Directions to The Boathouse

Arriving by Car

From the A3122Follow the A3122 to Dartmouth. When you reach a roundabout by a supermarket at the edge of town, take the second exit to continue on to Townstal Road/ The A3122. Follow Townstal Road for 0.7 miles, passing through a roundabout. After you pass St. Clement’s Church Hall on your right, take the second right at the signpost for Townstal Road to continue down it. Take the next left onto Mount Boone and look out for the signposted drive for Barrington House and The Penthouse on your left, surrounded by stone walls. It should be just after a small wall splits the road. If you reach a left turning for Mount Boone Way, you’ve gone a bit too far.

From the A379 (From Stoke Fleming)Follow the A379 towards Dartmouth. It should become The Ridges and then Yorke Road as you near town. When you reach a roundabout, take the second exit onto Townstal Road/the A379, going towards the town centre. Take the second right to continue along Townstal Road. Take the next left onto Mount Boone and look out for the signposted drive for Barrington House and The Penthouse on your left, surrounded by stone walls. It should be just after a small wall splits the road. If you reach a left turning for Mount Boone Way, you’ve gone a bit too far.

From the Dartmouth Ferry TerminalAfter crossing the River Dart on the ferry, take the first left onto the Rue de Courseulles Sur Mer/the A379. Next, slight right onto Ridge Hill, slighting right at the Ship in Dock Inn to follow the road uphill. Continue on as the road becomes Mount Boon. Second on your right should be the signposted drive for Barrington House and The Penthouse, surrounded by stone walls. If you reach the crossroads, you’ve gone a bit too far.

Watersports

The South Devon coastline is the perfect location for a number of watersports, including kayaking, surfing, sailing and canyoning. Here are some excellent watersports companies that operate in the area.

Kayaking and CanoeingKayaking and canoeing around Dartmouth is a great way to explore the intricate creeks that wind their way up the River Dart. You can also paddle out to sea and try your hand at some sea kayaking.

SurfingThe South Devon surf is some of the best in the country, with a number of good break spots and some more calmer bays that are perfect for beginners.

South Devon Beaches

South Devon is home to some of the UK’s best beaches, with 22 miles of sandy coastline and 20 different beaches to choose from. One of the best is Blackpool Sands, about a 8 minute drive from Barcroft Manor, where there’s a stunning white sand beach and a nice beach café and shop.

If you fancy travelling a bit further to Torquay then there are an abundance of idyllic bays, such as Torre Abbey Sands and the sandy-shale beaches around the red-clay Babbacombe Beach - a place where the locals go to escape the throngs of tourists.

Tourquay

Torquay - or the ‘English Riviera’ as it’s fondly known as - is a paradise town of palm trees, steep hills, and plentiful beaches. Weather permitting, you can enjoy a leisurely walk along the pier and promenade, ice cream in hand, and wander up the magnificent Royal Terrace Gardens, where stunning views of the harbour await. Or you can do a spot of retail therapy and visit one of Torquay’s many independent and chain shops.

Dartmouth

Dartmouth is a little quieter and smaller than Torquay, but it is still just as pleasant. The town is fast becoming the jewell of Devon, with lots of boutique shops and quality eateries popping up in the last few years. However glamorous Dartmouth is becoming, the fishing industry still beats on here though, and you can sit idly by, watching the boats come in and deliver fresh fish to the restaurants lining the water’s edge. Tomorrow’s fish, as the chef Mitch Tonks asserts, is still in the sea. Culinary highlights include The Seahorse (Tel: 01803 835147) and Rockfish (Tel: 01803 832800). To burn off your fish lunch, be sure to walk up to the gigantic Britannia Naval College, a stunning building which overlooks the town.

Totnes

Totnes prides itself on being different. Since 2006, the town has made every effort to wean itself from a dependence of peak oil. As a result, it has its own local currency - the ‘Totnes Pound’ - and makes every attempt at creating a strong localised community. There are lots of lovely shops here, and almost all are independent; you will find antique books, bespoke furniture, fine art, handmade shoes and market goods. Eateries are excellent, too, with Riverford Field Kitchen (Tel: 01803 762074) coming up trumps and Willow (Tel: 01803 862605) serving the best vegetarian food around.
