REMOTE LEARNING Term 2, 2020A guide for students and parents for Remote Learning for Term 2.

Emmanuel Catholic College

Message from the PrincipalI am delighted to launch our Remote Learning program available for all students in Years 7 to 10 at Emmanuel Catholic College. After the initial trial period in late Term 1 together with the many positive responses from parents, Emmanuel Catholic College is proud to be able to continue to offer a quality education program to its students in this remote format. Students in Years 11 & 12 who cannot be at school to receive face to face learning may also connect to their classroom via MS Teams.

Whilst I am of the strong opinion that the best teaching and learning environment for staff and students is in the classroom when at school, the Remote Learning program provides an excellent substitute for when this is not possible. Parents can feel very confident that each child is receiving a quality education that can be accessed from home or from wherever the internet can be accessed in real time.

Sensitive to the concern, that Remote Learning could have students being in front of a computer from 8.30am to 3.05pm, the student’s regular timetable has been adjusted so that they do not have to be in front of a computer screen for the entire school day. This has been explained in this document.

I compliment all our staff for their industrious effort to make this a reality for all our students. The work effort last term, required our teachers to be preparing the normal day’s lessons as well as preparing for Remote Learning. We are very fortunate, as a community, to have staff who genuinely want the best for our students and are prepared to do what it takes for best practice to happen. I particularly thank Dryw Edwards and Vince Bellini, together with our Remote Learning Committee who led our staff through this process.

TimetableAs we navigate our way through the challenges posed by a remote learning environment and context, a new Term Two timetable has been devised for students form Year 7 - 10. The timetable will:

• reduce the required amount of screen time down.• allow students a ‘Period 5’ to study and message

their teachers for additional support (teachers will be able to reply to all requests within 24 hours).

• incorporate physical movement and support student wellbeing.

Time/ Day Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

8.35-8.50 Pastoral Care

8.50-9.50 Period 1

9.50-10.50 Period 2

10.50-11.20 Recess

11.20-12.20 Period 3

12.20-13.20 Period 4

13.20-13.50 Lunch

13.50-14.50 Period 5 (individual student time, staff available via DM)

The remote learning timetable will appear on SEQTA for all Years 7-10 students. The main changes are summarised below.

• Periods are 60 minutes instead of 50 minutes.• There are only four contact periods during the day.• All students will have study periods on their

timetables.• Students in Year 7 no longer will have electives;

however, they will have two Fitness and a Wellbeing period. The Wellbeing period is with either their PC Teacher or House Coordinator.

• Students in Year 8 and 9 will have a Fitness period.• Students in Year 8, 9 and 10 will continue with their

Term 1 elective courses.

All the above changes will be reflected on SEQTA Learn and also available for parents on SEQTA Engage.

Just like in a normal school day, students are encouraged to get up and move between online lessons. There is built in time with teachers to enable this movement to mirror walking between classes.

Student EtiquetteBEFORE YOU START

The remote environment still needs a series of rules to be set and followed like in a physical classroom.

• Setting your learning space up is important:• get into the mindset of learning• put on your PE uniform• sit at a desk in an area with minimal distraction

Remember: Teams is an educational platform. This is not a space for social chat between students.

EMMANUEL’S CORE VALUES IN REMOTE LEARNING

We will show respect, compassion and service to others

Treat others as you would like to be treated. Respect the rights of others to participate and have an opinion. Remember that moving to this environment is going to cause some anxiety within the whole Emmanuel community, so help where you can and show compassion and understanding.

We will strive for excellence

Make the decision to be actively involved. Do some final checks before hitting send to help avoid misunderstandings - grammar, tone, typos. Do the best that you can in this learning environment - ask for help when you don’t understand, not just of the teacher but the whole team.

We will be consistent and fair

Follow the guidelines that have been given for remote learning. Learn and follow them as they will allow for consistency and fairness.

We will model Christ in our behaviour

Don’t respond to hurtful or nasty comments - block and report cyberbullying, offensive and nasty behaviour to parents or your teacher. A respectful online environment does not include trolling, bullying or harassment – let’s keep it a safe working environment. Only say online what you would normally say face to face. Be caring of everyone in the remote learning environment, your teacher, classmates, parents and yourself.

ETIQUETTE IN TEAMS

• ‘Like’ posts to signal that you have read and understood them.

• Use the Reply function rather than the New Post function for answering questions of students.

• When asking your teacher a question, tag the whole channel OR your teacher (using the @ symbol) so they are notified of the post.

• Respond to all posts from your teacher within 24 hours.

Teacher C ontactHow will my child’s teacher make contact with me to discuss an issue in their class or if my child has not been attending their lesson? A teacher will continue to call families whilst they are in the remote learning environment. All the phones that teachers will be calling from will have their caller id blocked. If they do not reach you, they will send a SEQTA Communication requesting a returned email arranging a suitable time to call you back.

WARNINGIf students are behaving inappropriately during their Remote Learning Lesson, for example, misusing their webcam, microphone or inappropriate chat, students will initially be given a warning by their teacher.

REMOVAL FROM THE ONLINE CALLIf a student continues their inappropriate behaviour, at the teacher’s discretion, a student may be removed from the Video/Audio call and the teacher will send a 'Note of Concern' to the student’s parents via SEQTA. A screenshot or record of behaviour will be made.

REMOVAL FROM THEIR CLASS TEAMIf a student tries to rejoin a call that they have been removed from, at the teacher’s discretion, they may be removed from their class team. The Head of Learning Area will be notified and Parents will be contacted. The student will be invited to rejoin their class team the following day.

LIMITED ONLINE CONNECTIVITYIf a student continually behaves inappropriately in their Remote Learning classrooms, they will be removed permanently from their class team for a period of time and their Remote Learning access will be restricted to the classwork and resources available in SEQTA. Parents will be contacted by the relevant Head of Year and a behaviour Plan put in place to support the student.

CurriculumThe School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) have provided advice regarding teaching, assessing and reporting due to Covid-19. Students and parents are encouraged to read the information provided by SCSA available at https://www.scsa.wa.edu.au/curricu-lum-assessment-covid-19/overview

Advice regarding the teaching and learning program for each subject:

For Year 11 & 12 students:

• The College will continue to provide students with opportunities to engage with coursework and meet course completion requirements under the proce-dures described in the school’s senior secondary assessment policy.

For Years 7-10 Students

• Teachers, in consultation with Heads of Learning, are in the best position to use their professional judge-ment to make decisions on aspects of the curricu-lum that are suitable for a modified teaching and learning environment (e.g. online).

AssessmentsThe College will continue to provide fair, valid and reliable assessments that are not only educative, but also provides students with opportunities to demonstrate their learning.

During the period of Remote Learning, assessments will still include:• summative tasks which will contribute towards a

student’s final aggregate, or • formative tasks which may not contribute to a final

aggregate, however will provide teachers with information regarding a student’s understanding.

Each task assigned by teachers, summative or formative, will provide opportunities for teachers to feedback to students on their learning, either individually, or as a group. Tasks may include:• book response tasks• research or investigative tasks• online tasks• assignments• other tasks as prescribed by the class teacher.

Assessment tasks not administered under controlled conditions require appropriate validation/authentication processes. Summative tasks that are completed during the period of Remote Learning may require a follow up Authentication task(s), undertaken at an appropriate time on the students’ return to school.

Parents are encouraged to support their children to complete tasks as assigned by class teachers and submit them by the specified due date. It is also important to note that while students may collaborate during certain tasks, all work submitted in each individual assessment task must be their own work. Students need to be aware that cheating, collusion and plagiarism are not acceptable, and consequences of such behaviour is outlined in College’s Assessment Policy (Section 4.1). The full policy, including penalties for late submission of assessments (Section 3.4), is available via SEQTA under College Policies.

ExaminationsEmmanuel Catholic College is currently planning for the Semester 1 examinations to occur during Term 2, however we will be better placed to give further details early in the term regarding specific dates and weightings.

• Examinations for Year 11 General students will not be scheduled. Any common assessment tasks will occur during class time.

• ESTs for Year 12 students have been postponed. SCSA will provide further information regarding ESTs in due course.

• Year 11 & 12 ATAR examinations will be scheduled. The specific dates will be communicated to students in due course. A decision is yet to be made regarding the weighting of these examinations towards students’ final aggregates.

• The intention is for Year 10 examinations to occur sometime during Term 2. Further information will be provided in due course.

In relation to Year 12, SCSA have informed schools that they are:• still planning for WACE exams to occur in November

for Year 12 ATAR students• still intending for Year 12 General students to

complete EST assessments, however these will be postponed from the original dates in May

• working closely with other states and universities to ensure students are supported with their endeavours to pursue further education through universities and TAFEs, as well as achieving the WACE

• intending to send each Year 12 student a letter outlining their position in relation to Covid-19 and how it may impact their final year of secondary education.

Student Wel l beingEmmanuel Catholic College staff and the Pastoral Care Team are committed to ensuring high levels of engagement and communication to maintain the priorities of student wellbeing and the delivery of pastoral care. It is vital during this time of physical distancing and isolation that our students and families are able to continue to connect and grow socially, emotionally and spiritually.

Numerous additional initiatives will be implemented throughout the period of Remote Learning to facilitate connection and wellbeing.

Pastoral CareEvery Pastoral Care Group from Year 7 to Year 12 will continue to meet ‘virtually’ with their Pastoral Care teachers for fifteen minutes each morning. The structure of daily Pastoral Care will allow students to:

• connect with their classmates and Pastoral Care teacher

• build positive emotions by sharing what they can be grateful for in this new remote environment

• discuss ways to develop and enhance their wellbeing

• share any good news or concerns

Each Pastoral Care group will have access to Wellbeing resources to encourage students to prioritise and build upon their wellbeing. These resources will highlight the importance of:

• sleep• good nutrition• established routines, including screen and brain

breaks• physical movement and exercise• relationships, emotions, meaning and purpose

Heads of Year will continue to connect with their cohorts on a daily and weekly basis. In collaboration with the Pastoral Care teachers they will be monitoring the attendance and wellbeing of each student. Deputy Principals will also be joining Pastoral Care Groups regularly to touch base with students and promote connectivity. Parents are encouraged to email their Pastoral Care teacher and Head of Year if they wish to share any good news or discuss any concerns they may have for their child.

N.B: Please see the ‘approved platform’ below for student meetings.

Aboriginal Liaison ServiceOur Aboriginal Liaison Officer, Mrs Anita Jackman-Davey will continue to offer support for our Aboriginal students and families. Students will be contacted weekly to discuss any wellbeing or academic concerns. Students and families are encouraged to email Mrs Jackman-Davey to share their news or discuss any concerns. [email protected]

N.B: Please see the ‘approved platform’ below for student meetings

Student ServicesStudent Services will continue to operate during this time of remote learning. Parents are encouraged to continue to communicate any attendance information if your child is unwell or unable to participate in an online lesson for any other reason. To ensure continuity of service we also ask that you update us of any new residential or medical information regarding your child. [email protected]

C ounsel ling ServiceOur College is committed to continuing to provide mental health support to our students using various communication mediums, specifically tele-counselling through Microsoft Teams. All students currently accessing the College Counselling Service will continue to be supported in a remote context during school hours.

Approved P latformTele-counselling through Microsoft Teams will allow us to ensure information about your child is protected with the highest level of security and is compliant with state and federal policy and the internal policies set by Catholic Education Western Australia.

N.B: The Heads of Year and Aboriginal Liaison Officer will also be utilising Microsoft Teams when they conduct online meetings with students.

Parental C onsent The College seeks consent from parents for students to access the Wellbeing Service upon commencement of enrolment. Consent to access counselling has been established for all existing students and will be ascertained for any new students wishing to access counselling. Any parent who does not wish for their child to access counselling support during this time of remote learning is asked to please contact the Director of Wellbeing, Mrs Fiona McAuliffe.

Ensuring PrivacyParents are responsible for providing a safe and confidential place within the family home where their child is able to access the tele-counselling service. In this space your child will need a device that can provide access to the Counselling Service.

Ethical PracticeThere is no difference in providing counselling face-to-face or via a range of e-support options with regard to ethical practice. The College Counsellors will ensure they adhere to their appropriate ethical guidelines, legal requirements and organisational policies despite the changing environment or context.

Students and families are encouraged to discuss any concerns they have regarding their child’s wellbeing and mental health with the relevant Head of Year and/or the Director of Wellbeing Services.

Recess and LunchRecess and lunch breaks remain the same and it is important for students to use this time away from their screens. The College understands firsthand that students are using this time to reconnect with their friends. We fully support connection, however, instead of video calling, why not go outside and make a ‘phone call’ instead. It is really important for wellbeing that students can take a break away from their screen time.

Christian ServiceAs a Catholic College we are proud to teach our students about the many benefits of understanding, believing in and serving something greater than themselves and deliberately engaging in activities for the benefits of others. During this period of isolation it is more important than ever to think of those in need and continue to connect in other ways as a community.

Whilst the requirements for Christian Service have been postponed, there are still a wide range of ways students can complete Christian Service from home. They can still contact community groups and not-for-profit

organisations via email/phone and ask what they can do to help from home. Writing letters to the sick, elderly or those in need is a simple, yet thoughtful way students can be of service to others. The Head of Christian Service, Mr Tom Ryan, has sent a resource to all students and welcomes contact from students and families who may wish to share positive experiences or have any questions or concerns.
