MountainBrook Village Wants You! You are what makes MountainBrook Village a great place to live. What you do, the events you help plan and attend, the activities you are involved with, the committees you join, the meetings you contribute to, friends you make while practicing with the band, theater group or choir, the list goes on and on. Every little thing you do here makes it better for all of us. But you probably didn’t realize that you were writing the story of MountainBrook while you were doing these fun things, did you? Now is your chance to jot it down and become part of history. The MBV History Project is com-piling a timeline of events from the decade 2010 – 2020. In fact, we want to hear about your participation in the remodeling process. It was a major time of refurbishing and updating our campus. What part did you play? I’m forgetting a million things that were going on during those years as I type this without referring to my notes. But I hope you get what I’m trying to convey. They were active, vital years. Mountaineer October 2021

The Board approved the following at the September 28, 2021, meeting: ACTIVITY COMMITTEE

Approved the recommendation by the Activity Committee to sell Holiday live wreaths from Sherwood Forest Farms to Mountain-Brook residents as a community fundraiser. The proceeds will be donated to Project Help within the Apache Junction School District. BUILDING & GROUNDS Approved the bid from Galaxy Coatings in the amount of $115,325.00 to be expensed from General Reserves to replace the entire pool decking surface, the outdoor shower pans, and the entry ways to the Mesquite Center from the pool. There is a 15-year war-ranty for the poly aspartic product base. Requested the General Manager to obtain bids from general con-tractors to replace the steppingstones from the west parking lot to the Activity Office with a concrete sidewalk and also add a concrete grill slab for Canyon Cookout on the east side of the sidewalk on the east side of the Superstition Center. The current stepping stones create a possible tripping hazard. This project may be combined with possible concrete work related to the proposed barrier/fencing wall to the west side of the main MountainBrook entrance. Approved the recommendation by Building & Grounds that the Sunset Center Parking lot area is the preferred outdoor events loca-tion based on analysis data comparing two viable locations. OUTSIDE ENTERTAINMENT AD HOC COMMITTEE Accepted the Outside Entertainment Ad Hoc Committee presenta-tion containing the feasibility, reasons, locations, and potential dates for outside entertainment. Also, approved disbanding the Outside Entertainment Ad Hoc Committee as the task has been completed. COMMUNICATIONS Approved requesting the General Manager to work jointly with the Audio-Visual leader to obtain appropriate HDMI cables for base-line audio visual equipment, plus locking devise, for each television in the campus rooms which host meetings or classes. Approved requesting the General Manager to contact vendors to evaluate and submit equipment suggestions to support the public address needs in the Mesquite Center. Board meetings were held this summer in the Mesquite and the in-person audience had diffi-culty hearing Board members. PLANNING Received the Planning Committee Fitness Center Focus Group presentation on the review process, evaluation of vendor proposals, equipment upgrades recommendations, and future equipment evalu-ation timelines. The Presentation will be on the website shortly. The Fitness Center Focus Group is tasked to meet with the General Manager to investigate adding a large screen TV and fitness in-struction subscription service in the Multi-purpose Room. Approved the bid of $120,014.00 less $4,750.00 for equipment trade ins plus $2,148.71 for an entertainment console on the present True RC900 recumbent bike from Commercial Fitness Store for fitness equipment identified in the Fitness Center Focus Group presentation to be expensed from General Reserves.

PLANNING Received the Reserve Component Review Presentation on the as-sessment of the components/assets listed in the 2021 Reserve Study which have a Useful Life of zero to four years. Received the Storage Annex Presentation on the evaluation and inventory of current storage conditions and needs, and the future consideration of a Superstition Center Annex. Received the Presentation by Planning Committee Dog Park Task Force regarding the installation of pet waste stations throughout the common areas. Approved purchasing small pet waste bag containers for distribu-tion to all pet owner residents to be expensed from Operating. Approved purchasing and installing two (2) pet waste stations plus refuse bags to be expensed from Operating. Other Business: Storage Policy and Procedure Update – Approved the recommend-ed updated Storage Policy and Procedure document as presented. The updated Policy will be on the website shortly. Approved an additional deposit of $15,000 to Arizona Stage, LLC to be applied against the capital expenses for the remaining lighting products for the Superstition Center to be expensed from General Reserves. Approved amount not to exceed $500.00 to the Christmas Light Group to purchase replacement lights and associated materials. Approved a bid of $6,664.36 from 101 Mobility for an Aqua Creek Mighty 400 Pool Lift chair to be expensed from General Reserves. The present pool lift chair was purchased in 2004. The seals on the chair have deteriorated causing the chair to be unusable. Two com-panies looked at the chair and recommended replacement of same. Installment of the new pool chair lift will be coordinated with the pool deck replacement project. Additionally, the Communications Committee is tasked to review appropriate signage for usage and possible light for sign. Pottery Club Protocols Reinstatement request – The Board neither approved nor authorized the request by the Pottery Club to reinstate masking, advanced cleaning, and social distancing in the Fired Arts Center. COVID 19/Vaccination Community Campus Protocols The Request from the organizers of MBV sponsored Trivia to be made open by only those MBV residents who show valid proof of receiving the Covid-19 vaccination was neither authorized nor ap-proved. Approved those homeowners organizing private events at Moun-tainBrook may require additional health related requirements for participation by noting it on the Group and Activity Room Request Form. Approved that MountainBrook sponsored events will NOT require proof of vaccination by participants.

Mountaineer October 2021

Mindy Schooley, General Manager

Greetings MountainBrook Village Residents!

Happy Fall, y’all! We survived another HOT summer here in AZ and can feel the break in temperatures coming slowly but surely. October typically sees the beginning of returning resi-dents. We hope to see those of you who can come to town this winter arrive safely and stay for an enjoyable season. We’ve got a lot of fun events and activities planned for the upcoming season but have been keeping an eye on Covid19 pandemic. Unfortunately, we are not out of the woods just yet, so we ask that residents still be mindful of safety and health protocols that are enacted. Face coverings are recommended through Moun-tainBrook Village and Amenities. Anyone who has had close contact with someone with Covid-19 should stay home for 14 days after their last exposure to that person. People with Covid-19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported – ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. Symptoms can appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. The Association will continue to take recommendations from resources such as the CDC, as well as, Arizona Department of Public Health. We are in this together and what connects us is a community where everyone does their part. Your continued patience and cooperation dur-ing this time are greatly appreciated, and please remember we are here when you need us. PLEASE REMEMBER – NO FOOD OR GLASS PER-MITTED AT THE COMMUNITY POOL Summer might have come and gone but that doesn’t mean our Community Pools won’t still be the active hotspot in MountainBrook Village! Please be reminded that per the Pool and Spa area rules, food and/or glass containers are not permitted in the pool area! If glass is broken around the pools and/or spas, it will result in an immediate closure of the entire pool area. We all know how much the pools and spas are enjoyed by many. Please be cognizant and keep your glass containers and/or bottles away from this area. Also, please remember that children, ages 3 and older, are only permitted to be in the East Pool during the posted hours of 10:00am – 2:00pm and 4:30pm – 6:30pm daily. Please remind your guests to abide by all posted rules as well! These policies were developed for the quiet use and enjoy-ment of the homeowners/residents. 2022 Budget coming soon! Mark your calendars – the next assessment will be due on January 1st, 2022. Billing statements will be processed upon final approval of the new budget. If you’re returning to MountainBrook Village this fall – please be sure to update your billing address to ensure timely delivery of your billing statement. You can email a request to: [email protected] or call FirstService Residential’s Customer Care Department at 480.551.4300.

Consider signing up for E-Statements! FirstService Residential offers e-statements. MountainBrook Village has a lot of seasonal residents which means every ex-tended time away from the Village means you must provide a change of address. By signing up for e-statements you won’t have to worry about missing your billing statement. Email goes where you go! For more information, visit: https://estatements.welcomelink.com/index.cfm?b=arizona •Convenient, 24/7 Access - Check e-Statements anytime, anywhere. Simply log in and view up to 18 months of com-plete online statements. •Reduced Risk - Using e-Statements protects users from fraud and identity theft by eliminating unnecessary paper statements that include personal account information. •Go Green - Welcome Link’s e-Statements reduce users' pa-per consumption and carbon footprints, making this the better environmental option. Association Document Update – Storage Policy The Board of Directors recently adopted revisions to the Stor-age Policy. Please visit the community website, mbvaz.org, or request an updated copy of this important governing docu-ment. Upcoming Board Meetings Monthly Board Workshops and Meetings are now open to in-person attendees. The October 2021 meetings will be in the Superstition Center this month. Virtual participation is still available through Zoom. Please check the website mbvaz.org to confirm dates, times, and agendas.

Volunteers Build Community!

It is often said that volunteers are the glue that holds a com-munity together and this is evident here at MountainBrook Village. Our volunteers are treasured, appreciated and quite honestly, the community would not be what it is without them. As a new employee I am thankful for the volunteers who help. More than that, I see the joy and pride they feel when they are able to contribute. There have been many studies done on the positive effects of volunteering and they are quite compelling. Firstly, volunteering improves mental health by connecting you to others. It creates a support network and is a path to-ward friendships. Working in the neighborhood is a way to meet others with similar interests and passions that can lead to further friendship. Isolation, due to the pandemic or other life circumstances can lead to depression. Volunteering is a way to create regular contact with other people and combat loneli-ness. Secondly, there are physical benefits to volunteering. Studies show that older adults who contribute to their community ex-

perience less chronic pain than those who don’t. In addition, volunteering has been proven to lower chances of heart dis-ease and dementia. Furthermore, long-term volunteers have longer lives and better overall health. MountainBrook needs help running the audio-visual equip-ment in the Superstition Center for various events. The cur-rent volunteers are a wealth of knowledge and will train you in the skills you need to run the show! The Activity Commit-tee is looking for help decorating as the seasons change and for special events. Join Travel Club to help plan new adven-tures as the country opens up again. There is also a need to help with the hanging of the Christmas lights throughout the community. This is a FUN one day event that will get you in the Spirit of the holidays. There are opportunities for both men and women, so please consider where you can lend a hand in the MountainBrook Community. Perhaps you could set a goal for a number of hours you would like to contribute each year. Maybe you have expertise that you could put to use or challenge your-self to learn a new skill in an area we have a need. Whatever you decide, know that the time you spent contributing to your community not only benefits others, but it’s an investment in your mental and physical health. Overall, the more you volun-teer, the happier you are! Other committees to explore are Communications, Planning, Architectural and Budget and Finance. Perhaps visit all Com-mittees to see what they are all about before volunteering.

Planning on renting out your home? The MBV website and the Mountaineer run ads for home rentals in MountainBrook Village and states they must be for a 30-day minimum. The CC&R’s clearly address the approved time frames and ages of those that can rent in MBV. CC&R 10.20.4 states “No Owner may lease less than his, her or its entire Lot.” (This means no renting out just the Casita.) “No Lot may be leased for a period of less than thirty (30) days.” A renter must be 55+, and kids under 18 may only stay in the home for a total of 90 days per year, not 90 days per child or per rental. If you have any questions, give the office a call.

In The Territory....... Submitted by Mike Karr

Flagstaff Arizona, Chapter Two. Just 12 miles north of Flagstaff is the entrance to the Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, and the Wupatki National Monu-ment. One entrance fee covers both, and there is a nice Visitor's Center at Wupatki. Sunset Crater was one of approximately 600 volcanoes in the area, and it is be-lieved that it erupted about 800 years ago. Although not true, the lava flows seem to have hardened to a rough surface very recently. The Wupatki Pueblo was built dur-ing the 1100's and it is thought that approximately 100 people lived here together. Their water source came from a spring that has since dried up, winter snowfall, and monsoon rainstorms, but the entire area was very agri-culturally oriented and later occupied with cattle and sheep. It is well worth taking the 35 mile loop road to visit both of these interesting sites. Another crater of in-terest which we didn't get to is Meteor Crater and it is 45 miles east towards Winslow. On our way to the Snowbowl, which without doubt is Arizona's largest and finest skiing and snowboarding ar-ea, we stopped at the Museum of Northern Arizona where we were quite impressed with all of the Native American artifacts on display. Check out their website at www.musnaz.org for more information. Although we are not skiers, the facilities at the Snowbowl are quite im-pressive with 8 lifts, 55 runs and a vertical drop of 2,300' from a maximum height of 11,500'. Outdoor dining was delightful and it was great to soak up the mountain air. You can also see Humphrey Peak from here which is Arizona's tallest mountain at 12,633', and is a part of the San Francisco Peaks. The average annual snowfall at the Snowbowl is 200” and this is augmented with manufac-tured snow-making equipment. NASA has used many areas around Flagstaff to train all 12 astronauts who have walked on the moon as well as many others. They continue to use the area for instru-ment development, lunar rover field tests and lunar map-ping. There is a Lunar Landmarks Trail which we'll take the next time we return to Flagstaff. We'll also go to Walnut Canyon which is just outside the city and take

advantage of some of the wonderful bars and restaurants that are in the area. Oh yes, it is 20 to 30 degrees cooler in Flagstaff than here in the Valley, and that makes it even more enticing for a great summer getaway.

Fitness Center Equipment Replacement If you have been to our fitness center, you will have noticed that our fitness equipment has not been replaced in quite some time (in some cases nearly 20 years!). A few years ago, we looked at replacing much of the equipment but the project lost momentum and did not go ahead at that time. We are back on track and mov-ing ahead with this project! In March, the Board tasked Planning Committee with re-evaluating the short- and long-term planning goals for the fitness center and its equipment, recommending equipment that offers current technology applicable to seniors and to design a strategy for systematically updating our equipment in the future. A Fitness Center Focus group made up of residents keenly interested in fitness was assembled to review past work done on this project as a reference as well as gather current information and pricing. Fitness Center users were canvassed about their opinion and teams of the Focus group attended four similar active adult community fitness centers and reported back. In comparison to the other communities visited, our Fitness Center is: Smaller Equipment is older Some have staff instructors Based on information gathered from the other HOAs visited as well as several other sources, on average car-dio equipment is turned over every 5-7 years and strength equipment every 10 years or so. The Focus Group also contacted four vendors of equipment to discuss what they would suggest as the best solution for our space and budget and have received proposals back from those vendors. As part of our annual dues, MountainBrook Village sets aside reserve funds as savings towards future re-placement of assets including things like fitness equipment. We currently have $132,000 saved to replace fitness equipment showing no useful life remaining in our Reserve Study. Our recent Community Survey indicated that the Fitness Center is the second most used amenity and was the number one amenity requested to be expanded or renovated. Once the Planning Committee reviewed all of the information, they made a final recommendation to the Board at the September meeting. The Board approved the project and thanks to our Manager Mindy Schooley anticipating this and confirming prices on all three bids in advance, we were able to expedite the purchase order to avoid rising costs and supply delays. We are hoping the new equipment will be in place by the end of this year, just in time for all those New Year’s Resolutions, and the final price was under budget at $120,014. The full details of the project and equipment is posted on our website for those who would like further infor-mation.

Activity Committee - Chairperson, Marilee Pritchard Wow! A little more rain on Sunday, official end of the monsoon is Sept. 30, it will be interesting to see if we get a few more drops! The Jan Sandwich Event on 9/11 was well attended. Once again, people are so happy to be out and mingling with each other. Great entertainment and delicious little pies and ice cream. Other sites are Circlestone, Petroglyphs, Fountain Hills Fountain, Weavers Needle, Tony's Ranch, Arizona Trail, and Horns of Dilemma. There are four weekly opportunities to hike with fellow resi-dents and friends:

All Levels, Tuesday – A 7:00AM hike to Silly Mountain from Sunset Center parking lot and back, returning in time for 9:00 coffee and news at Superstition Center.

Joy, Joy, Joy

Joy swells in the hearts of the Village Voices at this time of year as we plan to bring holiday music back to MountainBrook Village on December 1, 3 and 4 at the Superstition Center. Patty Sobek, Director, and Jane Gehrt, Producer, are scurrying like Santa’s elves on December 23rd to bring a festive concert together. Each week more singers are returning to the Valley of the Sun to join them in preparation. As our last concert was nearly two years ago, we are literally bursting with song and Joy! Members are prac-ticing many carols from our existing “songbook” along with a few new crowd pleasers.

The MountainBrook Village Voices hope you will cele-brate the return of the Christmas season with us through one of our concerts. Look for more details and ticket sales in November.

Welcome Fall! We survived the very hot summer! We were finally blessed with the Monsoon Rains we have waited two years for. But, along with the abundance of rain, came the in-festation of the Blister Beatles, the Caterpillars, the Mosquitos and Flies and the Beautiful Yellow Butterflies that we had to clean off of our windshields. After talking to some old timers, I surmised that none of them have ever seen Blister Beatles be-fore in MBV. Or maybe it’s just the abundance of them this year. They were every where!

Pickleball News (Year Around) by Jill Ortiz It’s October - welcome back pickleball friends! Most of you, including myself, are looking forward to a positive, fun filled, injury free season of pickleball. Recently, I was visiting with fellow MBV player Tom Jones. Tom and his wife, Linda have lived at MBV since December 2019. Prior to retirement Tom was a PE teacher, football, and gymnastic coach to list just a few of his skills. Tom started playing pickleball about 5 years ago. Tom is encouraging to all, a very good player, and a stu-dent of the game. Tom is an advocate of practicing and drilling to improve one's game. You’ll often find Tom and Linda prac-ticing on the courts, feel free to introduce yourself and say hi to them. Tom shared with me some coaching tidbits we all need to take to heart: Forget your mistakes, remember your success; don’t dwell on those missed shots, celebrate the shots you did well. Paddles up! Low Impact Aerobics and More (Year Around) We are here year round! Come join us for low impact aerobics in the MPR from 7-8am on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Joann J. 480-983-9620 Oriental Mah Jongg (Year Around) Oriental Mah Jongg will be played every Wednesday and Sun-day at 1 p.m. in a back room of the Sunset Bldg. You don't know how to play? It's easy! We are happy to teach new play-ers. Come when you can. Call Kathy Kirkpatrick (530) 263-1188 for information. Winter and Summer.

MBV Ceramics and Glass Arts (Year Around) We welcome you to the Fired Arts Studio, Tuesday and Thurs-day, where you can explore with us lovely artistic glass medi-ums and decorative ceramic art. Bring your bottles, like a wine and/or beer bottle, and have them melted into one of our patterned molds, maybe a chevron, a swirl, or a holiday theme. Make a pendant(s), create one of a kind bowl or plate with glass paints or frit, drape a ceramic vase with cool crystals and beautiful glazes... Have fun. There will be Teachers available every session for those who want instructions. Our hours are 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. Class fee is $5 a month which covers the care of the molds, paints, and tools. Studio Orientation tours will begin in December. Call 602-882-5104 or email [email protected] with any questions. Pottery Club (Year Around) Check out the lighted windows of the Fired Arts Center on the way to the pool or fitness facility. All of the displayed art has been made by your friends and neighbors. Our club’s mission is to promote and support MBV residents in the pursuit of artistic expression in the art and craft of pottery. Volunteer instructors conduct half-day introductory, intermediate and advanced clas-ses, in an open, welcoming environment. Pottery Club hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Stop by and take a tour of the studio to see if pottery is something you would like to try. If you would like additional information, please call Loretta Milton and leave a mes-sage at 703-785-6949. Library Notes (Year Around) Ruth Parker Are you a Gamer?? And to people our age that refers to someone who sits with friends at a table with cards or game pieces in hand not in front of a computer with an electronic controller in hand. If you are, you’re in luck in the library. There are at least 25 different games on the shelves for all ages and interests. From the age-old Monopoly to Balderdash, Shipwrecked, Back Gammon, Chess, Dominoes, and various card games to name a few. You may have noticed that some genres you’re trying to find aren’t where they used to be. To help in your hunt there is a brand-new map posted on the side of the sports shelves. So, if it’s games or books you’ve a desire for, come on down, the library has them.

Supper Club (Seasonal) Wow! It was almost like the old days - 8 friends, old and new - sit-ting at the table together enjoying conversation and good food to-gether. NAOS-NATURAL AREAS OPEN SPACE Many of our areas in MountainBrook are deemed Natural Area Open Space or NAOS. The NAOS areas are especial-ly prevalent in back of homes in Eagle Rock, Shadow Ridge I and II, and mostly surrounds the Hidden Canyon area. Various smaller NAOS areas are sprinkled throughout MountainBrook. NAOS areas are not “maintained”. Weeds are left as native plants, trees are allowed to grow naturally, and there is no irrigation to the plants. Mistletoe is not removed; it is spread by birds and it will be a continu-al part of nature. It produces berries that the birds adore. Trees will not be pruned or thinned. Broken branches are only removed if they are blocking washes and impeding water flow or causing damage to homeowner’s property.

One of our larger NAOS areas is on

the corner of Mountain Vista

Washes and Common Areas Our washes are mostly NAOS land and harbor a vast array of plants and animals. Washes are also used to collect and redirect rainwater. Places where water accumulates naturally attracts wildlife and plant life. We try to keep our NAOS areas and washes as natural as possible. On occasion, we will remove dry grasses and dead wood that could pose a fire hazard. Unless presenting a drainage hazard, weeds are left in washes. Trees and plant life on the slopes are important to slope stability. Common Areas are those that are regularly maintained. Most of the washes in back of homes and many areas along MBV streets are considered to be in the Common Area. Weeds are removed, trees are pruned, cactus are trimmed, etc.
