YOU MAY WITNESS ONE OF MANY THINGS……….

No Matter Where You Are Or What You Are Doing,

Page 3: Epilepsy Presentation

A Seizure

Page 4: Epilepsy Presentation

What Is A Seizure?

Page 5: Epilepsy Presentation

A Seizure Is A Result Of Over Activity (Too Much Communication) In The Brain Causing Violent Movement and Sometimes Unconsciousness

Page 6: Epilepsy Presentation

There Are Different Types of SeizuresTypes of Seizures

Generalized (produced by entire brain) Symptoms

Grandmal (Most common) Unconsciousness, convulsions, muscle rigidityAbsence Brief loss of consciousness or awarenessCyclonic Sporadic jerking movementsClonic Repetitive Jerking movementsTonic Muscle stiffness, rigidityAtonic Loss of muscle tone (arms and legs)

Partial (Small portion of the Brain) Symptoms

1 Simple (awareness retained)

a.) Simple Motor Jerking muscle rigidity, spasms head turning

b.) Simple Sensory Unusual sensations affecting 5 senses

c.) Simple Psychological Memory or emotional disturbance

2 Complex (impairment of awareness) Abnormalities such as lip smacking, chewing, fidgeting, and other involuntary movements

There Are Many causes for Seizures- Which is why they are so common

Chemical imbalances in the Brain Caused by:

• Alcohol• Stimulant Drugs• Low Blood Sugar• Low Oxygen• Low Blood Sodium• Low Blood Calcium• Extremely High Fevers• Withdrawal from drugs

Other Causes:•Extremely High Fevers•Defects In Genes•Birth Traumas•Infections•Head Injury•Loss of Blood•Stress•Tumor•Stroke

But sometimes there is no known cause why seizures happen; it may also be caused by Epilepsy (also known as a seizure disorder)

What Is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy Is A Disorder of The Nervous System Characterized By Recurring Seizures That Result In Sudden, Brief Changes In The Way The Brain Works.

Simplified: Abnormal Activity In The Brain Which Leads To Seizures.

A Closer Look:

Page 9: Epilepsy Presentation

Epilepsy Is Common• According to the Institute of Medicine, 1 in 26

Americans will develop epilepsy over their lifetime.

• A person who has two or more seizures is usually diagnosed with epilepsy. For people who have epilepsy, triggers that cause seizures can include stress, a lack of sleep, not taking medication, and sometimes flashing bright lights.

• Nearly 3 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with Epilepsy. That’s right, 3,000,000!

Any One Can Suffer From Seizures:

Babies Toddlers

Teenagers Adults

Page 11: Epilepsy Presentation

Life As Someone Who Suffers From Seizures Is Scary.

Treatment plans must be followed, including medication, lifestyle changes and sometimes diets or surgery.

Page 12: Epilepsy Presentation

No Caffeine

As Many of You May Already Know, Caffeine Can Cause A Rush In The Brain. This Rush Can Cause Over Activity Which Can Cause A Seizure

Page 13: Epilepsy Presentation

Eat Plenty of Fruits & Vegetables

Page 14: Epilepsy Presentation

Quick Fact:

The Ketogenic Diet, a high-fat, low carbohydrate diet, can reduce Seizure Activity. Some children who suffered from hundreds of Seizures a day became seizure free within a few weeks on this diet.

For more information on this diet, go to abcnews.com and search: “How Can A High Fat Diet Treat Epilepsy?”

Page 15: Epilepsy Presentation

Drink Plenty Of Water

Page 16: Epilepsy Presentation

Avoid Bright Lights

Bright Lights Can Be Dangerous For Children and Adults With Epilepsy By Triggering A Seizure

Page 17: Epilepsy Presentation

Life As Someone Who Suffers From Seizures Is Unpredictable

• What If I Have Seizure?• What If No One’s Around?• Can I Die?• Am I Going To Be Near Any Water Or In Any Areas Where I Can

Hurt Myself?• Who Knows What To Do In Case I Have A Seizure?• Does Any One Have My Family’s Number To Let Them Know If I

Have A Seizure?• Will I Ever Be Able To Sleep In My Own Bed?• Can I Go Away On A Trip Or Live On My Own?This Is What Runs Through the Mind of Someone Who Suffers From

Seizures Almost All The Time. It Goes For Their Loved Ones/Care Givers As Well

But There Is Hope…….

The Danny Did foundation Provides Access To Seizure Detecting Devices That Alert Others

When An a Person With Epilepsy Is Having A Seizure

They Provide Access To Freedom

Page 20: Epilepsy Presentation

What Is The Danny Did foundation?

Page 21: Epilepsy Presentation

The Danny Did foundation was founded in 2009 by Mike and Mariann Stanton with a mission to prevent death caused by seizures via the mainstreaming of Seizure detection and prevention devices, and the strengthening of the communication model between medical professionals and the families of those afflicted by epilepsy.

They also aim to spread SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy) Awareness.

Page 22: Epilepsy Presentation

Why?

Page 23: Epilepsy Presentation

Meet DannyMike and Mariann founded Danny Did in 2009 after the death of their 4-year old son Daniel George Stanton.

Danny was born on March 2nd, 2005. When Danny was two, he had his first seizure, which lasted for 10 minutes.

Page 24: Epilepsy Presentation

There was no explanation. After Danny suffered a second seizure, an MRI was done and showed no causes for it. That was a sign of a Seizure DisorderA Neurologist told Danny’s parents that he would grow out of his epilepsy. That’s all.

They were not informed about the risk of SUDEP.

Page 25: Epilepsy Presentation

Danny began to sleep with his parents and continued to suffer from seizures.

On December 8th 2009, after 18 months of being seizure free, Danny saw his Neurologist again. An EEG showed that there was still abnormal activity, but there was less activity than there was before. The medication was working. Danny’s dosage was increased, that day, to accommodate a slight weight gain.On December 12th at 7:15 am, Mike and Mariann found Danny’s body lifeless.

Page 26: Epilepsy Presentation

“Danny Did”Although Danny was only four when

he died, he lived a good life.Epilepsy didn’t stand in his way. He was athletic, cheerful, and he loved his family. He was eager to learn, and he expressed care towards everyone

Danny’s obituary, written by his dad, ends with “Please Go and Enjoy Your Life. Danny Did.” That is where the foundation gets its name from

Page 27: Epilepsy Presentation

Any One Can Have A SeizureAt Any Moment

Each year, more people die as a result of seizure than from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and fires combined.

EPILEPSY IS A NATIONAL HEALTH CRISIS AND IT MUST BE TREATED AS SUCH

Page 28: Epilepsy Presentation

So What Do You Do When Someone’s Having A seizure?

• Gently Ease The Person To The Ground• Cushion Their Head• If They Are Wearing Glasses, Remove Them• Loosen Any Tight Neckwear, Such As A Tie Or Scarf• Turn The Person On Their Side To Keep Their Airway Clear• Track Time. If The Seizure Lasts For More Than Five

Minutes, Call For Medical Assistance• Check For Epilepsy Or Seizure Disorder ID• Afterward, Reassure The Person. Allow Them To Rest, If

Necessary. Stay With The Person Until The Are Fully Awake And Reoriented

Page 29: Epilepsy Presentation

It Is CRUCIAL That You Follow Theses Steps, and that You Help

Spread Awareness

Page 30: Epilepsy Presentation

To Those Who Suffer From Seizures:

Don’t Be AshamedIt’s important that those around you know what

to do. Having Epilepsy doesn’t change who you are. Epilepsy Does NOT Limit What You Can Be. So don’t hide. Epilepsy makes you a WARRIOR
