SUMMARY OF THE OPPORTUNTY This is an exciting opportunity to serve as the Director of Partner Engagement for Colorado Springs-based World Challenge. Fulfilling the role of the organization’s first fully devoted Development professional, the successful candidate will have a deeply relational demeanor and pastor’s heart while working intentionally to engage and develop the ministry’s broad partner base in support of the life changing work of both World Challenge and its global missions arm, World Poverty solutions. Mission Statement: World Challenge is a nondenominational Christian organization committed to communicating the truths of Scripture and the person of Jesus Christ in an accurate, clear, and practical manner leading people to an understanding of God’s love and plan for their lives. With God’s provision and following biblical principles, World Poverty Solutions brings lasting change to the whole person and communities – mentally, physically, socially, financially, and spiritually.

WORLD CHALLENGE’S FOUNDING FAMILY

David Wilkerson was serving as pastor in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, when he saw a photograph in Life magazine of several New York City teenagers charged with murder. Moved with compassion, he was drawn to the city in February 1958. Early in his ministry, David Wilkerson worked with gang members and street kids, soon founding the transformational recovery program: Teen Challenge. The remarkable story of David’s early years is chronicled in his best-selling book, The Cross and the Switchblade.

The two-fold vision of World Challenge is to empower,

equip and encourage Christians in their daily faith; and to bring biblical solutions

to poverty within reach of every poor community around

the world.

In 1971, David Wilkerson’s ever-expanding ministry moved its headquarters to Texas where he founded World Challenge, Inc. He continued propagating the message of Christ’s love by producing films and writing books, supporting feeding programs, conducting worldwide evangelistic crusades and New York City street meetings.

In 1987, through obedience to the Lord’s leading, David Wilkerson founded Times Square Church - a thriving congregation in the heart of New York City. There he poured out his life in service to the Lord and the people of the city he loved. In addition to pastoring, David Wilkerson traveled extensively, exhorting pastors and Christian leaders throughout the world. For over six decades, David Wilkerson’s evangelistic ministry included preaching, teaching and writing. Throughout that time, a distinctive characteristic of his work was his efforts to reach the neediest among us with help for both body and soul. He authored over 30 books including, The Cross and the Switchblade, The Vision, Revival on Broadway, Hungry for More of Jesus, and It Is Finished. On April 27, 2011, David Wilkerson was killed in a car accident. His wife, Gwen survived the accident but passed away July 5, 2012, from cancer.

David’s son Gary Wilkerson became president of World Challenge in 2010 after over 30 years of serving in the ministry and being mentored by his father. He also serves as Founding Pastor of The Springs Church, which he launched in 2009. Gary has traveled nationally and internationally for conferences and missional outreach, including church planting and orphan care, as well as clinics and feeding programs serving the poorest of the poor among some of the most unreached peoples on the earth.

Throughout his ministry, Gary has seen God’s heart for the impoverished and hurting of the world. He has focused the missions work of World Challenge to minister Christ’s love to the most needy around the globe. He shares this passion with others as he ministers to leaders at Pastor’s Conferences and to the congregation at The Springs Church. His desire is that all would know the life and joy found in Jesus Christ. Gary and his wife Kelly have four children and live in Colorado Springs, CO.

THE MINISTRY

World Challenge, Inc. was founded by Reverend David Wilkerson in 1971 and served as a corporate umbrella for his worldwide crusades, ministers' conferences, book and tract publication, video production, street evangelism, literature distribution, church planting, drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers, and many charitable outreaches.

Today, World Challenge Inc. shares the message of the gospel through mission outreaches and literature distribution. Sermons from David Wilkerson, his son Gary, and other contemporary pastors are shared monthly to hundreds of thousands of people through the Pulpit Series newsletter. The numerous mission outreaches of World Challenge to the poor include orphanages, overseas widows’ fund, emergency/disaster relief, healthcare/clinics, community development, and feeding centers. Gary Wilkerson became president of World Challenge in 2010 and moves forward with the same heart and vision as his father.

In 2015, Steve Helms joined World Challenge to serve as Executive Director after 35 years of corporate success as an entrepreneur and global executive with Mars. Steve serves as the day-to-day operational leader of World Challenge and will supervise of the new Director of Partner Engagement.

The Guiding Principles of World Challenge are:

Divine Wisdom: We seek God’s direction in ministry through consistent prayer.

Innovation: We identify creative methods, unique capabilities and solutions that serve the poor and transform lives.

Teamwork: We value the contributions of all through trust, ongoing communication, and mutual accountability as we collaborate on projects aligned with common goals.

WORLD POVERTY SOLUTIONS

Since 1971, World Challenge has served 260 communities with missions in 60 nations. More recently, the re-branded ministry within the ministry, World Poverty Solutions (WPS), now serves as the international missions arm of World Challenge.

Rooted in the rich legacy of the Wilkerson’s passionate commitment to global outreach and meeting real needs among the poorest of the poor, WPS now plays an important role as a global leader in Christ-centered poverty relief by pursuing a holistic, biblically based program to end the chronic poverty that perpetuates cycles of despair. WPS seeks to bring to the poor more than aid; it offers instead a new, living, and lasting hope.

Drawing on biblical principles about God’s caring provision, WPS has changed methodology to focus less on relief efforts and more on training indigenous leaders with proven programs and teaching that helps prevent and eliminate poverty by addressing underlying root causes.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Building on the inspiring legacy of David Wilkerson, World Challenge is a well-supported global ministry with a strong brand and loyal partner base that has been prayerfully stewarded by Gary Wilkerson along with a strong leadership team headed by Executive Director Steve Helms.

As World Challenge evaluates its future ministry opportunities at home and around the world, the organization has determined to enter its next season of growth and global impact with new focus on engaging and cultivating its long-time, loyal supporters.

Trusting in the Holy Spirit, World Challenge has thrived for decades thanks to the generous support of a broad and loyal partner base that grew as a result of the personal ministry of David Wilkerson and which has never been directly solicited for gifts. With a culture perhaps more akin to that of a church than a traditional missions organization, World Challenge has not previously had an internal fundraising function or strategy.

Financially strong and eager not to fundamentally change the nature of its service and ministry orientation toward its supporters, World Challenge will look to the new Director of Partner Engagement as a relational connector who will intentionally nurture partner relationships with a goal of deepening levels of engagement through proactive communications, visits, and cultivation.

While a ministry culture characterized by service, trust, humility, and Spirit-led faith remain sacrosanct within World Challenge, the Executive Director and Board would like to reverse a declining trend among supporting partners since David Wilkerson left the ministry. As such, there is a desire to identify and evaluate those activities and goals which will serve the ministry as it moves forward by leading to increased giving while concurrently maintaining the highest levels of humility and relational engagement.
