Experience Corps Overview
• An evidence-based, volunteer-led, literacy program that
helps children become strong readers by the end of third
grade
• Provides both older adults and children with
opportunities to enrich their lives through literacy tutoring
• Experience Corps works side-by-side with schools and
community-based 50 and older volunteers to provide
children with opportunities to improve their lives
• During the 2013-2014 school year, over 2,000 AARP
Foundation Experience Corps volunteers tutored 31,000
students in 22 cities across the country

Who is Eligible to Apply?

AARP Foundation will invest in community-based non-profit
host organizations with the mission alignment, school
system relationships, capacity and sustainability to adopt
and implement the Experience Corps Program.
• 501(c)(3) organizations in one of 19 target states (see next
slide).
• Documented commitments from school systems or districts.
• Intention to implement small group sustained tutoring alone or
supplemented with literacy assistance.
• Access to student data and ability to participate in external
evaluation.

• Compelling statement of need for the
community
• Experience providing low-income students
with academic assistance and/or student
and family services that reduce barriers to
grade-level reading
• Defined relationship with schools or school
districts
• Detailed explanation on how to serve your
target number of students
• Existing volunteer base with demonstrated
experience in long-term activities
• Experience recruiting 50+ volunteers

student testing results
• Commitment of staff time to evaluation
activities and working with an independent
evaluation firm
• Ability to utilize Foundation data capturing
tools and exercise quality control over

3. Organizational Capacity

• Plan for program management including
dedicated internal staff with sufficient
managerial and decision-making authority
• A volunteer recruitment and management
specialist dedicated towards the Scaling
Reading Success program
• Evidence of structural institutional connections
to schools or school districts with a primary
focus on in-school activities
• Demonstrated experience managing and/or
participating in federal grant programs,
including reporting and controls to maintain
compliance
• Evidence of institutional and leadership
commitment to the project

• Indirect rate: You must use your federally approved
indirect rate, but it is capped at 10% of federal
share of grant; any remaining amount should be
used as part of subgrantee share

Requirement

• Any unrestricted funds, as long as they didn’t come from
any federal sources
