ns Motovun A monumental city, founded on the top of a hill with an altitude of

277 meters above the sea level, represents the authentic image of the medieval Istrian town surrounded by a series of walls. The view from the walls comprises numberless surrounding vineyards and especially the known forest-park of Moto-vun, rich of truffles. Starting from the entrance door and the town’s loggia, until the main square with St Stephen’s church with the belfry-tower, and the paved streets, Motovun is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful towns of Istria. Das Städtchen - ein wahres Denkmal, entstand auf einem 277 Meter hohem Berg, mit dem einzigartigen Erscheinungsbild eines authentischen aus Stein errichteten mittelalterlichen istrischen Städtchens, eingepfercht hinter einem ringförmigen Wall. Von diesem Wall aus erstreckt sich ein Blick auf die Weinfelder und den bekannten gepflegten Motovuner Wald, der reich an Trüffel ist. Angefangen mit dem Eingang

und der Stadtloggia, bis hin zum Platz mit der St.-Stefan-Kirche und dem Glockenturm - Wachturm, sowie den glattgetretenen Pflaster-

Završje (240 m)Driving down the road towards Završje, the syntagm magical Istria assumes its full meaning: it is truly a breathtaking view. In the foreground is the medieval town rising on a cliff above the Mirna Valley, and in the distance behind it is Motovun on the other side of the river, on another hill, as if afloat. This is where the story about the fortifications, about life above the Mirna River, about the trade that took place in its ports and navigability deep into the interior, the mystical quality of Motovun forest and centennial battles for possession, comes to life. The town developed on the site of a prehistoric hill-fort, while life in Antiquity is testified by inscriptions and reliefs. It was first mentioned in the 11th c. in the deed of gift of the Patriarch of Aquileia. Already then it was some kind of a fortified structure that was reconstructed and rein-forced during the administration of different rulers, from the Counts of Gorizia, to the Habsburgs, the Devins and the Austrian Empire. The most extensive works were carried out in the 16th c. when

Završje was purchased with Ko-stanjica at auction and came into possession of the Contarini family. It was protected by a double ring of walls, remains of which are partly visible even today. The southern town gate has also been preserved. Wenn man auf der Straße Richtung Završje hin-unter fährt, erhält die Bezeichnung „Magisches Istrien“ ihren wahren Sinn: es ergibt sich ein atembe-raubender Blick. Im Vorgrund liegt die kleine mittelalterliche Stadt auf einem Felsen über dem Fluss Mirna. In der Weite dahinter liegt Motovun auf der anderen Flussseite auf einem anderen Berg. Es erscheint so, als ab die Stadt schweben würde. Da wird die Geschichte von den Befesti-gungen lebendig, vom Leben über dem Fluss Mirna, vom Handel, der sich in ihren Häfen abwickelte und von der Schiffbarkeit bis ins tiefe Landesinnere. Von der Mystik des Motovuner Waldes und von hundertjährigen Ausei-nandersetzungen um Besitz. Die Siedlung entstand an Stelle einer urgeschichtlichen Gradina. Über das Leben in der Antike zeugen Inschriften und Reliefs. Die Stadt

wurde zum ersten Mal im 11. Jahrhundert in einer Schenkungs-urkunde an den Patriarchen von Aquileia erwähnt. Schon damals war der Ort befestigt, der während der Verwaltung unter verschie-denen Herrschern, angefangen mit den Grafen von Görz, den Habsburgern, den Besitzern von Devin, wie auch des österreichi-schen Kaiserreiches, umgebaut und verstärkt wurde. Die um-fangreichsten Umgestaltungen geschahen im 16. Jahrhundert, als Završje zusammen mit Kos-tanjica bei einer Versteigerung von Familie Contarini erworben wurde. Der Ort war durch einen zweifachen Mauerring geschützt, dessen Reste auch heute teilweise sichtbar sind.

Buje (222 m)The excellent strategic position of the Buje hill attracted the area’s ancient inhabitants as early as the Bronze Age. The origin of these people is unknown. They lived in a fortified, prehistoric settlement on the top of the hill. The remains of some 20 such hill-forts have been uncovered in Buje and its environs. The Histrians, the first documented people of Istria, lived in these hill-forts during the Iron Age. With the coming of Roman rule to Istria, the territory of Buje became the landed property of the Trieste colony and a part of the Venetia et Histria region. The prehistoric hill-fort was aban-doned at that time but resettled in late Antiquity by refugees

In Buje und Umgebung wurden die Überreste von 20ig solcher Festungen gefunden. Es ist be-kannt, dass in den Festungen zur Eisenzeit die Histrier, das erste dokumentierte Volk auf dem Gebiet Istriens, lebten. Durch die Gründung der römischen Herrschaft in Istrien wird das Ter-ritorium von Buje zum Besitztum der Triester Kolonien und in die Region „Venetia et Histria“ einver-leibt. Das prähistorische Kastell ist zu dieser Zeit verlassen, wird aber in der Spätantike wieder zum Leben erweckt. Besiedelt wird es von den Flüchtlingen, die

vor den Einbrüchen der Barbaren zurückweichen und allmählich erhalten Buje die Merkmale einer mittelalterlichen befestigten Stadt.

Oprtalj (378 m) With unchanged urban medieval disposition, the narrow streets, the shops, the beautiful Venetian palaces, portals and covered pas-sages, and particularly the unique view to the Istrian peninsula from the town loggia, according to many the most beautiful of Istria. Oprtalj is an authentic gem of the inner land that is worth to be visited, before the road leads through Livade until the only and magical Motovun. Mit seinem berühmten mittelalterlichen Grundriss, den engen Gassen, den Plätzen und herrlichen venezianischen Paläs-ten und Portalen und überdachten Durchgängen, aber besonders durch seinen einmaligen Blick auf Istrien, den man von der Stadtloggia aus hat, die für die schönste Loggia in Istrien gehalten wird, ist Oprtalj eine wahre Perle des Landesinneren, die sorgfältig erforscht werden sollte, bevor es weiter über Livade zu dem einzigartigen und bezaubernden Städtchen Motovun geht.

Grožnjan (228 m) Grožnjan is a centre of culture, situated high on a hilltop. It is a town of artists, positive vibra-tions, numerous galleries and studios. In the mid-14th century it fell under Venetian rule. Venice fortified the town walls and made Grožnjan a defence centre. A part of the fortifications has survived to this day, as have the town gates from the late 15th century, the Renaissance loggia and the Chapel of St. Cosmo and Dam-ian from 1554. The somewhat younger parish church has a lavish Baroque interior. Grožnjan ist ein kulturelles Zentrum auf einer Anhöhe, auch „Stadt der Künstler“ genannt, mit positiver Atmosphäre aufgrund einer hohen Anzahl von Galerien und Ateliers. In der Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts wurden unter der Herrschaft Ve-netiens Stadtmauern zum Schutz der Stadt errichtet und beförderte die Stadt damit zu einem wichtigen Verteidigungszentrum. Teile der Mauerwerke wurden bis heute erhalten, wie die Stadttore aus dem Übergang vom 15. ins 16. Jh., Logen aus der Renaissance und die Kapellen St. Kuzma und St. Damjan aus dem Jahre 1554. Eine etwas jüngere Pfarrkirche hat eine reiche barocke Einrichtung.

Gračišće (296 m) Gračišće is a town situated on the plateau of a hill whose eastern slopes rise up to 454 meters above sea level. The town’s present-day urban structure, characterized by a unique arrangement of streets and squares dates from the first half of the 15th century, the time when it was the property of the Counts of Walsee, within the Aus-trian Archduchy. The church dedi-cated to the Blessed Virgin Mary in Gračišće’s central square dates from this period. Gračišće ist eine Ortschaft auf dem Gipfelplateau eines Berges, dessen östlicher Hang sich bis zu 454 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel erhebt. Die damalige Stadt erhielt ihre heutige städtebauliche Struktur, die durch eine einzigartige Anordnung von Wegen und Plätzen charakterisiert ist, in der ersten Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts, also zu einer Zeit, als die Adligen aus dem Geschlecht von Walsee diese Gegend im Rahmen des Österreichischen Erzherzogstums verwalteten. In dieser Zeit entstand die der see-ligen Jungfrau Maria gewidmete Kirche auf dem Hauptplatz von Gračišće, zu dem der Weg am repräsentativen Salamon Palast vorbei führt.

Pićan (335 m) From antiquity up to the 18th century, Pićan was the seat of the diocese. During the Byzan-tine Empire it was the seat of government for a significant part of central Istria. The Bishop’s Palace, a part of the medieval walls and the 14th century town gate are preserved. As a centre of non-material heritage it hosts the festival of Istrian legends, myths and stories.The Roman-esque church by the graveyard is decorated with frescoes. The Church of St. Rocco is from the 17th century. Pićan war von der Antike bis zum 18. Jahrhundert ein eigenständiges Bischoftum, und im alten Byzanz führte die-se Stadt einen großen Teil von

Mittelistrien. Sehr gut erhalten ist der Bischofspalast, ein Teil der Stadtmauern aus dem Mittelalter sowie die städtischen Tore aus dem 14. Jahrhundert. Diese Stadt ist ein Symbol für immaterielle Kulturgüter. Hier werden regel-mäßig Festivals über istrianische Legenden, Sagen und Märchen veranstaltet. Die romanische Kirche St. Rok aus dem 17. Jh. beim Friedhof ist mit Fresken ausgeschmückt.

Stari Rakalj (93 m) Stari Rakalj (Old Rakalj) is located on a hill above the promontory of St. Nicholas in the Bay of Raša. This was a prehistoric fort, ancient fortification and medieval castle; today we can see the well-preserved church of St.Agnes. Lo-

cal legends tell of the connection between this saint, pirate ships, storms at the sea and sunken treasure. Whether there is some truth in them, we cannot tell, but one thing is certian: here you will be welcomed by beautiful nature and magnificent views of the surrounding areas. Die alte Stadt Stari Rakalj, eine vorgrschichti-liche Burg, antike Festung und mittelalterliches Kastell befindet sich auf einem Hügel oberhalb der Landzunge von St. Nikolaus in der Raša-Bucht. Die St. Agnes Kirche ist bis heute gut erhalten. Mit dieser Heiligen sind Legenden über Piraten, Meeresstürme und versunkene Schätze verbunden. Wie viel davon der Wahrheit ent-spricht, ist heute schwer zu sagen, doch eines ist sicher: hier erwartet den Besucher eine bezauberende Natur und eine herrliche Aussicht.

Draguć (503 m) The village was named after a brook that flows at the bottom of the slopes of the hill where the village is situated, towards today’s lake Butoniga. A toponym is a Slavic word Draga, unchanged until present day. Draguć was mentioned for the first time as Dravuiein a deed of gift of Ulrich II to the Aquileian pa-triarch in 1102. An interesting event happened in 1294 when Count Albert II of Gorizia gave Draguć to Maingualda from the nearby Kašćerga as a part of a wedding gift. Fifty years later it was annexed to the County of Pazin. In the 15th century, the parish church of the Holly Cross was built in its place. At the same time, walls and angular towers were built all around the settlement. The job was supervised by the Venetian providur F. Basadonn. The new owners erected the walls due to the Venetian demolition in the attack in 1421 (General Teddeo d’Este led the army). It was demolished again in 1471, 1482, in 1511 by the ravaging Ottomans and after the peace agreement between Venice and Austria in 1523. Draguć came under Venetian administration, becoming an important town-castle at the frontier. Draguć wird zum ersten Mal im Jahre 1102 als Dravuie in der Schenkungsurkunde des Markgrafen Ulrich II an den Patriarchen von Aquileia erwähnt. Später im Jahr 1294 schenkte Graf Albert II Draguć an Mainguald aus der Nähe von Kaščerga als Teil eines Hochzeitgeschenkes. Fünfzig Jahre später wurde Draguć an das Paziner Fürstentum angeschlossen. Auf dem Gebiet der Burg wurde im 15. Jahrhundert die Pfarrkirche Hl. Kreuz erbaut und die gesamte Siedlung durch Mauern mit Ecktürmen umgeben. Der Bau wurde durch den venezianischen Statthalter F. Basadonna überwacht. Die Mauern wurden später von neuen Besitzern errichtet, weil sie im Jahre 1421 im Angriff durch Venedig (die Armee wurde von Taddeo d‘Este geführt) größtenteils zerstört wurden. In den Jahren 1471, 1482 und 1511 wurde Draguć im Angriff von den Türken mehrfach angegriffen und zerstört. Nachdem Venedig und Österreich im Jahre 1523 Frieden geschlossen haben, gehört Draguć zu Venedig und gewinnt als Grenzgarnision an Bedeutung.

Hum (331 m) Feel welcome to this town because the very warmth of its stone walls can wrap you up is the inscription which will welcome you and which you will be reading while going through the main gate of this medieval town situated a top the hill just above the source of the Mirna river. The passage way through the double preserved gate which you are going through and which dates from 1562, leads you towards the square of the small-est town in the world: Hum. In a relatively small area there are all needed town functions: the Municipal loggia, the residential houses for the noblemen and the locals, and a parish church with a residency for a prefect.

Buzet

Draguć

Buzet (153 m) Its historic core, dating from the Middle Ages lies on a hilltop above a fertile valley of the longest Istrian river, the Mirna. Throughout the Middle Ages Buzet shared the destiny of northern Istria by changing rulers: Frankish kings, German feu-dal lords, Patriarch of Aquileia (1102-1421), the Republic of Venice (1421-1789). On the hilltops overlooking the Mirna River and slopes of Ćićarija a number of small towns emerged: Rašpor, Vrh, Sovinjak, Draguć, Roč, Hum. The limited living area surrounded by walls and dominant position of castle defined their urban development. Today, Buzet is widely known as the ‘City of Truffles’ since the forests along the Mirna River are especially rich in this divine tuber. In honour of this truffle, each year Truffle Days are organized from September till November. On the second weekend in September a large folk festivity also take place in Buzet with a special attraction - a giant omelette with over 2 000 eggs (2014!) and 10 kilograms off truffles is prepared in a huge pan. This event officially marks the beginning of Truffle Days in Istria. Buzet ist eine mittelalterliche auf einem Hügel gelegene Stadt, oberhalb eines sehr fruchtbaren Tals, durch das der größte istrische Fluss Mirna fließt. Während des Mittelalters folgte Buzet dem Schicksal Nordistriens, indem sich die Herrscher abwechselten: fränkische Könige, deutsche Feudalherren, die Patriar-chen von Aquileia (1102-1421), die Serenissima der Republik Venedig (1421-1789). Auf den Gipfeln der Hügel entlang des Flusses Mirna und an den Abhängen der Ćićarija entstanden eine Reihe kleiner Städte: Rašpor, Vrh, Sovinjak, Draguć, Roč, Hum. Der beschränkte von Mauern umfasste Lebensraum und die dominante Lage des Kastells bedingten ihre städtische Entwicklung. Heute ist Buzet am bekanntesten als die „Stadt der Trüffel“, wegen der köstlichen Knollen, die es vorwiegend im „Jagdgebiet“ Istrien gibt und das sich gerade in den Wäldern entlang des Flusstals Mirna befindet Ihr zu Ehren finden jedes Jahr von September bis November die „Trüffeltage“ statt, und am zweiten Wochenende im September wird auch ein großes Volksfest organisiert, bei dem in einer großen Pfanne mit einem Durchmesser von einigen Metern, eine große Eierspeise angerichtet wird, mit mehr als 2.000 Eiern (2014!) und 10 Kilogramm Trüffel, mit der die „Trüffeltage in Istrien“ auch offiziell beginnen.

Zur Begrüßung der Besucher die-

ses mittelalterlichen Städtchens,

das sich auf einem Hügel oberhalb

der Quelle des Flusses Mirna

befindet, steht am Haupttor ge-

schrieben: „In diese kleine Stadt

kommen Sie zu Besuch, aus den

kalten Steinen strahlt Wärme“.

Die zweiflügelige Tor-Tür aus dem

Beginn des 12. Jahrhunderts, deren

heutige Form das Tor im Jahr 1562

erhielt, führt uns zum Hauptplatz

der kleinsten Stadt der Welt, Hum.

Auf einer kleinen Fläche befinden

sich: das Rathaus, Häuser für den

Adel und die gewöhnlichen Dorfbe-

wohner, sowie die Pfarrkirche mit

einem Wohnsitz für den Pfarrer.

Dvigrad (150 m) In Dvigrad we find the impressive remains of a town that spread over two hilltops and had a popula-tion of 2000 inhabitants. Due to plague and war only three families lived there in the 17th century. In 1714, when the parish moved to Kanfanar, the town finally died out. It is the largest complex of medieval remains in Istria. It consists of double fortifications, three gates, old streets, a 14th century tower and the remains of over two hundred buildings. The town centre had a square, a bell tower and the Church of St. Sofia which was located on the hilltop. Dvigrad sind beein-druckende Überreste einer Stadt, die sich über 2 Berge erstreckte und über 2000 Einwohner zählte. Aufgrund von Pest und Kriege lebten im 17. Jahrhundert dort nur noch 3 Familien, 1714 endete dies mit einem Umzug nach Kan-fanar. Dies ist der größte Komplex mittelalterlicher uinen in Istrien. Die Stadt war umringt durch eine doppelschichtige Wand mit drei Türen, alte Straßen, Türme aus dem 14. Jahrhundert und die

Überreste von über 200 Gebäuden. An der Spitze des Hügels war ein Zentrum mit einem Hauptplatz, mit städtischem Palast sowie der Kirche St. Sophie.Sv. Lovreč (202 m)Sv. Lovreč has managed to pre-serve its long fortifications, in-cluding several towers and town gates. The oldest part of the walls dates from the 11th or 12th century. When the town fell under Venetian rule its walls were additionally fortified and it became the centre of Venetian government for rural country estates in Istria. The three-nave Basilica of St. Martin in the largest church from the first half of the 11th century in Croatia. Alongside the church we find the town log-gia. The town centre consists of a bell tower, a stone-paved square, a pillar of shame, as well as a modern art gallery. Sv. Lovreč hat gut erhaltene Stadtmauern mit mehreren Türmen und Stadttoren. Der älteste Bereich stammt aus dem 11. oder 12. Jh., und durch den venezianischen Regierungs-übergang 1271 wird die Stadt zur venezianischen Verwaltung für ländliche Anwesen in Istrien. Die

dreischiffige Basilika St. Martin ist die größte Kirche aus der ersten Hälfte des 11. Jahrhunderts in Kroatien. This position has given birth to extraordinary positions from which one can observe the surrounding islands, islets, bays and coves. The largest of all viewpoints can be found just below the Church of St. Anthony of Padua, below the Small Gate of Vrsar from where it affords a

wide view towards the south-west. It is one of the oldest and most spacious viewpoints of Vrsar. Protected by the shade of the trees and featuring a stone table, a bench and a traditional Istrian cistern, it hides in its background an intimate ambience of the small square spreading in front of the Small Gate and the Church of St. Anthony of Padua. The second viewpoint is just behind the Parish Church of St. Martin and boasts the view towards the north, of Valkanela and the archipelago of Funtana. This tiered viewpoint simply invites numerous tourists to sit down on the stairs and stay for a while. Only a dozen metres below there is a tiny viewpoint

called Bepo and Tonina (Joe and Tonia) enjoying the view of the north-west. The viewpoint is rather impressive owing to the stylised sculpture of man and woman forming the back of the bench. KanfanarPadua und des kleinen Tores, von wo aus man eine weite Aussicht in Richtung Südwesten hat. Es handelt sich um einen der ältesten und flächenmässig größten Aus-sichtspunkte in Vrsar. Er befindet sich im Schatten von Bäumen mit einem Steintisch, einer Bank und einer in Istrien typischen Zisterne. Dahinter versteckt sich das intime Ambiente des Plätzchens vor dem kleinen Stadttor und der Kirche des heiligen Anton aus Padua. Der zweite Aussichtspunkt befindet sich hinter der Pfarrkir-che des heiligen Martin, wo sich der Ausblick in Richtung Norden erstreckt auf Valkanela und das Archipel von Funtana. Es handelt sich um einen Aussichtsplatz mit mehreren Ebenen und einigen Stufen, sodass Raum zum Sitzen für mehrere Personen vorhanden ist. Etwas unterhalb, nur wenige Meter entfernt, befindet sich ein kleinerer, nach Nordwesten rei-chender Aussichtspunkt genannt Bepo und Tonina. Nezakcij Ližnjan The archaeological site Nesactium (Vizače) is situated on the hillock Glavica in the vicinity of Valtura, east of Pula, above a lush valley and the bay Budava. Nesactium is known as the last capital of the Histris, a tribe of Indo-European origin that was constituted at the beginning of the Iron Age after they had settled on the Peninsula. Historical sources confirm that the Histris controlled the sea of southern Istria and obstructed Roman and Greek navigation. The Romans started the first war in 221 BC and began to devastate the hill-forts and fleet of the Histris in order to control navigation. The last Illyrian king, Epulon, united the tribes and gave resistance to the Romans, but after a two-year siege of Nesactium in 177 BC, the Histris were conquered. Allegedly, king Epulon and his warriors chose suicide rather than slavery to the Romans. Vodnjan Gothic houses in Vod-njan are grouped around the main town square. On the corner of the street leading toward the parish church, there is a house which in Vodnjan is called castelleto, a two-storey Gothic house with one and two-lighted mullioned windows facing the square. The façade of the house (the future home of the Vodnjan museum collection) was built of symmetrical stone blocks. On the opposite side of the street there is another interesting Gothic building with pointed Gothic arched windows whose façade and lintel were rebuilt in the 19th century, whereas the old lintel was walled-in. It bears a carved humorous inscrip-tion “tali me domanda…” meaning “I am fine, thank you”, written by the owner of the house. Malerisch gruppiern sich dle gotischen Bauten auf dem Hauptplatz von Vodnjan. An der Ecke der Straße, die zur Pfarr-kirche führt, steht ein Haus, das in Vodnjan “Castelleto“ genannt wird. Es ist ein zweistöckiges Haus mit go-tischen Einzel- und Doppelfenstern, die in Richtung Hauptplatz zeigen. Die Vorderseite des Hauses (der zu-künftigen Museumssammlungen von Vodnjan) wurde aus gleichmäßigen Steinblöcken gebaut. Gegenüber-liegenden befindet sich das zweite gotische Gebäude mit gotischen Spitzbogenfenstern, dessen Fas-sade im 19. Jahrhundert repariert wurde, als auch der Türsturz des Haupteingangs ausgetauscht wurde. Der alte Tüstock wurde in die Wand eingebaut mit der eingemeisselten Inschrift: Tali- me- domanda... Eine witzige Inschrift, mit der, der Hausbe-sitzer sich an die Passanten wendet: Danke es geht mir gut.

Brijuni There are numerous archaeological sites with Roman remains on the Brijuni Islands. On the eastern coast of Veli Brijun, at Verige Bay, the largest Roman residential complex in Istria was found. It consisted of a villa rusti-ca as the nucleus of the complex, peristyle with representative ar-eas, two atriums surrounded by rooms and portico with loggias 80 m long and 6.2 m wide which ended with a large terrace with a magnificent view of the sea and entire bay. Three temples were dedicated to Neptune (god of the sea), Mars (god of war), and prob-ably Venus (goddess of love). An der Ostseite der Insel Veli Bri-jun, in der Bucht Verige, wurde der größte antische Residenz-komplex in Istrien gefunden. Er bestand aus einer villa rustica als Kern, einem Peristil mit re-präsentativen Räumen, zwei mit Räumen umhüllten Atrien, einem Portikus mit 80 m langen und 6,2m breiten Loggien, der die Tempel mit der Bibliothek ver-band, und einer großen Terrasse mit einem wunderschönen Aus-blick auf das Meer und die Bucht. Church of Blessed Virgin Mary of MercyKirchlein der Muttergottes der Barmherzigkeit FuntanaThis is an old medieval church, located on Perila at the northern entrance to Funtana. The local cemetery was situated next to it until the beginning of the 20th century. Experts believe that the church might have more than a thousand years, as indicated by the traces found during the research and restauration. The core is probably Romanesque, maybe older, but during the next centuries it was rebuilt several times. The new facade was also built, and inside the church votive graffiti of Venetian boats were found - boat drawings the sailors scratched in the walls, praying the Virgin for safe navigation or as a token of gratitude for the covenant she ful-filled. The interior includes tombs of the 17th and 18th century. The church was restored in 1998. Das Kirchlein der Muttergottes der Barmherzigkeit ist eine mittelalteriliche Kirche, die auf Perli bei dem nördlichen Eingang in Funtana liegt. Neben dieser Kirche befand sich bis zum Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts der örtliche Frtiedhof. Die Experten sagen, dass das Kirchlein wahrscheinlich mehr als tausend Jahre haben könnte, worauf die Spuren hinweisen, die bei der neulichen Forschung und Restauration gefunden worden sind. Der Kern ist wahrscheinlich aus der romanischen Zeit, vieleicht noch älter, aber sie wurde mehrmals umgebaut. Die neue Vorder-

seite wurde gebaut, und drinnen wur-den Weihgrafiten von venezianischen Schiffen gefunden- Zeichnungen von Schiffen die Seemänner in Mauern als Gebet der Guttesmutter um die sichere Schifffahrt und als Zeichen der Dank-barkeit für das erfühllte Gelöbnis aus-gekratzt haben. Im Innenteil der Kirche befinden sich die Totengruften aus dem 17. und 18. Jahrhundert. Das Kirchlein wurde im Jahr 1988 renoviert.

Umag The Medieval houses are situated in Riječka Street, which intersects the historical centre of Umag on the peninsula. An un-pretentious Gothic palace with a mullioned window from the 15th century stands on the main town square at the very beginning of the street. In the middle of the street, there is an unusual architectural structure, probably the narrowest Gothic house in Istria. The house is only a couple of meters wide, and the Gothic window on the first floor makes it even more interesting. Another surprise awaits only a few steps further down the street. A simple two-storey house, whose details show that it was built in the 16th century, is decorated with a built-in early Christian sarcophagus. If not because of the symbolic value, the sarcophagus was most likely built-in because of the aes-thetic appearance. The present-day town museum, also known as the Bishop’s tower, is a quadrangular closed building built for defensive reasons, situated on the western side of the peninsula. Before the roof was added during the 19th century, the tower had a defensive parapet. In der Mitte der Fassade des einfa-chen zweistöckigen Hauses, deren Details Merkmale der Architektur des 16. Jh. aufweisen, ist die Vorderseite eines frühchristlichen Sarko-phages eingebaut, höchstwahrscheinlich aus ästhetischen Gründen, vielleicht aber auch aus symbolischen Gründen. Am westlichen Ende der Halbinsel und des historischen Zentrums von Umag befindet sich ein rechteckiges geschlossenes Gebäude, das einst eine Festung war und in dem jetzt das Stadtmuseum untergebracht ist. Das Gebäude ist als der Bischofsturm bekannt und besaß früher, anstatt des Da-ches, das im 19. Jh. gebaut wurde, eine Brüstung zu Verteidigung.

only 10 minutes from the seashore, this tour will fill the evening hours

and reveal a new, romantic Istria to guests and inhabitants alike. In the

colours of tradition will give you an opportunity to take a short trip back in

time. Old crafts will be presented in the early evening, giving you a chance

to enjoy watching the art of making traditional artefacts. This will also be

an opportunity to taste and buy local products Brtonigla is renowned for,

like wine, olive oil, four soils bread, homemade honey and cheese... In

the colours of tradition will also have a gastronomic dimension taking the

form of occasional menus and traditional dishes. Apart from the old crafts,

varied gastronomic offer and traditional products, Brtonigla will also open

the doors of the Aleksandar Rukavina Gallery, the churches of St. Zenon,

St. Roch and All Saints in the town centre and of the building of the future

Museum of Wine and Rural Production. Entrance to the gallery and exhibi-

tions of wines and old photos of Brtonigla are free of charge. All interested

visitors have a free transportation with a nice bus, which will take you ac-

cording to a timetable, continuously every 15 minutes, from 15 to 19 hours.

The special transport line will connect the CampingIN Park Umag, villages

Karigador and Fiorini with Brtonigla and inversely.

The Ethnographic Museum of Istria systematically collects, preserves, studies and presents material connected with the po-pulation of the Istrian peninsu-la. The ethnographic collection comprises 4200 ethnographic artefacts of textile, agricultural tools, objects of everyday life from the end of the 19th cen-tury and the beginning of the 20th century (pottery, carpentry, forged objects and traditional handicrafts).Das Ethnographische Muse-um Istriens (EMI) sammelt, speichert, verarbeitet und zeigt ethnografische Objekte des täglichen Lebens der Bewohner der Halbinsel Istrien. Labin’s PasuticePasutice - die Labiner FleckerlChristmas and New Year holidays in Labin area are unthinkable without traditional pasutice served with cod fish. It was a custom for mothers and grandmas on Christmas Eve to prepare cod fish in the so-called white sauce and pasutice. Gastronomic combina-tion of Rabac sea and hand made square shaped Istrian pasta-pasutice-will captivate you with the tastes of past and evoke family tradition of gathering around the fireplace. Pasutice were made with cod fish brodetto (stew), and the fasting menu included, among the other, dried cod fish, invigorating winter lentil (soaked lentils with beans and broad breans) and cooked broskva cabbage.Die Weihnachtsfeiertage sowie die Silvesterfeier sind in der Labiner Region ohne den traditionellen paustice (heimische Fleckerln) mit Stockfisch ein-fach undenkbar. Es war Brauch, dass Mütter und Großmütter zum Heiligabend (Stockfischpastete mit Knoblauch und Olivenöl) zubereiteten. Die gastrono-mische Verbindung zwischen dem Geschmack des Meeres und den hausgemachten istrischen Nudeln in Form von kleinen, flachen Quadraten (Fleckerln) werden Sie mit ihrem Vergangenheits-Geschmack einfach überwältigen und leicht in die Stimmung der Familientradition des gemeinsamen Mahles an der Feuerstelle versetzen. Pasutice wurden auch mit Stockfisch-Brodetto gegessen, aber in der Fasten-zeit standen unter anderem auch der sog. trockene Stockfisch, gekochter Wirsing und ein erquickendes Wintergericht; (eingeweichte Linsen mit Bohnen und Saubohnen) auf dem Menü.

Istrian honey roadsHonigwinkel in IstrienThe tour of wine and olive oil roads in Istria can be rounded up by a visit to honey roads. Honey is healthy, and it is certanly worth finding out just how healthy it is. Honey spots introduce a magnificent world of diligent bees creating unique products - honey, pollen, propolis, beeswax, royal jelly. In Istria it all begins in April when beekeepers harvest fruit honey and dandeli-on honey which is extracted until May. Then the hives and beekeepers, like real nomads, move in search of locust trees that yield high quality and deli-cious honey. At the same time bees are diligently collecting sage nectar. The next activity takes place in June when hives are transferred to areas rich in chestnut trees. In mid-September the bees return home. Then they mostly sip the nectar from heather and other plants blossoming at that time. For those who don’t know much about honey making and its terminology, hon-ey extraction is the process of removing honey from the honeycomb. Die Rundfahrt über die Wein- und Olivenölstraßen in Istrien kann durch einen Besuch in den Honigwinkeln bzw. Honigstraßen ergänzt werden. Honig ist gesund, aber wie gesund - das sollte man in Erfahrung bringen. An diesen Plätzen werden Sie die wundersame Welt der fleißigen Bienen kennen lernen, die für uns wertvolle und unersetzliche Produkte herstellen - Honig, Pollen, Propolis, Wachs und royal Jelly. In Istrien beginnt alles im April, wenn die Imker den Früchtehonig und Löwenzahnhonig sammeln, der bis zum Mai geschleudert wird. Danach gehen die Bienenstöcke und die Bienenzüchter, echte Nomaden, auf Wanderschaft, nach der Suche nach Akazien, aus denen ein ausgesprochen hochwertiger und wohlschmeck-ender Honig gewonnen wird. Gleichzeitig sammeln die Bienen aber auch fleißig den Nektar aus den Salbeiblüten. Die nächste Aktion findet erst im Juni statt, wenn die Bienenstöcke in ein Gebiet gebracht werden, wo es Kastanien gibt. Mitte September kommen die Bienen wieder nach Hause.

Try the local dishes with broskva offe-red in most local restaurants of the Labin area.Während die Bora durch die Gärten von Labin peitscht, trotzt ihr der stolze Wirsing - eine an Vi-tamin C und Fasern überreiche Pflanze, die auch im Winter für unsere Gesundheit sorgt. Seit eh und je spielte der Wirsing eine wichtige Rolle in der Ernährung der Bevölkerung von Labin im Winter - kein Wunder, dass man ihn hier den Gemüsekönig nennt. Er wächst überall und wird vom ersten Frost im November bis zum Frühlingsanfang gegessen. Zubereitet wird er ähnlich wie Sauerkraut oder Sa-uerrübe. Nachdem er geputzt und gewaschen ist, wird er zuerst gekocht und dann auf Öl gebraten und mit Salz, Pfeffer und Knoblauch bestreut. Am häufigsten wird er im Winter mit warmer Polenta (Maisbrei) und Brodetto gegessen. Kosten Sie mal eine Wirsingspeise - es gibt sie in den meisten Re-staurants in Labin.

althy food, premium wines and olive oils, is beyond doubt a special thing.

That is exactly why all the MTB, trekking and road racing cyclists, from

20th to 28th of September, will be able to enjoy the special offer which

gives a special charm to the cycling - tasting of the finest agricultural

products, restaurants and taverns, along the specially determined and

marked tracks. Thereby viewpoints and enjoying the nature will receive

an extra charm. All those who dare to start this gastronomic adventure,

can expect 30 to 50 kilometers of road or mountain tracks, along which

are situated local winemakers, olive growers, taverns and agrotourism.

From 20th to 28th of Sept. all the hosts will offer a special program such

as guided tastings of products or special affordable menus for cyclists

only. If you don’t have a company for gastro tour, you have no reason

to worry because this program was designed as a ‘self guided’ which

means that you can choose your own route, place and time of depar-

ture, as well as a cycling pace. Brochures with a description of an each

route, length, altimetry and list of all hosts situated along the route can

be found in Poreč tourist office as well as at receptions of Poreč hotels.

Charming mountain tracks are based on existing official cycling tracks

so it is possible to use official signaling as a navigation assistance, whe-

reas road tracks that pass the picturesque secondary roads require an

assistance of road signaling. All proposed itineraries will be additionally

marked for the event.

Auf denjenigen der sich auf die-ses gastronomisches Abenteuer wagt warten 30 bis 50 Kilometer Strassen und Bergtrassen, entlang welcher sich einheimische Winzer, Olivenöler-zeuger, Konobas und Agrotourismus befinden. Alle genannten bereiten für die Radfahrer Sonderangebote zwischen dem 20. und dem 28. September vor, und eine von denen ist das Kosten deren Produkte oder besondere Menüs zu günstigen Preisen. Wenn Sie keine Gesellschaft für den Rund-gang der Gastro-Wege haben, machen Sie sich keine Sorgen, weil dieses Programm als „self guided“ erstellt wurde, so dass Sie selber Ihre Strecke, Ort und Startzeit wählen können, aber Sie können auch Ihr Tempo wählen. Histria Aromatica is situated on a hill Pižanovac near the village Golaš near Bale. It is a spacious arboretum and a kind of theme park about indigenous, healing, aromatic and spicy Mediterranean herbs. Beautiful fields of lavender, mint, chamomile, marigold, sage, as well as the olive grove and vineyard rem-iniscent of the old rural households which are typical for Istrian region. Around the hills and between the terraces the dry walls were built, there are the renewed walking paths, as well as the rest areas. There is a view from the top of the hill towards the entire Rovinj and Vodnjan coastal area and from the other side there is a view towards Učka. The goal of staying in the park is to awake the human senses and comprehension: the scent, hear-ing, smell, taste and touch. Scents and spices have healing and vitalizing effect. Medicinal and aromatic plants can be tasted in various delicacies at the outdoor and indoor space which depends on the season.

Histria Aromatica befindet sich auf dem Hügel Pižanovac nahe dem Dorf Golaš neben der Ortschaft Bale - es handelt sich um ein geräumiges Arboretum und eine Art Themenpark mit typischen, Heil- und Aro-mapflanzen sowie mediterranen Kräutern. Die wunderschönen Felder voller Lavendel, Pfefferminze, Kamille, Ringelblume, Salbei so-wie die anliegenden Olivenhaine und Wein-berge erinnern an die alten Bauernhäuser, die typisch für die istrische Region sind. Rund um den Hügel sind terrassenartig Trockenmau-ern erbaut, zwischen denen Wege und Er-holungsplätze angelegt wurden. Auf der Hü-gelspitze biete sich einem ein herrlicher Blick auf die gesamte Küstenregion vor Rovinj und Vodnjan und auf der anderen Seite sieht man den Gipfel Učka. Das Ziel eines Aufenthaltes im Park ist es, die menschlichen Sinne und Wahrnehmung zu wecken: riechen, hören, schmecken und ertasten. Die Gerüche und Gewürze bewirken heilende und vitalisieren-de Kräfte. Die Heil-und Gewürzpflanzen kön-nen saisonbedingt in den unterschiedlichs-ten Spezialitäten gekostet werden, im Freien oder auch geschlossenen Raum.

Aquarium PulaFort Verudella, PulaMediterraneanOn the first floor of the Aquarium visitors can find the Mediterranean exhibition, where animals that are rarely or never seen in the North Adri-atic reside. They prefer slightly warmer sea tem-perature, and therefore are more often found in the South Adriatic, or the warmer Mediterrane-an, respectively. The biggest fish are usually the first to draw attention, so the Dusky grouper with its big mouth, the snake-like Muraenasand the sharp-toothed Triggerfish are quickly noticed by most visitors. The Mediterranean, much like this exhibition, is filled with a variety of colourful fish resembling those found in the tropical seas, like the Swallowtail seaperch, Cardinalfish, Boar fish, Spinefish and Ornate wrasse. It is also important to mention a newcomer to the Mediterrane-an, the Guinean puffer, whose presence in the Aquarium emphasizes the problem of invasive species entering the Mediterranean in ever-in-creasing numbers.MittelmeerIm Obergeschoß des Aquariums Pula können die Besucher die Mittelmeerausstellung besichti-gen, in der sie Tierarten sehen, die sich selten oder nie im nördlichen Teil des Mittelmeeres befinden. Das sind Arten, die etwas wärmere Temperaturen bevorzugen und deswegen mehr im südlichen Teil der Adria, bzw. im warmem Mittelmeer zu finden sind. Die ersten Fische, die dem Besucher ins Auge fallen, sind die größten, weswegen die Besucher zuerst die großmäu-

ligen Zackenbarsche, die schlangenähnlichen Moränen und den zahnigen Drückerfisch bemer-ken. Das Mittelmeer und somit auch diese Aus-stellung ist reich an Fischen mit wunderbaren Farben wie der Mittelmeer-Fahnenbarsch, der Meerbarbekönig, der Eberfisch, der gewöhnliche Schnepfenfisch, der Meerpfau, dies sind herrlich bunte Arten wie die tropischen Fische. Wichtig zu erwähnen ist noch ein neuangekommener Bewohner des Mittelmeeres, der braune Kugel-fisch. Speleo adventure in the Pazin CaveThe Pazin Cave is a speleological object which is protected by law and it’s not arranged for tourist visits. Istra Speleological Association and Natura Histrica will take you into the under-ground of the Pazin Cave throughout the year depending on weather conditions and upon re-quest. The visit is organized in a natural ecologi-cal way and it gives you a unique experience of the underground. At the beginning, there is an introduction about how to use the basic equip-ment which is necessary for this speleo adven-ture. A guide will also inform you about where it is allowed to move, about possible obstacles and how to overcome them in the easiest way. There is a slight descent through trail to the can-yon in the riverbed Pazinčica. The underground part of the trail is about 200 m long and it ends with a big hall and an underground lake which length is 80 m. There is a small zip-line inside the speleological object which transfers visitors to a sandbar of the underground lake. It gives a unique dimension to the speleo adventure. The return is done on the same trail. The total height difference is approximately 118 m.Note: it is necessary to bring appropriate sport shoes and extra clothes, as well as it is recom-mended to wear light long sleeves because it’s colder inside (about 15°C); Tour duration: 3-3.5 hours; Price: 190 Kn (25 €) per person; Price in-cludes: 2 experienced guides/speleologists, hel-mets and lights. Höhlenabenteuer in der Höhle von Pazin Die Höhle von Pazin ist ein naturgeschütztes, speläo-logisches Objekt, das nicht touristisch hergerichtet ist. Der Höhlenforschungsverein Istra in Pazin führt Sie in Zusammenarbeit mit der öffentlichen Einrichtung Natura Histrica in den Untergrund der Höhle von Pazin und das während des ganzen Jahres nach vorheriger Absprache und abhängig vom Wetter. Der Besuch wird auf eine na-türliche umweltfreundliche Weise organisiert und bietet Ihnen ein einzigartiges Erlebnis in der Unterwelt. Zu Be-ginn der Tour werden Sie mit der Grundausstattung, die für Erkundung notwendig ist, bekannt gemacht und der Fachmann erklärt ihnen, wie Sie sich im Inneren der Höh-le bewegen und welche Hindernisse vorkommen sprich wie man diese am einfachsten überwindet. Dann folgt der Abstieg auf einem angelegten Wanderweg in die Schlucht zum Flussbett der Pazinčica. Der unterirdische Teil der Strecke ist etwa 200 m lang und endet in einer großen Halle mit einem unterirdischen See der 80 m lang ist. Innerhalb der Höhle befindet sich eine kleine Zip-Linie, mit der die Besucher auf die andere Seite des unterirdi-schen Sees gelangen, was diese Erkundungstour zu ei-nem einzigartigen Erlebnis macht. Nach der Besichtigung der Unterwelt geht es auf der gleichen Strecke wieder zurück. Der Gesamthöhenunterschied beträgt ca. 118 m. Hinweis: Es ist notwendig festes Sportschuhwerk zu tragen und Kleidung zum Umziehen mitzunehmen. The Light Show of Pula’s GiantsThe history of Istria is intertwined with stories of people possessing supernatural height and power - giants who lived in Istria once upon a time. Today, after many centuries, giants have once again appeared in Istria, silent, dignified and warmly welcomed. These new Istrian gi-ants have taken on modern shapes, transform-ing the cranes of Uljanik Shipyard, a symbol of the town of Pula, into colour-lit colossuses. Eight huge cranes, located in the centre of the town, are ablaze in thousands of colours. With the help of flood-lights these colours change and special effects are created that light up Pula’s night sky. This magnificent light show, lasting 15 minutes, can be seen after dark on the hour!

Die leuchtenden Riesen von PulaIstriens Geschichte ist voll von Erzählungen von überlebensgroßen und mächtigen Menschen. Die-sen Geschichten nach, sollen genau diese in Istrien gelebt haben. Heute, nach vielen Jahrtausenden, tauchen in Istrien erneut Riesen auf, ruhig und wür-devoll und freudig erwartet. Die neuen istrischen Riesen haben eine moderne Gestalt angenommen und so die Kräne der Werft Uljanik, dem Wahrzei-chen der Stadt Pula, in Lichtriesen verwandelt. Acht große Kräne leuchten im Stadtzentrum von Pula in tausenden von Farben. Mit Hilfe von Reflektoren verändern sie ihre Farbe und erzeugen Spezialef-fekte, die den Nachthimmel von Pula beleuchten. Das 15 minütige Farbspektakel kann ab Anbruch der Dunkelheit zu jeder vollen Stunde betrachtetwerden!

Soline Forest Park Parkwald Soline The green oasis of Soline Forest Park is situated between Pješčana Uvala and Vinkuran in the Municipality of Medulin. Since 1996, the Soline hill has been protected under the Nature Protection Act of the Republic of Croa-tia in the category of forest parks for its landscape value. The area has a unique biological value. Soline Forest Park is interesting for its numerous medicinal and aromatic plant species, whose scents and colours reveal the hidden charms of the Mediterranean. This is the habitat of a large num-ber of birds, insects and spiders. Butterflies are inevitable residents of this area, so that very often you can see ilex hairstreaks, scarce swallowtails, marbled whites and many others. The fairytale atmosphere of the Soline Forest Park offers a tour of the educational path ‘Soline - Mediterranean Rainforest’. The 1.3 km long path is circular, equipped with resting benches and educational panels about flora, fauna, protection of forests and the importance of preserving the biodiversity of holm oak forests.Der Parkwald Soline ist eine grüne Oase zwischen Pješčana Uvala und Vinkuran in der Gemeinde Medulin. Seit dem Jahr 1996 ist der Hügel So-line wegen ihres landschaftlichen Wertes unter dem Naturschutzgesetz der Republik Kroatien in der Kategorie eines Parkwaldes geschützt. Das Gebiet zeichnet sich durch eine außergewöhnliche biologische Verschie-denheit aus. Es ist ein Zufluchtsort zahlreicher Vögel, Insekten und Spin-nen. Die Schmetterlinge sind unausweichliche Bewohner dieses Gebiets und man kann oft den Braunen Eichen-Zipfelfalter, Segelfalter, Schach-brett und viele andere beobachten. Das märchenhafte Gefühl im Park-wald Soline bietet den Rundgang auf dem lehrhaften Spazierweg ‘Soline - mediterraner Urwald’ an. Der Spazierweg ist 1,3 Kilometer lang, rund, mit Bänken zum Ausruhen und informativen Schildern über die Flora, Fauna, Waldschutz und die Wichtigkeit des Erhalts der biologischen Verschie-denheit des Steineichenwaldes versehen.

In the small coastal town of Fažana located in the south of Istria, every child can, for a short while, become a pirate and search for lost treasure. All you need to do is to go to the Tourist Board office on the waterfront and pick up a special map, featuring the hi-storical and natural attractions of Fažana. What the children have to do is follow the di-rections on the map, visit the town’s sights and find answers to questions concerning local treasures! In der Küstenstadt Fažana im Süden Istriens kann jedes Kind für kurze Zeit zum Piraten und Jäger nach dem verlorenen Schatz werden. Es genügt, sich in den Räu-men des Tourismusverban-des an der Riva zu melden und eine spezielle Mappe mit markierten naturhistorischen Sehenswürdigkeiten Fažanas, zu übernehmen. Die Kinder sollen mit der Schatzmappe die Stadt entdecken und die Antworten auf die Fragen über die lokalen Schätze finden.
