the canterbury scratch orchestra is a student collective interested in an open approach to improvising music. previous performances have involved responding to drawings, working with film-makers and poets and collaborating with musicians as diverse as singer-song writers, indian classical musicians and laptop artists. the ensemble’s work focuses on people and play and at its heart lies John steven’s belief that music making involves ‘practising an alternate society’.

27 April – 12 May 2013, 10am - 6pm

Imagine walking through a world-class symphony orchestra as it plays Holst’s The Planets. A free digital installation, Universe of Sound, coming to Canterbury lets you do just that.

Visit each section of the Orchestra – violins and violas, flutes, trumpets, and so on – up close, projected

on to HD screens. You see what they see, and hear what they hear.

Simply watching – great. But how about actually conducting the orchestra? With conducting ‘pods’ using cutting-edge technology (as used on the Xbox), you can. You can also play on real instruments, under the guidance of the

Philharmonia’s players, listen to commentaries from the musicians and the conductor; and mix your own arrangement of a new, specially written piece.

If you’ve never seen an orchestra in action, it’s a perfect introduction. If you’re more familiar, it’s a fascinatingly different way of experiencing it.

Sat 4 May and Sat 11 May, free guided tours with a music leader (family tours available). Tickets are free, but require prior booking (limited availability). For more information and to book, please call 0800 652 6717

this multimedia performance installation piece for dancer and technician, fuses projected light structures and contemporary dance movement. it explores the relationship between performer and observer and attempts to create a meaningful aesthetic dialogue. through the use of touch screen surfaces, 3D projected light structures are drawn in real-time within the haze filled performance space. the observer can draw as a reaction to the movement of the dancer and in turn the dancer moves within the constantly shifting scenic environment. in every sense a collaborative work of performance emerges from the evolving conversation and tangible connection established between observer and performer.

Graphic control interface and isadora programming by Andy Hurst. choreography by katie Burse, ruth Blakey and charley Byrne.

the sea has, to a large extent, ensured the uk’s survival over the centuries; and it is via the sea that the country’s global dominance was established in the 18th and 19th centuries. this dominance permitted the sea to be exploited for trade, allowing for growth in wealth and influence, which saw the creation of the British Empire – a huge global military and trading power with a significant proportion of the world under British rule. What is the importance and utility of maritime power to the uk today?
