What is ‘good’ ESOL?Julie Day

What factors do you need to take into account when planning to put on ESOL classes?

Good ESOL

What factors do you need to take into account when planning to put on ESOL classes?

● Learners’ language level and previous education● Learners’ sex● Asylum seekers and refugees● Learners’ unemployment status● Health and other support needs● Anything else?

Good ESOL

How about publicising classes to potential learners?

Good ESOL

How about publicising classes to the potential learners?● Posters in schools, health centres, mosques, etc.● The local paper● Word of mouth● Social media● All of the above as appropriate – it depends on the

learners.

Good ESOL

1. What arrangement of furniture would allow your learners to interact with each other most effectively in the class room?

● Furniture which can be moved into different configurations

● Space to move around while standing up.

Good ESOL

2. c. A teacher with ESOL teaching qualifications and experience

a. Whiteboard or projectorb. Audio/ video equipmentd. Interactive whiteboard or projectore. Access to computers/ laptops/ tablets for learners

Good ESOL

3. Example ground rules or strategies ● You know your learners!● Relevant to their lives; well planned and FUN.● e.g. arrive more than 15 minutes late, can’t join class.● Limit the number of learners per class.● e.g. stop enrolments 4 weeks after start of the class.● Limit use of first language in class.

Good ESOL

4. ESOL teacher training● Online course - not enough teaching practice● 120 hours & 25 hours teaching practice - CELTA or Trinity

CertTESOL● Masters in TESOL - no teaching practice: for senior

practitioners● PTLLS/ Level 3 Award in Education & Training - no ESOL

specialism

Good ESOL

5. Continuing professional development:● meet with more experienced colleagues to share

expertise● observe ESOL teachers e.g. experienced colleague● do online training● attend formal training opportunities. Most important to ‘REFLECT’ on any training and implement in future teaching

Good ESOL

6. Initial assessment to correctly place learners; to get indication of learner needsDiagnostic assessment● detailed information about learner needs● carried out over the first few weeks of the programme● recorded then used in long and short term planning

Good ESOL

7. Formative assessment● assessment of learner achievement of stages of lesson● assessment of learner achievement of lesson learning objectives● should be taken into account in planning for future learning

Summative assessment● at the end of the course● shows teacher and learners what they have learnt● celebration of learning

Good ESOL

8. learning content that is relevant to learners’ local area● results of diagnostic assessment● learning content to match school curriculums - not for adult learners● a balance of speaking, listening, reading and writing skills● a strong focus on writing skills - depends on learners● there is grammar input every day - focus on skills and outside world● topics relevant to learners’ interests● follow the topics from a course book - appropriate course books?

Good ESOL

9. Add to learners’ experience?● bilingual support - limited to when essential e.g. building

confidence, not detracting from speaking in class● pastoral support e.g. getting voluntary work, emotional?● visits - local shops, museums, etc.● other social activities

Good ESOL

10. End of an ESOL course● Summative assessment of learning● Feedback to learners● Party - celebrate learners’ achievements● Assist with progression to next steps e.g. college, work,

etc.● Evaluate programme - what can be improved upon?

Good ESOL

What is a good ESOL lesson?

Good ESOL lesson

Read the case studies

● which lesson of the pairs is better?● why?● if you have time, how could they develop

or improve their practice?

Good ESOL lesson

Consider:
