My English teacher asked me to read a book recently. Let me tell you about this book.

It is an interesting story about a young boy named John who sailed on a big ship. He didn’t know it was

a pirate ship when he first got on board. By the time he found out, it was too late. The ship had already

been sailing for many days.

Later in the book the pirates attacked some ships and robbed the passengers of their jewellery and gold.

Then, the captain buried the stolen treasure on an island. John did not like what they did. He knew it

was wrong, but he was too scared to say anything. John changed after his exciting adventures and

experiences. He came back home as a brave young man.

This children’s book, An Exciting Journey, written by Peter Peel, was certainly entertaining. Reading the

book made me want to travel someday and write adventure stories too.

Sometimes reading seems boring. It seems like we only read for school and examinations. However, An

Exciting Journey is a book that is a pleasure to read. I recommend you read more adventure books as

often as you can.

1. air pollution 4. greenhouse gases 7. deaths 10. causes

2. produce 5. fossil 8. carbon footprint

3. solar 6. conditioning 9. citizen

(ii) Fill in the Blanks & Paragraph Dictation

We use a lot of energy every day. We move about in cars, buses and boats that use fossil energy. The

food we eat needs energy to be grown. The lights and air conditioning in our homes use energy too.

The result is air pollution.

Going green starts at home, with very small changes. Turn off lights when you don’t need them. Take

public transport, or better still, walk or cycle. Buy less, and consider buying second-hand. Try talking

to your friends about doing the same things. Support each other. It is easier to be vegetarian if your

friends are too.

Dolphins are smart and friendly animals. With strong brainpower that is almost the same as humans,

they can easily be trained to do clever tricks. It is always great fun watching them in live shows waving,

jumping through hoops and catching balls. However, if these intelligent creatures could speak, they

would tell us that they are suffering greatly.

Show dolphins suffer the most because they have human-like feelings. Forced to perform day after day,

show after show, many of them are so stressed that they get sick easily. In some cases, they die.

18 Jan, 2019 (Fri) – Speaking

Part One: Phonics & Sight Words (10 marks)

Part Two: Reading Aloud (8 marks)

We use a lot of energy every day. We move about in cars, buses and boats that use fossil energy. The food

we eat needs energy to be grown. The lights and air conditioning in our homes use energy too. The result

is air pollution. One study found that air pollution causes around 30,000 deaths in Hong Kong every year.

We owe it to our neighbours to use less energy.

I decided to live with almost no carbon footprint. I get around on foot as much as I can. I don’t use the air

conditioner at home. Instead of holidays overseas, I take long hikes in local country parks. I stopped

eating meat when I learnt the meat industry produces more than 14% of all greenhouse gases. As a good

citizen, I also buy ‘carbon offsets’ that fund green projects, such as tree planting or solar power.

Dolphins are smart and friendly animals. With strong brainpower that is almost the same as humans, they

can easily be trained to do clever tricks. It is always great fun watching them in live shows waving,

jumping through hoops and catching balls. However, if these clever creatures could speak, they would tell

us that they are suffering greatly.

Caught in the open seas, wild dolphins are locked up in cell-like tanks for our entertainment. For those

born in the tanks, they spend their whole lives as prisoners. Show organisers keep saying that dolphin

shows are educational. Sure, but do you really think the audience can learn anything valuable about these

clever creatures from watching them clapping and giving ‘high-fives’?
