Connections by Joe Lesko

Pentecost Sunday

The setting for this first passage on the Feast of Pentecost is 50 days after Easter Sunday. Ten days have passed since Jesus has ascended to the Father and has commissioned the disciples with the responsibility of administering and expanding His Church. Before He departed He has told them “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wit for the gift my Father promised, which you heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit “ (Acts of the Apostles 1:4-5). After the Ascension the disciples return to Jerusalem and the safety of the Upper Room. Wanting to replace the betrayer Judas, the 11 select Matthias by lot to once again be the original 12. Their action further shows that the office of Bishop is to be a perpetual office. Luke’s narrative is filled with symbols of the Holy Spirit. Wind, breath, spirit are one Hebrew word “ruah”. Each meaning suggests a life force that enters the souls of the disciples. The tongues of fire become the foreign tongues. Fire can destroy or empower as is the case here when the visitors to Jerusalem can understand what the disciples are saying in their own language. The disciples venture from the closure of the Upper Room. The massive crowd is filled with Jews who have gathered in Jerusalem for the Pentecost from their dispersion among many nations. Here not only a change in the disciples’ courage but also a change has effected the crowd from confused to astonished to amazed at their hearing of the disciples ‘message to conversion, each in his own native language. The ending verse lists the areas from where the individuals within the crowd have come. The list of nations creates the impression of “university” for Jesus’ Church. And so the Church on this day is born. The disciples transform from the security of the locked room to bold and proud proclaimers of the marvels that God has accomplished through His Son Jesus Christ. Each of the disciples has been empowered by the promise of a new Advocate to replace the ascended Christ. The Gospel is a repeat of what had been read on the Second Sunday of Easter. The passage narrates Jesus’ first appearance to His Apostles who are filled with joy for Jesus is again among them. He has miraculously appeared in their midst in spite of a locked and barricaded room. To assure them of His crucifixion He reveals His wounds. Twice He announces the gift of “peace” to them. In Jesus’ vernacular “shalom” is an ordinary greeting which the Israelites consider a gift from Yahweh. Shalom does not translate well into English where peace is used but does not connote the rich meaning of “completeness, perfection, a condition in which nothing is lacking.” It is a blessing having many attributes given to one who has just entered as well as one who is leaving. Perhaps the Church should adopt shalom as English is language that borrows many foreign words into its vocabulary. Jesus passes the authority to bring healing and repentance to the members of His Church through the forgiveness of sins. He is leaving them with the same authority which the Father has given Him.

WAYS TO GIVE

During this time of closures throughout the church, please consider keeping up your weekly contributions to

St. Florian. There are 4 options available for regular giving.

ONLINE GIVING: Our parish offers Online Giving, a web-based electronic contribution application. This service is safe and secure. And it is convenient for you and for our parish staff. Sign up for Online Giving by visiting our parish website at www.saintflorian.org and selecting the “Donate” link in the top right hand corner.

US MAIL: Contributions can be sent through the mail service to: St. Florian Church

PO Box 187 United, PA 15689

STOP BY THE PARISH OFFICE: The parish office is open Monday—Thursday, 8:45 am to 3:45 pm. Feel free to drop by anytime with your offertory envelope. A locked mailbox is available outside of the Rectory Front Door.

HOLD UNTIL THE END OF THE MONTH OR THE LIFTING OF MASS RESTRICTIONS: It would be helpful to the church to have all donations received before the end of each month. If possible, please use one of the above options once a month before the end of the month or save all donations until the Mass restrictions are lifted if needed.

There is a play on the Hebrew word ruah. The Baltimore Catechism defines a sacrament as an outward sigh (He breathed on them) instituted by Christ (the one breathing) to give grace (receive the Holy Spirit) to create a sacrament. Jesus then passes the authority to forgive sins in His name and by extension to their successors. This mission to establish reconciliation is important enough to God the Father that He sends His only Son to establish this practice. Through reconciliation with God, the people can then be God’s sons and daughters. This process entitles one to eat the family meal (the Eucharist) that joins all as one family. Jesus continues His teaching before He ascends to the Father. Both passages center on Jesus’ continuing His teachings to

His disciples to whom He has chosen to become the builders of His Church. The Apostles are commissioned by Jesus to the

same mission that the Father had given Him.

ST. FLORIAN EXTENDED CAPITAL CAMPAIGN HAS OFFICIALLY ENDED! Our

OFFICIAL pledge total is $797,696.33 and the official amount collected as of April 30th is $784,457.33

which is $134,000 more than our original Campaign Goal! AGAIN, WHAT A TREMENDOUS

SUCCESS! We are truly grateful to God and to all who have contributed to or prayed for the success of

our Campaign, and in a special way to our Campaign Chairperson, Jim Schmidt, and co-leaders, Dave

Lazor and Terry Foriska. We are also deeply grateful to Bishop Malesic who granted the one-year

Campaign extension to help us pay off our loan as soon as possible. Please note that any new (not

previously pledged) Campaign donations that come in after April 30th will have to be applied to our DLA

in order for them to be assessment-free. AMEN!

PARISH UPDATE It is somehow fitting that the resumption of “public” Masses is going to take place after the glorious Easter Season and

Pentecost, which would have been subdued because of restrictions. Fittingly too, however, the first two Sundays with

open Masses will be solemnities – The Most Holy Trinity (June 7th) and The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (June

14th) – which will help to lift up our hearts in jubilation and gratitude. I hope everyone who is healthy will attend, even

though there is no obligation. It would be wonderful if we exceeded our limited capacity for the two weekend Masses

that we intend to start with – 5:00 pm Saturday and 9:00 am Sunday. If we do, we will quickly add a third Mass and go

from there. Please observe the precautions that will be in effect. Thank you. I look am looking forward to next weekend

and getting to see many of you.

DIOCESAN LENTEN APPEAL (DLA) 2020

THANK YOU SO MUCH! We have surpassed our Diocesan Target of $29,241 and are now getting close to reaching

our Total Goal of $39,241. One hundred fifty-eight (158) donors have now given or pledged $37,195 to this year’s DLA.

This is 94.7% toward our Total Goal. One hundred percent of every dollar now contributed to this Appeal comes back to

St. Florian’s. Again, thank you so much for your continued generosity toward the Church.

THANK YOU ALSO FOR YOUR VERY GENEROUS ON-GOING WEEKLY SUPPORT of St. Flor ian Parish

during the COVID-19 restrictions. May Our Lord continue to bless and your families and our Parish Family as well!
