It is also a sign of our respect for the House of God. Therefore, one should always wear their “Sunday Best” to Mass: modesty, good taste and common sense should prevail. Accordingly, the following rules apply:

• NO SHORTS, EVER, FOR MEN, WOMEN OR CHILDREN.

• Women: No revealing clothing, low necklines, short skirts or bare midriffs. Please dress modestly with dignity and self-respect. We suggest that women wear a head covering.

• Men: No tattered, soiled work clothes, old jeans or gym clothes. Please wear “business or business casual attire” to set a good example for our young men and boys.

COMMENTARY ON THE FEAST OF SAINT BARTHOLOMEW, APOSTLE August 24

St. Bartholomew is probably the disciple introduced to our Lord by Philip under the name of Nathanael according to the Gospel of John:

“Philip met Nathanael and said to him: The one of whom Moses has written in the law and whom the prophets have announced we have found: it is Jesus of Nazareth the son of Joseph. And Nathanael said to him: Can anything good come from Nazareth? Philip said to him: Come and see. Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards Him and said of him: That is a true Israelite in whom there is no guile. Nathanael said to Him: Whence knowest Thou me? Jesus answered: Before Philip called thee when thou wast under the fig-tree I saw thee. Nathanael replied: Rabbi. Thou art the Son of God, Thou art the King of Israel.” (John 1. 45-49.) St. Luke mentions him among the twelve whom Christ, after a night of prayer, chose to be witnesses of His life, His

teaching and His miracles, and, after His Resurrection, preachers of the Gospel (Gospel). It is difficult to say where was the field of his apostolate. There is a tradition that he was flayed alive, as Cibo’s

magnificent white marble statue in Milan cathedral shows him. His relics were brought from Benevento to his church on an island in the Tiber at Rome. His name occurs among the Apostles in the Canon of the Mass. The texts of his Mass can mostly be applied to all the Apostles; the Collect reflects the Church’s constant care to carry on faithfully the mission of the Apostles, preserving and handing on to others the truth she has received from them.

LESSON TWENTY-SIXTH:

On Matrimony

Q. 1039. What are the conditions upon which the Church will permit a Catholic to marry one who is not a Catholic?

A. The conditions upon which the Church will permit a Catholic to marry one who is not a Catholic are:

1. That the Catholic be allowed the free exercise of his or her religion ;

2. That the Catholic shall try by teaching and good example to lead the one who is not a Catholic to embrace the true faith;

3. That all the children born of the marriage shall be brought up in the Catholic religion.

The marriage ceremony must not be repeated before a heretical minister. Without these promises, the Church will not consent to a mixed marriage, and if the Church does not consent the marriage is unlawful.

Q. 1040. What penalty does the Church impose on Catholics who marry before a Protestant minister?

A. Catholics who marry before a Protestant minister incur excommunication; that is, a censure of the Church or spiritual penalty which prevents them from receiving the Sacrament of Penance till the priest who hears their confession gets special faculties or permission from the bishop; because by such a marriage they make profession of a false religion in acknowledging as a priest one who has neither sacred power nor authority.
