LOV I N G GOD
WITH OUR MIND
The greatest part of
Professors nowadays
takes up their time incontracting guilt and
asking for pardon, and
yet are not much the
better. Whereas, if they
had but the grace to add
to their faith, virtue, etc.,
they might have more
peace, live better lives
and not have their headsso often in a bag, as they
have (Kepler 1952)
An outspoken individual,
Daniel Webster said,
Education can make us
in to c lever dev i l s .
Bunyan would have
agreed. Of keen mindand good judgment, he
seemed to be unduly
suspicious of formal
education. He read few
books, and justified his
ignorance because it
permitted the Spirit to
work unhindered.
There is an old story
about an airline pilot that
goes like this: after the
plane had gone through
a terrible storm the pilot
said to the passengers,
Im sorry about therough ride, but there
wasnt much I could
about it. I think we are
through the worst of it,
although there are still a
few problems. We have
lost our navigational
equipment. It appears
that we are lost, but Iwant you to know that we
are making good time.
It appears that we are
lost, but we are making
good time, could well be
epitaph of our century.
Clever devils are more
concerned with ends
than with the means to
end. The first question is
not Is this the right thing
to do? but rather Is this
going to be effective?
This provokes the need
for education to produce
wise saints not cleverdevils.
Of course we are not
saved by our education.
B u t n e i t h e r d o e s
s a l v a t i o n p l a c e a
premium on ignorance.
To the woman of SamariaChrist said, You worship
w h a t y o u d o n o t
know (John 4: 22). Too
many of us are in that
p red i cament t oday ,
fumbling and groping in a
kind of theological fog
w i t h i n a c c u r a t e
compasses making usvulnerable to clever
devils.
The great commandment
reminds us to not only
love God with our whole
heart and soul, but also
with our mind.
(Read Matthew 22: 34-40
and Ephesians 4: 11-15)
May our good God bless
you all,
With prayerful regards,
Mothy Achen

M OT H ER 'S 7 0 T H
BIRTHDAY
Three sons left home, started
careers and prospered. Gettingback together, they discussed
the gifts that they were able to
give their elderly mother for her
70th birthday.
The first said, "I built a big
house for Mom."
The second said, "I sent her a
Mercedes with a driver."
The third smiled and said, "I've
got you both beat. You know
how Mom enjoys the Bible and
you know she can't see very
well. I sent her a brown parrot
that can recite he entire Bible.
I t took 20 monks in a
monastery 12 years to teach
him. I had to ledge to contribute
$100,000 a year for 10 years,
but it was worth it. Mom just
has to name the chapter and
verse and the parrot will recite
it."
Soon thereafter, Mom sent out
letters of thanks:
She wrote to the first son,
"Milton, the house you built is
not practical. I live in only one
room, but I have to heat, cool,
and clean the whole house."
She wrote to the second son,"Marvin, I am too old to travel. I
stay home all the time, so I
never use the Mercedes. And
the driver is so rude!"
She wrote the third son,
"Dearest Melvin, you were the
only son to have the good
sense to know what your
mother likes. The chicken was
delicious."
