Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

August 2, 2021

- Jen Arnold, M.A. in Theology and Cateche cs “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But

I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…” (Ma hew 5:43-44).

Jesus made a very clear and bold statement about how we are to deal with some of our least favorite people. We are to love them, but what does that look like, prac cally speaking?

Before we look at how to love our enemies, we have to define love. The world tells us that love is an emo on and that it feels good. Love is something that can be wri en about on a gree ng card and it sounds great. We see people all around us fall in love and others who fall out of love, sadly resulting in the dissolution of marriages based on feelings. The Christian definition of love, however, is much different and not dependent on feelings at all.

There must be two elements present for Chris an love to exist. The first is sacrifice and the second is willing the good of the other. In other words, you want what is best for another person, even if it means doing some act of self-sacrifice so that he or she may have that good. The ultimate example of this was when Jesus offered Himself to be sacrificed on the cross in order to save each and every one of us from our sins. We are called to imitate that very love that Jesus offered. While we will not literally be asked to hang on a cross for the good of another, we will be asked to hang our own needs and wants on a figurative cross for the good of another. Love is not a feeling. Love is a choice and it is an ac on, especially when the feel-ings of love are absent.

It is rela vely easy to see how Chris an love plays out by those in our lives who are on our side, or have our backs. We see displays of sacrificial love in our families every day. Those involved in ministry or other types of service make many sacrifices for the good of the poor and downtrodden. Our priests have made many great sacrifices in their lives for the good of us who make up the Church which they serve. But how do we demonstrate sacrificial love for the good of our enemies or, less strongly, for those toward whom we don’t have warm and fuzzy feelings?

Offering a Mass Inten on The custom of reques ng a priest to offer the Mass for a specific inten on, even when one cannot be physically present at the Mass, is a longstanding tradition in the Church. This is because the Church considers the Mass as the greatest possible prayer of intercession, insofar as it is the perfect offering of Christ to the Father by making present the paschal mystery of his death and resurrec on. To request a Mass offering for the inten ons of a living person or for the repose of the soul of a deceased person, please feel free to contact the Parish Office. For more information and to make the request electronically (with optional payment by credit card) please visit corpuschristiphx.org/mass-inten on.

Corpus Chris Catholic Church www.corpuschris phx.org 4 (Con nued from cover page.)

First, let’s explain the good that we seek for those we dislike. We can want them to do well in life or to have healthy rela onships. These types of things are good to want for anyone. However, if we go deeper, the ul mate good we could ever want for anyone is the salva on of their soul. Presuma-bly, most of us would never want our most bi er enemy to suffer in hell for all eternity, that is, if we understand what hell really is. Therefore, the single best thing we could ever want for any other human being is to see them in heaven one day, because it would mean that you both are basking in the glory of the Triune God. What could be be er than that?! Also, there will no longer be any grievances in heaven, and you may find that the person you disliked most on earth could actually be one of your greatest friends in heaven. It’s hard to say what God has in store for us and our enemies at the end of the day, but we should open our hearts out of love to wait for the treasures He has in store.

Now that we have iden fied what good we want for our enemies, how do we offer sacrifice to help them obtain it? We are called to sacrifice our anger, frustra on, resentment, or hurt feelings in order to pray for that person’s soul. We are called to nail all of our nega ve feelings to our cross to help bring about that person’s salva on through prayer. Some mes praying for someone you dislike can be very difficult because it requires a great deal of discipline to push aside those negative feelings in order to genuinely ask God to bestow his mercy and

grace on them, but God sees your sacrifice and efforts and will reward them. He will provide opportuni es for that person to accept His grace in his or her life, and in doing what you are called to do, you will re-ceive more blessings than you could ever imagine.

If we go back to our original premise that love is a choice and an action, we can identify other additional ways we can make sacrifices for the good of our enemies. You can pray a rosary or novena for that person, which is a sacrifice of your

me. You can sacrifice your personal comfort by fas ng for that person, which makes your prayers for him or her more efficacious. When you a end Mass, you can offer the sacrifice at the altar for the good of that person in your heart, or be er yet, you can have Masses said, which would be the greatest act of loving your enemy that you could give. The op ons are endless when it comes to helping to bring about the ul mate good of your enemies.

Think of a person that would fall under the category of your enemies. Perhaps someone has hurt you in the past, or has an incorrect percep on of you and your inten ons. Maybe you don’t get along with a co-worker or someone in your minis-try. Or, like the scripture above says, maybe there is someone who persecutes or curses you for your beliefs or because they simply do not like you. Meditate on wan ng the ul mate good for that person, which is to be in heaven for all eternity and ask God to help bring that about while offering your own efforts of sacrifice to increase the grace.

Do you love working with children?

Children’s Faith Formation is looking for Catholic adults who feel called to share their love of God and their Faith with our children. Teachers and aides are needed for grades K-5. Due to C -19, class sizes will need to remain small. We

therefore need additional catechists in order to offer enough classes.

Please contact Kathy Egle at [email protected] if you are interested in volunteering.

New opportuni es to give of yourself with your me and talents! We are looking for new council members!

First, THANK YOU so much to all the current and previous Pastoral Council and Finance Council members. These two groups have played vital roles in making our parish what it is today! Your time, given in service to our parish, is so greatly appreciated!

We love all our council members and it is always sad when one of his or her terms comes due! Alas, things must change, and new perspec ves are needed to keep our parish growing! We have several member terms coming due, so we are looking for parishioners who are interested in serving on one of these councils!

The Pastoral Council meets with the pastor once a month to discuss, prayerfully discern, and provide advice on various topics regarding the parish. They also help to promote communica on, understanding, and resolu on among parish ministries, organiza ons, and parishioners.

The Finance Council meets with the pastor every other month to discuss and provide advice on all parish matters related to finance. A finance-related background (accounting, management, law, business, etc.) is helpful!

If you are a parishioner in full communion with the Catholic Church and are endowed with an overall knowledge of parish life and sensi vity to pastoral values, please prayerfully consider applying!

If prayer has led you to applying, please write a short le er or email (just one or two paragraphs is fine) to Fr. Rey (administrator@corpuschris phx.org) describing yourself, how you have been involved in the parish, and why you are interested in serving the parish, and our Lord, in this way.

Thank you!

Join in Praying the 54 Day Rosary Novena

The Novena begins August 15 (Feast of the Assump on of the Blessed Virgin Mary)

and concludes on October 7 (Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary).

The 54 Day Rosary Novena consists of praying the Rosary each day for 27 days in pe on; followed immediately by praying the rosary each day for 27 days in thanksgiving, whether or not the request has been granted.

For the novena, instead of praying the sets of Mysteries according to the day of the week, as is traditionally done, the Mysteries are prayed in order, in cycles. For example, if you pray the novena using the original three sets of Mysteries, you would pray the Joyful Mysteries on day 1, then the Sorrowful on day 2, the Glorious on day 3, and then start over with the Joyful on day 4, and so on. If you would like to include the Luminous Mysteries, you would pray them on the day a er the Joyful Mysteries.

An online search of “54 Day Rosary Novena” will provide a wealth of informa on on the background of the no-vena, miracles associated with it, and various prayers and inten ons you may wish to include in the novena.
