Thousands take part in County Sport Festival!

On the 3rd and 4th March 2015 over 1,400 young people from across the County came together to compete in the Winter Shropshire Homes School Sport Festival, as part of Sainsbury’s School Games. Participants came from 50 primary and 37 secondary schools, taking part in 23 events with sports including; dodgeball, basketball, cross country, gymnastics, athletics, rugby, hockey, netball, indoor rowing and volleyball. The standard of competition was very high, with participants showing determination and team work. Congratulations go to East Shropshire who were winners on both the primary and secondary day. In addition to the hundreds of participants, there were also over 150 outstanding young leaders, taking on the roles of team manager, officials and event managers. Their involvement and support during the two days are key to making the Festival run smoothly. Prior to the Festival this year, young people were given the chance to compete in a ‘School Games Has Got Talent’ competition, with the opportunity for the winning acts to perform at the opening ceremonies. The winning acts showcased great singing and dancing talent, to get the Festival off to an inspiring start. Also present to inspire participants were Kelda Wood; part of the GB para-canoe team, Natasha Hunt; part of the England women’s Rugby World Cup winning team and Mel Clarke; GB Paralympic archer. Click here for the full results The next Shropshire Homes School Sport Festival will take place on 30th June and 1st July 2015 (Summer Festival). Jewson Building Better Communities

Jewson is giving away £100,000 to help build better communities. If you are working on a project to improve facilities in your community, they would like to hear from you.

There’s a top prize of £50,000, which can be used to pay for both materials and labour. There are other prizes of between £1,000 and £5,000 to cover the cost of building materials.

You can visit their website to nominate your project. You need to describe your project in 300 words, and include photos. Projects such as an improved play area or playing field facilities will be eligible. A shortlist will then be drawn up. If your project makes the shortlist then you need to get your community to vote, before a panel decides on the winners.

The closing date is 12 April 2015. View more details

Me and My pupil insight software Energize have recently purchased the ‘Me and My’ pupil insight software so that schools in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin can purchase 12 month licences. The software provides primary and secondary schools with a series of online survey tools and reporting mechanisms to help capture and interpret pupils' views. It supports schools with developing a concise self-evaluation, understanding sporting preferences, healthy lifestyle choices and exploring other areas of school life. The software is compatible with School Information Management Systems which uniquely allows for the results to be instantly cross referenced against the demographic data. Staff can then analyse the pupils' responses and view automatically generated reports.

Me and My provides:

Insight across key demographic groups: Pupil data (e.g. gender, year group, ethnicity, free school meal eligibility and attainment level) is uploaded into the software to provide a unique and detailed understanding of pupil’s views.

Supporting evidence towards the Ofsted Inspection Framework: Whole school and subject specific surveys support schools in making evidence based judgements against the key headings that inspectors will focus on.

Real time data enabling instant analysis: The software crunches the data and produces reports automatically, providing staff with the information they require instantly.

Energize are offering a special introductory 12 month license fee for individual schools at a cost of: • £150 per Primary School • £500 per Secondary School However, as Energize are looking to work with schools that are enthusiastic about gaining pupil insight and would welcome a software package that would make this a much easier process, discounted rates will be available. Pocket Planner This Pocket Planner is a great way to encourage children to get at least 60 minutes of exercise every day.

Children record how much activity they do each day in this pocket-sized booklet. After four weeks, they will be awarded a free certificate of achievement to recognise and reward regular participation in physical activity.

The Pocket Planner aims to get children thinking and talking about how active they are in and outside of School.

Children can follow a four-week path towards their ‘Let’s Get Active’ award certificate with fun ideas for ways to be active along the route. For a tougher challenge children can complete all four weekly challenges to earn their ‘Let’s Get Active’ challenge award.

You can download the ‘Let’s Get Active’ award Pocket Planner or order hard copies Click here to access the Pocket Planner

New sports coach website launched for primary schools

The Coaching in Schools Portal - unveiled by Sports Coach UK - will provide advice for headteachers on how to recruit, develop and use coaches effectively using the government funding. It covers: • Getting the most from coaches • Finding the right coach • What qualifications and skills are required • Evidencing the quality and impact of coaching for Ofsted inspection s • Further training and resources So far, headteachers have used the funding to recruit extra specialist PE teachers and train up staff - as well as buying new equipment and offering a wider selection of sports clubs. Two-thirds of schools (67%) have used the funding to bring in new sports coaches. Research has shown that schools have used the PE and sport premium - worth more than £450 million over 3 years - to deliver more and better sport. Primary schools are now doing an average of 122 minutes of PE each week, up 13 minutes from the year before the funding was brought in. View the full press release
