Suzanne Murray, General ManagerI am excited to have them onboard and
look forward to working with the new team members that you have elected into position. We also thank Wayne Walworth for his 2 year service on the Board.
Our Board of Directors is charged with maintaining, preserving and enhancing the common assets of our association. To preform those duties, our Board depends on committee recommendations and the advice and counsel of experts in various fields of community association management such as attorneys, landscapers, insurance specialists and the management company.
When making decisions regarding our community, the Board is expected to consider all facts and factors involved in the issue and make the best business decision possible. Sometimes those decisions may not appear to be in the best interests of all the owners; however, if each owner understood all the underlying issues that go into making the decision, they would understand that the board’s choice of action is usually the most practical and well thought out.
In addition to dealing with insurance, maintenance, financial and contractual decisions, the board must also balance their positions on the board with their role as a homeowner. If assessments are increased, that means they are increased for them also. If rules are enacted, that means they have to obey them, too. Being a board member does not grant one immunity from the responsibilities of living in an association. In fact, serving on the board reflects just how seriously they take that responsibility. So please keep in mind that our board members are actually doing “double-duty” for our community. They serve as board members and neighbors. All who have served and currently serve deserve a heartfelt thank you for all of their contributions to our community!
If you see a maintenance item that needs addressing, please call our office at 480-983-5555 or you are more than welcome to come in and fill out a work order or landscape request form.
Important Mountaineer ChangesPer negotiations with Ray’s Printing and the Mountaineer Staff, this April’s
Mountaineer will be the last hard copy issue until September 2018. The four months of summer (May, June, July and August) we are going “dark”. There will be an abbreviated newsletter on our website at mbvaz.org for those summer months. The cut off for articles will remain the same, the 25th of the month. Wait, we’re not done! Due to postal problems with delivery, more changes will be made. Starting immediately with April’s issue and again in September, we will stop mailing the Mountaineer. All Mountaineers will be available for pickup in the office or the Superstition Center on the 15th of the month. If anyone has a real inability to pick up their copy, please let the Mountaineer Staff know at (630)-546-4018 and we will deliver it to your home. We know, nobody likes changes, but while MBV’s cost for the Mountaineer is “zero” and we want to keep it that way, our printer must deal with his costs, post office changes and less advertising. Please be patient with our summer “black out” and new delivery system. At your service, your Mountaineer Staff
Please welcome our new board of directors for 2018-2019

Community CornerBOARD HIGHLIGHTSSubmitted by Peter Cavoto
I am sure you all have been busy with the many successful activities at MountainBrook Village. Wow, the Canyon Cookout has been so successful, the dances and programs, Trivia, the Band and Choir concerts, the fashion luncheon and the Volunteer Happy Hour. And this does not even include all the groups like Pottery, Ceramics, Bocce, etc. etc. We truly do appreciate our volunteers as none of the above would occur without the help of residents. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
The following BOD liaisons were approved for the HOA Steering committees: Activities-Audrey Morganegg, Architectural-Janet Swaim, Budget & Finance-Jan Pitts, Building & Grounds-Janet Christopherson, Communications-Chris Bukovac, Planning-Pam Ingram. BOD officers are Peter Cavoto-President, Janet Christopherson-Vice President, Audrey Morganegg-Secretary, Tami Tack-Treasurer.
To save money, we are grouping some of the smaller projects together into one bid, such as the walkway to the activity center, the church walkway, the recycling center, and the ADA access walkway at Sunset.
The Board approved a contract with DCA to provide architectural design drawings of mechanical, electrical, etc. for the Sunset plan which is on display in the library. Bill Duncan of DCA will be the project manager for the HOA and obtain 4 bids based on the drawings. The Planning committee worked all year obtaining input
from 49 user groups to create requirements which determined the final design. Thank you Planning Committee, for all your hours and expertise. It is expected, if approved by the county, that construction could begin in July and be completed by the middle of November.
The BOD received recommendations for replacement of fitness equipment as per life expectancy of the HOA reserve study. New equipment was not put in during the Ocotillo remodel. Recommendations were made by assessing needs of users, reviewing tapes of equipment usage, and reviewing new equipment. It is suggested that mats and balls that were removed during the remodel be reinserted into the space. This has been tabled at this time to be reviewed again in the fall. In the meantime, we have asked the General Manager to get a price for the recommendation to see what costs would be involved.
Superstition Kitchen items are all ordered and construction to begin in June and expected to be completed by the end of the month. Pickleball is awaiting redesign for viewing area then will proceed to bid.
You should have received emails regarding updating your personal information for the HOA that is used for the phonebook and email blasts. Please make sure you complete this annually even if all your information stays the same. Last year some resident’s information was not in the phonebook because they did not fill out the online information. If you need computer assistance, please stop by the office.
As always, remember to email the BOD at [email protected] anytime with concerns, ideas or thoughts. Thank you.

From Your Dance Committee by Lynnel Cochrane
It has been an outstanding dance season in MBV, but as Ben Cocks sang in 2012, “ the dance is over, and the band has left the hall”. The dance committee have appreciated your support and have enjoyed providing the various fabulous dance parties this past year. We are already working with Jennifer, our Life Style Director, on plans and bands for the fall season. Read about ongoing updates in your monthly Mountaineers. For those still in the village, the Imagine Band will provide a lively Cinco de Mayo themed evening of music and dancing on Friday, May 4. Come and join the fiesta!
Those Pesky HOA’sJavelinas & Bird Seed & Fruit RatsBy Debbie O’Brien
We all love to be kind to the wildlife around us. We scatter bird seed in back of the house, we put out carrots for the deer, pet food for the javelina and maybe water. And we don’t always have the time to pick up citrus fruit off the ground under the trees.
I am getting calls about javelinas and coyotes being fed by homeowners and fruit/roof rats invading yards and taking up residence in attics. The fruit/roof rats feast on the fallen citrus fruit around the trees, they love midnight raids on the scattered birdseed, next they set up housekeeping in your attic and start making baby fruit rats. Leave the garage door open, that’s an invitation to come into your house. If you leave for the summer and have fruit trees, it is recommended that you have someone checking for fallen fruit to avoid having some uninvited guests when you return.
Javelina and coyote, when fed, become comfortable with humans and may become aggressive. You can do these animals a favor by not making them comfortable with food and water. If they keep their natural fear of people, they are less likely to become a nuisance and more likely to live a longer life in the wild. The AZ Fish and Game website says “people should NEVER feed javelina.”
In 2006, the Arizona Legislature passed a “no feeding wildlife” law, making it illegal to feed wildlife (except birds and tree squirrels) in Pima, Pinal and Maricopa counties. If wildlife feeding in your neighborhood is causing large animals to become a problem, please
contact AZ Game and Fish Violation (800) 352-0700. So, what can you do to keep the pesky and possibly harmful
animals away from your home? Only have birdseed in hanging feeders, pick up fruit on a daily basis, don’t leave water or other food out. Food for wildlife is plentiful in the foothill and mountain areas. Javelinas are classified as herbivores and prefer foods that consist of roots, grasses, seeds, fruit and cacti—particularly prickly pear. Water is abundant too, in golf course lakes, resort fountains and ponds, which are just a few sources.
Don’t let those cute faces fool you!

VILLAGE THEATREBill Wash
The MBV Theatre brings Ken Ludwig’s Moon Over Buffalo to its stage. This madcap comedy centers around George and Charlotte Hay, fading stars of Broadway who are appearing in Cyrano De Bergerac in their rundown touring company in Buffalo, New York. On the brink of a disastrous split-up caused by George’s dalliances with a young ingénue, Charlotte threatens to leave, and George goes on a grief stricken drinking binge. Then word is received that they may get one last shot at stardom. Frank Capra is coming to attend their matinee and if he likes what he sees, he might cast them in leading rolls in his movie remake of The Scarlet Pimpernel. Will George be sober enough to emote? Mistaken identities, confusion, pratfalls, slamming doors aplenty and back stage shenanigans in this fast paced, hilarious screwball comedy and a throwback to the personalities that inhabit the world of theater.
Directing the play is Kathy Buelow. Kathy is no stranger to community theater, having appeared in three plays on the MBV stage. Prior to moving to MountainBrook, she appeared in Music Man, Dr. Cook’s Garden and as Ethel in Moon Over Buffalo. She is most proud of receiving an Outstanding Actor award from the American Association of Community Theatre for her portrayal of Hope in Almost Maine.
Auditions were held in early March to select actors for the roles in Moon Over Buffalo. As Director, Kathy awarded rolls to David Huffman, Karleen Huffman, Merry Brennan, Linda Belland, Barbara Wolf, Pat Hardie, John Soper and Bill McCracken.
The MBV Theatre’s curtain is now closed but will reopen to the Village Theatre’s four performances of Moon Over Buffalo on February 28-March 3, 2019. Kathy will now spend the summer with her nose in the play book so that she will know intimately how she wants her actors to perform their roles. And to the cast, we wish them all a very happy summer memorizing lines and developing their characters. Oh, and “Break A Leg”.

See below
Thinking about renting your home?
The MBV website and the Mountaineer run ads for home rentals in MBV and state they must be for a 30-day minimum. There recently was a home on an online rental website, with a listing to rent out a house in MBV for 1 or more nights at a time. If a homeowner is using a rental manager, it is the homeowner’s responsibility to inform their manager of this 30-day minimum rule and 55+ requirement and see that they are enforced.
The CC&R’s clearly address the approved time frames and ages of those that can rent in MBV. CC&R 10.20.4 states “No Owner may lease less than his, her or its entire Lot.” (This means no renting out just the Casita.) “No Lot may be leased for a period of less than thirty (30) days.” A renter must be 55+, and kids under 18 may only stay in the home for a total of 90 days per year, not 90 days per child or per rental. If you have any questions, give the office a call.

MBV POTTERS VISIT AREA STUDIOS
On February 25, eighteen potters from the MBV Pottery Club visited four studios on the Phoenix/Mesa Studio Tour, one each in Gilbert, Tempe, Phoenix, and Scottsdale. They saw multiple pottery artists show specific techniques and styles, including use of “slip”, underglazing, slumping, painting, etc. They were able to ask questions and observe demonstrations, which allowed them to bring home new ideas for their own works that they are creating in our Fired Arts Studio. Several of the artists have agreed to come to MBV to share their expertise as our guest instructors; the first of these is Judith Amiel-Bendheim, who demonstrated underglazing and embellishments on March 17. The Pottery Club looks forward to future field trips to continue learning new techniques and get new ideas.

Tennis Talk by Betsey Baker
The MBV Tennis Club “Rock N Roll” tournament was a battle between the Rockers and the Rollers, while playing tennis to the music of the 60’s. This lively musical tournament was hosted by Lee Alberts and Richard Muscio. A big thank you to them and the volunteers who made it happen and a shout out to the winning Rollers. The delicious “Taco-bout a PARTY” was prepared by Deb Thompson and Carol Elrod. Mental tennis tip to increase concentration- If you’re distracted in any way, due to nerves, anger, frustration — repeat the simple phrase “ONLY THE BALL”. The repetition will assist you to block out negative thoughts, and the words will remind you “keep your focus where it belongs” on the ball! MBV Tennis Club leagues resume in October. We enjoyed great participation this season and will see you next Fall. Round Robin continues at 8AM Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. See YOU on the courts.
Pickleball News by Bud Morrison
The MBV pickleball club is wrapping up the 2018 winter/spring season. This season we saw three new afternoon leagues. The MBV BOD continued to talk about new courts, which are very much needed.
Bud Morrison continues as our pball president, Paul Cechovic continues as secretary and Sue Peterson agreed to take on the treasurer’s position. Thanks to Garry Provost for his work as the treasurer for the past season. The club saw a large increase in membership, ending the season with 149 members. Most days saw all four courts full and paddles in the queue awaiting competitive play. A new pball practice machine was purchased and is being used by members to further their skills. All in all, we had a great year. We’ll see you snowbirds in the fall and those year-round residents in the early morning hours on our courts. Enjoy your summer, stay healthy and practice those dinking skills! Zero-zero-two, game on

DartsBy John Kloosterman
Never under estimate a beginning dart thrower. Fred Greenway played darts for about a month before leaving last summer and has been back now for 4 months. When Fred returned to darts he got a healthy beginner’s handicap. Fred’s team has won games that have come down to the wire against experienced players. He has now earned a new title as the current “Bulls Eye King” by finishing a game with 2 single bulls and a double bull. Congratulations, Fred!! And our own experienced dart player, Stan Condell, has proved himself with just three darts. Stan popped a triple 20, triple 19, and a triple 18 closing half the numbers in a game of “Dirty Cricket”. Wow! World class darts happening right here in MBV. Join us for an evening of fun. TUESDAY evenings at 6:30 pm in the Ocotillo Room. See you there!!

Friends of the Libraryby Ruth Parker
March 13 was a busy day for the library. That was the date of the annual book giveaway. Why does the library give books away, you might ask? There are a couple of reasons - due to the generosity of our residents, the library shelves become full. Then there are books that haven’t been off the shelf in a long time. We know that by those little slash marks at the top of the book. And we sometimes find there are 2 or 3 copies of the same book. Again, space is a consideration. And to keep reasonably current, some very old books go to the giveaway. So, what happens to books that are left over? They are donated various places: AJ Library, the vets, Lost Dutchman Museum for example. So, thank you for helping to make the library so great, for helping to make the Giveaway a success and please don’t re-donate any books to the library. They’re all yours. Cheers!
Bocce BallIf you want to make new friendships, have fun and hear laughter,
then come to the Bocce Ball Courts on any Monday, Wednesday, or Friday from 9:30a.m. to 11:30a.m. You need not be experienced to play! For additional information: Call Carol Adkins, (303) 881-4857
Book Discussionby Peggy Malsom
The April MBV Book Discussion has been cancelled due to conflicts in the schedule. At the March meeting, suggestions for the 2018-2019 line up of books to be read were considered. The final determination is not available in time for this edition of the Mountaineer. Please look for the list in the next issue in time for your summer reading pleasure. The suggestions were great, and it looks like another super year of reading for MountainBrook. Keep watching this space for updates and see you in November.
Wii BowlingWii Bowling is every Thursday in the MPR at 1:00. Well
Dan Peterson has done it again. On February 8th Dan Peterson bowled his third “PERFECT” 300 game. We congratulate Dan on this amazing game. This is his second 300 this year. Looks like Dan’s trying for one a month. Way to go Dan.
“Stampin Up with Carol”- “Stampin Up with Carol”- This is a monthly greeting card
class. This is an ideal class from new stampers to experienced stampers. All products except for adhesive & scissors will be provided. The classes will be April 18th & 19th and May 9th and 10th. The classes are held in the Ocotillo Arts & Craft Room at 1:00. The cost is $16.00, and you will create 4 all occasion cards using Stampin Up products. The signup sheet will be in the office for the next class until the Saturday before. If you need to sign up after that or have any questions, please contact me. I can be reached at 708-612-9112 or email me at [email protected].
On The BallTry a ball class with us this spring. It’s fun and it’s FREE! This
class consists of toning, cardio, and some light weight training. All moves are done on the ball, under the ball, beside the ball, or just holding the ball. It’s a super fun class, choreographed to upbeat music. Students will need a mat, ball, and two sets of hand weights, one very light, and the other a little heavier. Beginners will probably need 2 three-pound weights and 2 five-pound weights. More experienced students can bring heavier weights, according to their fitness level. When purchasing a ball, remember, you should be able to sit on it just as if you are in a chair. If your knees are under your chin, the ball is too small. If you are semi standing, the ball is too large. Most balls have height charts to help you decide. Class will be held in the Ocotillo Room Thursday at 10:00, right after Pilates. Come have fun while burning calories, toning, and strengthening muscles. Any questions please call or email: Fran Strickler (317)797-9224 or [email protected].
Supper ClubShrimp and spice lovers rejoiced on Saturday!! The entree for
dinner that evening was Shrimp Boil Foil Packets. When the packets came off the grill, diners drooled. When combined with Cheesy Bacon Dip, Asian Salad and Blueberry Lemon Cake it was a divine dinner. And there may have been a bit of libation as well. The company was interesting, convivial, jovial, friendly and downright fun. If you haven’t joined us yet it’s never too late. By the way, the word convivial is from the Latin pertaining to a feast. “If more of us valued good and cheer and song above horded gold, it would be a merrier world.” J.R.R.Tolkien. If you’d like to join us just give Marcia Ritenour (480-577-5466) or Ruth Parker (253-278-2759) a call and you’ll be all set.

AED Machines and 911 Emergencies
What in the world is an AED? An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient and can treat them through defibrillation. The application of electrical therapy stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to re-establish an effective rhythm. There is an AED in each of the buildings on the campus.
911 phones are automated phones that go directly to the fire department.AED and 911 Campus Locations:Activity Center: Staff 911 phones at the front desk and AED is located
on the north wall of the library.Sunset Center: 911 phone is on the wall and the AED is on the west

fire department, is located on the west wall exterior for the use of the pool.If at any time there is an emergency, use the phone closest to the
emergency location and report the location of the address by reading the sign above the phone. You are also able to call 911 on your cell phone if one is available. The most important thing you can do is stay calm.
If you are near someone having a heart attack, get the AED device and when it is opened, it will verbally walk you through the steps to help someone until Emergency Services arrive. Be sure someone calls 911 as soon as possible. If the person has no pulse, the AED will not activate.
And what a blessing to have our firemen and EMT’s “across the street”.
SUNSET RENOVATION: What is happening?
In the Spring of 2017, the Board(BOD) decided to take a closer look at the Sunset renovation and obtain three bids prior to continuing the project. The BOD tasked the Planning committee to gather user input, develop requirements and then meet with the contracted architect to develop a plan to meet users needs. The three highest needs were sound, light and circulation. They analyzed feedback from several different user groups of many participants via needs and analysis meetings. Besides the three priorities above, flexibility of use, and not using rooms for storage therebye increasing usable space were important.
The biggest question is what will change in the Sunset? The two north rooms will have doors inbetween to allow it to become larger. The east room is larger, and the south rooms become one larger room. The buildings west and south doors will be ADA compliant as well as the restrooms. There will now be two stalls in each restroom. The kitchen is larger and has activity stations designed to increase circulation and decrease congestion. The patio on the east side becomes storage for tables, chairs and dry goods. The hall cabinets will be repurposed into the present user storage room. There will no longer be a curved reception bar but instead be rolling counters to be used flexibly and, outlets on walls for crockpots etc. A user-friendly AV system is planned. Acoustical materials to address sound are recommended for walls and ceilings. Updated additional HVAC and improved room lighting are planned.
Tables and chairs will be the same type as present - square tables and green chairs. Those chairs and tables will be refurbished and put in side rooms and, new tables and chairs purchased for the large room. We are hoping to sell the burgundy leatherette chairs, found uncomfortable by many.
The west window will stay without a barrier, but the cactus will be removed to provide for more space. They may be placed on the exterior side of the window and the outside bushes changed.
The BOD has approved the design and given a contract to Duncan Coors Architects for the Architectural drawings and project management. DCA will obtain at least three bids for the work then the BOD will determine which to accept.
Renovation is planned to start July 1 with completion by mid-November. There may be a crunch time for rooms and we will need flexibility of residents this summer and fall. We hope to be on time and with this extensive planning to have eliminated major overages.
As always, any questions or concerns please email the board at [email protected]/
Trivia Takes Over MBVBy Diana Jensen
Between Randy Ratcliff and Mike Worthy, with the help of our Activity Director Jennifer, and our MBV Trivia enthusiasts, our first foray into a Trivia night turned out to be a huge success. It started out big and got bigger. The third, and last night, was a sell-out, 28 tables. Next season is scheduled to start mid-October and November and then restart again mid- January, February and March. Watch for dates and times and sign up early to get a table. Where else can you go for $2.50 and drink your own booze and eat your own food and have more fun than you can imagine!

MBV Veterans Joining ForcesBy Dennis Malsom
The MBV Veterans Group held their first get together on Monday, March 19. Currently, the group has 35 members. From this first informal meeting. it was determined that everyone wanted this to be a social group with no special treatment related to branch of service, rank, decorations or awards. Everyone is to be recognized simply for the fact that they served their country.
The enthusiasm and support provided by those in attendance has led us to realize that the groundwork is in place for this group of MountainBrook veterans to become an informative and active force for all veterans in our community. The group decided it would like to meet monthly except for the months of June, July and August.
We encourage those that are interested in becoming a part of this new MBV group to please email Dennis Malsom at [email protected]. We emphasis that this is strictly a social group. Our meetings will not be “business” like, but low key and very informal. In fact, we encourage BYOB.
This is just a way for vets to get together, laugh, reminisce, tell a few stories and enjoy each other’s company. Sometimes the GI lingo doesn’t quite translate into the civilian lingo. If this sounds interesting, please let us know and we will keep you updated regarding future meetings.
Going forward, watch for monthly updates on the “Classes, Groups & Clubs” pages.
