CASE SUMMARY
Emerald Group Publishing has a strong global publishing programme across business and management subjects, with a
range of products including their books series. Quantitatively demonstrating the impact of books has, in the past, proved
particularly challenging and laborious. With Thomson Reuters’ InCites™, Emerald now have the tools to quickly analyse both
the citation impact and influence of their products in traditional and new ways.
BACKGROUND
Founded in 1967, Emerald today manages a range of digital products, a portfolio of nearly 300 journals, more than 2,500
books and over 450 teaching cases.
More than 3,000 Emerald articles are downloaded every hour of every day. The network of contributors includes over
100,000 advisers, authors and editors. Globally, Emerald has an extraordinary reach with 12 offices worldwide and more
than 4,000 customers in over 120 countries.
BUSINESS ISSUE
InCites™ offers Emerald an easy way to benchmark and analyze its performance across multiple subject domains, using a
variety of indicators such as numbers of documents in the Web of Science™ Core Collection, total times cited, and indicators
such as the category normalized citation impact. The latter provides a convenient measure of actual citation impact com-
pared to that expected and allows Emerald to rank its performance across different subject domains.
“Like any global publisher with an extensive publication list of books, journals and other products, it’s important to understand
both our subject coverage and our impact,” says Mark Gerdes, Analyst at Emerald Group Publishing. “InCites is one of the
key tools that we are using to help us achieve this as it presents a straightforward and powerful set of analytica l tools for
investigating the impact of our products.”
Identifying areas with a significant impact is just a starting point for further analyses. “InCites lets us map where our
contributions in top subject areas come from, and how much of that content comes from authors at the top cited institutions.
This is vital information for positioning our products, driving marketing, and demonstrating and developing our impact in
those key fields,” says Gerdes.

One key focus of Emerald is business and management publishing, subject areas where they have a very significant impact.
InCites™ showed that Emerald was publishing content from all top 200 of the world’s most cited organizations and
institutions in these two subjects.
Within books, for the top 10 key related subjects, they were publishing material from 120 of the top 200 institutions.

“It was fantastic to see these results,” says Gerdes, “a firm demonstration that Emerald is attracting and publishing the top
authors from the world’s leading institutions.”
Emerald is not just a publisher of journals, their books series are an important component of their publishing portfolio and an
understanding of their performance and impact is also vital. Inclusion of the Books Citation Index in the Web of Science™
Core Collection dataset unpinning InCites enables analysis of the impact of their book chapters and to map their share of
those leading institutions in business and management. The results showed that authors from two thirds of the top 100
institutions have contributed chapters to Emerald’s book series.
“Additionally, we didn’t just find that they were publishing with Emerald, we found that in many cases the majority of citations
received were to our chapters, further demonstrating our impact.” The analysis also identified those institutions not current ly
publishing with Emerald, opening the door to future opportunities in authorship and collaboration. “Being able to pivot and
download analyses makes it possible to quickly view the data in different ways and further extend our analyses,” says
Gerdes. InCites™ allows analyses to be refocused on people, regions, organizations, re-search areas, and publications to
better understand impact.

InCites™ is a citation impact analysis package for people, organizations, regions, research areas, and publications. InCites
uses the authoritative and high quality Web of Science™ Core Collection dataset with data from 1980 to the present day.
InCites™ allows publishers, academic societies and associations, organizations, and businesses to analyze and benchmark
their impact and that of their peer and competitors across a comprehensive range of indicators (including Journal Impact
Factors) and benchmarks.
The analysis tools in InCites™ are finding a variety of uses at Emerald Group Publishing, particularly for institutional usage
and identifying their authorship and impact, along with measuring the performance of their titles and uncovering what drives

Emerald are already using analyses to develop marketing message to promote their impact, for driving regional publications
and product strategies, and improving the content and influence of their journals, books, and other products.
“We’ve previously relied on the Web of Science™ and other resources to provide citation data for additional analysis, but
with the straightforward tools in InCites, we can widen our teams’ access to this key information,” says Gerdes.
CONCLUSION
Academic publishing continues to be a competitive global business, with more journals and more au-thors. Demonstrating
and improving impact is key to Emerald Group Publishing’s continued success and growth, and to maintain their reputation
as a leading and distinctive publisher. InCites™ is one of the key tools helping them to achieve these goals.
