Research in FinanceResearch in Finance, Volume 29

Editor

John W. KensingerNorth Texas University, Denton, TX, USA

SynopsisThe theme of Research in Finance vol. 29 is “Dealing with Crisis and Regulation.” The volume begins with a examination of the European financial crisis, and possible solutions. Next is a look (using advanced empirical methods) at audit qualifications for accounting firms in Spain. Then the international aspect of the volume shifts to business strategies for competition between two major companies that dominate their industry in Mexico. The empirical analysis then shifts to a long-range (up to 50 years) look at anomalies in the real return on corporate equity compared with the realized returns from the real assets of corporations. This look at the value of real assets compared with financial assets is complemented by a look at the stabilizing influence of the recently expanding commodity futures trading in oil and gold. Then our attention shifts to regulation and some unintended consequences. Over the past ten years in the United States we have seen a substantial increase in going private transactions, accompanied by a substantial decline in initial public offerings. The next chapter considers whether this is simply a response to the regulatory burdens imposed by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, or a response to other more deeply underlying factors in the financial markets. Then the regulatory examination shifts to the electric power grid, and some unintended consequences of the new regulations requiring retail utilities to buy all the power produced by wind and solar generators linked to their grid. The essence of the problem is that wind generators do not produce power at a consistent level, so conventional generators must be available to pick up the slack when the wind is not blowing strongly. The conventional generating plants must be ready to spool up quickly when needed. Then the conventional generating plants must be ready to spool down quickly when the wind generators begin producing strongly. Frequent spooling up and down places significant stress upon the conventional generators, increasing maintenance costs while at the same time reducing revenues.

Understanding A Decade of Academic Research Post-Enron, Worldcom, and Sarbanes-OxleyStudies in the Development of Accounting Thought, Volume 15

Editors

Professor Stephen R. MoehrleUniversity of Missouri, St Louis, MO, USA

Jennifer Reynolds MoehrleUniversity of Missouri, St Louis, MO, USA

SynopsisThe Enron and WorldCom scandals and other less high profile scandals ushered in several regulatory overhauls including those provided for under the law widely known as Sarbanes-Oxley. Indeed, this was the most dynamic period save possibly the 1930s in terms of regulatory reforms to the accounting and financial reporting environment. This monograph summarizes and synthesize a decade of academic research to develop an evolving dominant explanation around these myriad changes. The overarching themes and topics in the literature that form the paradigm for this monograph include the evolving accounting and reporting model in the US and internationally, the individual accounting pronouncements that support the evolving model, the scandals themselves, and the public and private sector responses to those scandals.

The Governance of Risk Developments in Corporate Governance and Responsibility, Volume 5

Editors

Guler ArasYildiz Technical University, Turkey

David CrowtherDe Montfort University, UK

SynopsisThe relationship between economic or social or political activity and risk is widely recognised at a societal level, a market level and a business level, and equally widely discussed. The relationship between governance and risk at all of these levels is equally widely recognised but much less widely discussed. But the consequences of poor governance in this arena have been exposed to all in the recent financial and economic crisis as financial institutions and even countries have collapsed or come close to collapsing. The relationship between governance and risk is particularly important in the global environment in which we operate and needs to be more fully discussed and theorised. This book is designed to address important aspects of this topic and set it within the context of the global business and societal environment.

Understanding the Principalship: An International Guide to Principal PreparationAdvances in Educational Administration, Volume 19

Editors

Charles L. SlaterCalifornia State University, CA, USA

Sarah W. NelsonTexas State University – San Marcos, TX, USA

SynopsisThis volume originates from the International Study of Principal Preparation (ISPP), a collaborative project representing nearly a decade of research on principal preparation in countries throughout the world. Through focused stages of research, the ISPP systematically examined the kinds of preparation available to principals and how this preparation serves principals in their first years in the post. The authors attend to dynamic changes that are affecting the way principals work. Demographic shifts, globalization, and emerging technologies are transforming the world and the role of educational leaders. Economic and political forces are causing waves of migration from one country to another. Even within the same country, changes in labour markets and political turmoil are pushing people into new communities. The authors provide extensive reviews of literature on educational administrator preparation and also offer a perspective on local history and culture. They develop an intercultural approach to understanding the principalship and to highlight marginalized and underrepresented groups.

Black Male Teachers: Diversifying the United States’ Teacher WorkforceAdvances in Race and Ethnicity in Education, Volume 1

Editors

Chance W. LewisThe University of North Carolina at Charlotte, NC, USA

Ivory ToldsonHoward University, DC, USA

SynopsisRecently, US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan suggested that placing Black men in the classroom as teachers is a critical need in the American educational system. Many education policymakers and researchers falsely believe that Black male teachers have a primary responsibility to foster the social development of Black male students. However, increasing the presence of Black male teachers improves the diversity of the profession and should be viewed as a benefit to the system, as they provide quality services to all students regardless of race and/or gender. This edited volume offers sound suggestions for advancing diversity in the teaching profession. It provides teacher education programs with needed training materials to accommodate Black male students, and school district administrators and leaders with information to help recruit and retain Black male teachers. Each chapter will feature policy and practice recommendations and a case example to spur action and increase opportunities for discussion.

Emotion in Schools: Understanding How the Hidden Curriculum Influences Relationships, Leadership, Teaching, and LearningAdvances in Research on Teaching, Volume 18

Editors

Melissa NewberryBrigham Young University, UT, USA

Andrea GallantDeakin University, Australia

Philip RileyMonash University, Australia

SynopsisThis volume reports the history, developments, applications and possible future directions of relational and emotion-focused school research from North America, Asia-Pacific and Europe. Chapters frame the key debates in the research literature while adding the unique perspective of experts from the field, before honing in on the school: the administration context, teacher context and student context. The authors explore the contests within the field, including psychological and socio-cultural knowledges, individual and collectives, emotions as inputs/outcomes, and the false binary of emotions and rational thought. The positive and negative products of emotions and emotion work are outlined and their effects on relationships and school functioning are discussed. The book provides readers with new insights into the hidden curriculum. It offers new ways of working with emotion in a variety of relationships for positive outcomes: the selection and induction of teachers; the role of emotions in leading; emotional and emotion learning; and, the inter-relationship between emotions, school culture, classroom and staffroom dynamics.

Teacher Reforms around the World: Implementations and OutcomesInternational Perspectives on Education and Society, Volume 19

Editor

Motoko AkibaFlorida State University, FL, USA

SynopsisLarge-scale reforms to improve teacher qualityhave targeted a range of teacher policies including those on recruitment into teaching, pre-service teacher education, certification, hiring and placement, induction and professional development, teacher evaluation, career structure, and compensation. Previous books on teacher reforms and policies tended to focus on descriptions of teacher policies and their backgrounds, and we have limited knowledge about how these policies were implemented and how they impacted teachers. This edited book fills this knowledge gap by focusing on implementations and outcomes of teacher reforms. The chapters are based on empirical studies that evaluated the implementations and outcomes of major teacher reforms in the countries from various parts of the world: North and South America, Asia and Oceania, Europe, Middle East and Africa. The concluding chapter discusses the lessons learned from these empirical studies and provides recommendations for policymakers around the world who are attempting to improve teacher quality and student learning through teacher reforms.

(Dis)honesty in Management: Manifestations and ConsequencesAdvanced Series in Management, Volume 10

Editors

Prof. Maaja VadiUniversity of Tartu, Estonia

Dr Tiia VissakUniversity of Tartu, Estonia

SynopsisThis volume concentrates on different forms of honesty and dishonesty in management and their consequences for managers, firms and society. These issues are related to values and behavior patterns and thus, the basis of contemporary business. Honesty can be defined as the refusal to pretend that facts of reality are other than what they are while dishonesty – including lying, stealing, cheating, distortion, concealing of important information, failing to fulfill promises, and abruptly abandoning a business relationship – presents its opposite. Based on chapters about China, Japan, USA, Israel, Germany, Sweden, Iceland and Estonia, the authors conclude that the understanding of (dis)honesty and (un)ethical behavior differs in different cultural, societal and organizational contexts. This volume also demonstrates that the fear of dishonesty may change a firm’s local and international behavior, but also managers’ attitude toward employees. For example, some firms avoid deeper relationship-oriented partnerships as they wish to control internal activities, avoid possible disinformation and prevent dishonesty/opportunism costs. As a result of distrust, they may also protect their firm-specific knowledge more, and this may result in a lower level of knowledge acquisition and reduce partnership satisfaction. Moreover, distrust may lead to more complex and costly contract negotiations and governance structures; complicate further business and lead to relationship termination or governance redesign. Still, sometimes dishonesty may pay off in the short term.

Configurational Theory and Methods in Organizational ResearchResearch in the Sociology of Organizations, Volume 38

Editors

Peer C. FissUniversity of Southern California, USA

Bart CambréAntwerp Management School, Belgium

Axel Marx University of Leuven, Belgium

SynopsisSome 20 years after the emergence of configurational theory as a key perspective in organization studies in the 1990s, this approach has yet to deliver on its promise. While we know that configurations – the relative arrangement of parts and elements matters, empirical research on configurations is just beginning to deliver on its promise.

The starting point of the edited volume is the revival and evolution of a configurational perspective on organizations, both in terms of the use of configurational set-theoretic methods such as Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) and in terms of configurational theorizing that has emerged from the use of such methods. The volume brings together a variety of scholars working with set theoretic configurational methods to apply these methods to a range of prominent fields in organization studies, ranging from organizational design, international business, and human resource practices to networks and the management of information systems. Each author or group of authors pays specific attention to assessing the potential of set-theoretical configurational methods for organization studies. Two extensive introductory chapters discuss the state of the art with regard to different set-theoretic (fuzzy set and crisp set) methods. In three response pieces leading scholars offer a reflection on the potential of set-theoretic methods for organizational analysis. The volume aims to provide both inspiration and practical advice on how to conduct configurational analysis. The chapters illustrate the breadth of organizational fields and the growing range of topics for which the configurational perspective can provides insights.

This volume vividly illustrates that the configurational approach is maturing. It aims to inspire organizational scholars to develop theories and methods that truly consider organizations as clusters of interconnected structures and practices that have to be studied as configurations.

Postcolonial SociologyPolitical Power and Social Theory, Volume 24

Editors

Professor Julian GoBoston College, MA, USA

SynopsisPostcolonial theory has enjoyed wide influence in the humanities but for social science, and in particular sociology, its implications remain elusive. This special volume brings together leading sociologists to explore the concept of “postcolonial sociology,” with brand new postcolonial readings of canonical thinkers like Karl Marx, Max Weber, Emile Durkheim and Robert Park. Chapters consider whether or not postcolonial theory is compatible with sociology; explore the relationship between knowledge and colonial power; and offer critical perspectives on the sociology of race and the implications of postcolonial theory for global sociology. They also unravel the complex entanglements of sociology, area studies, and postcolonial studies; give creative deployments of postcolonial concepts such as hybridity; and critical excavations of sociological thought in India and Mexico. In so doing this volume is among the first to craft new sociologies informed by postcolonial criticism.

Engaging with Capitalism: Cases from OceaniaResearch in Economic Anthropology, Volume 33

Editors

Fiona McCormackUniversity of Waikato, New Zealand

Kate BarclayUniversity of Technology Sydney, Australia

SynopsisFor several decades people have been grappling with how to retain the material safety and cultural richness of indigenous non-capitalist societies and economies, but also gain the health, wealth, education and life opportunities the modern capitalist world offers. This book brings together examples of attempts to forge locally appropriate versions of modernity; development that suits the aspirations and circumstances of particular groups of people. Authors question how the market economy has been variously negotiated by groups who also have other systems through which they organize their social and economic life. What has worked for these people, what has not, and why? The volume addresses how ,as a social and economic system, capitalism has been very effective in generating wealth and technological innovation, but has also been associated with great social inequity and environmental damage. Its inherent flaws have been highlighted by the escalation of ecological problems arising from growth-oriented capitalism and various economic crises, the latest being the Global Financial Crisis and its ongoing fallout.

Contradictions: Finance, Greed, and Labor Unequally PaidResearch in Political Economy, Volume 28

Editor

Paul ZarembkaState University of New York, Buffalo, USA

SynopsisThis volume analyzes two decisive factors that have become embedded in the world spread of capitalism, a shift toward dominance of the financial sector, now entailing massive greed and calling into question whether the ‘rules’ of capitalism have been broken, and of global wage differentials so deep that recognition of a labor aristocracy cannot be avoided. These chapters are supplemented by two additional showing that gold still regulates the dollar’s value, and that unpaid reproductive labor of women adversely affects labor productivity.

Analysis of finance engenders discussion of its place in value theory, posed around the rate of profit, and is more complex than often presented. Furthermore, the varying rates of profit at the firm level, not just for financials, are distributed in a manner exhibiting more frequent extreme cases than a Bell-curve would suggest. Implications for incorporation of randomization into political economy are drawn. The final chapters provide evidence that Marx was more correct than Kalecki and Minsky when arguing the lead of profits for investment, and that product innovations can mitigate problems of over-production resulting from process innovations.

21st Century Urban Race Politics: Representing Minorities as Universal InterestsResearch in Race and Ethnic Relations, Volume 18

Editor

Dr Ravi K. PerryMississippi State University, MS, USA

SynopsisThis volume offers a twenty-first-century understanding of minority representation in historically majority-Caucasian cities and draws on case studies in cities throughout the United States. It takes stock of what we know about the advantages and disadvantages of the “racialized” and “deracialized” approaches to governance and to describe a third approach, the “universalized interest approach.” The authors argue that minority elected officials, when given the power and resources to do so, often do more than represent constituent interests without acknowledging the representation of members of their racial/ethnic group in urban communities. Contributors describe how mayors of various backgrounds have sought to represent minority interests in electoral and governing contexts. With case studies from across the country, in medium-sized and large cities, and mayors of various backgrounds, the volume provides a vivid account of how different minority mayors have handled minority representation in historically majority Caucasian cities and what lessons academics and politicians can learn from them.

Editors

Nicole DoerrMount Holyoke College, MA, USA

Alice MattoniCenter for Social Movement Studies (COSMOS), European University Institute, Italy

Simon TeuneSocial Science Research Center Berlin, Germany

SynopsisThis special issue of Research in Social Movements, Conflicts and Change highlights the importance of visuals in the current study of social movements. It is indispensable reading as it introduces new analytical concepts and methodological frameworks for understanding visuals in social movements; combining cultural and political analysis in a fresh, unique and interdisciplinary way. The articles featured in this special issue examine visual expressions of social movements through case studies from across the globe; including: injustice symbols in the Egyptian uprising; contested images from anti-surveillance protests in Germany; gendered visualization of local activism; commemorative videos of activists in recent European protests; and images used in Australian movements against abortion. In the open section of the volume articles examine the work of renowned political science scholar Charles Tilly, and discuss classic concepts in social movement studies. Firstly, considering the concept of “repertoire of contention” in order to understand the use of distinct contentious performances in Latin America. Secondly, analyzing the role of “storytelling” in the construction of trust and blame in social movements.

Networks, Work, and InequalityResearch in the Sociology of Work, Volume 24

Editors

Steve McDonaldNorth Carolina State University, NC, USA

SynopsisThe importance of social relationships at work has long been recognized in the social sciences. Interest in this topic has been renewed through scholarly and popular discussions of social capital as well as recent innovations in network data collection and analysis. These developments have allowed researchers to ask a variety of new questions about the role of networks in the world of work and a multitude of approaches to answering those questions. While several monographs have been written on issues related to networks and work, none has simultaneously brought together the range of approaches used to explore this topic. Furthermore, this volume is the first to merge this focus on networks and work with a sociological perspective on inequality. Specifically, the chapters illuminate the processes by which social networks in work organizations can effectively generate, sustain and ameliorate social inequalities across individuals, firms, and occupational fields. In doing so, this volume offers valuable insights that inform researchers and policy makers alike regarding issues of workplace discrimination, diversity and innovation.

Youth Engagement: The Civic-Political Lives of Children and YouthSociological Studies of Children and Youth, Volume 16

Editors

Sandi Kawecka NengaSouthwestern University, TX, USA

Jessica K. TaftDavidson College, NC, USA

SynopsisIn recent years, civic and political institutions have stepped up their efforts to encourage youth participation: schools promote volunteerism, non-profits provide opportunities for service, local governments create youth councils, and social movement organizations discuss the need to encourage a new generation of activists.

This volume adopts a critical approach to the civic and political socialization projects which aim to transform children and youth into upstanding citizens. By synthesizing the study of young people’s civic and political socialization under the rubric of “Youth Engagement”, the interplay of the civic and the political throughout young people’s lives is considered.

Chapters critically examine the multiple and contested meanings of ideal citizenship and reveal how children and youth craft active citizenship as they encounter and respond to the various institutions and organizations designed to encourage their civic and political development.

Conceptualizing and Researching Governance in Public and Non-Profit OrganizationsStudies in Public and Non-Profit Governance, Volume 1

Editors

Luca GnanUniversity of Rome “Tor Vergata”, Italy

Alessandro HinnaUniversity of Rome “Tor Vergata”, Italy

Fabio MonteduroUniversity of Rome “Tor Vergata”, Italy

SynopsisThe first volume of the series aims to give an outline of the state of the art and the most recent research being done on public and non profit governance at the international level (with particular emphasis in Europe). The focus of the volume is mainly on the “organizational” governance that still remains “a neglected area of governance” both in the public and in the non-profit sector. The volume includes two groups of chapters aimed at examining the recent trends and the future directions of the public and non-profit governance research. One group of chapters addresses broad issues of how to conceptualize and research ‘governance’ in public and non-profit organizations. The second group of chapters deals with recent trends of research on governance mechanisms through empirical studies, including contingency and behavioural studies on public and non-profit boards, studies on participative governance mechanisms such as stakeholder involvement and citizens’ participation and studies on governance codification.

Tourism Social Media: Transformations in Identity, Community and CultureTourism Social Science Series, Volume 18

Editors

Ana María MunarCopenhagen Business School, Denmark

Szilvia GyimóthyAalborg University, Denmark

Liping CaiPurdue University, IN, USA

SynopsisThis volume addresses the transformative power of tourism social media and offers novel theoretical and methodological approaches to its academic investigation. Acknowledging the collective value creation mechanisms of new media, the authors explore how technology nurtures, augments and modifies social or commercial interactions in tourism. The book emphasizes the role of fantasy and imagination in fluid tourism experiences and critically scrutinizes contested concepts pertaining to human interaction in cyberspace, such as equality, anonymity, transparency, democratization, and publicity culture. The chapters summon insights from Media Studies, Actor-Network Theory, Communicative Action and Symbolic Convergence among others, and offer a palette of emerging methods suitable for academic enquiries of virtual worlds. The theoretical grounding, empirical evidences, and interdisciplinary analysis of the anthology expand the actual research agenda and shed light on conceptual tensions and ambiguities in the present literature. As such, Tourism Social Media: Transformations in Identity, Community and Culture contributes to increasing research reflexivity in tourism studies at large.

Accounting Control and Controlling Accounting: Interdisciplinary and Critical PerspectivesEditors

Jane BroadbentUniversity of Roehampton, London, UK

Richard LaughlinKing’s College London, University of London

SynopsisThis book advocates and illustrates the power of Interdisciplinary & Critical Perspectives, drawn from a range of social sciences, to critically analyse accounting processes & practices. Its particular focus is the extensive forms of societal regulations & requirements that are made over organisations, particularly public sector organisations, that are driven by forms of accounting, collectively described as Accounting Control in the book. These regulations & requirements are deeply resented by these public sector organisations and, as a result, all manner of resistance strategies are adopted, which are described as Controlling Accounting in the book. The book is primarily conceptual but, given the particular Interdisciplinary & Critical research approach adopted, relies heavily on drawing from empirical cases to develop the conceptual ideas. The book, therefore, analyses actual public sector Accounting Control & Controlling Accounting strategies and counter-strategies primarily, but not exclusively, from the United Kingdom, to develop the conceptual ideas. The book ends with a critical analysis of the forces & counter-forces of Accounting Control & Controlling Accounting.

Top Selling Points• The only book that covers the whole breadth of research themes in interdisciplinary and

critical perspectives accounting.

• The book can serve as a text for specialist MA and MSc programmes covering interdisciplinary and critical accounting.

• Jane Broadbent and Richard Laughlin are leading scholars in the field and have published extensively in the prestigious journals in the field.

Composing Lives in Transition: A Narrative Enquiry into the Experiences of Early School LeaversEditors

D. Jean ClandininUniversity of Alberta, Canada

Pam Steeves University of Alberta, Canada

Vera Caine University of Alberta, Canada

SynopsisComposing Lives in Transition: A Narrative Inquiry into the Experiences of Early School Leavers is structured around ten narrative accounts, each one offering glimpses into the lives of early school leavers from different backgrounds. Framed by the puzzling question of why someone would want to leave school early, the authors worked alongside youths from culturally and socially diverse backgrounds in order to understand their experiences and motivations in more depth. In doing so, however, the research team learnt that the stories are also as much about how early school leaving shaped their lives after they left education. By looking across the accounts provided in the book, paying particular attention to place, temporality and personal and social dimensions, the authors were able to identify resonant threads that enabled them to reframe a narrative reconceptualization of the phenomenon of early school leaving.

Top Selling Points• Edited by D. Jean Clandinin a leading name in the field

• Takes a unique approach to examining the unfortunate phenomena of early school leaving

•Narrative Inquiry is a fast growing area of research

• Presents recommendations for educational policy and decision makers

• This book will be of interest to graduate students, faculty, and professionals working in the areas of education, youth and cultural studies and social work.

The Handbook of Emotion, Motivation, and Self-regulation in Learning and InstructionEditors

Nathan C. HallMcGill University, Canada

Thomas GoetzUniversity of Konstanz, Germany

SynopsisThis handbook is a user-friendly resource for pre-service and new practicing teachers outlining theoretical models and empirical research findings concerning the nature and effects of emotions, motivation, and self-regulated learning for students and teachers alike. The authors provide accessible explanations, classroom-based examples and self-reflection exercises, as well as useful advice for new teachers about these psychosocial processes. They address how to measure these processes, what effects they have on personal and academic development, how they manifest in both students and teachers and how teachers can best manage and optimize these critical elements at the classroom level. It is expected that by collecting, distilling, and highlighting the real-world applicability of research on underexplored educational topics (e.g., students? emotions other than anxiety, promoting student autonomy, preventing burnout and attrition in teachers) that empirical findings can be used to improve personal and academic development in students, while also preparing new teachers for the psychological challenges of classroom instruction.

Top Selling Points•User-friendly resource outlining theoretical models and empirical research findings

• Includes accessible explanations, clear classroom-based examples, self-reflection exercises, as well as useful advice for new teachers about various aspects of these psychosocial processes

•Directly addresses the nature, effects, and instructional implications of the psychosocial processes that underlie academic success as well as personal well-being in both students and teachers.

•Written by leading experts on academic emotions.

Entrepreneurial Marketing: A Global PerspectiveEditors

Zubin SethnaUniversity of Bedfordshire, UK

Rosalind JonesPrifysgol Glyndŵr University, UK

Paul HarriganThe University of Western Australia, Australia

SynopsisMarketing and Entrepreneurship have, until quite recently, remained two quite independent scholarly domains. In 2002, Morris et al. provided a definition of Entrepreneurial Marketing as, “an integrative construct for conceptualising marketing in an era of change, complexity, chaos, contradiction, and diminishing resources, and one that will manifest itself differently as companies age and grow. It fuses key aspects of recent developments in marketing thought and practice with those in the entrepreneurship area into one comprehensive construct”.

Since then, research in this field has grown in significance across the globe. Hence, this book presents important theoretical developments with regard to research at the Entrepreneurship and Marketing interface. The editors have invited acknowledged authors working in this exciting discipline, from around the world, to divulge and present in a comprehensive format, a book which addresses critical issues for businesses, both small and large, from a global perspective. In order to address one of the reviewers’ comments about whether the chapters reflect the ‘global perspective’ the title suggests, the Editors would like to re-iterate that the research is drawn from empirical research and the study of the following in diverse country contexts: new venture creation; marketing in Small-to-Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs); renewal of existing businesses facing market challenges; internationalization; innovative cost-effective marketing strategies and practices, along with recent exploration of entrepreneurship theory and entrepreneurial behaviour of individuals and, in organisations.

Top Selling Points• This book is a timely consensus on the growing field of entrepreneurial marketing, for both

focused insight and a more holistic understanding from a remarkable range of experts in the field.

• This book brings together the past, present and future of entrepreneurial marketing answering many questions, but also posing questions for future researchers in the field.

• This book is truly international, integrating insights from experts from the US, Europe and Australasia.

Game Theory4th Edition

Editor

Guillermo OwenNaval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA, USA

SynopsisGame Theory has served as a standard text for game theory courses since the publication of the First Edition in 1968. The Fourth Edition updates several recently developed subfields. It has been enlarged by adding a new section dealing with the controversial “Monty Hall Problem”, showing how the solution can be easily obtained by using game theoretic methods; rather than those of conditional probability theory. A new chapter discusses the work of recent Noble laureates: this includes, on the one hand, Hurwicz, Maskin and Myerson’s work on mechanism design, and, on the other hand, Roth’s work on auctions and two-sided matchings.

SynopsisThe on-going globalisation and the increasing demand for flexibility in modern businesses have made transport, together with business logistics, a major functional domain. Transport growth is essentially for economic growth but is not without negative impacts. External effects such as pollution, congestion, accidents and damage to infrastructure generate considerable social costs that impose a heavy burden on society. This title addresses the need to develop new freight transport models and scientific tools to provide sound solutions that consider the wide range of internal and external impacts. The international contributions push forward frontiers in freight transport modelling and analysis.
