Wednesday 27th May
The first breeding sale of rams, probably in the country under the new restrictions was met with a quality line up of rams
that were warmly received and a pleasing trade and clearance rate was achieved. Dorset’s led the way and topping the trade
at 800gns (£840) was a super shearling ram from Matthew & Adam Care of Lower Lydcott Farm, Looe who sold their others
at 400gns. Next up at 600gns (£630) was David & Mark Thomas of South Petherwin with a 4T ram whilst other shearlings
sold at 500gns for both Mark Hayman & Abi Dart of Bradninch and David Lewis of Pembrokeshire who had another at
450gns whilst other Dorset shearlings sold to 460 & 450gns for Les French of Launceston and 450gns also for David &
Richard Rossiter of Kingsbridge. Dorset ram lambs to 420 & 380gns again for David Lewis and 380gns twice for Richard
& Rob Hole of Sherborne. In other breeds, Suffolks peaked at 490 & 470gns for Mike Waycott of Ashburton and Charollais’
were topped by an aged ram from FA & CJ Elsworthy of Witheridge reaching 480gns as the best of their shearlings sold at
450gns. Other Charollais shearlings to 400gns for both Guy Goldring of Ashburton and Nigel Dennis of Ipplepen who had
others at 380gns and 350gns (x4) and a massive Charollais Ram lamb from Robert Hopper & family of Tiverton sold at
380gns. Hampshire Down shearlings to 400gns for Henry Derryman & family of Yarcombe whilst a pair of Charollais x
Beltex shearling rams from Margaret Heard of Maundown achieved 380gns apiece.
A smaller entry of just 90 families for what will be our last Wednesday sale of couples sold in front of a smaller crowd of
buyers for varying reasons, but last week’s ballistic trade and the ongoing dry weather certainly didn’t help. Topping the
trade were Anthony & James Brock of Crediton with one crop (4T) Suffolk x Cheviot Mule ewes with twins at £205 whilst
their singles also claimed joint top price when they sold at £145. Other doubles to £195 & £175 for Roussin’s from David
Pratt and family of Huntsham whilst Bridford’d Ray Tucker sold his best double at £178. A tidy pen of 10 FM ewes with
15 lambs from Tom Havill of Widecombe sold at £150 (£60/life) whilst Ray Tucker also had a smart single at £145, the
Parris family of Yarcombe sold hogg singles to £140 and Tom Havill’s smart singles rose to £132. Plenty of other
indifferently bred hogg and staright ewe single couples selling from £120 to £130 and nothing really less than that.
