A cable from the accelerator opens a butterfly valve, allowing cold air to enter the throttle body.

EGR System

CUTAWAY VIEW OFTHROTTLE INTERIOR

As cool air fills the throttle body, a small amount of exhaust returns to the throttle through the EGR valve.

Cool Air Mixed with Exhaust

When the butterfly valve closes, the exhaust from the EGR is drawn back towards the throttle body, and mixes with air.

Carbon Deposits on Chamber Walls

CUTAWAY VIEW OFTHROTTLE INTERIOR

The vapor mixture deposits carbon along the interior walls of the throttle body and tubes.

Carbon Deposit Sticks Throttle

Greater amounts of carbon build up over time, until the butterfly valve becomes stuck in position, held by the carbon deposits.

Vehicle Hesitates or Slows

CUTAWAY VIEW OFTHROTTLE INTERIOR

The vehicle loses power, unable to get outside air into the throttle body.

Increased Pressure to Accelerator

CUTAWAY VIEW OFTHROTTLE INTERIOR

The accelerator pedal has little or no effect. The driver increases pressure on the pedal andfinally, the valve breaks free.

Angle of EGR valve encourages exhaust to reverse direction, instead of it’s intended route to the engine.
