PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma haspromised the Eastern Cape jobsthat will turn this poor provincearound.

Speaking at the official launch ofthe multi-billion rand Port ofNgqura on the outskirts of PortElizabeth on Friday the presidentsaid the launch of the Port ofNgqura underlines government’scommitment to economic develop-ment and transformation. It is apositive step to fight against pover-ty, inequality and unemployment, said President Zuma.

Following shortly on the officialopening of the Dube Tradeport inDurban where King Shaka Inter-national airport is housed, Zumasaid, “This port is a key strategicinfrastructural project for ourcountry, the continent and theworld given its location and poten-tial.”

Zumasaid these twokeyprojectswere launched against the back-

drop of his 2012 State of the NationAddress in which he outlined theimplementation plan for infra-structural development.

According to Msholozi, govern-ment has to date invested throughTransnet, eight billion rand in thebasic port infrastructure, creatingover 15 000 jobs during construc-tion. Government was pleased thatthe planning of the Ngqura Porthas been integrated with the CoegaIndustrial Development Zone(IDZ), the president told the gather-ing.

Currently the Coega IDZ trains8 000 unemployed people per yearand is a facilitator of scarce skillsdevelopment programmes.

“In the State of the Nation ad-dress, I announced the market de-mand strategy of Transnet, whichentails an investment, over thenext seven years, of three hundredbillion rand in capital projects. Isaid that of this amount R200 bil-lion would be allocated to railprojects and themajority of thebal-ance, to projects in the ports,” hesaid.

YOUNG people who are turned awayfrom filled-to-capacity universities, aswell as those who are still undecidedabout a career, can still enrol for furtherstudy this year.

All they need do, is consider alterna-tive study routes, says Natalie Rabsonof Boston City Campus and BusinessCollege.

“It is disturbing to see the news beingdominated by reports of students queu-ing in vain for university admission,”comments Rabson. “It shows that thou-sands of young people are not aware ofhow tertiary education works, especial-ly where the application and registra-tion procedures are concerned. On thebright side, however, it shows that theSouth African youth is firmly commit-ted to education – which is great news.”

Insteadof givinguphope,Rabson rec-ommends that prospective studentstake some time to research their studyoptions carefully.

“From student comments quoted inthe media, it seems that many youngpeople are under the impression thatthere’s only one way to get a good quali-ficationand that is throughuniversity,”she adds. “They also seem to think thatthe only way to get a degree is throughfull-time study at a university.”

In reality, prospective students arespoilt for choice when it comes to theavailabilityofcoursesofstudyandalter-native routes to get a qualification thatwill ultimately take them to the careeror job of their dreams. Rabson debunkssome of the myths pertaining to post-school education:

) “You are entitled to register at anytertiary institution and for any courseof your choice despite your academicperformance” – in truth you are entitledto what you have successfully workedtowards, what you have previously ap-plied for and been accepted for, and allsubject to availability. You need to workhard to meet the entry requirements ofa course just as you need to pass Grade7 before you can proceed to Grade 8.That is just how it works.

) “It’s difficult and expensive to getcareerguidance” - this isonly true if youconsult a career counsellor in privatepractice. Most universities and collegesassist prospective students in choosinga field of study best suited to them. Bos-ton City Campus and Business Collegeoffers a computerized career assess-ment and one-on-one career guidance toprospectivestudents.Studentsare invit-ed to do career research on the compu-ter-based Career Compass programmeat any of the college’s branches nation-wide and then book an individual ses-sion with a trained career counsellor –all free of charge and with no obligationto register.

) “Closing dates can be ignored orchanged” -not trueas closingdateshaveto be adhered to so that education insti-tutions can allocate classroom space, prepare study materials and so forth, much in the same way that you need toknow how many friends will attendyour birthday party so that you can ca-ter adequately for them. But there arecertain courses where there are no clos-ing dates and you can register at any

time. A career guidance professionalcan help you identify such courses; youcan also consult the Boston City Cam-pus and Business College brochure orwebsite to see which courses are ‘regis-tration any time’.

) “A degree is the best qualificationto have” – this is a false perception. Ifyou’re intending to become a medicaldoctor you need a degree, sure enough. But if you are passionate about counsel-ling, and want to help people with HIV/Aids, you can for example enrol for theBoston HIV/Aids Counselling and Man-agement course on NQF level 5. Thereare other similar examples, too many tomention; it’s best to consult a careercounsellor.

) “You can’t enrol for further studyif you got ‘bad’ results in Matric” - thisis definitely not true. You may not meetthe requirements for some courses butthere are many courses that are openeven to those who did not get the resultsthey wanted (perhaps only have Grade11).

You can study towards nationally –and even internationally – recogniseddiplomas and certificates that will ena-ble you to secure good employment andbuild a career.

Boston City Campus & Business Col-lege offers over 80 dynamic career quali-fications throughout 48 branches na-tionwide.

THE Chevrolet UTE Forcerecently descended on Cow-an High School in NewBrighton, Port Elizabeth, and with the help of a fleetof the legendary all newChevrolet Utility bakkies, abrand-new cricket field wasbuilt for the school withinfive and a half days.

The UTE-Force is a new ini-tiative of Chevrolet and con-sists of the country’s most var-ied and skilled experts, fromcarpenters and plumbers toelectricians and industrial de-signers. These talented anddedicated individuals are allready to give back to the com-munity by taking on variousprojects around South Africa.

Tim Hendon, Brand Manag-er for Chevrolet, said the aimof the UTE Force is to promotethe Chevrolet Utility’s capa-bilities, while at the sametime giving back to the peopleof South Africa.

“In coming up with the ideawe wanted to show the capa-bility of the vehicle, but we al-so looked to do it in a way thatwould benefit a community,”he said.

Hendon said Cowan HighSchool had been identifiedthrough Eastern Cape Crick-

et, owing to their strong per-formance as a cricketingschool, despite their lack of re-sources.

“We are leaving a sportsfield here. It will be fully func-tional. We are also training lo-cals to take care of the facili-ty,” said Hendon.

Trevor Dolley, Cowan HighSchool’s principal said theschool was established in 1946and currently has 1 300 learn-ers. According to him manylearners are from disadvan-taged homes where parentsare often unemployed andwhere children are raised onincome from old age pensionsand child care grants.

Despite the disadvantages,Dolley said New Brighton isknown for producing some ofSouth Africa’s political, eco-nomic and sporting greats.“We were actually brought onboard owing to our perform-ance in terms of the cricketingabilities of our boys and ourgirls,” he said.

The school’s cricketing suc-cesses can be traced to Cow-an’s dedicated cricketingcoach, Moses Maleki, who hasbeen at the school since 2007.When Maleki started coach-ing cricket at Cowan, therewas no proper field, no facili-ties and a single bag of donat-ed kit.

Fuelled by the love of the

game, Maleki persevered, growing two strong boys’teams and a girls’ team. Someof his boys have already beencalled up for EP trials.

Dave Emslie, CEO of East-ern Cape Cricket, who hadidentified Cowan High Schoolas the beneficiary on behalf ofChevrolet, agreed.

“Last year in the CSA pro 20competition Cowan played inthe regional final againstGrey High School, and I wasstruck by the stark differencebetween facilities at the twoschools” he said.

Lonwabo “Lopsy” Tsot-sobe, well-known South Afri-can and Chevrolet Warriorscricket player, who grew up inNew Brighton, said the areahad a good sporting culture.

“I remember playing in thestreets using bread crates aswickets. I think what Moses isdoing here for children ismore than just coaching crick-et,” he said.

Maleki agreed, comparinghis cricket field to a class-room. “Some people see Crick-et as just a game. A field is alot like a classroom. It showsthe kids how to catch and howto swing and how to get backup when you get knockeddown. Those lessons one canapply anywhere,” Malekisaid.

PASSING matric without computer literacy is ahuge problem that many of the township youthwill face if something is not done urgently.

This according to the principal of SakhisizweHigh School, Mzimkhulu Qunta.

Speaking to PE Express Indaba last week,Qunta who carries Nelson Mandela Bay’s Citi-zen of the Year Title because of his love for educa-tion and philanthropic work, said somethingshould be done soon to ensure that no child getsout of the schooling system without the valuableknowledge of computer literacy.

Realising this need a few years ago, Quntastarted Computer Literacy classes in his school- although the school initially did not have com-puters; nor funds to buy them.

“We went to the education department andasked that instead of auctioning their unusedcomputers, they should let us have them andmake use of them,” said Qunta.

They further requested firms and private com-panies in the metro to give them their old andunused computers, which has resulted in a class-room being turned into a computer workshop inhis school.

They have now employed computer guru JeffMunyaka to repair the old computers and teachthe discipline to Sakhisizwe High School learn-ers and those from around nearby primaryschools - from Grades 3-12.

“We want to urge PE Express Indaba readersto help us with their old and unused computersto assist our children never to be left behind inthis highly computerised world,” pleaded Qunta.

because of lack of finance.Gongqa said 99 per cent of

his players come from verypoor backgrounds. “Al-though the young players arededicated to the sport for thelove of the game, I think somemay see sport as a ticket outof poverty and misery.

“We have U-11, U-13 and U-15 players that have to sharethe same jersey and bootsduring matches. This be-comes difficult and causes in-convenience when matchesare held at the same time.

“But thanks to DekonProjects, all that will be histo-ry. We’ve got enough moneyto buy jerseys and boots for

all our teams. We’ll registerour players with the LocalFootball League, buy soccerballs and be able to pay refe-rees,” an elated Gongqa said.

“We are currently buildinga Youth Centre in Walmer/Gqebera and when Rabi con-tacted us for the sponsorhip,we felt it would be for a goodcause,” said Dekon ProjectsBranch manager Brett Wie-hahn.

Financial Manager PeterMills said “We are pleased toassist the local youth in thedevelopment of football. These are the future stars ofSouth African Football. Weare pleased to have helped.”
