Top Stitch: this is stitching that is meant to be seen, and gives your project a nice finished look. It is usually done about 1/16 to 1/8 inch away from the edge of a project. Use a contrasting thread for a decorative look. It can also be used as a functioning top-stitch, to separate pockets. We will use both in this project.

Pull right sides through: think of this as turning something inside out.

Back-stitch: stitch forward for three stitches, then stitch backwards for three stitches then forward again. This should be done at the beginning and the end of each seam or top-stitch you make.

1. Iron on the stabilizer to the back side of the fabric.

2. Put right sides together.

3. Fold ribbon in half.

4. Insert the fold of the ribbon in-between the fabric sandwich about 5 inches down on the short side.

5. Stitch all the way around 1/4 inch from edge, catching the ribbon in the seam, and leaving a two inch opening on one of the long sides of the project.

6. Snip the corners of the project, as shown in the photo, to lessen the bulk when flipping the project right side out.

7. Pull right sides through the 2 inch opening, use something like a chopstick to push the corners all the way out, so that the pretty side of the fabric is now showing.

8. Iron flat.

9. On the long side with the two inch opening, top-stitch all the way across 1/8” from the edge. If you would like, use a decorative stitch below the top stitching to show your creativity.

10. Fold the long edge up so that it covers about 2/3 of the opposite side. This will form your pocket.

11. Iron folded edge.

12. Top-stitch all the way around the edge of the folded project to create the pocket.

Pencil Case Roll

13. Decide what you would like your pencil case roll to hold. Draw lines how you want to divide your pocket into compartments. Use a disappearing ink fabric marker.

This is where your creativity can take over. Do you want just pencil and pen pockets? Do you want a calculator pocket? Pencil or pen pockets need about 3/4 inch. Other items, remember to add half an inch for the extra amount to go around the item when it’s inserted into the pocket for small items. For larger items like a phone or a calculator, measure across the item then add about 3/4 inch.

14. Carefully, stitch along your marked lines from the top of the pocket to the bottom. Be sure to backstitch at the top and the bottom so that your pockets don’t come undone.
