EDITORIAL BY THE SECRETARY GENERALHas technological development left scientists behind?

Reading a few pages of the French author Michel Serres, I thought about the role of

modern scientists; about the impact of science on us and the difficulty for humans to

adapt to rapidly changing developments. Serres writes about the feedback loop, making

us dependent on things that really depend on us. This has been working since the time

when we first produced artefacts, from the dawn of man. We produce artefacts and, in

return, they influence us. The man who discovered and managed fire is no longer the same

man because the heat has transformed the food, the habitat, the skin, the behaviour and

the fragility. It is no longer the same man who uses the mobile phone because it remodels

space, accelerates time, facilitates access, brings the correspondents closer together.

Externalized by the body, the artefacts return and modify us as human beings. Technical

invention has, therefore, effects on human innovation. This process has been going on

for millennia and we continually become our children; our children who we often do

not and cannot understand. The “everyday” in its routine structure is ending and reality

requires a continuous adaptation process, caused by technology and globalization. In

scientific development we must continuously adapt without really understanding what

is happening. It used to take many years to understand and change our ways but

nowadays we must do it in months. Scientific research needs a relatively long time span

to fix objectives, carry out planning, collect information, analyse data and contemplate

conclusions. Scientific research does not have time to be updated. And, coming back to

Serres, is there time for the scientists “created” by the latest technological development to

understand the newest ways to plan research? And which level of inefficiency is caused

by this?

Ghent welcomes Europe’s largest scientific conference on animal production

From 26th to 30th August 2019 ILVO organizes the annual EAAP Congress on animal production in the International Congress Center (ICC) in Ghent. During this 70th edition, more than 1,300 scientists, experts and stakeholders from the business community and government will focus on the theme “Animal farming for a healthy world. The meeting is the hot spot for animal production in Europe for 5 days. Exchange of scientific knowledge and international contacts with research, policy and industry are crucial in a unique historical context of Ghent.

Animal farming for a healthy world

“Animal production for a healthy world” is the main theme of this edition. In 73 sessions with a total of more than 700 lectures and 540 posters on topics such as genetics, nutrition, management, animal welfare, agro-ecology, climate change, ecological footprint and product quality, the congress will address the most important of current societal concerns on animal production. The extensive scientific program covers the various sectors of the animal sector: cattle, pig and poultry farming, but also horses, insects, sheep and goats. More info about the program can be found on the EAAP website.

More than science…

In addition to scientific lectures and poster sessions, the congress will also include informal networking opportunities and social activities to establish contacts between people active in research institutions, governments and the business community. Of course, the culinary and historical assets of Ghent and Belgium play an important role in this. The specificity of the Belgian agricultural sector is also highlighted during 4 technical excursions on the last congress day. Each of these emphasizes some of the strong and/or innovative aspects of our Belgian agricultural sector: highly muscled meat breeds, aquaculture, insects, horse breeding, goat farming, family farms, efficient feed production and research.

standardization of the different aspects of insect rearing and production is needed for the sector to compare the obtained results, to evolve and scale up production. Rearing conditions, diet standardization, results repeatability, performance and quality, large scale prediction are some of the major points to which the researcher and stakeholders should focus on for the next future. All these topics, if harmonized between each other and through the rearing systems, will assure the link between the interpretation of nutritional quality and characteristics of the insect products obtained. This will lead to the basis of the nutritional approach in performing diets formulation such as the optimal animal performance reached through the use of well-defined and constant nutritional sources. The challenge session on Standardization of research methods and parameters is a focal point were almost all the major variables in the insect production systems and product interpretation and evaluation will be considered such as the specific rearing conditions for the different insect species, the standardization of the administered diet, the need for the repeatability of the obtained results through the different research approaches, the standardization of performance and quality indexes and finally, the large scale prediction to evolve the sector.

Session 31: “How to address tradeoffs and synergies in livestock farming systems?” – The session will address tradeoffs and synergies between social,

The main objective of EAAP is the development and dissemination of knowledge, as well as international cooperation between the various stakeholders in animal production. With the program of the 70th EAAP Congress, this is clearly evident. In this way, the animal production sector can continue to innovate and new contacts can form the basis of future cross-border cooperation.

In short, this is a unique opportunity to gain knowledge, expand your network and promote the Belgian agricultural sector with us.

70th EAAP Annual Meeting sessions

We are glad to announce some of the most interesting sessions to be held during the 70th Annual Meeting in Ghent from 26th to 30th August 2019:

Session 28: “Standardisation of research methods and parameters” - Insects as feed for livestock is not anymore an emerging chance, but is a challenge for the future. Although the interest of stakeholders and civil society is still increasing in considering insects as a valuable source for nutrition, a real step forward will be not achieved since standards practices and indexes will be not settled up. The

Animal Nutrition sessions:

• “Dietary functional components: effects on animal performance, health and environment” - Dietary functional components such as carotenois, fatty acids, phenolics compounds, bioactive peptides etc. can have a positive impact on animals’ performance and health and can reduce also the greenhouse gas emissions.

• “Algae as animal feed” - Algae have been investigated intensively in the past years for their application as a sustainable protein source in livestock feed. Specific nutrients and bioactive ingredients in algae also seem promising to improve animal health and performance while reducing the environmental footprint for both monogastric and ruminant species. This session will explore recent developments on the various aspects of microalgae as well as macroalgae (seaweed) in animal nutrition.

• “Former food in animal nutrition: advantages and challenges” - Based on current data, former food products and by-products have an excellent potential use as alternative feed ingredients for livestock production, even though their full nutritional, functional, safety and sustainability evaluation cannot be considered as complete. Accordingly, the session will try to cover these topics as well as the future challenges.

economic and environmental indicators at the animal, farm and regional scale. This will include visualisation as well as socio-economic and technical approaches to tradeoff analysis. Invited speakers: Tommy Dalgaard from Agro (Denmark).

Session 36: “Beef farming and products towards the future” - This session will deal with how any modification in livestock practices will affect the characteristics of beef. These characteristics may concern either intrinsic qualities (tenderness, flavor, color, fatty acid composition, micro-nutrient content, etc) or extrinsic qualities (animal welfare, carbon footprint, etc). Any relationship between beef farming and consumer perception of beef quality will be also considered.

Session 41: “Resilient livestock forming systems in the context of climate and market uncertainties” – The session will address robustness, adaptation and transformability of livestock farming systems as well as their vulnerability. There will be a mixture of technical and economical approaches to resilience in conventional as well as pastoral areas and interactions between rural and urban societies. Invited speakers: Miranda Meuwissen from Wageningen (The Netherlands) and Guillaume Martin from INRA (France).

McDonald’s influence on the supply chain

The news that a third of McDonald’s eggs in its US supply chain are now sourced from cage-free systems just three years after it announced it would be totally cage-free in three years shows its impact on the supply chain. The fast food giant, which was established in 1940, buys about two billion eggs a year – almost 2% of the total in the USA. Read the full article on PoultryWorld.
