Year 9 is a mixture of keystage 3 and 4 in that GCSE courses have begun in some core subjects while students continue with entitlement across the national curriculum and will chose options in the spring term.

• These papers will be sat by all students in June 2012 (Year 10)



• Attaining a GCSE in Maths is essential for Level 3 study and most jobs.

• The competition for all post 16 options is fierce and we need to equip our students adequately.

• This system means that we are not waiting until the end of Year 11 to find out results. Students will know where they are up to and what they need to focus on.



• Students will follow one of the following routes depending on their progress and results

- They will begin AS Maths & sit a

module in June of Year 11

- They will complete a GCSE in statistics

in Year 11

- They will continue to work on GCSE Maths for a re sit opportunity in November Year 11

The bigger picture:




What is FCSE?

• FCSE is the Foundation Certificate of Secondary Education.

• It is a nationally recognised qualification which rewards pupils for what they have achieved at KS3.



How is it assessed?• Pupils are assessed by end of unit tests in

the four skill areas of listening, reading, speaking and writing.

• Pupils submit a portfolio of evidence to AQA in May, containing recordings of the speaking tests and copies of their listening,reading and writing papers.



The Award• There are three levels of award

Pass level 4

Merit level 5

Distinction level 6

• Results are published in August at the same time as the GCSE results and certificates are issued in the autumn.



FCSE French at Thornleigh• The units we are covering this year in

Food and Drink- tested in November

Meeting People- tested in February

Holidays – tested in April



FCSE Spanish at Thornleigh• The units we are covering this year in

Spanish are:

Leisure - tested in November

Education -tested in February

Food and Drink– tested in April



Why FCSE?• It recognises and rewards achievement in

French/Spanish for pupils in year 9.

• It provides excellent progression for pupils who choose to study a language at GCSE. If you are thinking about going to university then you should think about doing at least one MFL at GCSE level. It is viewed as an impressive achievement regardless of the university course that you want to study.



•You are the first year of raising the participation age- in education or training until 17!

•Preparing young people to take their place in a rapidly changing world

* by 2020 there will be 3 million fewer low skilled jobs than today

* by 2020 40% of all jobs will require a degree

* by 2014 UK will need 324000more scientists and engineers

* the top 10 jobs today did not exist 6 years ago
