I really want a pen pal who is on a the-ater on ice team. I’ve been part of theBourne to Skate Theatre on Ice teamfor three years now, and I love it! Also, ever since I got my skates sharpened, Iseem to not be able to do a camel spin.I keep going up on my toe pick, and Ican’t stop! Any advice?Elizabeth Fallon, 12, FS 5Bourne Skating ClubBourne, Mass.

Maybe you got too used to doing thecamel spin on dull blades. Be sure youare pulling back on the rocker as youarch even more and stretch the position. You may also want to have your coachcheck the blade to be sure you haven’taccidentally nicked an edge.

I am working on Axels, camel-sitcombination spin, Lutz jump andsplit jump. I am looking for a pen palat about my age and level, whoshares my love for the sport. I wantto be able to give tips as well asreceive them. In addition to figureskating, I also ski race, act and run. Ilive about 40 miles away from theclosest ice rink!Natalie Sword, 13Diamond Ice ChaletGirdwood, Alaska

I’m looking for a pen pal who isaround my age and my level. I havebeen skating for about a year and ahalf. I am working on my Axel(and having trouble kicking forward),double Salchow, double loop jump, and I need help keeping my balanceon my footwork and especially onmy twizzles. I would like a pen palwho can give me tips and talk to meabout what we are learning. I wouldlike a pen pal who loves skating asmuch as I do.Lauren Diuco, 11, FS 4/5Aliso Viejo Ice PalaceMission Viejo, Calif.

I have been skating for about twoyears. I would like a pen pal becauseit would give me somebody to talk towho could understand and maybehelp me with the problems I havewith the spins and jumps. I am alsohaving trouble getting enough rota-tions on my sit spin and getting thefull rotation onmy flip. When I enterinto the spin, I can get about two

rotations, then I begin to lose my bal-ance and can no longer hold thespin. When I perform the flip, I oftenhave to place my left foot down, thenmy right, to get part of the revolu-tion. I am also slightly afraid to jumpthe flip because of an accident that Ihad while doing the jump. What Ireally need help on is keeping mybalance in the entrance to the spinand landing the flip.Jewel Jordan, 14, FS 4Tucker Road Ice RinkFort Washington, Md.

It does sound like fear — not ability —is keeping you from a flip jump. How’s

your loop jump? It may help to startthinking of the flip as just a quick tapinto a loop jump. Once you take off, theair positions and landings are identical. On the sit spin, be sure to step into thecenter of your circle and bring your freearm and leg around strong, but together.Don’t worry about getting all the waydown yet. It’s better to have speed andcontrol first.

I am working on my one-foot spin. Itis tricky. I have trouble holdingmyself up on one foot. It almostmakes me fall. I have trouble endingmy program with my music. I wouldlike to also get my shoot-the-duckdown lower, but that makes me fall.My favorite skating move is my backspiral. I have two cousins, Kailey andHannah, who live on the same streetas me and we go skating together. Igo over to their house to stretchbefore skating. We all have fun onour synchro teams. I would like tohave a pen pal between 8 and 10 whois working on Freestyle 1 to 3.Jacqueline Hayden, 7, FS 1Winterland Skating SchoolRockland, Mass.

I’m in Freestyle 2 and I can’t passbecause of the half Lutz. Do you haveany tips?Maggie Carey, 9, FS 2Oakton Ice ArenaPark Ridge, Ill.

Are you changing to the inside edge atthe last second when taking off? That’sa common mistake. Be sure you aretapping behind and not to the side, anddon’t let your shoulders rotate beforejumping.

where you want it for the landing of theAxel anyway!

I have been skating for five yearsnow. I am cleaning up my double Sal-chow and starting my double toe. Mycamel spin keeps tipping off my toepick, and it’s hard to get the camelconsistent. Any tips?Terry Teresa Nguyen, 10, FS 5/6Anaheim ICEGarden Grove, Calif.

Because of the forward position, hitting thetoe pick on a camel spin is a common prob-lem. Work on arching the back more andpulling back on your blade to keep as muchweight as possible off the front. It’s astretch that is good to practice at the boardswith one leg up on the wall. Terry, you alsorequested a pen pal, however, our pen palprogram is through e-mail only, and youdid not send us your e-mail address. If youwill send it to [email protected], we willforward your information to the pen palyou requested.

I am working on my Axel, and havelanded it many times on the har-ness and on the ice. I love skatingand have skated for two years now.I have 89 medals, 79 of them first-place ones. I skate five days a weekand take group lessons and privatelessons. I would like a pen pal ofany level who loves to skate asmuch as I do.Nykki Olejniczak, 7, FS 5Lloyd Center Ice RinkPortland, Ore.

I have been skating since I was 6. Thisyear I made the IcePlex Ice Stars syn-chronized teen team. I am on a breakfrom private lessons, and I am work-ing on my camel-sit, but I only haveenough speed for my first rotation.Do you have any tips? I would likeanother pen pal, around my age andmaybe in Freestyle 6 or 7.Sammi Kammer, 12, FS 5Pleasant Prairie IcePlexPleasant Prairie, Wis.

Try to get a strong camel spin by itselfbefore combining it with a sit spin. The

camel spin entrance is all about timing— step in on a bent knee, then pullaround the lead arm at the same timeyou straighten the knee. Don’t rusheither part, and keep your muscles tight.

I’ve been in Freestyle 5 for a whilenow and the only thing I haven’tpassed is my Axel. I can’t seem to getthe landing right when I’m not onthe harness. I tend to slip backwardand land on my butt or back, and Idon’t know what to do to perfect it. Iwould also like to have a pen palwho’s around my age and in Freestyle4 or 5.Tori Irvine, 12, FS 5Fairfax Ice ArenaSpringfield, Va.

If you are falling backward, it soundslike your free leg isn’t getting checked outsoon enough. Try working on an Axel-toe loop combination jump. By antici-pating the toe loop, your free leg willhave to reach back to tap, which is

The record heat wave that hitDenver in late July might havebeen a clue that something

unusual was in the air. Just as the typ-ically mild climate soared into thetriple digits, ISI Worlds made its Col-orado debut, rockin’ the Rockies witha recreational ice skating competitionunlike anything the region had everexperienced.

“Our people were blown away,”said Gerry Lane, event chairman andskating director for host facilitiesSouth Suburban Family Sports Cen-ter and South Suburban Ice Arena inCentennial. “Many were first-time ISIcompetitors, and the atmosphere atthis event was wonderful. We havehad State Games and other big eventsin this area, but this was competingon a whole new level for our skaters. They are already talking about goingto future big ISI events, like Worldsin San Jose next year.”

Lane said the response was sopositive that his facilities are alreadyconsidering hosting future events.“Despite the incredible amount ofwork that goes into hosting such abig event, our staff hasn’t given metoo many strange looks when I talkabout the next one,” he added.

“The week went very smoothly,”noted Randy Winship, ISI’s nationalskating program and events coordina-tor. “We received many commentsabout the great hospi-tality and wonderfulrink facilities, thanksto Gerry, along withfacility managersTim Johnson andFrank Xavier, andtheir staff and vol-unteers. Their earlyplanning, prepara-tion and organiza-tion made it allpossible.”

An ice skat-ing event coor-dinator’s worstnightmarebecame a real-ity on the firstday of competition whenone of the competition rinks lost itsice. But professional competence, quick action and level heads prevailed, the near-disaster was averted and thefirst event started only one minute late.“That actually made anything thatcame up during the rest of the weekmuch easier to deal with!” Lane said.

Indeed, the rest of the week wasas refreshing as a mountain breeze(minus a record heat wave). Nearly90 facilities from 23 states and threeforeign countries brought more than

900 competitors who skated acollective total

of 2,619 performances. Ages rangedfrom an adorable 3 to a stunninglygraceful 83. Texas brought the mostout-of-state competitors, while Singa-pore and Alaska teams traveled thegreatest distance.

Between competition events, visitorstook full advantage of the fun attractionsat Family Sports Center. It was the firsttime most had encountered a climbingwall, bumper cars, laser tag and otheramusement park attractions under thesame roof as an ice rink.

Many families took the opportuni-ty to explore the scenic surroundings, with day trips to Rocky MountainNational Park, Pikes Peak, Garden ofthe Gods and Elitch Gardens themepark in Denver. Shopping excursions tothe area’s wonderful malls were anoth-er popular activity.

Worlds week culminated with theISIA Education Foundation’s sold-outBenefit on Ice show (see page 23) starringthe delightful Mirai Nagasu.

RECREATIONAL ICE SKATING, FALL 200810

It was amazing to watch the advanced skaters, aswe are from a fairly new rink and don’t have manyolder skaters to look up to. One of the best parts ofour week was when our team, new to Worlds, made it to fourth place and was only one-tenth ofa point away from third! We finished at sixth, andare immensely proud of ourselves. Thanks, Denver, for putting on such a great week!

Cecilia Lang • Rapid City, S.D.

We were so excited to performour new Free Dance 3 thatincludes all of the new requiredmaneuvers. At 73 years old, each competition becomes aspecial event, a challenge con-quered and a reason to rejoice. We also always enjoy catchingup with old friends met at previ-ous venues, and meeting somany more new people. Thanks for a wonderfullife experience.

Bev and Jack Rienks • Englewood, Fla.

ISI Worlds was an experience we willnever forget. We loved meeting and skat-ing with people from all across Americaand from around the world! Itwas fun trading pins withother skaters from far away, and we will always rememberthem when we look at thosepins on our Zucas! My girlsloved “collecting” thelicense plates we saw in theparking lots of SouthSuburban Ice Arena andFamily Sports Center, and

we had seen 28 states when theweek ended! We also loved all the unusual events, and we had fun participating

in the Surprise events. The opening ceremony and the party on Wednesday night weregreat, too. Thanks for a wonderful event!

Rebecca Moore (Janie’s and Mary’s Mom) • Centennial, Colo.

The event was extremely organized, wellplanned and had very knowledgeable and helpful staff. As a par-ent, the best part of competing in an ISI events is what ISI standsfor with its three golden rules of competition: sportsmanship, teamwork and fairness. This is the environment all parents canhope their child is a part of.

Amy Hopkins (Skylar’s Mom) • Dunedin, Fla.

I had an awesome time in Denver. My brother, Anthony, and I had a blast at the party in the park. We loved therides. I met skaters from all over the United States andsome foreign countries. I was glad to see some special

skaters from the FSA in Elk Grove Village — they did awesome! I am planning ongoing to San Jose in 2009 to meet new friends and to have fun competing.

Andrea Caruso • North Riverside, Ill.

I had so much fun making friends and competing againstso many wonderful skaters from around the world. Myfavorite memories are slumber parties with my teammatesand coach, a fun dinner at Casa Bonita watching cliffdivers, riding rides at the ice rink, the competitors’ party, watching amazing skaters in many different kinds ofevents and trading pins. On my way home, I told my momand dad, “I LOVE being an ice skater!”

Peyton Wiewel • Parkville, Mo.

This is our second Worlds competition, and our first time doinga Family Spotlight. We competed on Aug.1, which was Emma’s9th birthday. We received a fourth-place medal and had somuch fun! Emma thought it was a great way to celebrate herspecial day. We are looking forward to next year’s competitionin San Jose.

Kathy Plakovic (Emma’s Mom) • Austin, Texas

My daughter, Loray, 5, was so excitedto be able to skate on the ice all byherself and we were absolutely thrilledwith all of her performances. She toldme that it didn’t matter if she placedor not because she was having somuch fun. Thanks to the ISI organi-zation for making her first competi-tion a fantastic experience!

Karen Harris • Aurora, Colo.

My daughter and I competed at Worlds and wehad a wonderful time. The people at the SouthSuburban Ice Arena and Family Sports Centerwere great, and we made a lot of friends. Themost memorable for us were the Special Skaters— watching them skate brought tears of joy to myeyes that they can do what they love, which isskating. I am so glad that there is ISI, not just forus but for every individual, despite their disabili-ties. God bless ISI.

What a great event and loca-tion Denver was! We loved the pintrading and look forward to makingsome pen pals. It was neat to see allthe doors at the hotel plastered withsigns — everyone was so welcomingand excited! Denver and the sur-rounding communities were packedwith great views and fun things to do.We look forward to training hard andskating at Worlds in the future!Sara Preston Davidson and (Mom)Kathy Davidson • Countryside, Fla.

Thank you from the bottom of myheart for making my daughter’s sum-mer one we will never forget —building confidence, exceptionalskating, a few disappointments, great sportsmanship and getting tomeet and watch Mirai Nagasuskate. All I can say is thank youfor giving my daughter a week ofmemories to carry her through alifetime.Jeanette Ordish • El Paso, Texas

The thing I enjoyed most in addition toperforming my two programs was theteam aspect of the competition. My fellowteammates and I rallied around each

other, and we were so excited to earn points for ourrink, Big Bear! It’s great to be a part of ISI Worlds.

Jamie Bergos • Aurora, Colo

ISI Recreational World Team Championships wasa wonderful experience. My coach helps keepice skating fun for her students. I met lots of newfriends and shared Webkinz stories, e-mailaddresses and a few phone numbers. I also metsome teenage girls from Austin, Texas who braid-ed my hair for my competition. But what I lovedthe most was skating my favorite program of alltimes, Romeo and Juliet. We only had eightskaters, [but] I think the audience knew thatArkansas was there — we should have won theloudest-group contest, for sure!

Kayla Alspach • Van Vuren, Ark.Our family had a greattime. Among otherevents, our childrenparticipated in theFamily Spotlight. Ihad looked forwardto meeting otherlarge skating families tosee what else we might have in commonbesides skating. I wasn’t disappointed. The otherfamilies in our category were a delight to meet, and the entire atmosphere on Friday at theFamily Spotlight events was heartwarming. Itemphasized what skating is all about for our fam-ily: fun, friendship and togetherness.

Cindy Arsenault • Highlands Ranch, Colo.

For me, the best part was having a caring ISI coach,Crystal, step in to put me on the ice when my owncoach had a conflict with another skater and judging oblig-ations. Crystal helped warm me up, was there when I finished my technicalprogram and stayed with my mom and me until the placements wereannounced. I will never forget her kindness, which helped make my firstWorlds a wonderful experience. Thank you, ISI!

Shelbi Todd • El Paso, Texas

We had a fabuloustime. We only hadeight skaters, andone of the mostmemorable eventswas the parade ofparticipants whenthey called out“Fairfax Ice Arena.”We were so proud

to be there, even though we did not have abanner for our group. Several other groups sawus and invited us to join them in the march.Everyone was so friendly. Thank you for a greattime at Worlds that we will never forget!

Memories

We had a blast meeting a lot of people from allover the world and connecting with old friends.Back at the Artistic Challenge in Connecticut,

Caitlin met Cassandra Colefrom Nashoba Valley. Theyimmediately bonded due tothe fact that both were theonly ones there from theirrinks and neither had acoach with them. AtWorlds they met up againto cheer each other on.Casey came again as theonly one representingNashoba Valley, andTBSA Coach Bill Coyles

immediately took her under his wingand the skaters made her an honorary memberof TBSA Countryside. That type of sportsmanshipis what ISI is all about.Brian, Laura and Caitlin Rice • Clearwater, Fla.

Worlds 2008 in Denver was a big week for the ISIAEducation Foundation. The festivities started onWednesday evening with the opening cere-

monies and competitors’ party, where the ISI celebritydunk tank was a huge hit — and a successful fundraiser.

Event Chairman Gerry Lane and ISI President JimHartnett braved the “treacherous” waters not once, nottwice, but a combined total of seven times, raising $100per dunk for the Foundation’s scholarship fund.

Thursday eveningthe Foundation hosted a mini-golf

tournament at the South Suburban Family SportsCenter. Hometown girl and Worlds adult skater Liz Avery

won the grand prize of a pair ofKlingbeil custom skating boots, generously donated by DonaldKlingbeil. (The best score wasactually earned by anotheradult competitor, BarbaraMozug, who graciouslypassed on the skates, as shehad just gotten a new pair.Barbara, you are a truechampion!) Rob LaurenceHawk of Melvindale,Mich. took home theMacGregor putter.

The highlight of theweek for skaters andspectators alike was theBenefit on Ice show onFriday evening atSouth Suburban IceArena. The talentedcast of 2008 ISIWorlds championswas joined by thetwo lucky “Skate with aStar” raffle winners, Carly AndrewsfromNorthbrook Sports Arena and Angelina Giulianofrom Franklin Park Ice Arena.

Both of the 2008 ISIA Education Foundation scholar-ship recipients were in attendance and honored by Foun-dation President Donald Bartelson and ISI Past PresidentBoyd Wietecter. Emily Miller skated a beautiful hoopRhythmic program, and Jessica Stachulak performed anambitious Artistic program (see page 26 for profiles).

The show was filled with the ISI spirit, from BrittanyBowlen’s amazing four-hula-hoop Spotlight program to

Yvonne and SherryDowlen’s touching“Mother/DaughterSpecial.” Yvonnewas the oldestWorlds competi-tor this year, at83 — but sheboth looks andskates like awoman a frac-tion of her age.It must be truethat the icekeeps skatersyoung. Theoldest malecompetitor,Ken Miller,

is 80 and also couldpass for a man decades younger.

Just when we thought the show couldn’t getany better, it was time for 2008 U.S. Senior Ladies Champi-on Mirai Nagasu to perform. The 15-year-old was pure graceful energy asshe effortlessly executed a triple loop, triple toe loop and double Axel, but it

was the flexibility of her spin positions that took ourbreath away. I’m not sure who had more fun at the meet-and-greet session after the show, the crowd or Mirai. Shestayed late into the evening, until every last audience mem-ber had gone home with her autograph.

A heartfelt thank-you goes out to all of you who havecontributed in any way to the Foundation this season; itis your generosity that makes dreams come true. The five-year capital fund drive is now in full swing. she says. Skating has taught her “to remain kind, caring, honest and compassionate when interacting with peo-ple, and always remain willing to help other skaters andparents,” Jessica adds.

In addition to skating and graduating from highschool with a 4.29 GPA based on a 4.0 point system, Jes-sica enjoys volunteering in her community. Who can do Jump & Spin events:Jump & Spin events are open to allskaters in Pre-Alpha level and higher. It’s one of the few ISI competitionevents in which skaters from differentskating levels can compete together.

Jump & Spin event description: Thisevent is usually done on half ice. Twoskaters enter the ice together and stop.Skater No. 1 begins and performs thesame chosen jump two times, andstops. Skater No. 2 then performs thesame chosen spin two times, and

stops. Both skaters then exit the ice together. Only the bestperformance by each skater will be scored against the perfor-mance of other teams in the same event group.

Like the Solo Compulsories event, there can be noother required test level or uncaptured maneuvers per-formed in the Jump & Spin event.

The best thing: The best thing about a Jump & Spin eventis that there is no program routine and nothing to pre-

pare. You will already be practicing your jumps and spinsfor your other program routines, so why not grab yourfriend and win another medal?

There’s no performance pressure of a program, and youcan be on the ice with your friend, so it’s also a great wayto compete in your first ISI competition.

There is no score for costumes; some partners getmatching T-shirts, hats or skating dresses and others justwear whatever they choose. It’s simple and easy, so ask yourcoach about this fun event.

Jump & Spin event levels: Two-person teams are dividedinto the following four event levels.

Low = Pre-Alpha-Delta skaters onlyMedium = Skaters from Freestyle 1-3 and belowIntermediate = Skaters from Freestyle 4-5 and belowHigh = Skaters from Freestyle 6-10 and below

If partners are of different levels, they will compete in thelevel of the higher partner.

Maneuver selections:Jump Choice Spin Choice

Low 2-foot hop or 2-foot spinbunny hop

Medium Half flip or toe 2-foot orloop jump 1-foot spin

Intermediate Half loop or Sit spin orAxel jump camel spin

High Double Salchow Flying sit oror double loop flying camel spin

In this event, skaters are not judged by the difficulty of themaneuver chosen, but rather the technical accuracy of theperformance.

Competition event groups: Skater teams are groupedtogether within the event levels (listed above) but not bythe specific Freestyle test level. Groups are also usuallydivided — based on the entries received — either by theaverage age of the two skaters on a team or by the age of theoldest skater. The competition director may also combinegenders for this event.

Judging criteria: All three judges only judge the techni-cal accuracy of the best performance for the maneuversperformed.

Featured event: This is a relatively new ISI event and it hasbeen gaining popularity across the country. It’s also a spe-cial “featured event” in 2008 for all of our national compe-tition events, so it could soon be offered at your local anddistrict competitions, too.
