The Thirteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

The Scriptures presented today reflect the power that God bestows on His emissaries. Elisha predicts the birth of a son to a woman who has befriended him, while Jesus continues instructing the 12 who will be traveling in pairs in their roles and expectations demanded of them in the messaging of Jesus’ teaching. The scriptural excerpts bring together the power given to those who are commissioned to do divine tasks with all the risks that their message may entail. The Old Testament account draws attention on the prophet Elisha. He wishes to compensate a woman who has provided him with food and lodging each time he has visited her village. She prompts her kindness by her recognition of him as a man of God. In humble thankfulness Elisha asks his servant Gehaze to learn what his provider may need as compensation. Elisha proclaims that the childless couple shall have a child by his next visit and the inference is the child will be a son. Why a son? A son represents a parents’ future, especially his mother’s future and her major contribution to society. Elisha’ word comes to pass. The son is a guarantee that a widow will continue in support and comfort that the widowed mother will supply. Throughout the New Testament all four evangelists give instances where the needs of a widow are provided. Jesus provides a widow who is burying her only son by resurrecting him. This story occurs in a village called Niaam. Elisha’s concern for this childless woman comes from the culture of the time. There are many events in Holy Scripture that seems off-beat to current time. The reader or hearer of Scripture must consider the culture to understand what is happening. This alert explains why Elisha cares for this woman. In a later tale her husband dies and a son will provided what the father used to provide. However when the son dies, the mother calls Elisha who then comes to resurrect him so that mother will have someone to care for her. Two weeks ago the Gospel presented Jesus’ commissioning the twelve on a journey of evangelization. Last week Jesus began a discourse of instruction of “not to fear.” This week Matthew reports the conclusion of these instructions. This final lesson gives the details that each disciple must personally accept to be a true disciple. A disciple must sever all ties to his former life even ties that bind him to a family. He must accept any and all evil that may be laced on him (these are labeled “crosses” by Matthew.) The use of “cross” as a Christian symbol makes it difficult to grasp the harshness one may encounter as a Christian. A disciple’s renunciation of his former life goes beyond this. He may face crucifixion as Jesus has. During Roman times in Jerusalem crucifixion was a means of execution for rebels and slaves. In these expected behavior the disciple accepts Jesus as “the Son of Man” complies with these expected behaviors. The nature of discipleship also uses the legal principle governing a Jewish emissary. This principle explains verse 40 “whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. “A man’s agent is like himself”. It defines the religious basis of discipleship by deriving it ultimately from the Father Himself. The ending to this passage presents the concept of reward in heaven given to those who receive and treat the emissaries of Jesus in the manner Jesus established. L Even the smallest gift of a glass of cooing water or any other smaller service will have earned a reward because he has generously given to the Lord Himself (Matthew 25:40). Both passages relate the expected behaviors of God’s

emissaries and the rewards given to those who receive these

Christian behaviors. Elisha promises a son to a childless woman

for her gifts to him in his need. This example foretells the behaviors that Jesus espouses to His disciples on their journeys of

evangelization in this passage from Matthew.

PARISH UPDATE The Mass attendance count last weekend was 54 for the 5:00 pm Mass and 96 for the 9:00 am Mass. With our

reduced seating capacity (80-100), this will necessitate adding a second Sunday Mass starting in July in anticipation of

growing attendance. Its time will depend on the arrangements that can be made for the required cleaning between the

two Masses. The start date for this second Sunday Mass and its time will be announced. How good it is to see so many

people at Mass while there is still no obligation to attend! May your love for Our Lord, present in His Self-Offering at

Mass so that we can join in His oblation for the life of the world, bring you and those you hold dear many blessings.

DIOCESAN LENTEN APPEAL (DLA) 2020

It is truly amazing that you have once again surpassed not only our Diocesan Target ($29,241) but also our total goal of $39,241. One hundred seventy-four (174) donors have now given or pledged $43,807.00 to this year’s DLA. We will have then $14,566 from this Appeal that can be used for Parish needs. That’s startling considering the state of life during this pandemic, and wonderfully electrifying! Again, thank you so much for your continued generosity toward the Church. May our Lord and Blessed Mother bless you and keep you close to their hearts. DLA Reports will now monthly. THANK YOU ALSO FOR YOUR VERY GENEROUS ON-GOING WEEKLY SUPPORT of St. Flor ian Par ish

during the COVID-19 restrictions. May Our Lord continue to bless you and your families and our Parish Family as well!

Read Fr. John’s Homily at www.saintflorian.org under the “Parish Life” tab.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION resumed on June 16th and 17th. THANK YOU, Adorers, so very

much for your generous response. Our Lord promises intimate friendship with Himself to those who

spend time before Him in the Most Blessed Sacrament. In future bulletins, I will share some of Jesus’

words about this to a Benedictine priest. The following times had one adorer: 8:30 am, 9 am, 10 am ,

3 pm, 9 pm, 1 am, 2 am, 3 am, and 5 am. Also, coverage for several of the hours was provided by

persons who took more than one hour.

SUMMER FESTIVAL CANCELLED FOR THIS YEAR Due to the ongoing pandemic and the many concerns involving “Social Distancing”, it is necessary to cancel this year’s summer festival that was set for August 9. Parishioners are asked to pick up their raffle tickets in the back of church. Representatives

will be available to help you. You are encouraged to take the tickets of friends and neighbors and other family members who have yet to return to church, but please do not place them in their mailbox. Stubs may returned by placing them in the collection basket or dropped off at the rectory during summer hours. The office is open from Monday – Wednesday from 8:15 – 3:45 and on Thursdays from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. Please do not return them by mail. This too is not permitted by the us postal system.

Thank you for your support. We will be giving periodic updates on the tickets throughout the summer!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS… 2021 FESTIVAL IS SET FOR AUGUST 8!!!

Thank you to The Community Foundation of Fayette County, who have generously donated the extra face masks that we have present for those who need them at Mass.
