Advances in Accounting Education: Teaching and Curriculum InnovationsAdvances in Accounting Education: Teaching and Curriculum Innovations, Volume 15

    Editors

Dorothy FeldmannBentley University, Waltham, MA, USA

Timothy RupertNortheastern University, Boston, MA, USA

SynopsisAdvances in Accounting Education: Teaching and Curriculum Innovations publishes both non-empirical and empirical articles dealing with accounting pedagogy. All articles explain how teaching methods or curricula/programs can be improved. Non-empirical papers are academically rigorous, and specifically discuss the institutional context of a course or program, as well as any relevant tradeoffs or policy issues. Empirical reports exhibit sound research design and execution, and develop a thorough motivation and literature review, including references from outside the accounting field, where appropriate. Volume 15 examines the following topics: ways to incorporate self-directed learning in managerial accounting courses, the intent of students to major in accounting during recessionary periods; and incorporating core competencies in the accounting curriculum. Volume 15 also includes a special section that examines efforts to integrate accounting with other core business disciplines in the curriculum. This section includes the experiences of two universities that successfully integrated introductory accounting material with other business courses.

Signs that Markets are Coming BackResearch in Finance, Volume 30

    Editor

John KensingerUniversity of North Texas, USA

SynopsisThe volume includes two contributions on hedge funds. One evaluates the performance of hedge funds in market environments that are conducive to active management versus environments that are not. The other provides an empirical study of the market timing skills of hedge fund managers. Additionally, we have two contributions in the area of options. One extends the real options approach to options in which the underlying assets are information items such as seismic databases (rather than tangible real assets), opening the way for a complete analysis of investments along the so-called Virtual Value Chain. Another offers a significant improvement in the estimation of implied volatility by developing a least-squared-error approach to the problem of smiles and frowns. We also have an analysis of whether a firms founders can create an artificial dividend without adversely affecting the value of the firm to other investors. From Canada, we have an empirical analysis of the current uneasy case for adding real estate investments to a portfolio. From Spain is an empirical analysis of whether earnings management activities by companies lead to an increase in qualified audit reports.

Performance Measurement and Management Control Behavioral Implications and Human ActionsStudies in Managerial and Financial Accounting, Volume 28

    Editors

    Antonio DavilaUniversity of Navarra, Spain

    Marc J. EpsteinRice University, USA

    Jean-Franois ManzoniINSEAD, Spain

SynopsisThis new volume contains selected papers that were presented at the 2013 conference on performance measurement and management control focusing on behavioral implications and human actions associated with the use of performance measurement and management control systems. These systems do not work in a vacuum, rather they guide and motivate how people in organizations and markets behave. The intersection between management tools and human action is a central aspect in these research fields. Yet, multiple variables impact the result of certain designs on the behavior of people. The volume presents issues such as national culture, organizational culture, strategy, technology, partnerships and joint ventures, and the presence of other management systems.

The editors hope this book will continue the search for additional understanding and development in performance measurement and management control, and provide guidance for both academic researchers and managers as they work toward improving organizations.

    Editors

Georgios P. KouretasAthens University of Economics and Business

    Athanasios P. PapadopoulosUniversity of Crete

SynopsisThis volume contains new important research on banking institutions and performance in transition economies, economic growth and inequality and exchange rate economics and international finance. Topics include exchange rate exposure of firms, the relationship between monetary policy and house price shocks, economic interdependence of south-eastern European countries, Chinas exchange rate policy and economic growth, inequality and financial sector. Among the questions answered are: Is exchange rate volatility a significant determinant of average firm level exposure? Can we identify shocks that can be interpreted as loose monetary shocks, low inflation shocks, banks credit shocks and house price shocks? What are the main factors driving the relationship between banks and companies in transition economies? Does it matter for forecasting GDP growth whether the economy is in tranquil times or during a period of turbulence? Has economic growth played any role in reducing inequality in South Africa? Are global bilateral investment holdings characterized by strong persistence? And finally, Is Chinas international competitiveness fluctuates in consistency with PPP equilibrium?

The Law and Economics of Class ActionsResearch in Law and Economics, Volume 26

    Editor

James LangenfeldLoyola University of Chicago, USA

SynopsisLegal and economic analyses overlap and interact in many areas. Recent U.S. Supreme Court and lower court decisions on class action lawsuits clearly focus on the critical role that economic analysis plays in determining the outcome of class actions.

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. v. Dukes and Comcast Corp. v. Behrend have made national headlines, raising the bar in class certification for showing common impact and preponderance through expert testimony. These decisions have turned on the adequacy of the analyses put forth by expert economists, finding the analyses of the plaintiffs economists to be insufficient. The decisions will have significant implications for use of expert testifiers in class certification and in estimation of monetary damages, presenting challenges to both attorneys and economists in antitrust and other class actions.

This book focuses on the changing landscape of class action law and its interaction with the economic analysis of key issues in class actions. Articles examine the elements of class action law from diverse viewpoints, featuring defendant and plaintiff perspectives, concerning domestic and international law, and written by lawyers and economists.

Early Childhood and Special EducationAdvances in Early Education And Day Care, Volume 18

    Editors

John A. SutterbyThe University of Texas at Brownsville, USA

Eva NwokahOur Lady of the Lake University, San Antonio, TX, USA

SynopsisSome chapters focus on interventions for the child, and others on training for the parents and professionals. The combination of current information and evidence contained in these chapters includes an emphasis on the importance of supporting families with different linguistic and cultural backgrounds, and indicates how team support (including families as part of the team) is crucial for these children. Parents of children with special needs may have their own challenges and this may create an additional need for support and resources for the family and the professional. The dynamic interaction between provider or teacher, theoretical approaches and curriculum used, and the childs individual needs is what maximizes the impact of any intervention. The information is useful for early care and preschool teachers, early intervention providers, therapists, psychologists and administrators.

    Editors

Rowhea ElmeskyUniversity of St. Louis, USA

Carol Camp YeakeyWashington University of St Louis, MO, USA

SynopsisThe first part of the book will provide the historical context of Egypt prior to the January 25th revolution with emphasis on demographics, culture, religion, governance structure, and the education system (both the private and public sector). The second section will focus intensely upon the January 25th Egyptian Revolution, the subsequent yet smaller revolutions that emerged in the months afterwards, and the first democratic elections. Attention will be given to broadly understanding the Arab Springs beginnings and how Egypt joined the ranks. The third and final section will discuss the impact that the Arab Spring has had on Egypt both currently and moving into the future. Authors will consider what the new Egypt entails and how this may positively impact the quality of an education system that has traditionally been designed for the social reproduction of the extreme inequities of the rich and poor.

The Obama Administration and Educational ReformAdvances in Education in Diverse Communities: Research, Policy and Praxis, Volume 11

    Editor

    Eboni M. Zamani-GallaherAlcorn State University

SynopsisArguably, since the day he was elected, President Barack Obama met great anticipation from scores of Americans regarding the forward course our nation desired economically, socially, and educationally. The promise of progress and social mobility that millions of U.S. families hope to attain can be unlocked through the educational enterprise. Unfortunately, while the United States educates all children, all children do not receive the same education. Hence, prospects for a better future for many are thwarted from the onset given the inequities in P-12 education. Furthermore, the pendulum is swinging as higher learning is becoming increasingly obstructed for many Americans across income brackets, gender, racial/ethnic backgrounds, abilities, and geographic areas.

Comparative Science: Integrating Theory, Method and Scope Across DisciplinesInternational Perspectives on Education and Society, Volume 26

    Editors

    Nikolay PopovSofia University, Bulgaria

Alexander W. WisemanLehigh University, Bethlehem, PA, USA

SynopsisExamining various social science phenomena and comparative studies fields allows for a holistic approach to understanding rather than trying to achieve understanding as a conglomeration of isolated phenomena. This volume aims to build a conceptual infrastructure for comparative research. To do this, the capacity for understanding and identifying the comparative method in various fields is necessary. The volume also builds an interdisciplinary base for continued awareness, development and application of comparative studies. Original chapter manuscripts based on papers from the inaugural session of the International Symposium of Comparative Sciences, held in Sofia, Bulgaria (October 2013) are included. Chapters include case studies, regional survey data, cross-national comparisons and other evidence to analyze the complex combination of drivers and characteristics of comparative sciences in all disciplines and fields. The intent is to have a combination of theory-driven syntheses of current scholarship, reports of new empirical research, and critical discussions of major topics related to the practice and study of comparative science.

Enterprising Places: Leadership and Governance NetworksContemporary Issues in Entrepreneurship Research, Volume 3

    Editors

Prof. Joyce LiddleAix-Marseilles University, Aix En Provence, France

Dr Lee PugalisNorthumbria University, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, UK

Prof. John ShuttHarris Research Partnership, Ltd and Newcastle University, UK

SynopsisMobilising an enterprise surge in specific places has become the leitmotif of contemporary spatial interventions and state-sponsored strategies. Global economic shocks, rising demands for welfare services and public sector austerity measures are signifiers of the complex processes that have heightened public policy imperatives associated with enabling enterprise. Consequently, the search for entrepreneurial synergies has intensified the need for devising mechanisms for delivering broader social, cultural, environmental, economic and political objectives. However, developing collaborative leadership necessary to mobilise diverse networks of actors that can implement strategies sensitive to the plurality of place is not a straightforward task: negotiating the generation of entrepreneurial synergies in places calls for alternative conceptual tools, and complementary policies. Using theoretical explanations and empirical analysis, the chapters critically examine the entrepreneurial turn of public policy and urban studies.

She offers a multidisciplinary approach to considering social identity intersectionalities at work. This is a core stand-alone book for organizational communication, business/management, research methods, classes of advanced undergraduate and graduate students , as well as a font of practical advice for organizations managers. Pushing the Boundaries: Multiteam Systems in Research and PracticeResearch on Managing Groups and Teams, Volume 16

    Editors

Prof. Eduardo SalasCornell University, Ithaca, NY,USA

Dr Marissa ShufflerUniversity of Central Florida, Orlando, FL, USA

Dr Ramn RicoUniversity of Central Florida, Orlando, FL, USA

SynopsisThe latest volume of Research in Managing Groups and Teams focuses on multiteam systems (MTSs), or systems of interdependent teams working toward a shared goal. MTSs have become a growing area of interest in organizational research, primarily due to their growing prominence in organizational settings. However, while MTS implementation is rampant in the field, the majority of research to date has been conducted in laboratory settings, which may not always effectively address the rapidly changing needs of field MTSs. This book brings current, real world MTS issues and problems to the forefront while highlighting existing research across disciplines which may help to address these issues. The volume takes a unique approach in addressing the practical and research needs of understanding multiteam systems by highlighting real world issues via case studies presented by practitioners. Themes highlighted in terms of both practical issues and future research needs include the development and composition of MTSs, critical processes such as leadership and communication, and outcomes of both successful and unsuccessful MTSs.

SynopsisThe organizational design of the Multinational Corporation (MNC) was a vibrant area of research in the field of International Business and Management during the 1970-1990s. However, since then this research has largely faded from our scholarship. This volume of AIM is designed to spark new life into the research on the organizational design of the MNC.

The world and environmental forces has changed substantially in the last decades placing new constrains on the MNCs. External shocks have increased and MNCs need to learn how to live with this increased market volatility. Integrating value chains makes MNCs more efficient but also vulnerable. The relentless forces of competition and globalization are forcing MNCs to divide their activities and reach for foreign inputs, markets and partners. By dividing their value chain into discrete pieces some to be performed in-house, while others are outsourced to partner organizations MNCs hope to reduce overall costs and risks, while also reaping the benefits of ideas from contractors or alliance partners worldwide. These challenges call for new research on the organizational design of the MNC. It is our intention with this AIM volume to motivate new research on the proper organizational design mechanisms of MNCs as of today.

Evaluating Companies for Mergers and AcquisitionsInternational Business and Management, Volume 30

    Editor

    Pervez GhauriKings College, London

    Ibne HassanKings College, London

SynopsisMergers and acquisitions are one of the cornerstones of firm growth, and have attracted considerable attention from the scholarly research community in the last three decades. Several studies have concluded that M&A transactions do not result in better performance, and can even erode the acquiring firms shareholder value to produce highly volatile market returns. Others have identified reasons for such inefficiencies. However, very little attention has been given to business evaluation process as an influencing factor.

This thirtieth volume in the acclaimed International Business & Management series investigates how the processes involved in the evaluation of a target firm influence the outcome of M&As. Co-authored by international business expert Pervez Ghauri, it highlights the processes that should be followed to evaluate potential acquisition targets, and how a proper evaluation can influence the M&A performance. It encourages greater reliance on the strength and independence of the business evaluation process, and brings clarity in understanding the relationship between different components of business evaluation.

Management And Leadership InnovationsAdvances in Librarianship, Volume 38

    Editors

    Anne Woodsworth

    W. David Penniman

SynopsisManagement and Leadership Innovations, vol. 38 of Advances in Librarianship presents techniques, cases and theoretical papers on how libraries and other non-profit organizations can achieve sustainability through application of the UNs Agenda 21, how to interview candidates through non-traditional and interactive processes to assess soft skills needed to join a team, how a model was developed to ensure successful school libraries, and how academic libraries can provide leadership in sustaining and preserving their surrounding communities history and culture. It also offers chapters on the utility of gossip in management, how to provide mindful leadership within an organization, and how to identify and manage levels of stress and burnout. The volume presents a case study of how a library altered the skill sets of subject librarians to function in teams using a matrix approach in order to better serve clients. Another innovation is represented by a chapter on staff development and service through participation in a community of practice. Also included is a chapter on service design a relatively new concept of service design which is critical in improving user/customer satisfaction and patronage.

New Directions in Childrens and Adolescents Information Behavior ResearchLibrary and Information Science, Volume 9

    Editors

    Dania BilalUniversity of Tennessee, USA

    Jamshid BeheshtiMcGill University, Canada

SynopsisRecent research shows that children and adolescents encounter challenges and obstacles in searching for information, retrieving relevant results and difficulty in interpreting results in various information environments. A recent paradigm shift points to the changed information behavior of the new generation of users, born after the advent of the Web. Technologically savvy, they skim and surf for information, multi-task, search collaboratively and share information on social networks.

The New Directions in Childrens and Adolescents Information Behavior Research comprises innovative research in three main themes. These are: information behavior of various age groups; toddlers and preschoolers, elementary school students, early adolescents, and adolescents; special populations including ethnic minorities, indigenous, and users with disabilities; research and reflections on designing systems that help the new generation cope with a complex knowledge society.

Vol 9 is aimed directly at researchers, aware of the challenges facing the new generation but have not had the opportunity to explore the issues thoroughly. It is also of interest to Information professionals, librarians, educators, Web designers, and human-computer interaction researchers.

Synopsis... the German word for experience Erlebnis the experience of the life, to live through something underpins this book: making visible scholarly opportunities for richer and deeper contextualizations and examinations of the lived-world experiences of people in everyday contexts as they be, do and become (Ross Todd, Preface)Information experience is a burgeoning area of research and still unfolding as an explicit research and practice theme. This book is therefore very timely as it distils the reflections of researchers and practitioners from various disciplines, with interests ranging across information, knowledge, user experience, design and education. They cast a fresh analytical eye on information experience, whilst approaching the idea from diverse perspectives.Information Experience brings together current thinking about the idea of information experience to help form discourse around it and establish a conceptual foundation for taking the idea forward. It therefore, provides a number of theoretical lenses for examining peoples information worlds in more holistic and dynamic ways. (Ross, Preface).

Followership: What is it and why do people follow?Editors

    Laurent LapierreUniversity of Ottawa, Canada

Melissa K. CarstenWinthrop University, Rock Hill, SC, USA

SynopsisThis book provides a collection of new insights on the increasingly popular topic of Followership. Leadership has been written about and studied for centuries, more often than not addressing how those in leadership roles influence their followers. This represents a very leader-centric view of the leadership phenomenon, where followers are considered as passive recipients of leaders influence. However, peoples attempts to exercise leadership cannot be successful if there are no other people who recognize and support their leadership. In other words, effective leadership cannot exist without some form of followership. The book offers a collection of chapters written by thought leaders on the topic of followership. Together, they provide answers to two fundamental questions: What is followership, and why do people follow? They elucidate how answers to these questions can inform management theory, practice, and education.

Opera North: Historical and Dramaturgical Perspectives on Opera StudiesEditor

    Kara McKechnieUniversity of Leeds, UK

SynopsisThis illustrated study is a resource for opera scholars, opera workers and opera lovers. It explores the field of opera studies in three ways:

Through history: Opera North is presented through a historical lens within the UK operatic landscape. The chapter amalgamates extensive archival resources and interview material, including many illustrations from its 35 year history.

Through ethnography: the day-to-day workplace behaviour of an opera company is explored in its rehearsal and performance spaces, and the production cycle from first music rehearsal to first night is traced through detailed observation and photographic records.

Through production analysis: selected productions of recent years are given a dramaturgical focus, with aspects of conceptual, textual and visual analysis.

Opera North was founded as English National Opera North in 1978. It became independent from English National Opera in 1981 and holds a reputation for fostering artistic talent, for adventurous programming choices and for high production values.

This study explores universal issues relating to the production of opera, based on the very specific example of our National Opera Company in the North.

Shopper Marketing and the Role of In-Store MarketingReview of Marketing Research, Volume 11

    Editors

    Dhruv GrewalBabson College

    Anne L. RoggeveenBabson College

SynopsisThis volume of Review of Marketing Research (RMR) focuses on Shopper Marketing: Role of In-Store Marketing. The chapters draw from academic research as well as collaborations with major retailers and industry practitioners. Over the past several decades there has been research into how marketing actions influence how shoppers respond to offers. Yet, with the ever-shifting landscape due to influences such as mobile devices, the internet, and social media, there is an increasing need to understand how marketing actions influence shoppers in their path to purchase. Although there are many points along the path to purchase which are important to understand, this edition of RMR is devoted to the topic of in-store marketing actions to understand their impact on shopper reactions to offers. The chapters highlight new technologies (e.g., mobile, digital displays) and information aids (e.g., nutrition scores, floor signage) being used by leading retailers to influence the path to purchase. In addition, new research technologies (e.g., eye-tracking, heat maps, in-store experiments) and models that are being used to assess the effectiveness of the path to purchase tactics are discussed.

Organisational Transformation and Scientific Change: The impact of institutional restructuring on universities and intellectual innovationResearch in the Sociology of Organizations, Volume 42

    Editors

    Richard WhitleyUniversity of Manchester, UK

Jochen GlserZentrum Technik und Gesellschaft, Germany

SynopsisRecent changes to the funding and governance of higher education and scientific research systems are affecting both the organisation of the sciences and the nature of universities as strategic actors in many countries. Transforming the organisational contexts in which research is carried out has altered the dynamics of scientific change through shifts in the authority relations that influence the development and implementation of organisational strategies.

The first part of this book deals with the transformation of universities as strategic organisational actors in some cases creating them as such while the second shows how governance and authority shifts are affecting the kinds of research goals being pursued by academics in different public science systems. By bringing together the analysis of organisational change in universities with that of how institutional changes are affecting intellectual innovation in different fields, this volume integrates work in the sociology of organisations, science policy, higher education studies, innovation research and the sociology of science. It is therefore of interest to a wide academic and policy development audience in many countries.

Emotions and the Organizational FabricResearch on Emotion in Organizations, Volume 10

    Editors

Charmine E.J. HrtelThe University of Queensland, Australia

Neal M. AshkanasyThe University of Queensland, Australia

Wilfred J. ZerbeMemorial University of Newfoundland, Canada

SynopsisEmotion in an organization is much more than a phenomenon experienced solely by its members it is a deeply embedded component of the organizational fabric. Consistent with this idea, chapters in this volume deal with emotion at all levels of organizing: at the individual level, expressed in interpersonal exchanges and in groups, and across the organization as a whole. They represent a selection of papers from the Eighth International Conference on Emotion in Organizations, held in July 2012 in Helsinki, Finland; plus a selection of invited chapters. Chapters thus represent cutting-edge articles by leading and emerging scholars of emotion in organizations from around the world. Specific topics include creation of positively deviant business-to-business services, leader effectiveness and emotions in crisis situations, gender and role conflict among managers, developing shared wellbeing in communal settings, the nature of emotional labor across levels, managing workplace aggression, building customer passion, developing mindfulness, emergence of expectations, emotionalizing institutional theory, bullying as a form of institutional control, and how employees project competence.

Gendered Perspectives on Conflict and Violence, Part BAdvances in Gender Research, Volume 18

    Editors

    Vasilikie DemosIndiana University Southeast, USA

Marcia Texler SegalIndiana University Southeast, USA

SynopsisA global discourse regarding gender and violence is emerging as feminists, media experts, and social scientists consider the place of gender in episodic acts and chronic conditions of violence. The chapters in this two-part volume offer understandings of the relationship between violence and gender from the global to the domestic level. In Part B, authors trace the history of feminist antiviolence efforts, theorize the reproduction of symbolic gender violence, and show how violence might be re-conceptualized in comparative and intersectional perspective. They show how historical, cultural and religious elements contribute to or complicate violence, how development efforts can backfire, and how actions and techniques applied by governments and NGOs can reduce or exacerbate violence. Substantive topics addressed are as varied as masculinity in U.S. prisons, child abuse in Israel, neo-Nazism in Germany and religious nationalism in India. Much of the research was done on the ground through participant observation, interaction in affected communities and interviews with change agents directly involved. Each of the chapters has theoretical as well as policy or social implications.

Building Resilient Urban CommunitiesCommunity, Environment and Disaster Risk Management, Volume 15

SynopsisHow do urban communities in Asian cities experience the impacts of urbanisation and climate change?

This book throws light on the ongoing processes of rapid urban transformation in many cities in developing countries, with particular reference to cities such as Chennai in India.

Due to increasing demands on infrastructures and urban services, cities in developing countries are often pushed to the edge of collapse even when not in times of disaster. While such cities try to implement measures to safeguard the well-being of their citizens, looming impacts of climate change such as increasingly frequent and intense natural hazards pose new and additional challenges to their urban communities.

This book connects critical issues relating to the general functioning of cities with climate-related disasters with the concept of resilience. Furthermore, this research takes a pro-solution stance, and demonstrates that individuals can form collective power to deliver added value before, during and after a disaster. The concept of resilience is applied to determine whether an urban community would be affected or damaged during a climate-related disaster, and to what extent.

European Public Leadership in Crisis?Critical Perspectives on International Public Sector Management, Volume 3

    Editors

    Joyce LiddleTeesside University, Middlesbrough, UK

John DiamondEdge Hill University, Ormskirk, UK

SynopsisDespite different legal and constitutional arrangements, in many states across Europe, public leaders are forging new collaborative relationships with non-state and civic actors to seek innovative ways of providing public services. Leadership varies between situations and contexts, but is still seen as central to good governance and includes individuals who will promote institutional adaptations in the public interest. There are almost as many definitions of leadership as there are writers on the subject, as it is a complex social phenomenon, lacking clear boundaries.

This volume questions what are the changing dynamics of public leadership across different European settings? Anglo-American models of leadership have dominated and influenced current thinking. Chapters in this volume highlight emergent thinking and discussions on the strengths and weaknesses of current understandings and knowledge. Authors investigate the tensions between Anglo-American and economic focused models of leadership and emergent policy and management paradigms that may challenge received wisdom.
