GUIDELINES FOR CONDUCT OF STUDENTS ON SCHOOL BUSES

School bus transportation is a privilege provided to each eligible student by the Algoma District School Board provided the student adheres to the rules of conduct. This policy does not supersede, but is an addendum to, the Safe Schools Policy and the School’s Code of Conduct.

Expectations At The Bus Stop We expect students to conduct themselves in the same way as if they were waiting for public transit.

1. Remain off the roadway while waiting for the bus;

2. Walk toward the bus to get on only after the bus has come to a complete stop;

3. Keep your hands and your entire body to yourself, which means no pushing or shoving while

waiting for the bus and while entering or leaving the bus;

4. Use good manners, which means no aggressive or threatening behaviour towards other

people, including no swearing, spitting, taking someone’s hat or other belonging.

5. Follow instructions of the teacher, bus patroller and crossing guard in a respectful manner.

Expectations On The Bus

We expect students to behave in the same way as if they were travelling on the public transit bus. 1. Stay seated while the bus is moving;

2. Do not shout, be loud, or do anything else that distracts the driver’s attention from the road;

3. Use good manners, which means no aggressive or threatening behaviour towards other

people, including no swearing, hitting, spitting, taking someone’s hat or other belonging;

4. Do not throw objects in the bus or outside from a bus window.

5. No food of any kind (and that includes gum) is allowed on the bus.

6. Follow the direction of the bus driver and/or safety patroller is a respectful manner.

CODE OF CONDUCT ON SCHOOL BUSES

Students are expected to behave at the bus stop and on the school bus in the same way as if they were at school. This means behaving at all times in a courteous, polite manner and

respecting and following the directions of the bus driver.

In the case of misbehaviour, the Bus Driver or the Transportation Officer shall give a written report of such misbehaviour to the Principal.

Page 4: Esten Park Public School - adsb.on.ca 2017 - first... · Pledge forms will be sent home. School Council Volunteer Form ... student by the Algoma District School Board provided the

CONSEQUENCES

First Offence: The Principal may provide a warning or suspend the bus privilege for a period of up to three (3) school days.

Second Offence: The Principal will suspend the bus privilege for a period of up to three to five (3 – 5) school days.

Third Offence: The Principal will suspend the bus privilege for a minimum of ten (10) days and up to the balance of the school year.

Any subsequent offence will result in the loss of bus privileges for the remainder of the school year.

ROLE OF THE PARENTS

- parents are responsible for the safety and behaviour of their children prior to pick-up and following drop-off at the end of the school day.

- parents are responsible to provide alternate transportation for their children should they lose their bus privileges.

- parents shall advise their children on an ongoing basis of the rules and regulations to be observed when riding a school bus.

ROLE OF THE STUDENTS

Every student is responsible to the principal of the school for his or her conduct while travelling on a school bus, and at the bus stop.

THE SAFETY OF OUR CHILDREN CANNOT BE COMPROMISED.

I have received, read, and discussed the Algoma District School Board’s procedures regarding School Bus Safety with my child.

September, 2017

A new school year begins! We hope that everyone has enjoyed this wonderful summer.

We welcome new faces to our school community, Mr. Clayton, our new Arts & DPA Teacher, Miss Crack, our new grade 4/5 English & Phys Ed Teacher and Mlle Beach, our new Health Teacher. Welcome back to Mme Wilson and Mrs. Sturgeon.

Mr. Paradis and Mr. Pelletier worked very hard to prepare the school for us. We are ready. We hope that all our students are rested and ready for the adventure of their new grade.

Along with this newsletter, you will receive a “Student Registration Verification” form. Please review the form carefully, correct any errors that you notice, sign and return the form to school. This will help ensure that the information in our data base is as accurate as possible.

There are also some forms to complete. Please complete, sign and return all the forms to school by Thursday, September 7. All students must review, agree with, and sign the Bus Conduct form. The bus rules apply to daily bus travel and school trips.

Please note, this is the only paper copy of the newsletter sent home. Newsletters and other notes are sent via email. If we do not have an up-to-date email address for your family, please update your student information form attached to this newsletter.

We have students and staff members with Peanut and Nut allergies in our school. For this reason, we have a Peanut and Nut Free Policy. We request that all snacks, lunches and other foods used at school be nut / peanut free. This includes avoiding products that indicate that they have been processed in a facility that processes nuts or warnings that

products may have come into contact with nuts. Please read all labels carefully every time you purchase lunch and snack items before sending to school in your child’s lunch kit. As always, we encourage students to focus on healthy snacks such as Fruits and Vegetables. Pop and other high sugar drinks are not appropriate beverages for school. Students are encouraged to drink milk, 100% fruit juices or water. Students may bring a refillable water bottle to school.

We also ask that you avoid strong “scents” as many students are sensitive. We appreciate your cooperation in these matters.

We continue the milk and pizza program. Milk, both white and chocolate, cost $0.75 per 250 ml container. Pizza is $1.50 per slice. The Milk Program begins September 5, the Pizza Program begins September 15.

The Algoma District School Board continues the Voluntary Self-Identification for Aboriginal Students program. Students, Parents, Guardians and Staff have the opportunity to self-identify as a person of Aboriginal descent (Aboriginal, Inuit or Métis). For more information, please contact the school. The goal of the program is to enhance learning for our Aboriginal students across the Algoma District School Board through additional support.

If you have questions, or if we can be of further assistance, contact us at 705 848-2601.

School Day Schedule

8:25 a.m. – School Entry 8:30 a.m. – Classes Begin 10:00 – 10:15 a.m. – Recess 11:15 a.m. – 11:40 a.m. – Recess 11:40 a.m. – 12:05 p.m. – Lunch 1:35 p.m. – 1:50 p.m. – Recess 2:50 p.m. - Dismissal

Upon arrival, students proceed directly to their classrooms. Students who walk to school should plan on arriving for 8:25 am. Students should not arrive at school prior to this time.

Students who eat lunch at school are not permitted to leave school property during the lunch break. Please note – we do not have a microwave oven available for student use.

Student Safety All visitors and parents are required to enter the school via the main entrance on Hergott Avenue. For your convenience, Visitor Parking is available on Hergott Avenue. Security cameras and intercoms are in place for student safety. When you arrive at the entrance, please push the intercom button and we will speak with you, check the monitor, and “buzz” you in. We ask for your patience in this matter.

We continue to welcome parents into the building. However, because of our on-going concern for student safety, it is Board policy that all visitors in the building must first report to the office upon entering the school. This includes parents, volunteers, visitors and maintenance workers. We request that parents do not proceed directly to their child’s classroom. You will be asked to sign in and out when you are visiting our school. All visitors in our school will be identified with a pass / tag. Adults without tags will be redirected to the main office in order to sign in and receive a pass / tag. As always, we will deal will matters with as little interruption as possible to classes and school routines. By following this easy procedure, we can make our school a safer environment.

If you are picking up your child “early” – please come directly to the office. Your child will have to “sign out” prior to leaving the school. Students who must leave school during the school day, without a parent/guardian present, require a note and will have to “sign out” at the office and “sign in” upon their return in order to ensure their whereabouts.

Students who arrive late, must also “sign in” at the office. A late pass will be issued by the office. In both instances, a note from a parent/ guardian or a call to the school is required.

Electronic Devices Please note that all cell phones brought to school by students will be “parked” on the teacher’s desk upon entry. Students will be allowed to use their cell phones when needed for research or as a calculator. Student use of cell phones is not permitted during recess and lunch. We encourage students to participate in face to face communication while they attend school. Students may bring electronic learning devices when permitted by the classroom teacher or as listed in their “Individual Education Plan – IEP”. Students must abide by school rules when using all electronic devices. Acceptable electronic devices include e-readers, notebooks, tablets and laptops.

The school assumes no responsibility for personal property.

For the privacy of our students, all electronic devices are not allowed in restricted areas. We are committed to ensuring an environment conducive to learning and to the protection of privacy. Restricted areas include instructional areas and any location requiring privacy such as washrooms, change rooms, dressing rooms, etc.

Safe Arrival Program On a day that your child is absent, please telephone the school (705 848-2601). You can leave a message on the voice mail if calling before 8:00 a.m. or speak with school staff after 8:00 a.m. If your child is absent and we have not received a message, the school staff will call home, the work number, and/or the emergency number. This is to ensure the safety of all students. A note explaining a student’s absence is appreciated. The note is given to the child’s teacher.

Medication at School Policy There are times when a student needs to be given medication while at school. We do not encourage this practice; however, when necessary, two forms must be completed – a “Physician’s Authorization” form and a “Parent/Guardian Consent Form”. The Board Policy 6.55 – Administration of Medication at School requires the completion of these forms. Copies of the policy, Authorization and Consent forms are available from our office. Both forms must be completed every school year. Without both the signed request forms, we cannot dispense medication of any kind. This policy also applies to patent medicines such as aspirin/Tylenol/Advil, cough medicines (including cough drops/Halls), as well as prescription

medications. Some students are highly allergic to these medications, which warrants their exclusion from the pockets of our students. All medication (including cough drops/Halls) will be stored in the office. Please call the main office at your convenience if you require more information and/or forms.

Anaphylaxis If your child has a serious allergic condition, please advise the school. Parents are responsible to advise the school of their child’s condition and provide us with the appropriate medication such as an Epi Pen.

MedicAlert – no child without The Canadian MedicAlert Foundation provides free medical identification services for elementary school children from the ages of 4 to 14. If your child would benefit from this service, please call the main office at 705 848-2601.

Traffic and Bus Safety Riding the Bus is a “privilege”. The school bus is an extension of the school. All bus students are therefore responsible to the principal for their behaviour. A Bus Safety Consent Form will be sent home with your child this week. Please complete and return the consents section attached to this newsletter. Completed forms should be returned to the classroom teacher by Thursday, September 7.

Parents/guardians are encouraged to accompany their child to the bus stop and/or monitor what is happening at their child’s bus stop. If you become aware of a bus stop or on the bus problem, please contact the school Principal. To ensure safety, it is essential that our students follow traffic and bus safety rules.

For more information about Bus Stops and Bus Cancellations, go to www.adsb.on.ca – click on “Transportation”.

Students in the younger grades will be walking a shorter – age appropriate distance. There will be a warm up at 1:50 p.m. on the tarmac. Everyone from our School Community is invited to participate in this event. No fundraising is needed to walk/run with us. However, a donation box will be available if you wish to contribute. If you wish to have your child “collect sponsors”, please complete the appropriate section of the consent form and a pledge sheet will be sent home with your child.

Technology Equipment and Internet Access

Our school continues to invest in technology. As such, students are expected to treat all school equipment with care and respect. We appreciate your support in reinforcing these values at home with your children. Students have access to the Internet in their classroom. Students will be asked to agree to abide by our policies each time they use our technology. This will be in the form of an information screen and an “I Accept” tab.

School Supplies and Valuable items at school Every year, students “leave behind” clothing, toys and school supplies. Our “Lost and Found” becomes full in a very short time. Students should have their name on all their personal belongings. Valuable items should be left at home.

Student Agendas Students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 received school agendas today. The student share of the cost for these agendas is $4.00. Students should bring their agenda money to their classroom teacher.

Student accident insurance Please note, the School Board does not have accident insurance for students. Parents are strongly encouraged to consider the package from Reliable Insurance Company sent home with your child. They offer student accident insurance at a reasonable rate. If you are interested, applications are to be sent, postage paid, directly to the company.
