DESCRIPTION

A study on the life of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and how she treasured events in the life of Jesus from birth, wavered a bit during His ministry, eventually stood at the cross weeping for her son, was entrusted to John, the closest of Jesus' disciples (John 19:25-27), and now stands as a model for all mothers. The story reflects the mother-heart of God and his unconditional love for all mankind. It enjoins older women to care for the younger generation in the Church and the younger generation to look after the the older women in the Church.

Looking for Jesus When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”

“Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” But they did not understand what he was saying to them.

Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.

Luke 2:48-51, NIV

Wedding in Cana On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

“Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”

His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

John 2:1-5, NIV

Mother and BrothersNow Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.”

He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.”

Luke 8:19-21, NIV

“Isn't this the carpenter? Isn't this Mary's son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?" And they [the Jews] took offense at him.

Mark 6:3, NIV

Jesus’ Final Concern

When Jesus saw his mother there [near the cross], and the disciple whom he loved [John] standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

John 19:25-27, NIV

Points to Ponder

• Jesus gave John to Mary as her son (in his place)

• John was told to take care of Mary (as his own mother)

• Mary was not entrusted to Jesus’ brothers
