Artist StatementWithin the domain of mythologised landscape that I have entered there has emerged a more personalised strain. This occurs, for example, where I have been able to elucidate more fully the underlying elements that evolve within my depictions of local scenes. Similarly, there can also be a sense of past experience coming into my portrayals of interiorised drama.

…About Dance

This work is part of the series I made in the 1980s, which addressed issues relating to the rituals of courtship and marriage. It was a reaction to the particular the way that the royal wedding was used to celebrate a regressive female identity: fake demur and passivity. As a feminist I continue to challenge these rituals, both personally and as they were played out in the art world.

…About The Russian Translator This work was made around 1989 after participating in the RAG-USSR exchanges, and encountering Russian artists and administrators and particularly our translator Svetlana, it depicts the contradictions inherent in her obsession with the image of Princess Diana and also her aspirations, as an educated Russian, to leave and settle in America, which she eventually achieved.

Artist StatementThe works have an architectural quality allied to a strong involvement with colour. What I’m after is a kind of knife-edged balance between control and eloquence that is caught for all time. This is very much about precision, and clarity of expression. Colour, compression and metaphor, light, time, emotion, all come in to play. Beyond the concerns of materiality and construction, these resolutely abstract works carry an imbuement of emotions; they are pervaded by death, longing and the dreams of hope.

C. Morey de Morand was born in Paris of French and White Russian parents. Originally trained as a scientist (lecturing in Pharmacognosy), she studied art in Canada, New Zealand and the UK. C. Morey de Morand has been working as a painter in London since the late 1970s, exhibiting and travelling widely. Critic Clement Greenberg and modernist architect Oscar Nitzchke were important early mentors.

During Morey de Morand’s career, this artist has been the recipient of Grants, Prizes and Residencies in the United States, Ireland, Canada, France, Spain, Germany, Turkey, Russia, Bulgaria and Belgium. Of particular note is the residency in Ahmedabad, India along with John Baldessari, the Triangle residency with Clement Greenberg, in New York State, and the Arts Council of England Award.

The Royal Academy of Arts, London, has selected C. Morey de Morand’s paintings for the Summer Exhibition �01�.

Artist StatementIn my paintings I primarily respond to the natural world, finding especial interest in how so many patterns and shapes occur, and re-occur, throughout Nature.

Observing landscapes, plants, skies, water etc and reflecting on how their very forms echo one another, as they seemingly imitating the forms of the cell life that sparks life, and initiates us all, certainly offers a fascinating and profound seam of exploration.

In Valeria 1 and Valeria 2 alternative interpretations of a common seaside plant, and its immediate surroundings, are investigated, with visual references to both plant and cell forms.

Heather GordonOrbiting 1 and Orbiting II are part a series of works made using pastels, triggered by a visit to the recent Degas show at the Royal Academy, London. The subject is from a photo of my daughter twirling before exiting into the night. Orbiting in her space: an embodiment of a fusion of magic, movement and colour.

Artist StatementLooking and making sense of looking in a given place. I live at the edge of an oak wood, in the hills of Provence. It is nothing like Cézanne or Bonnard country but, living roughly between them, I feel and respect that history. Courbet, for all his distance to the north of here, is another important imagined presence. Across the vallon is one of many works drawn or painted through the studio window over the winter months. For In the wood, I have crossed the barrier of the vallon, to sit within the summer grass.

Pauline has worked as a visual artist since graduating in 19�7, exhibiting in group shows and individually. She has also taught in schools and worked on public and community art projects. She studied at Canterbury and Wimbledon art colleges and trained as a teacher at Goldsmiths College, University of London.

Jane Oldfield lives and works in London and has been chair of the Riverside Artists Group since �010.

These two works from Jane Oldfield’s Colour and Car series form a part of her exploration of how cars are related to our planet in visual terms. The works depict her experiments with her colour palette.

Artist StatementI was born in central Spain and brought up in the industrial north. For the last �0 years I have been based in London.

Although I studied journalism whilst at university I associated myself with a group of art students, starting with ceramics before settling upon acrylic painting. I did ceramic studies in an adult education centre in central London.

The places and cultures I have seen in my extensive worldwide travel, coupled with my own personality, have done much to inspire my own distinctive style with elongated colourful figures mixed with harsh black lines.

The second paintings, Somewhere in the Universe II, is part of an ongoing contemplation and self-discovery, this work emerged from consideration of alternative landscapes; the result of underlying and usually unarticulated concerns about the environment and the erosion of ecological order, colour schemes, hues and shades.

Artist StatementIn 1989, I realised there was a sort of joy to colour. I was struggling for a long time how to put together a colour harmony and create happiness, then line appeared.

Sanja Stamenic holds a Masters degree in Fine Arts from the University of Belgrade and also holds a BSEE in Power Engineering Division from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Belgrade.

Artist StatementI draw much of my inspiration from eroticism, mythology, folklore and the surreal world of dreams. Although recurrent themes of my works are portraits, I am not interested in their realistic representations. Instead, I am more drawn to people’s hidden feelings and symbolism of their existence; historical, geographical, political, social… And of course, to their life stories, regardless of whether those stories are true or heavily build up by my imagination... I take time to create my work, to tell its many tales trough so many layers. In this process I lead long dialogues with my subconscious mind and I am largely driven by associations to constantly make changes to my prints.

… on Ice QueenMy print Ice Queen is made as a playful collage of transparent overlapping layers, fussed together in the process reminiscent of the way the myths were built up over centuries: from a patchwork of small personal stories, sewed together to blend into original story and blur its meaning. It is the myth of a big flood that echoes in this print. This work is my personal comment on the fast disappearing Arctic world and its unique habitats threatened by a global meltdown.

Yinjie Sun was born in China. He received his Bachelor’s degree from the China Academy of Art and Central Saint Martin’s College of Art. Yinjie exhibits extensively both throughout the UK and internationally. His most recent Solo shows include The Museum of East Asian Art, Bath (�01�), Museo Ramon Maria Aller Museum, Lalin, Spain (�01�).

Besides, his work has been selected by the Victoria and Albert Museum for the Chinese New Year Celebration and exhibited in Raphael Gallery (�011). His work has also been exhibited in the Today Art Museum in Beijing (�011), The Sunshine Art Museum in China (�010), Ourense Museum in Spain (�011), Shengyang Industrial Museum in China (�010), Sunshine International Art Museum, Beijing (�010), and his work has appeared in numerous publications such as the BBC China, Eastern Art Report, The State Council News Office of China, People’s Daily, China News, Art China, and is represented in public and private collections in Britain and worldwide.

Artist StatementThe concept of my work, which derives from my personal experience, is the city. In my own practice, I explore light and shadow, employing structures or compositions in interior and exterior spaces. I am particularly fascinated by both natural and unnatural light. From my personal point of view, light is a symbol of hope and shadow is replete with mystery.

More specifically, light and shadow are of importance to my own thought processes. I believe they can explain mental states, and in my own works, these qualities are reflections of how I envisage the future. Bright light helps me to depict the desire for a bright future, whereas the darkness of the shadow expresses anxiety about an uneasy and disorienting future. Creating such work is one of the methods I use to document life. Through the interplay of light and shadow, brightness and darkness, an impression of the endless is mediated, imbuing the work with a sense of the mysterious. The nebulous quality of my works also reflects my curiosity about the future and its unpredictability as well as recording the subtle shades of everyday experience in the world. Those features that appear commonplace are used as metaphor for the places we occupy when navigating the problems thrown up by the everyday world. Each piece of work threads together aspects of everyday life as reflected in many environments in London.

Artist StatementExperiments, now named research, becomes blurred after the event.I can remember the feeling of discovery, the mood I was in, the path I was on, but I am less sure about the memory I have of the process, of the doing. It is almost as if it was something to be completed and then to be discarded as it had served its purpose.

Artist StatementMy work examines traditional academic style of drawing and painting methods to depict simple figures in everyday life.

Since coming to the UK in �004, Xuhua Zhan has worked for the Institute of Conservation (ICON), the International Institute of Conservation (IIC), and the Tate Gallery. She has carried out research for international Culture communication projects including the International Dunhuang Project (IDP), �007-�010 European Commission major EU-Asia cultural exchange project CHINDEU and the �01� China-London Olympic fine art exhibition project supported by the Culture Minister of China. In addition, she has organised Chinese Heritage Conference and Chinese Visual Festival in London since �010. She is the co-founder and artistic director of China Culture Connect, an organisation that focuses on art and culture communication projects between China and Europe. Xuhua Zhan joined the Riverside Artists Group in �00�.
