and out of work for months he finally found work and was able to afford to buy his son his first knew BMX bike. It is a Colony Premise 2013 with marbled black/silver frame and red stem and hubs. If anyone has any information or knows of the whereabouts of this bike please leave a message at Glasshouse Country News phone 5438 7445 or Beerwah Police on 5436 5222. ParentingThe Happy Mumwith Jackie HallJackie lives in Landsborough and is

the author of the Happy Mum Handbook

Jackie is also a life coach and operates her self help parenting website www.selfhelpformums.com and can be contacted via email [email protected]

When our children are little and reliant, it's common to feel resentful towards this 'stage' of parenting because we aren't able to do certain things like we used to.However, this period of time is no different to other stages of life we encounter.Sometimes we can't buy something because of the money stage we are in. Sometimes we can't get a job yet because we are still at the study stage of our career and not employable in that area yet. Sometimes we can’t exercise due to an injury or unexpected illness.Try not to catastrophise this parental ‘stage’ of your life by allowing it to define how bad your whole life is.The reality of life is that sometimes we get challenged and things happen that seemingly try to stop you from doing what you want. Rather than focussing so much on these times as interferences to our ‘right’ life (or the way life used to be) and spending loads of energy resenting these times, we can begin seeing them as natural parts of everyone’s lives. We all experience challenges, hardships and unwanted events. These times don’t make life wrong, they make life interesting, they teach us things and they help us to learn and grow. These times push us to resource information on how to think and act and strive in different ways than we used to.The bottom line is, we need to learn to look for the value in these unwanted events. So stop rolling around in how annoying, painful or bad this stage is, start looking at what you want, resource solutions on how to get it, and get planning and scheming your way around this roadblock...or just wait until the stage passes (as every stage inevitably does).

Win haircuts for a yearIf the idea of free haircuts for your family for a year sounds like something you would have on your wish list for Christmas – then you will want to contact local mobile hairdresser Carrie Richards who is currently selling raffle tickets with that as the prize. The raffle fundraiser is for Carrie’s terminally ill mum who really needs an electric scooter to get around.“Mum is mostly house bound now, as it is becoming increasingly difficult for her to breathe and therefore making outings extremely taxing,” said Carrie.“My hope is to get her an electric scooter so she can again enjoy simple outings like an afternoon stroll with her family.”Tickets are $2.00 each, $15.00 for 10 tickets, or $25.00 for 20 tickets which is cheaper than your average haircut. Please ring or text Carrie on 0404 803 650 to arrange payment and delivery of your tickets. Please note the prize offer is valid for the year of 2013 and for immediate family members only (i.e. mum, dad and the kids). The winner must also live within a half hour radius of Glass House Mountains. The amount of haircuts is based on having haircuts every six weeks.

I have an old knee injuryand would like to knowwhat can be done toprevent the situationworsening? Many people carry old injuries that haven’t recovered to be ‘as good as new’ and become areas prone to re injury and ongoing discomfort, despite medical assessment and treatment. In treating chronic injuries it is important to look at causes of ongoing discomfort – e.g. muscle tightness and imbalance resulting from injury. Once the causes of the ongoing discomfort are understood, a course of treatments can be designed, including techniques such as: Dynamic taping of the area to provide support for the joint and to ‘rest’ the joint so it can heal fully. Massaging the surrounding muscles to allow the joint to move more freely (particularly important for knees and shoulder joints). Applying treatment (acupressure etc.) to points known to assist with joint injuries. With appropriate treatment, areas of weakness can often improve significantly resulting in reduced pain and prevention of further injury.

Brendan MayersPhysiotherapistHave you had a clicky jaw, difficulty in opening wide, trouble with grinding yourteeth or clenching? Then you may have a TMJ disorder. You may also experience pain or tenderness in the jaw joint, temples, ears, side of your neck or upper shoulders, as well as headaches behind or around the eyes. The jaw joint or TMJ is formed by the junction of the jaw bone (mandible) and your head (cranium). The joint is then divided by a disc.Stress is another major contributing factor and it is important to understand and avoid stress-related behaviours. You can modify these often subconscious behaviours to prevent or modify jaw pain. Examples of these behaviours are: clenching your teeth, bruxing (nocturnal grinding of teeth), excessive gum chewing, nail biting and pen chewing.I have undergone specialised training in TMJ dysfunction and can diagnose the cause of your jaw symptoms and establish an appropriate treatment plan to resolve the symptoms.

Life is a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood

P: 5435 2013Out and AboutThe Beerburrum School of Arts held their annual Children’s Christmas party last Saturday and I’m pleased to say I had the chance to drop by and wish the community Merry Christmas. Beerburrum is a small but very tight knit community and they were all out in force to celebrate this annual event.During the last week of Parliament for 2012, the Beerburrum State School held the official launch of their Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program. Visitors were treated to a tour of the garden and the kitchen and even got to sample some of the garden produce for morning tea. Alaina from my office attended in my absence and she returned with a glowing report on the students, teachers and volunteers who are tirelessly devoted to this project. She was also particularly pleased with the home made relish and freshly picked tomatoes she purchased from the students to take home. Well done to everyone involved with this program – I realise a lot of work goes into a project like this and you should all be very proud of your efforts and achievements.

Electorate Christmas cardBy now you should have all received my annual Christmas card in your mail boxes. The theme this year was ‘Critters at Christmas’ and I’m sure you will agree that the students did a fantastic job of showing how they think our native animals would celebrate their Christmas. I just wanted to give a little shout out to Roman and Leo De Clara from Beerburrum State School, both of who submitted entries to the competition. Roman actually won second prize and Leo received a Highly Commended award for his work. These amazing kids actually wrote me a letter thanking me for their prize and recognition for their efforts – thanks kids and well done!

Christmas 2012This is my last contribution to the paper for 2012 so I would like to take this opportunity to wish the community a Merry Christmas and all the best for a prosperous start to 2013. My office will be closing at 12.00noon on Friday, December 21 and re-opening on Monday, January 7. Any enquiries can be emailed to [email protected] over the holidays and we will get in touch with you as soon as possible during the week we re-open.

What a big year 2012 has been. The hinterland has seen some positive changes with the change in Government. We now have the responsibility of ensuring that necessary changes are made to make sure we move on from the former Labor Government to develop a stronger community. However we can only move forward with your help. It’s important that everyone has a say in regards to the proposed changes to bus routes effecting the Hinterland and greater Sunshine Coast area. This is the second round of consultation so passengers must speak up before the final plan is released. The LNP public transport recommendations suggest additional services for the main Sunshine Coast route (600) but there are also a number of recommendations to reduce duplication, adjust timetables or reduce services on routes with very low patronage.601 and 613 are just two services out of the Sunshine Coast transport network that are being considered for termination due to low patronage. There may also be several hinterland bus services that will be altered, to look at the full list of proposed changes and for a chance to give your own feedback please head to the Translink website. www.translink.com.auI’ve received feedback recently in regards to upgrading and improving safety measures outside Beerwah State School. The Minister for Transport and Main Roads Scott Emerson MP has called for recommendations into school zones that require the installation of flashing light signs. The Newman Government is working to upgrade signage in a bid to improve road safety for children by committing $10 million over four years to allow for the installation of these signs. I will be requesting that the Beerwah State School be made a priority in this initiative. In closing it has been a good year for the Hinterland and the Caloundra electorate and I’m looking forward to a prosperous New Year. My wife Judy and I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year.

It’s that time of year again

Traditional storytelling through art ‘John’s Stories’ is a pictorial style and sculpture exhibition of Indigenous artist John Murray at Caloundra Regional Gallery until January 13.John Murray loves storytelling through his art. John is physically disadvantaged and has found that making art allows him to better communicate with those around him.The very particular naive pictorial style and whimsical sculptures of ‘John’s Stories’ transform the traditional creation stories, passed down by the wiggy (old people). The paintings bring to life stories from daily indigenous life including fishing, camping, living in the forest and family life. This exhibition also features an installation of the Bagu fire-spirit sticks, a strong set of sculptural forms.Caloundra Regional Gallery is open free to the public, Wednesday to Sunday from 10.00am to 4.00pm.’ For further information please call 5420 8299.

Not a Lonely Christmas? We are in the most exciting time of the year for children; school is over, the expectation of Christmas is high, and the growing Christmas wish-list.For families it often means stocking up on food, and making plans to receive relatives. The Christmas season can be a time of happiness, joy and sharing. But give a thought for the people of your community who may not experience Christmas with any expectation whatsoever. The neighbours are off camping at the beach, visiting relatives, or tied up with their own family responsibilities. The shops are closed for a couple of days and the streets are eerily quiet. In our pursuit of the best Christmas experience for our own circle, are we prone to neglect the needy? Are we looking in one direction while the lonely, the bereaved, the hopeless, and the depressed still are viewing the world through their own glasses? It can be a time of great loneliness for those with mental illness or who are disenfranchised from their community or family for whatever reasons.

Suicide rates rise on and around the day.Apart from the emergency rooms of our hospitals noting an increased number of patients with broken bones or food stuck while swallowing, there are the numbers who silently cry in their inner loneliness. The celebration of Christmas is because of the Christ. He taught that we share ourselves with the lonely, the needy, the sick and the dishevelled. So this year how great could it be to look outside our circles and bring a forgotten person the joy of Christmas...and why not even, every day of the year? Why not bring a meal, or help someone in need or to visit a local church Christmas service. Jesus said our service to others is service to him.

Blackbean Castanospermum australeThis specimen tree is a fabulous addition to any large garden or acreage situation. A tall tree to 40m found in native rainforests along waterways, it has a strong root system which can be used to consolidate stream banks against erosion. In the garden situation Blackbean usually only grows to 15m with a beautiful dark green shady dense canopy spreading to 5m. The large branches could be used in a swing for those young at heart. The Blackbean prefers to be grown in moist, fertile and well-drained soils but is adaptable to a wide range of conditions, tolerates a light frost and shady conditions but prefers to be grown in full sun. As an indoor pot plant it can be grown successfully as a low maintenance attractive tub plant. When the plant has outgrown its indoor pot it can be readily transplanted into the garden. It displays vibrant sprays of red, orange and yellow pea shaped flowers in October to November. The nectar produced by these flowers attracts a wide variety of nectar loving birds, possums, bats and butterflies. The seeds and seed pods of this plant are very distinctive and highly poisonous to eat untreated, not only to us as humans, but also to a variety of stock animals. The timber was much sought after in times gone by, but is rarely harvested now. It is a highly regarded cabinet timber, used for furniture, carving and panelling.

Ask BrownieWe are keen to find out what this plant is. A cutting was given to us a couple of years ago but we have so far been unable to identify it although it is obviously a member of the succulent family. The flower has quite a strong scent, best described as being like rotten meat, so we have named it the ‘Stinky Plant’.Hopefully you can identify it for us and other readers who have received cuttings from us.Joy, Beerwah

What a spectacular flower. I can relate to the smell as I’ve got some Snake Lily (or Amorophallus) growing in the garden, and they smell the same.Your plant is called Stapelia (no easier common name) – scientific name Stapelia leendertziae. It’s from South Africa and can be grown in the ground (if you want) – although I like yours as a hanging basket – and it needs good drainage and 30 per cent shade – which is best achieved in this region in hanging baskets. It is a big group of plants, with over 100 types of Stapelia, and over 300 different genera (Stapelia is just one genera) in the ‘carrion flower’ group. The rotten meat smell attracts flies which are the flower pollinators. Some people have reported maggots being laid in the flowers which are then cleaned up by ants (nice little cycle of life). Surprisingly, two members of the group have sweet smelling flowers. Here’s a website which has information on this genera of plants - www.plantzafrica.com/plantqrs/stapelia.htm

Great trees for Glasshouse CountryBack in edition November 14, I started my campaign to highlight wonderful larger trees that people with bigger blocks of land can plant and leave as future ‘legacy trees’.So here are the first few for you to think about planting this weekend – buying and planting a tree for someone is a great Christmas present, or a lasting memorial for a loved one.

JacarandaWe’ve just come through the jacaranda flowering season, and what a spectacular scene it was. These spreading trees create wonderful summer shade and form a magical lilac ground cover when the flowers all begin to fall. They tend to grow wider than they are tall, so give it plenty of sideways space. They are native to Brazil and so are perfectly suited to our sub-tropical climate. Never prune them if possible, as it will spoil that wonderful umbrella shape they eventually grow into. What would spring be like without them?

Yellow Jacaranda or Mexican Fern TreeThe common name can vary for this tree, but its scientific name is Schizolobium parahybum. It is a towering straight trunked tree, branching high up into an umbrella of green, ferny foliage with a profusion of yellow, pea-shaped flowers in spring. This fast-growing tree originates from Brazil and Mexico and grows to about 40m – a great specimen can be seen next to Steve Irwin Way just down from the Roys Road intersection. The tree loses its large leaves in spring just before flowering occurs, making it a yellow beacon in the landscape. Growing tall and fairly open, it forms a wonderful upper level canopy without shading gardens below.

Illawarra Flame TreeI may be a bit biased – coming from Wollongong – but I think the Illawarra Flame Tree is one of the grandest looking trees around. Not growing to an enormous height or width, it can even be grown nicely in a suburban backyard. However it does shed largish leaves all at the same time – great for making mulch and compost, a problem for pools and tidy-freaks (you know who you are). But in spring, you are rewarded with a bright red explosion of small bell-shaped flowers. Even the small branches turn red.As they flower at the same time as the Jacaranda, planting them both together will result in a magnificent show.Next month I’ll bring you three more ‘Great Trees for Glasshouse Country’.

FUEL TAX CREDITS

Carolyn WheelerWoodford Office

1/116 Archer Street Phone: 5496 1156

email: [email protected]

Do you claim fuel tax credits on your BAS.Are you aware that there have been some changes?Changes to fuel tax credit ratesFrom 1 July 2012, fuel tax credit rates have changed. You may be affected by one or more of the following rate changes relating to:Heavy vehicles travelling on public roadsThe fuel tax credit rate for heavy vehicles that use taxable fuel and travel on a public road is reduced by the road user charge, which is subject to change. From 1 July 2012, after subtracting the road user charge of 25.5 cents per litre, the fuel tax credit rate for liquid fuels (for example, diesel or petrol) used in heavy vehicles is 12.643 cents per litre. For duty paid gaseous fuels (LPG, liquefied natural gas [LNG] and compressed natural gas [CNG]) used in heavy vehicles travelling on a public road, the road user charge reduces any fuel tax credit entitlement to nil.

A heavy vehicle is one that has a GVM greater than 4.5 tonne. Diesel vehicles acquired before 1 July 2006 can equal 4.5 tonne GVM. Liquid fuels used in specified off-road business activities• Agriculture• Fishing• ForestryThe current rate for these activities is 38.143 cents per litre.Liquid fuels used in some off-road business activitiesLiquid fuels are petrol, diesel and other combustible fossil fuels such as kerosene, mineral turpentine, white spirit, toluene, heating oil and some solvents. Fuel ethanol and biodiesel are not included as they have no effective fuel tax and are not fossil fuels. From 1 July 2012, the fuel tax credit rate increased for liquid fuels used in off-road activities eligible since 1 July 2008 (previously 19.0715 cents per litre). These activities include (but are not limited to):

• construction • manufacturing • wholesale/retail • property management • landscaping. The current rates for these activities are Petrol 32.623 cents per litre and Diesel 31.933 cents per litre. Please Note: fuels used in light vehicles, less than 4.5 tonne GVM travelling on a public road are not eligible for any Fuel Tax Credit.

Keep good recordsNow that many fuel tax credit rates are changing each year it is important to keep good records of your fuel usage. You need to show the types of fuel you acquired and what activities you used each fuel for, such as whether it was used in on-road or off-road activitiesPlease contact us if you require any further information on claiming Fuel Tax Credits.

Lessons for Beginners to Advanced

Beerwah Golf ClubContributed by Jenny KellyLadies Club newsWhat a great day we had for our Christmas break-up party. The party is funded by the proceeds of our weekly raffle and the girls have a chance to win lots of prizes, eat lovely food and then dance off all those extra calories. Eighty four girls played a nine hole Irish Fourball and the first prize hampers went to Glenys Parry, Julie McMahon, Brid John and Marie Norton. Our runners up were Margaret Hepburn, Joy Turner, Shirley Matheson and Rose Ballard. Sharon Phillips, Marg Hunkin, Jan Corfield and Debs Rutherford took home the hampers for coming third. It was a tough day on the greens for four of our girls who found the putts just wouldn't fall. Not to be forgotten, the NAGA award this year went to Monica Dangerfield, Pat Plowman, Barb McIntosh and yours truly, Jen Kelly. Our NTPs were won by Heather Coyle, Viki Bartel, Di Smith and Gloria White on number 2, and Lea Garner, Barb Whitfield, Sue Williamson and Hope Hannah took out number 5. The happiest winner on the day was Barb Whitfield who took home our major raffle prize of a lovely pair of sapphire earrings, which were generously donated to the girls by Neil Head.Thursday golf is finished for 2012, but the girls will be back in the swing again on January 17. Until then, we hope you have a safe and happy festive season and we'll see you all in the New Year.

Glasshouse Country Bowls ClubContributed by Dennis HumeWednesday, December 5: after their end of year Christmas Breakup Party, the ladies decided to play out the remaining few weeks of the year before the green is closed for maintenance. 5 bowlers turned up and a game of Triples was played. The winners were Di Hunt, Leisa Craven, Dennis Hume def Warren Blackbourne, Jenny Hobson, Dennis Hume 27 to 15. The breeze made playing enjoyable.Thursday, December 6: Open Pairs Bowls. A Round of the Mixed Fours Championship was played in the morning. Kerry Capern’s team def Millie Freshwater’s team 20 to 19. Also a morning social Pairs game was played. The winners were Ernie Sherwood, Robbie Dean with 2 + 41. The runners up were Bobby Bloomer, Ron Wilson with 20 in the second game.Saturday December 8: a Semi-final Mixed Fours Championship was played in the morning. Rob Farrell, Robbie Dean, Anne White def Gary Lehmann, Bray Howard, Margaret Lehmann 24 to 15 in what was a closely fought match.Saturday, December 8 in the afternoon: the Bowls Club celebrated its Christmas Luncheon and Annual Presentation of Club Championship and Competition Awards at Club Glass House. With 52 bowlers, guests and invited sponsors sitting down to a wonderful feast put on by Club Glass House. A great day was had by all.Make sure to follow Glasshouse Country Bowls on our web site – www.clubglasshouse.com.au and follow the prompts to the Bowls Section.

Club Championship and Competition Winners

Mooloolah Valley Bowls ClubContributed by Judy WalkerNo play on Tuesday – too hot. Golf Club newsThe Annual Christmas Mixed is a much anticipated event on our golfing calendar, sponsored by our patron Don Elks and his wife Thelma. 98 golfers played a 2BBB Stableford which was well won by Colleen Baker and Glen Watkins with a score of 46 points, ahead of runners up Vanessa Aland and Scott Yeates with 45 points. Due to Don and Thelma's generosity, there was a NTP on every hole, so 36 lucky players went home with a chicken for Christmas. Winners of the longest drives were Hope Hannah and John Elks. The course will be open over the Christmas break for both competition and social golf, so come on over and enjoy a round on this great local course. John in the pro shop and Janette, our secretary manager, will be on hand to make sure your visit is a great day out.See you on the course, stay safe and good golfing.

Sharon, Marg, Jan and Debs with their hampers.

Our winners Glenys, Julie, Brid and Marie Runners Up Margaret, Joy, Shirley and Rose

A bathtub testDuring a visit to the mental asylum, a visitor asked the Director, “how do you determine whether or not a patient should be institutionalised?” “Well,” said the Director, “we fill up a bathtub, and then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the patient and ask him or her to empty the bathtub.” “Oh, I understand,” said the visitor.

“A normal person would use the bucket because it’s bigger than the spoon or the teacup.” “No,” said the Director. “A normal person would have pulled the plug. Do you want a bed near the window?”Joan Fleming, Landsborough
