A STRUCTURED COURSE in BATH (United Kingdom) : Teaching business English

The course

During my mobility I attended a structured

course in the city of Bath, in the UK, with only

two other trainees, who were english teachers,

entitled “Teaching Business English” hosted by

the organization “English Means Business”,

directed by Sara Helm, who is also the teacher.

The course was structured over 5 days and the

topics varied each day, also according to the

individual needs of we learners.

Il corso

Durante la mia mobilità ho frequentato un corso

strutturato nella città di Bath, nel Regno Unito,

con solo altri due corsisti, che erano insegnanti, di

inglese, intitolato “Insegnando inglese

economico” ospitato dall’organizzazione “English

Means Business”, diretto da Sara Helm che ne è

anche l’insegnante. Il corso era strutturato in 5

giorni e gli argomenti variavano ogni giorno,

anche secondo i bisogni individuali di noi

apprendenti.

Acquired skills and competences

The Monday session was based on an overview of

necessary skills in the Business area, for example the

“information exchange”, that was put in practice

between me and the other trainees about our

teaching-experiences and that gave me the

opportunity of verifying, developing and putting into

practice my active-listening skills, checking and

clarifying skills, as well as my linguistic competences

in English.

The other lessons days focused on business topics

and vocabulary games of different departments

(Human Resources, Finance or Marketing and

activities, as for example e-mailing, telephoning, etc.

The skill I more developed was that of

“interviewing” because I put it in practice by

interviewing my two course colleagues about their

teaching experiences, but especially by preparing and

exposing the questions of the interview to the

Internship Manager of the Bath College about the

work placement in the UK.

Le competenze e abilità acquisite

La sessione di lunedì si basava su una panoramica

delle abilità necessarie per agire nel settore del

business, per esempio lo “scambio di informazioni” ,

che fu messo in pratica tra me e gli altri corsisti

riguardo le nostre esperienze di insegnamento e che mi

diede l’opportunità di verificare, sviluppare e mettere

in pratica le mie abilità di ascolto attivo, verificare e

chiarire, così come le mie competenze linguistiche in

inglese.

Gli altri giorni di lezione erano focalizzati su

argomenti e giochi sul lessico del business di differenti

ambiti (Risorse Umane, Finanza, o Marketing) e su

attività quali, spedire e-mail, telefonare, ecc.

L’abilità che ho più sviluppato è stata quella di

“intervistare” poiché l’ho messa in pratica

intervistando i miei due compagni di corso riguardo le

loro esperienze, ma specialmente preparando e

esponendo le domande dell’intervista al dirigente del

tirocinio del Bath College riguardo l’Alternanza

scuola lavoro nel Regno Unito.

The results of my mobility

During my stay in Bath it took place the “Open

evening” in the Bath college so that I could visit it

and it was very interesting since I had the opportunity

Durante la mia permanenza a Bath ebbe luogo la

“Scuola aperta di sera” nel College di Bath cosi io

potei visitarlo e fu molto interessante poiché ebbi

to discover how they organize the work-based learning.

So, we, trainees and teacher, visited the “Bath College

open evening”, we could see the presentation of the

courses and listen to the Manager Rob Aldous

exposing about what apprenticeship is in UK, namely,

according to his words “a paid job with training

leading to qualifications that relates to a job”.

Moreover, we could video recording an interview to

him in which he explained us with details how the

British work experience is organized.

Pupils have their first work placement when they are

16 years old with the first level apprenticeship,

working 4 days a week and receiving a minimum pay

of 3,45 pounds the hour for it. There are different

levels of apprenticeship, according to the period and

the grade of the apprentice, that are available not only

for young people, but for any age people (an

intermediate level - from 12 to 18 months and a grade

between A and C; an advanced level – from 18 to 48

months , a higher level – of more than 24 months.

The experience in the Bath college has been very

important for me because it gave me the opportunity of

observing directly a very big secondary vocational

high school in Great Britain and of having direct

knowledge of the work placement system and of

comparing it to the Italian one.

Così noi, allievi e insegnante, visitammo il College di

Bath, potemmo vedere la presentazione dei corsi e

ascoltare il Manager Rob Aldouus esporre cosa sia il

tirocinio nel Regno Unito, ossia, secondo le sue parole,

“un lavoro remunerato con formazione che porta a

qualifiche relative ad un lavoro”.

Inoltre noi potemmo filmare un’intervista fattagli in

cui ci spiegava nel dettaglio come è organizzata

Gli allievi fanno la loro prima alternanza all’età di 16

anni con il primo livello di tirocinio, lavorando giorni

alla settimana e ricevendo una paga minima di 3,45

Pounds all’ora. Ci sono diversi livelli di tirocinio,

asseconda del periodo e del grado di valutazione

dell’apprendente, che non sono disponibili solo per

giovani, ma per persone di ogni età (un livello

intermedio – dai 12 ai 18 mesi e voto tra A e C, un

livello avanzato -fai 18 ai 48 mesi, un livello più alto –

di più di 24 mesi.

L’esperienza nel College di Bath è stata molto

importante per me perché mi ha dato l’opportunità di

osservare direttamente unità di osservare una scuola

superiore professionale molto grande e di avere una

conoscenza diretta del sistema di alternanza e di

confrontarlo con il sistema italiano.

Dissemination and impact

A far as the dissemination concerns, I relayed to other

teachers of my school my learning experience, I shares

with my colleagues of English and on the website of

the school the course material about business soft skills

and some skills-based modules on business vocabulary

in English.

Even if I’m not an English teacher, since I teach

Spanish, I have been able to apply to my lessons the

methodologies I’ve learned, moreover I’ve shared with

my English teaching colleagues.

Moreover, in the month of May I disseminated the

results of my observation also outside by means of a

Power Point presentation in a meeting in the Regional

building at the presence of teachers of other institutions

and a manager of the “Ufficio Scolastico Provinciale”

of Milan.

Next year I’m going to organize a dissemination

workshop addressed to the students and their tutors of

who will choose to do an “Impresa Formativa

Simulata” in order to provide them some base

competences and skills that are necessary to start up an

“IFS"

This experience made improve linguistic English

competences - especially in the use of vocabulary - and

communication skills in English (oral comprehension,

Per quanto riguarda la disseminazione, io ho riportato

ad altri insegnanti della mia scuola la mia esperienza di

insegnamento, ho condiviso con le mie colleghe di

inglese e sul sito dell’istituto il materiale del corso

sulle soft skills del business e delle schede sul lessico

del business.

Anche se non sono un’insegnante di inglese, dato che

insegno spagnolo, ho applicato alle mie lezioni le

metodologie apprese.

Inoltre, nel mese di maggio, ho dissimulato i risultati

della mia osservazione anche all’esterno per mezzo di

una presentazione in Power Point in un incontro nel

palazzo della Regione alla presenza di insegnanti di

altri istituti e un manager dell’Ufficio scolastico

Provinciale” di Milano.

Il prossimo anno organizzerò un incontro di

disseminazione rivolto agli studenti e i loro tutors che

sceglieranno di fare un’Impresa Formativa Simulata

per fornirgli alcune competenze di base e le abilità che

sono necessarie ad avviare una IFS.

Questa esperienza ha fatto migliorare le mie

competenze linguistiche - specialmente nell’uso del

lessico – e le abilità comunicative in inglese

(comprensione orale, fluidità del discorso, ecc.).

The continue interaction with the course teacher and

the other trainees gave me the opportunity to exchange

ideas and information, in particular way with a teacher

of a German school (Thorsten Webber of the economic

high school of Whorms), with whom there would be a

collaboration in the future for a future Erasmus project

or a student exchange.

In conclusion, doing a mobility period abroad was very

useful to increase my social, linguistic and cultural

competences, to gain practical skills to develop new

learning practices and teaching methods, to make new

contacts and extend my professional network, to learn

from good practices of a foreigner school, to share my

own knowledge and skills with other persons, to

increase my job satisfaction.

La continua interazione con l’insegnante e gli altri

corsisti mi ha dato l’opportunità di scambiare idee e

informazioni, in particolar modo con un insegnante di

una scuola tedesca (Thorsten Webber dell’istituto

superiore economico di Whorms), con cui ci potrebbe

esserci una collaborazione per un futuro progetto

Erasmus o scambi tra studenti.

In conclusione, fare un periodo di mobilità all’estero è

stato molto utile per migliorare le mie competenze

sociali, linguistiche e culturali, per acquisire abilità

pratiche per sviluppare nuove pratiche e metodi di

insegnamento, prendere nuovi contatti, e ampliare la

mia rete di relazioni professionali, per imparare da

buone pratiche di una scuola straniera, per condividere

le mie conoscenze e abilità con altre persone, per

aumentare la mia soddisfazione nel lavoro.
