Reflection

In today’s Gospel, we hear the story of the wid-ow’s mite. Although the widow gave a gift to the treasury worth only a few cents, Jesus states that because it was as much as she could give, it was worth more than all the other (larger) gifts.

Living Stewardship~ Pillar of Service

As we enter the month of November, give thanks to God for all He has done for you. Consider making a gift to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, and help your brothers and sisters in need.

Love God … Love Neighbour ...

October, the month dedicated to Our Lady Queen of the Most Holy Rosary ended – as it always does – on 31 October. (Thirty days have September, April, June and November. Thirty-one have all the rest; except February which ...) This year, that date fell on a Sunday; the Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time, and in the Gospel for the day, Sunday Mass-goers should have heard Jesus tell “one of the scribes” in answer to his ques on that, there is no other Commandment greater than to: love God with your whole heart, mind, soul, and strength and to love your neighbour as yourself (cf. Saint Mark XII:28-31).

It is in the Rosary (which is prayed at 8:45 A.M. Monday through Saturday in Saint Catherine of Sienna church) where we can discover the way to keep those Commandments; and our fingers do not have to journey very far along the beads, before we make that discovery. In the very first Joyful Mystery, the Annuncia on, Mary manifests love for God with her response to the Archangel Gabriel: “let it be done unto me according to Thy word”, and in the second Joyful Mystery, the Visita on, Mary manifests love for neighbour when she proceeds in haste into the hill country to bring Saint Elizabeth the Presence of God within her!

Fast forward along those beads to the first Sorrowful Mystery, the Agony in the Garden, and Jesus (Who is the Incarna on of love) teaches us love for God saying: “not My will but Thine be done”, and soon therea er in the fi h Sorrowful Mystery, the Crucifixion, enfleshes love for neighbour with His intercessory words: “Father forgive them for they know not what they do”.

The Wisdom of the Holy Spirit arranged it so that the very next day a er hearing Jesus say at Mass on 31 October 2021: “Love God … love neighbour …”, the Church on 1 November would celebrate All Saints’ Day, and on that day, call to mind for whoever has ears to hear, “a great mul tude, which no one could count, from every na on, race, people, and tongue” (Revela on VII:9a); all the men and women who went before us through death and now “stand before the throne and the Lamb” (ibid. VII:9b); the men and women who while on earth, discovered love and shared their discovery with others. The men and women we call Saints!

One day a er that celebra on of all the Saints from Anthony to Zacchaeus, during which we turned to our canonized family members and asked them to “pray for us”, the Church calls all ye faithful on 2 November/All Souls Day, to pray for the non-canonized members of our families; the men and women we called dad and mom, brother and sister, son and daughter, husband and wife. As saintly as their lives may have appeared to us on earth, we know from our own failures as men and women, dads and moms, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters, husbands and wives that some mes they failed to love God and neighbour according to the Commandments. And so it is that on that day we remember them solemnly at Holy Mass in memory of Him Who suffered, died, and rose from the dead so that through Him, with Him, and in Him they also will rise again!

O Gentlest Heart of Jesus, Ever present in the Blessed Sacrament,

ever consumed with burning love for the poor captive souls in Purgatory,

have mercy on the souls of Thy departed servants.

(state name) Be not severe in Thy judgment,

but let some drops of Thy most precious Blood fall upon the devouring flames

and do Thou, O Merciful Saviour, send Thy angels to conduct

Thy departed servants to a place of refreshment, light and peace.

Amen.

INSTRUCTION AD RESURGENDUM CUM CHRISTO REGARDING THE BURIAL OF THE DECEASED AND THE CONSERVATION

OF THE ASHES IN THE CASE OF CREMATION The following is the full text of the Instruc on of the Congrega on for the Doctrine of the Faith, “Ad resurgendum cum Christo”, regarding the burial of the deceased and the conserva on of the ashes in the case of crema on, published today and signed by Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller and Archbishop Luis Francisco Ladaria Ferrer, respec vely prefect and secretary of the dicastery.

1. To rise with Christ, we must die with Christ: we must “be away from the body and at home with the Lord”. With the Instruc on Piam et Constantem of 5 July 1963, the then Holy Office established that “all necessary measures must be taken to preserve the prac ce of reverently burying the faithful departed”, adding however that crema on is not “opposed per se to the Chris an religion” and that no longer should the sacraments and funeral rites be denied to those who have asked that they be cremated, under the condi on that this choice has not been made through “a denial of Chris an dogmas, the animosity of a secret society, or hatred of the Catholic religion and the ”. Later this change in ecclesias cal discipline was incorporated into the Code of Canon Law (1983) and the Code of Canons of Oriental Churches (1990).

During the intervening years, the prac ce of crema on has notably increased in many countries, but simultaneously new ideas contrary to the Church’s faith have also become widespread. Having consulted the

Congrega on for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, the Pon fical Council for Legisla ve Texts and numerous Episcopal Conferences and Synods of Bishops of the Oriental Churches, the Congrega on for the Doctrine of the Faith has deemed opportune the publica on of a new Instruc on, with the inten on of underlining the doctrinal and pastoral reasons for the preference of the burial of the remains of the faithful and to set out norms pertaining to the conserva on of ashes in the case of crema on.

2. The Resurrec on of Jesus is the culmina ng truth of the Chris an faith, preached as an essen al part of the Paschal Mystery from the very beginnings of Chris anity: “For I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures; that He was buried; that He was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures; that He appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve”.

Through His Death and Resurrec on, Christ freed us from sin and gave us access to a new life, “so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life”. Furthermore, the risen Christ is the principle and source of our future resurrec on: “Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep […] For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive”.

It is true that Christ will raise us up on the last day; but it is also true that, in a certain way, we have already risen with Christ. In Bap sm, actually, we are immersed in the Death and Resurrec on of Christ and sacramentally assimilated to Him: “You were buried with Him in Bap sm, in which you were also raised with Him through faith in the power of God, Who raised Him from the dead”. United with Christ

Because of Christ, Chris an death has a posi ve meaning. The Chris an vision of death receives privileged expression in the liturgy of the Church: “Indeed for your faithful, Lord, life is changed not ended, and, when this earthly dwelling turns to dust, an eternal dwelling is made ready for them in Heaven”. By death the soul is separated from the body, but in the resurrec on God will give incorrup ble life to our body, transformed by reunion with our soul. In our own day also, the Church is called to proclaim her faith in the Resurrec on: “The confidence of Chris ans is the resurrec on of the dead; believing this we live”.

3. Following the most ancient Chris an tradi on, the Church insistently recommends that the bodies of the deceased be buried in cemeteries or other sacred places.

In memory of the Death, burial and Resurrec on of the Lord, the mystery that illumines the Chris an meaning of death, burial is above all the most fi ng way to express faith and hope in the resurrec on of the body.

The Church who, as Mother, has accompanied the Chris an during his earthly pilgrimage, offers to the Father, in Christ, the child of her grace, and she commits to the earth, in hope, the seed of the body that will rise in glory.

By burying the bodies of the faithful, the Church confirms her faith in the resurrec on of the body, and intends to show the great dignity of the human body as an integral part of the human person whose body forms part of their iden ty. She cannot, therefore, condone a tudes or permit rites that involve erroneous ideas about death, such as considering death as the defini ve annihila on of the person, or the moment of fusion with Mother Nature or the universe, or as a stage in the cycle of regenera on, or as the defini ve libera on from the “prison” of the body.

Furthermore, burial in a cemetery or another sacred place adequately corresponds to the piety and respect owed to the bodies of the faithful departed who through Bap sm have become temples of the Holy Spirit and in which “as instruments and vessels the Spirit has carried out so many good works”.

Tobias, the just, was praised for the merits he acquired in the sight of God for having buried the dead, and the Church considers the burial of dead one of the corporal works of mercy.

Finally, the burial of the faithful departed in cemeteries or other sacred places encourages family members and the whole Chris an community to pray for and remember the dead, while at the same

me fostering the venera on of martyr and saints.

Through the prac ce of burying the dead in cemeteries, in churches or their environs, Chris an tradi on has upheld the rela onship between the living and the dead and has opposed any tendency to minimize, or relegate to the purely private sphere, the event of death and the meaning it has for Chris ans.

4. In circumstances when crema on is chosen because of sanitary, economic or social considera ons, this choice must never violate the explicitly-stated or the reasonably inferable wishes of the deceased faithful. The Church raises no doctrinal objec ons to this prac ce, since crema on of the deceased’s body does not affect his or her soul, nor does it prevent God, in his omnipotence, from raising up the deceased body to new life. Thus crema on, in and of itself, objec vely negates neither the Chris an doctrine of the soul’s immortality nor that of the resurrec on of the body.

The Church con nues to prefer the prac ce of burying the bodies of the deceased, because this shows a greater esteem towards the deceased. Nevertheless, crema on is not prohibited, “unless it was chosen for reasons contrary to Chris an doctrine”.

In the absence of mo ves contrary to Chris an doctrine, the Church, a er the celebra on of the funeral rite, accompanies the choice of crema on, providing the relevant liturgical and pastoral direc ves, and taking par cular care to avoid every form of scandal or the appearance of religious indifferen sm.

5. When, for legi mate mo ves, crema on of the body has been chosen, the ashes of the faithful must be laid to rest in a sacred place, that is, in a cemetery or, in certain cases, in a church or an area, which has been set aside for this purpose, and so dedicated by the competent ecclesial authority. From the earliest mes, Chris ans have desired that the faithful departed become the objects of the Chris an community’s prayers and remembrance. Their tombs have become places of prayer, remembrance and reflec on. The faithful departed remain part of the Church who believes “in the communion of all the faithful of Christ, those who are pilgrims on earth, the dead who are being purified, and the blessed in heaven, all together forming one Church”.

The reserva on of the ashes of the departed in a sacred place ensures that they are not excluded from the prayers and remembrance of their family or the Chris an community. It prevents the faithful departed from being forgo en, or their remains from being shown a lack of respect, which eventuality is possible, most especially once the immediately subsequent genera on has too passed away. Also it prevents any unfi ng or supers ous prac ces.

6. For the reasons given above, the conserva on of the ashes of the departed in a domes c residence is not permi ed. Only in grave and excep onal cases dependent on cultural condi ons of a localized nature, may the Ordinary, in agreement with the Episcopal Conference or the Synod of Bishops of the Oriental Churches, concede permission for the conserva on of the ashes of the departed in a domes c residence. Nonetheless, the ashes may not be divided among various family members and due respect must be maintained regarding the circumstances of such a conserva on.

7. In order that every appearance of pantheism, naturalism or nihilism be avoided, it is not permi ed to sca er the ashes of the faithful departed in the air, on land, at sea or in some other way, nor may they be preserved in mementos, pieces of jewelry or other objects. These courses of ac on cannot be legi mized by an appeal to the sanitary, social, or economic mo ves that may have occasioned the choice of crema on. 8. When the deceased notoriously has requested crema on and the sca ering of their ashes for reasons contrary to the Chris an faith, a Chris an funeral must be denied to that person according to the norms of the law. The Sovereign Pon ff Francis, in the Audience granted to the undersigned Cardinal Prefect on 18 March 2016, approved the present Instruc on, adopted in the Ordinary Session of this Congrega on on 2 March 2016, and ordered its publica on.

Rome, from the Offices of the Congrega on for the Doctrine of the Faith, 15 August 2016, the Solemnity of the Assump on of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Pope Francis shared: "Saints are witnesses whom we venerate and who in thousands of different ways bring us to Jesus Christ, the only Lord and Mediator between God and humanity. They remind us that holiness can blossom even in our lives, however weak and marked by sin." Celebrate lives of Saints this week, consider a ending Holy Mass on their Feast Days, and/or offering these prayers taken from the Roman Missal:

As we near the end of the liturgical season of Ordinary Time we begin preparing for the Season of Advent. Advent is a season of prepara on — a me of expectant wai ng and planning for both the celebra on of the Na vity of Christ at Christmas and the return of Christ at the Second Coming.

The liturgical environment changes with each season and planning is needed. It is during Advent we prepare our sacred space for Christmas de or Season of Christmas. We prepare to celebrate the first coming of Christ, His birth; and we prepare for His second coming. We also prepare in our own homes, our domes c Church, for the different seasons too. We make plans with family and friends related to special gatherings, dinners, gi ing, how we might decorate and more.

As God’s People we too must prepare for each new liturgical season of our faith. As a Parish Family we will gather as a faith-filled assembly which is part of the liturgical environment. It is important for us to prepare for how we are together for it affects how well we do what we do together; similarly to family gatherings.

In our family at home, our domes c Church, we give thought as to what we may gi another to honor them. We also should be giving thought during Advent as to what we may gi our parish in our weekly offerings, Christmas offering and this year through a special opportunity.

Through the “Strengthening Spirituality” program we can gi a unique special spiritual gi for the parish in memory of a loved one or to leave a legacy in your name or the name of your family. A variety of liturgical items are available for specified dona ons and can be pledged and paid over a three year period beginning in January 2022.

It’s me to prepare and if you have not already given it thought or made a decision prayerfully consider gi ing an item during this season of hope, peace, joy and love—Advent. The First Sunday of Advent is 28 November! "The sanctuary is the place where the altar stands, the Word of God is proclaimed, and the Priest, the Deacon, and the other ministers exercise their func ons. “ (GIRM 295). It is beau ful as the center of the SCS Chapel in our Sienna Center.

The Table of the Lord, the Altar — We shared in Part I of this series the importance of the main altar. It is the “Table of the Lord” where the Liturgy of the Eucharist takes place. (see 10 October Bulle n for more details)

The Table of the Word, the Ambo — The word “ambo” comes from a Greek word meaning “step” or “eleva on.” Since the 4th century Chris ans were accustomed to using a special pla orm during Mass to chant or read the Epistles and Gospel. Today in the SCS Chapel the Word of the Lord

is proclaimed from an ambo that is adorned with wood carvings of the four evangelists: Ma hew, Mark, Luke and John. The ambo with its presence helps us center our thoughts during the proclama on of the Word of the Lord and listen with our heart to their wri ngs inspired by the Holy Spirit on the

life of Jesus Christ. The ambo shows the importance of the Word to the eye in addi on to ear. The ambo and each of the four carvings can be dedicated items. Hear the Word of the Lord, reflect on its meaning.

This is Part II of series on Strengthening Spirituality by enhancing liturgical environment and our spiritual life.
