Thoughts About Mission Sunday — May 4

Last Sunday night we studied a lesson we called “The Nuts and Bolts of Mission Work.” We looked at the circumstances of the very first “mission trip” that we commonly call “the first missionary journey of Paul.” We noted a number of things, but perhaps none more important than the first thing we studied: THERE MUST BE A SENDING CHURCH. The church that was in Antioch of Syria is the great example in the New Testament of a “sending church” (Acts 13:1).

It’s true that mission work doesn’t get done without a strong church that believes in missions. In the church at Antioch there was a number of prophets and teachers who were apparently willing to go. But it took a church who believed and supported missions to send them.

One thing the text doesn’t mention is the financial support it took for Paul and Barnabas to go on this incredible journey that scholars say lasted three years and covered around 1400 miles. Today, it goes without saying that if mission work will be accomplished it will take a great amount of financial resources.

The Roebuck Parkway congregation has a great history of supporting missions around the world. Each year we literally spend thousands of dollars to spread the Gospel through-out the world. However, this is all made possible by generous, sacrificial giving on one Sunday per year.

Next Sunday, May 4, we will have the opportunity to support the continued preaching of the Gospel around the world. Next Sunday, as in years past, the entire offering will go solely towards missions. Our goal is $104,000.

Obviously, for us to meet this goal we must go beyond our normal, weekly, purpose giving and give even more. Will you pray and prepare to help us rise to the challenge this year??? It is impossible to put a monetary figure on how much it takes to win a soul to Jesus, but we know that soul is worth more than everything in the world (Matt. 16:26).

The Providence of God The providence of God has been described as “the deepest and longest and kindest shadow which falls over the earth.” In our last article we began looking at Paul’s statement in Romans 8:28 at how the providence of God is expressed in four ways or laws. The first of these was the “law of operation – All things work. As we continue in this we want to notice the second law, the law of cooperation – “All things work to-gether.” The key to success in just about anything is coopera-tion. In his first letter to the church at Corinth Paul emphasized the need for cooperation in the church. This was illustrated in the physical body. “For in fact the body is not one member but many. 15 If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body," is it therefore not of the body? 16 And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body," is it therefore not of the body? 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling? 18 But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased” (I Cor. 12:14-18). The body is an example of how the many different members (parts) of the body need to work together. Take the foot as an example. It has 26 bones, 19 muscles, and 107 ligaments. Walking up stairs requires the cooperation of 300 different muscles. In the course of your life, you will walk about 100,000 miles. If you walk or jog for exercise then the number will be higher. But if those muscles, bones and ligaments did not work together you would not be able to walk. Spiritually speaking we need to cooperate with God! This same apostle who spoke of the cooperation in the physi-cal body emphasized the same cooperation in our spiritual life. In his second letter to the Corinthian church he said, “We then, as workers together with Him also plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain” (II Cor. 6:1). In our Christian lives we must work together with God to accomplish His will not only in our lives but in the lives of others also. We know that God wants all men to be saved (I Tim. 2:4) and certainly God is capable of saving all men. When Jesus spoke of the difficulty for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God, the disciples asked, “Who then can be saved?” Jesus replied, “With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible” (Mt. 19:25, 26). So God wants all men to be saved and He is able to save all men but His plan requires our cooperation! The sinner must listen to God and then obey what He says that they might be saved. The Christian must cooperate with God who has commanded us to go, to teach, to baptize and to teach (Mt. 28:18-20). In Romans 10:14, 15a Paul said, “How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent?” We must also cooperate with one another. When the Jews were upset at the thought of going in to take a land oc-cupied by giants, “Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, ‘Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it’” (Num. 13:30).
