The untimely death of little Solakha Futha by electrocution because of izinyoka (illegal electricity connectors) has exacerbated the problem that this community of shack-dwell- ers is facing. “The sad part of this already worst case sce- nario, is that the grandmother of the child who died, does not even use stolen electricity. She makes fire with wood to cook and uses candles to light her shack,” Ward 57 Councillor Them- bile Nkosiyaphantsi said. Solakha’s mother, Nontobeko Futha, said, “My mother, Liziwe Futha, was hanging wash- ing in the backyard when she noticed that the electric wires that crisscrossed our shack were loose and broken. While she was busy she felt she was being shocked. “She (Liziwe) hated the illegal connections and left the backyard to use the line in front of the house. As she was talking about it, Sola- kha ran out in front of her to the line in front and fell on the ground. She was electrocuted,” a sobbing Nontobeko said, adding that the mul- tiple electric wires were also exposed. Solakha’s gogo started shouting frantically at the neighbours who were doing illegal con- nections, saying that they must come and see what they had done. According to Nontobeko some of her neigh- bours admitted that they knew her mother did not use electricity through illegal means, and had promised to take responsibility for help- ing the family bury the child. Councillor Thembile Nkosiyaphantsi said, “Two ladies did come with the gogo and asked that we assist in the burial of the child. I said no! We can’t do that. If they admit that they were guilty, they must go further and find ways to assist the needy family.” Nkosiyaphantsi added that he also advised that they collect money and ask for donations. Through Nkosiyaphantsi’s assistance, the child was kept at the government mortuary while the family sought the means for burial. Nontobeko said she was not sure whether the family would follow the councillor’s advice to seek donations from community members. “Some were very drunk when they came for prayers last Friday. One even said we should not worry as though we had lost a breadwin- ner - it was just a child,” said Nontobeko, who was carrying her 7-month-old baby on her back. She told Express Indaba she had two old- er children who live with relatives in Port Al- fred, while she and her two younger children stayed with her mother and two siblings. According to the councillor, this was the sec- ond death of a child as a result of electric shock in this community of about 900 people who need electricity. Two more little children were seriously injured when they were electrocuted recently. “These people pull electricity from the mu- nicipal pole which, owing to the heavy cur- rent, cannot handle it anymore. Some use elec- tricity illegally from formal houses and they pay for it. This is a big problem facing this community. We tell them to stop it but they continue to do it nonetheless,” said Nkosiya- phantsi. CLAIMS that Mandisa Masiki is not guiltyof public violence - the charge she is current-ly in jail for - will be proved by the court oflaw, said police spokespersonCaptainAndréBeetge.

This was in reaction to people from WellsEstate who stood outside court claiming tosupport Masiki, popularly known as Nora-bhase.While the court was in progress, a handful

of supporters gathered outside court singingfreedom songs in support of Norabhase. They did not allow photographs to be tak-

en, alleging that they were being victimisedfor challenging “poor service delivery” bythe ANC Ward 60 Councillor Nondikho Ga-na.“We can give Express Indaba our story.

But we do not want our picture to be taken,

because we are the targets of police who arenot even from Port Elizabeth. They don’tknow who was involved in the public vio-lence, now they arrest anybody. But, weknow for sure that Norabhase was notthere,” said one resident.

“Wewant her out or there’ll be hell to pay. What they claim to be public violence is stillnothing,” said another resident.Capt Beetge said, “Of course, anyone is in-

nocent until proven guilty by a court of law,”adding that a police investigation into thepublic violence that included the blockadingof Jijana Street with huge stones and burnttyres was directed at the suspect.“According to police investigation the sus-

Residents of the metro may start noticingsignificant improvements to the waste man-agement services of late, as a result of theMetro’s IntegratedWasteManagement Plan(IWMP) project being undertaken by GIBB,South Africa’s leading black-owned engi-neering firm.

According to Walter Fyvie, Environmen-tal Scientist at GIBB, and Project Manager, completion is scheduled for late 2015. “TheNMBM has prioritised waste management, and the four-year implementation processwas initiated by the City in 2011,” Fyviesaid.Plans are currently being formulated for

the Nkonkobe Local Eastern Cape Munici-pality, and the local municipalities of Man-deni and Nquthu in KZN.

The key objectives of the NMBM Integrat-ed Waste Management Plan are to:

THEYmaybefromdifferentgener-ations, but lastweek the boys fromthe Grey Junior School showedthat they understood senior citi-zens and their definition of goodmusic.

Led by their band director, JeffTaylor, the school’s musicianshosted senior citizens from differ-ent old age homes and churches inPort Elizabeth. The school’s seniorcitizen day is an annual event thatfirst took place in 2011, as part ofthe school’s outreach programme. For an hour and a half, the boys

entertain attendees with their in-strumental renditions of classic‘golden oldies’. On the day, themu-sical numbers provided an air ofnostalgia that hadmanyof the sen-ior citizens on their feet.According to IreneBurke, one of

the ladies who attended theschool’s senior citizen day, if shecould have stayed for more musi-

cal numbers, she would.“They are so talented and they

played fantastically. It was such amemorable day”, said Burke, whowas dressed to the nines. “Wordscannot describe how much I en-joyed myself,” she concluded.Whatmade the difference to this

concert, was the unique way inwhich each musical item was an-nounced. Before the band started anew song, Taylorwould launch in-to a story about what each itemmeant to the older folk. The rendition of the 1961 sound-

track of Breakfast at Tiffany’s,“Moon River”, made the crowd es-pecially teary, as it allowed for thereminiscing of years passed. The crowd could not get enough

of the four young boys who lenttheir voices to the itemandwas ex-tremely impressedwith the effortsmade by Taylor. Also in attendance was Leon

Brainers, who commented on howyoung the music made him feel.“Forget the fact that it was chil-

dren playing this beauti-fulmusic, themusic itselfjust takes you back.Thesechildrenwillneverknow what they havedone for us,” said Brain-ers, full of smiles.

IT took 27 hours, a broken arm, a back injuryandmany blisters tomake the Bay the recordholder for the longest rugby match ever play-ed.

On Friday, 46 players from Siyakhula,Sports Revolution, Swallows andMotherwellplayed more than 20 regular matches conse-cutively at the Dan Qeqe Stadium in Zwideto beat the existing record for the longestmatch of 25 hours, 59 minutes and 47 seconds. This record, according to the Guinness

World Records, was set last year in Augustbetween the Boars and Barbarians at Broms-grove Rugby Club in Worcestershire, En-gland.On Saturday afternoon, at about 2:17pm,

the two teams Eezy Fana and Camagu, stum-bled off the field after 27 hours, 2 minutes and52 seconds of playing time.“Their feet were full of blisters. Their jer-

seys full of sweat, dust and blood, but nothingprevented them from going through with the

challenge,” said Noxolo Nqwazi, executivedirector of Sport, Recreation, Arts andCultu-re in the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality. But the record attempt, played in honour

of former president Nelson Mandela’s 27 ye-ars in captivity, almost ended in disaster.Panki Tyobelo, a Camagu player broke hisarm at 2am on Saturday, players saw it as avalid excuse to throw in the towel.“But I refused. We had already come so far.

So I walked back on to the field with my bro-ken arm and said I would play until time wasup.“My teamquickly followedme and thenwe

played,” said Tyobelo.Camagu prevailed with 725 points to Eezy

Fana’s 688. Each team receivedR15 000 in pri-ze money.“The players did not do it for the money.

They did it out of love for the game, also toprove that sometimes champions are made, not born,” said Mazizi Msutu, president ofthe organizer, City of Champions. The record is expected to be included in

next year’s Guinness World Records.

of a long and demanding competitivecalendar that his students had to navi-gate.“The Madibaz have played the most

dominant and successful teams in PEFAleagues this year. But while local rivalryis important, it is by no means the be-alland end-all for student sport,” said Tom-my.He said Madibaz were the only club in
