avoiDing a SLow StartElmira was able to overcome a slow start to the season last year to win the conference tournament. The Soaring Eagles went 5-5 in their first 10 games and in 2011-12 went 4-6 in their first 10 games. In fact, over the last four seasons, Elmira has gone 20-18-2 through their first 10 games, just a shade over .500.

eCaC weSt SupremaCyThe Soaring Eagles were voted to finish first in the ECAC West Confer-ence according to the preseason coaches poll. Elmira received five first-place votes and a total of 35 points as they were picked to be the team to beat in 2014-15.

aLL-time vS. neumannThe Soaring Eagles have faced the Knights of Neumann University 41 times. Elmira has gone 26-13-2 against Neumann in those 41 meetings and have won the previous three meetings.

aLL-time vS. manhattanviLLeElmira has played the Valiants of Manhattanville College 48 times. El-mira is 24-19-5 against Manhattanville. Last year the Soaring Eagles went 1-1-1 against the Valiants, but Elmira will enter today’s game with the most recent victory in the series, a 7-4 win on February 15th.

CLaSS of 2016 to Carry the LoaDThe 10 returning members of the Class of 2016 carried the load offen-sively for Elmira last year, totaling 147 points on 57 goals and 90 assists. Elmira’s 10 returners were accountable for 46.8% of goals scored, 50.6% of assists, and 51.2% of the total points from last year’s team.

when it matterS moStJarryd ten Vaanholt ’16 recorded four game-winning goals last season, the most of any Elmira skater from last year’s team. ten Vaanholt’s four game-winners are the most scored by an EC skater since 2010-11 when recent grad Jesper Strale ’14 scored four in his rookie campaign. The last time an Elmira player had more than four game-winning goals dates back to the 2009-10 season when Rick Acorn ’12 recorded five.

not SinCe 2008-09As a team, Elmira scored 109 goals last season, the most by any EC team coached by Aaron Saul ’98. The last Elmira team to score more goals dates back to the 2008-09 season when the Soaring Eagles recorded 112. However, in five years at the helm of the EC men’s ice hockey program, Saul boasts three 100-goal seasons.

earLy teStThe Soaring Eagles will play seven of their first eight games away from the comforts of their home ice at the Murray Athletic Center. Elmira’s seven road games through their first eight games are the most the Soaring Eagles have had in over 15 years.
